  1. Thanks Eric! I spent a ton of time in the Getting Started section and it's been tremendously helpful. Just reading the "types of armor and where to find them" and the "FISD acronyms and TK Glossary" alone proved to be invaluable. There's soooo much information in these forums, the name of the game is research, research, research for sure! Hoping to reach out to vendors this week and pull the trigger soon!

"Buckets Off" Greetings troopers Last month we finally closed out on the huge Det shirt run from 2019 (over 700 shirts). With so many shirt orders and a few manufacturing errors, Chinese new year and then the Pandemic to drag things out we can finally put this chapter to bed. Due to the overall quantity of shirts ordered it moved the price point back a few dollars as the run met the next price break. This left a residual which members were offered two options. 1. A refund for the few dollars and 2. donate your dollars to a charity. The charity chosen was MAW (Make a wish) We decided that after the global 501st charity event we would follow suit in supporting this great charity for children. After refunds and a few Paypal fees the donation grand total $2,308.33 I would personally like to thank all those that chose the donate option for your generosity and making a difference. Thanks also for your patience as Mark worked through this to get the shirts ordered, sorted, shipped and then dealing with the refunds and donations side of it. Our 5" shield patch sales thread closed at the end of July and the order has been placed with the manufacturer. A total of almost 1700 patches were ordered so once these are shipped to the US Redforce, TK 10666 (Anthony) will start the arduousness task of sorting packing and shipping these around the world so stay tuned for updates through the DL's Blog or from Anthony. March to 1000 update and announcement. We are steadily approaching the big number, and actually even closer than any of us had realized. In a process of due diligence gmrhodes13 (Glen) spent many hours starting from EI approval 1, yep ground zero checking all the approved numbers. Well to his surprise he actually found two members that had been approved and not issued an approval number. The DO's, Glen and myself have been in discussion and done extra checks to verify Glens findings and he is absolutely correct. The two members who had been simply labeled as Approved, will now be given the next 2 numbers of approval taking us that little bit closer to 1000. Mark "humperdingle" TK22700 originally approved September 13th 2016. Approved (985) Daphne "Athenall" TK62317 originally approved October 7th 2016. Approved (986) I'm getting pretty hyped about the March to 1000 campaign as we draw closer and closer to that magic number, so be sure to read Glens article on Expert Infantry and it's history latter on in this addition. Also very much looking forward to revealing the special merch item's for this historical event so please if you are considering the upgrade, get on it now. Until next month, please take care out there, and if you haven't heard from a fellow trooper or friend for a while, perhaps reach out to them and make sure they are doing ok. INFORMATION & AWARD PROGRAMS Are you new to the FISD and wondering what the heck all those abbreviations and strange sounding terms mean? To help you @justjoseph63 has started a list of the most commonly used ones that will give you some insight. If you have ANY questions about a particular term that is not listed or suggestions for new ones please contact Joseph. You can find the list here Pre Approval Forum allows future Troopers the opportunity to submit photos of their completed build to be reviewed by the Staff, Imperial Attaches and others in preparation for forwarding it to their GML for approval. Any and all advice/suggestions given will be specific, constructive, helpful and respectful. Please note that this program will NOT take the place of your local GML, as Detachments are not chartered for costume approval and can not override a GMLs decision, but is instead a peer review program designed to help you look your best and offer guidance and positive feedback. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about your completed armor, weapons (if applicable), accessories, etc. and get accurate information from the experts here at the FISD.. the definitive home of TKs worldwide. Your picture may end up in the Stormtrooper Hall of Fame Award Recipients July - August No awards issued this period The FISD Master Armorer program is an optional, detachment only incentive award to recognize individuals who have directly helped another 501st stormtrooper to achieve Expert Infantry status. Some people spend countless hours helping others, and want to reward their results as well as incentivizing new people to help as well. To register a “win” in the program, the assistance must have provided hands-on help trimming, building, and/or fitting of said armor for the person who was awarded Expert Infantry status. Other program notes: • Helping remotely, giving advice, or taking payment in exchange for help does not account, all work must be voluntary and without expectation of compensation. • The assistance must be for a period of 30 minutes or more. Spending 15 minutes tweaking someone’s fitting or taking photos does not count. • "wins" can be retroactive, e.g. if you helped 5 people in 2017 already, those can count as long as they are fully documented. Award Levels • 5+ “wins”: FISD Armorer Badge • 15+ “wins” FISD Senior Armorer Badge • 25+ “wins” FISD Master Armorer Badge The process • Person applying for the award will create an application thread to track the help they give. • For each “win”, they will list the person they helped achieve Expert Infantry status by copying their EI approval thread. • For each “win”, the person who was helped will validate that this person helped them. You can find the master award area here https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/182-fisd-master-armorer-program Are you an approved TK that spends more time on the boards than the average Trooper? Do you enjoy using your knowledge to help out future and existing Troopers? If so, we would like to invite you to join the Imperial Attaché program! Members of the I.A. team are chosen to help out not only those here on the boards, but on a local level as well. Our aim is to have at least one in each and every Garrison, Squad and Outpost in the entire legion to be the eyes and ears of the FISD on a local level. A suggested level of EIB or above is preferred, as part of the duties include assisting those aiming for levels 2 and 3, but is not a requirement. Being active on the boards on a regular basis , welcoming new members and helping out where you can is, though. Some of the benefits: 1. Access to exclusive Attaché merch., including patches, etc. 2. Having the Imperial Attaché title under your name. 3. Being a part of the team that welcomes new and prospective members of the FISD. 4. Being the "go-to" person in your Garrison, Squad or Outpost. 5. Exclusive access to the Attaché HQ area, Imperial Propaganda Machine (newsletter) and merchandise discussions. You can find the thread here (Imperial Attaché's ONLY) So what exactly are EIB (Expert Infantry Badge) and Centurion levels? These programs were designed for those who choose to take their armor above and beyond the minimum requirements for basic 501st Legion approval. It gives you the chance to show a level of dedication and pride that takes your armor closer to being as "screen accurate" as possible, without as much extra work as you may realize! It also works on giving a better look to the Legion as an entity, and you can bet others will take notice of your hard work. The 501st has a list of detailed requirements for Basic approval, (level 1), EIB, (level 2) and Centurion, (level 3) which can be found here in the Costume Reference Library, (CRL) http://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:FISD_CRL Here are a few of the questions people may be wondering about: 1. "I am a (tall/short/heavy/thin) Trooper. Can I still apply? Of course! These programs are open and encouraged for all sizes of TKs, as long as the costume is correct and meets the guidelines. There are many specific build tutorials to every option, as well as a vast network of fellow TKs on the FISD to help you out and offer suggestions. 2. "How much extra will I have to pay for extra items"? The cost is actually quite reasonable, considering the few extra supplies you will need, which are listed in the requirements area. While it may run you a little more to implement these additions to your costume, they will go a long way to improving accuracy. All needed items can be found for sale on this thread: https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/16-ongoing-sales-project-orders/ While blasters are not required for basic approval, for EIB and Centurion levels they are, and may need upgrades (also listed in the CRL). 3. "I haven't even got my kit yet, is it too early to start planning"? Actually, aiming for Centurion is easiest to do right out of the box. 4. "I have my basic TK approval, can I still get in these programs"? In a word... absolutely! 5. "Are there any "perks" to this extra work and cost"? Besides knowing that you have a great looking set of armor, the 501st and FISD believes you should be deservedly recognized for your achievement(s), and allows you to wear the appropriate embroidered "rocker" badge of rank (available for a very minimum cost) on your shirt, helmet bag, etc., as well as rank decals to put on your armor bin. You will also have access to select "challenge coin" runs, receive (free) a cool certificate for your new rank, and have your title posted below your name in your FISD signature. Plus, once you reach these levels, you will have the extra knowledge to help out those who are looking to apply as well. 6. "Is it hard to apply, and what happens then"? After basic approval, all you do is make sure your armor is up to the standards set forth in the CRL, post a thread with the required photos in the appropriate area (see below), and wait a bit for the D.O.s (Deployment Officers) to address it. (Hint: Studying other people's threads before you submit can be a GREAT help). These are also listed on the main page of the FISD site. While waiting for approval, you will get some comments from others who will offer suggestions and constructive advice to help you out. If you should need any changes, the DOs will let you know, so you can adjust accordingly. Don't be dismayed if you do need changes... it's all for your benefit! After you are approved for EIB, then you can submit for Centurion. EIB https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/19-request-expert-infantryman-status/ Centurion https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/72-request-centurion-status/ Photo Checklists To make it easier (and faster) to get you approved, we have updated the Photo Requirement checklists for both OT and FO and included visual examples of what we as D.O.s are looking for in order to move you along at an expedited rate. As you may be aware, we are aiming to have #1000 approved by the end of the year. I am happy with the way my armor looks, so why bother?- It not only makes you look more screen accurate, it instills a sense of pride and "esprit de corps"! 4. What if I don't make it? No worries, we will provide detailed suggestions on how to reach your goal! Benefits: 1 Bragging rights for being one of the "Original 1000" 2. You get a cool badge under your name here on the FISD. (Street cred). 3. Access to EI rocker badges (coming soon) to go above your FISD patch (also coming soon)! 4. Access to coin runs for EI awardees only. 5. Certificate for your accomplishment. 6. You'll be one step closer to Centurion! 7. Most importantly, having a more screen accurate looking set of armor!! Know that the entire Staff and those who have reached Levels 2 (and 3) are here to help in any way we can, and that you are more than welcome (and encouraged) to ask any and all questions you may have here on this thread, or contact myself , Sha Sha or Mario. 6. Hi Paxton, Thanks for your application and your patience as we reviewed your submission. CRL and EIB Application Requirements All required photos are now in and, after review, we are pleased to welcome you to Expert Infantry rank. On behalf of the DO team and myself, many congratulations! Other-Armor Fit/Assembly In this area we review observations made by your fellow troopers and the DO team. Some observations may lead to suggestions to improve the overall look of your armor. Note that we consider both text (CRL) and pictures (screen caps/reference images) when reviewing submissions Starting from the top, as already mentioned, you can consider trimming the brow trim just a touch so it stops around the edge of the trap. Reference Image: This next suggestion is for trooping only; not for screen accuracy. In the 501st we strive to maintain that 'movie magic' where we look like we just walked off the movie set. To that end, most TKs add some sort of mesh or cloth behind the teeth to obscure the face of the person wearing it. When we get back to in-person troops, this is just a nice touch. Reference Image merely to demonstrate that in the movies, it was difficult to see the faces of the actors underneath. There's no indication that they actually used mesh on-screen. Next, a couple dressing issues. Ideally we like to see symmetric and even gaps. Your left forearm is riding a bit high, causing it to run into your left bicep, and also causing a larger gap at the wrist. Additionally, your right bicep is sitting quite a bit lower than your left. So next time you're getting suited up, just have a handler take a look that everything is sitting properly. It may also require a minor strapping adjustment. . Reference Image: In the same area, it looks like you have a corner of the forearm sticking out past the cover strip, so we're suggesting you simply snip it off. It will also prevent your undersuit from getting snagged. Reference Image: Continuing on, your TD appears to be sitting a bit high. We're suggesting you consider adjusting the clips so that it sits more in-line with the canvas belt. Reference Images: Another small detail, but on the screen-used suits, the sniper knee was trimmed to be more angular: Finally, again compared to screen-used suits, your thigh ammo rivet is closer to the edge of the ammo pack. Not a big deal at all, and fixing it would require a fair amount of work, but worth mentioning. Reference Images: Centurion Requirements In this section we prepare you for Centurion. More photos may be requested in the future that allow us to make better decisions on possible adjustments. If there are any areas of concern they will be discussed here. Because Centurion photos show much more detail than EIB, items to pertaining to Centurion might be seen there and not here. We try to point out all that we can from what is seen, but the final accuracy is the responsibility of the trooper. First, a small issue that isn't explicitly called out in the CRL, but as stated before we use visual reference as well as text reference to do our reviews. It appears your left shoulder bell is quite a bit longer than the right. For your Centurion app, we'd like you to trim the left shoulder bell to match the size of the right. Alternatively, if it's simply a matter of strapping or camera angle, you can try just adjusting the way it sits to get them to be even. Reference Image: The L3 CRL states: There should be a minimal gap between the shoulder armor and the chest/back plates. Yours actually look pretty good, especially from the back, but it does still look like there's room to bring them in. I think tightening the strapping holding the shoulder bells on should do it. Reference Images: Moving along, the L3 CRL states: The top of the ABS ammo belt should sit at or just above the bottom of the central and vertical abdomen button panels. Yours is sitting *just* a bit too low. On my own kit, I added a couple small strips of velcro to keep my belt from sagging. As you can see in the reference photos, even a slight overlap of the lower ab buttons is acceptable. Reference Images: Next, the L3 CRL states: Ideally there no gap between the abdomen and kidney armor. Abdominal and Kidney Plate align horizontally at top. Your right side gap will need to be brought in some, so I'd suggest adding or tightening the strapping there, as well as making sure the tops are aligned when you get dressed. On the left the gap looks great, you'll just have to be sure the tops are aligned. Reference Images: Next, your 'Han snap' is present, but unfortunately it's sitting too far in compared to the screen-used suits. For Centurion, you'd need to drill it out, fill that hole, the re-set a snap closer to the edge of the ab plate. Reference Image: Added Similarly, it looks like your side rivets are a bit far from the edge. The L3 CRL states: Three rivets, approximately 5/16"(8mm) diameter, are present on the left side of the abdomen armor. Rivets are equally spaced along the depth of the armor and about 10mm from the edge. Again, you would need to drill the rivets out, fill the holes, and re-set them. It is difficult but doable; I believe @TKSpartan has had to do that before. Alternatively, if you have room to do it, I think you could trim off the edges of the ab and kidney so that the rivets are at the correct distance from the edge, but you'd have to adjust the strapping to make sure there is no gap. Reference Images: Moving along, thanks for the correction with your drop boxes, but for L3 they will need to be brought out even further. The CRL states: Drop boxes are vertically aligned with the end of the ammo belt with minimal gap between belt and box. Many of us add a drop of glue to the elastic holding the drop boxes on to keep them from wandering. Reference Image: Finally, I'm 99.9% sure your hand plates are the required latex, but for your Centurion application, make sure to include a photo that shows them bending so that we can confirm they are flexible. Hand guards shall be latex or latex-like, solid white or painted white, and affixed to rubber gloves with no visible strapping or stitching. Reference Image: And that's it! A few corrections, but I have full confidence in your ability to tackle them, so we hope to see your Centurion application soon. Congratulations again on reaching EIB!

  7. Thanks Brien! Yeah, working out in my 110 degree garage isn't quite the same as an air conditioned gym. I was hoping to check out some local garrison events, but I'm guessing there won't be any happening anytime soon. Thanks for the feedback and offer, I'm sure I'll be reaching out with more questions soon! Thank you Glen! I'll be sure to check out the build threads you provided...reading material for tonight! Thank you for the welcome Andrew, much appreciated!

  8. This is my 3D printed helmet. I decided to lead with this, because there's going to be a lot of boring 3D print talk before I get into the fun stuff. I guess throwing the helmet up there gives you an idea of what we're building up to. SPOILER ALERT... I had to repaint my helmet after I took this picture; we'll discuss that another day. Also, I was originally going to post this in the 3D Parts and Technical forum, but ultimately, regardless of the method, this is a ROTK build, so here it lies. Throw my name in with the other ROTK threads, but let's do this with a 3D printer, and finish the project. This should be fun. About two months ago I started searching the forums for complete 3D Print builds. This started somewhat out of curiosity, but honestly I think it really started because my wife asked if it could be done. Right off the bat, I found a few threads that looked promising, including Andrewhitc's 2017 thread where he was designing some pretty awesome ROTK models, and most notably, Cricket's Kid-sized FOTK build. After reading through miles of forum posts, I decided that I was going to 3D Print a full ROTK set and see if I could get it approved. Not to sound too cheesy, but this is my journey. I'll try to update this as much as possible and use this forum as motivation to complete everything by Halloween. I started by researching full armor builds on YouTube. Of course I ran into some interesting videos, but noticed that everybody seemed to be printing the same file from Thingiverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:391664) While a fun prop, it just doesn't look very accurate and all the results I keep seeing seem somewhat fake, if that makes sense. They looked 3D printed. In my searches, I came upon the Galactic Armory videos, which I thought were great. Though The Big Baby sticks to clones (which I'll build next) his Coruscant Guard build was pretty impressive and was ultimately what led to his 501st approval. Additionally, in one of his videos, he mentioned NerdForgeDesigns which brought me to this: Not bad for an $8 STL file. If you're interested look here https://www.etsy.com/listing/808047010/ro-style-stormtroop-helmet?ref=shop_home_active_4&crt=1 The designer was very helpful and worked with me when I ran into a few issues. I highly recommend them. After dropping the 8 bucks, I fired up Meshmixer, Simplify3D, and the CR-10S and got to work. For this print, I'm using Inland PLA+ and ABS in 1.75 from Microcenter. Here's a look at my settings: These are basic nozzle/ layer height settings. I've fiddled around with everything up to a 1mm nozzle @ .5 layer height, but haven't been pleased with the results. Until I'm done with this armor, I'm sticking with the .4 @ .2. I like to slow down the first layer height in order to assure proper adhesion. I typically "babysit" the printer for the first few layers. I experimented with rafts and immediately threw away my prints. Building a brim seems like a great approach. This teamed up with the helper discs I'll show later almost guarantee proper bed adhesion. Standard infill settings Supports are tricky. In the Max Overhang Angle, I currently have this set to 70, but I'm almost always generating my own supports. I'll explain this later. Temp is where this starts getting fun. I'm pushing my filament out at 225 which is the max advertised for Inland PLA+. Check your filament specs, but I've found that if I'm pushing out higher temps on both the extruder and bed, adhesion isn't an issue. Another approach is to run the first layer higher and then settle down a little lower for the remainder of the print. I tried this and had some good results, but if the filament can handle higher temps, do it. Of course, this all needs to be monitored. If I start running into misprints or shifted lines, this and speed are typically where I make adjustments. Cooling is pretty much standard. No G-Code changes Standard Script settings. SPEED, SPEED, SPEED. Nicco Industries did a great video on speed settings. Check it out here https://youtu.be/UJF7vnJ1rNg Essentially, he found little difference between 60mm/sec prints and 180mm/sec. Basically, with the amount of filling, sanding and painting you're doing post-print, the quality differences are negligible. Ok. Now that the boring stuff is out of the way, let's start making some armor. I'll start dropping pics like they're hot soon. SECOND SPOILER ALERT... I'm currently printing out the last two pieces of the entire armor set and ordered most of my soft parts. Additionally, I've already reached out to the community with general questions and others regarding sizing; everyone's been super helpful and incredibly friendly. The reason I'm saying all this is because with the entire armor set completely printed, the only reason I won't finish by my self-imposed deadline is if I lack motivation. I know that 3D printing isn't for everyone, but I haven't seen many threads where someone actually completes one of these projects. Additionally, If I can contribute to the community in some way, I'll be happy. I'll add more later.

  9. Hi troopers, I recently recorded a little video talking about OT TK coverstrips and approximately how long they should be in comparison to the armour / armor. Of course, this is just my opinion and, as always, each suit in ANH/ESB was hand made so there will be variations. However, my thoughts are supported by reference photos. Hope this is helpful. :-) Dan / CableGuy

  10. Hello FISD, My name is Paul and I live in Lincoln, CA. I've loved SW since being a wide eyed 4 year old in '77. My goal is to join the ranks of the 501st, I'm guessing the Central California Garrison, as an ANH TK Stunt and I will aim for Centurion level out of the gate. I've been looking for a volunteer opportunity and what better and fun way than with the 501st. Completely new to costume/armor building, so I know I'll be seeking A TON of guidance from FISD. I'm already obsessed with researching these forums and I'm already amazed at the wealth of information here, as well as the "troopers helping troopers" mentality. I've already spent a good deal of time in the New Recruits section, and I've read through all 50+ pages of the "where to buy armor" thread and I'm utilizing justjoseph's supplies list as I gather tools in preparation for my future build. I've also purchased 421 boots from IB, since they just had their August wave (ETA of 8/13!!). I still need to read through more build threads, I've only skimmed through a couple so far. Oh, and I will definitely start my own build thread once I pull the trigger on my armor kit. I do have an initial question regarding armor kits. I feel I'm in a little bit of a quandary with which kit to buy and here's why. I'm "a little short for a stormtrooper" at about 5'7", 180 lbs. From everything I've read, ANH derived kits (ATA, AP, RS, etc.) can work for my height and weight. But here's my dilemma. I'm a gymrat and do a lot of weightlifting and my build is top heavy. Basically, I have a 33 inch waist, 30 inch inseam but really wide shoulders, chest and back. My coat size is a 42-44. I have never even seen TK armor in person, but I feel like ANH derived armor would work for my lower body, but I'd need upper body armor from one of the "larger trooper" vendors (RT, AM, etc.). Part of me leans toward ANH derived, but I'm nervous about the chest and back plates being too narrow and having too much gap between them and the shoulder bells (since I want to build towards Centurion). Then part of me says go with the "larger trooper" kits and just cut down length, but I get nervous about having to trim too much length and losing the correct shape of the armor pieces. Ahhhh, I'm stuck in analysis paralysis! I'm guessing my best course of action is to email vendors with these questions, but figured someone here might have some ideas. LOL...I found the dude below and while he's REEEALLY exaggerated, he kinda, sorta fits my body profile, haha: Sorry this intro is a little long winded. I really, really appreciate any and all feedback anyone can provide. I can't wait to dive deeper into my Imperial journey! Help me FISD, you're my only hope! (I know that's a quote from rebel scum, but the sentiment fits!)

  11. HSP asked if I'd be up to the challenge of building one of their R1 TK kits and making a tutorial here and I said sure will! So I got the big brown box last week and here is what it looked like: There were 2 missing parts and one extra part sent. I sent a message to HSP and the parts are in the mail. No big deal since I didn't start till today.

  13. I always sand wet, helps the sandpaper last a little longer and doesn't get clogged as quickly. I normally use a 240 grit wet & dry on spray putty and blade putty (if needed), apply primer then a light hand sand with 600 grit. Everyone has their own way buy this works for me

  14. Reason its in the 501st area is we can only sell merch to 501st members as per the Operations protocol 501st member means you must have an approved costume and have been issued a TK/Legion ID number. Article IX: Merchandise and Branding 1. The 501st Legion is a club based on a copyrighted property and is not authorized to profit from the sales of merchandise bearing images or ideas from the STAR WARS property. 2. Merchandise or materials created to promote or advertise the 501st Legion (referred to herein as "merchandise") will be sold only to members of the 501st Legion and Rebel Legion and at cost. Merchandise is not to be sold to the general public unless authorized and be approved by Legion Command and Lucasfilm

  15. A lot more sanding but hopefully will solve some pin hole issues. I do tend to add blade putty a little thicker, it can shrink when drying so by adding a little more it does help fill in those pesky holes and scratches

  17. Hi Justin, I would suggest , for ensure the best look to your L2 ESB TK , (the same Glen has pointed), to just make a cut to match the left one. Thank you mate.

  18. I would suggest making the appearance match the other leg as you have taken off the edges on the other thigh cover strip and it is also sitting above the angle ridges.

  24. Mine is rather easy.... I spent almost 25 years as an Artilleryman in the Royal Canadian Artillery, hence Gunner. As we always say once a Gunner....always a Gunner! The 27 was one of the call signs I had as the Battery Seageant-Major. So Gunner27 My TKID is 71418, If you take the seventh, fouteenth and eighteenth letters of the alphabet you get GNR, which is the abbreviation for Gunner.

  26. Just a quick update: I am off to school soon and must put this project on hold once again. While my progress tapered off toward the end of the summer, I think I did a lot of good work and I'm happy with what I did. I'll be back!! *temporarily vanishes into the shadows for a few months for school*

  27. Hey Mario, It ends above the ridge, JUST below what's visible - you can see I have the ammo pack tilted up a little to help it not catch on my shin and that's just barely covering it. But that knee ammo pack is glued on there pretty good and covered in cracks, so it's not coming off...

  30. I've built a lot of sets of armor in my 13 year 501st career. The last set being a HSP Mudtrooper. I've built 3 sets of TK armor as well....First Order, ESB TK, and Stormtrooper Commander. I've built a lot of clones as well as building a shoretrooper, death trooper, and Tank Commander from R1. I started with the helmet tonight. Here is what it looked like out of the box: I also laid out the abs parts and the resin parts together: The helmet I got is resin. Pull is ok. I don't see anything odd about it and clean up has been pretty easy so far. I let the helmet sit in the sun for about 30 minutes so the resin warmed up and was easier to sand. I got the major seam line mostly off with a hand held sander and sanding sponge. Pretty easy. There is going to be some difficult sanding in places but I'll get that later. I wanted to get the eyes, frown and head opening cut out tonight. Eyes went pretty easy. Head opening I didn't do it all because some areas are thicker and I was trying to maximize my time on the eyes and frown. The frown is where I spent the most time and will have to re-visit. The CRL model helmet isn't accurate to the movie and I want to get this cut out and fitted like the movie helmet. The frown piece sits behind the opening and there is a seam there. The most difficult part is going to be cutting the frown from the inside of the helmet and getting the edges just right so the frown piece will sit correctly. I'll probably have to head up the frown piece to get it to merge/sit correctly. I'll cross that bridge when I get to that part. I'll need to cut more of the frown out but that will be for another day. You can see how much more I'll need to cut and how it sits right now.

  32. Trying to make some progress on my kit. Belt Boxes: As previously noted, the boxes that ship with the kit are mostly incorrect. The large pouch and front boxes are passable but the other 2 smaller ones are simply unacceptable. I printed these black boxes from files obtained from 3D Empire. As I do not like PLA as a prop material, I will be molding and casting these masters using a semi-rigid resin. Possibly heavier but will be much more durable. During prep, I added some hardware that will make attaching to the belt easier I think.

  33. I will just add from time to time you may see [APPROVED] on some EIB applications this is due to it being an additional EIB award which are not issued numbers, (you only get one EIB number awarded) normally you would see [APPROVED] with a 2nd or 3rd or 4th or so on in the title depending on the amount of additional awards the member has.

  34. March to 1000 update and announcement. We are steadily approaching the big number, and actually even closer than any of us had realised. Approved (986) We are officially now at 14 to go!

  36. Hi Stephanie! The kind of paint you have there is acrylic, which may adhere to your helmet (and ab buttons) at first, but unfortunately it will simply not last, and will flake/rub off very quickly. Water based paints simply do not bond to plastic the way enamel (oil based) paints do, so it's better to go with enamel from the start. (Trust me on this one). You can pick up small containers of enamel paint at any hobby/craft store, and I also suggest purchasing some quality brushes to apply it with, not those cheap "throw away" ones you find at discount stores. Bad brushes = bad results. I would also recommend picking up some mineral spirits to clean the brushes with (thoroughly) after each use. This is your build thread, so please feel free to ask ALL the questions you have... we are here to help every step of the way! Posting photos will be very helpful, especially when you come across an issue that you need assistance with.
