  2. Glueup Part I -- Thoughts on glue OK, this is it. Time to slather on glue and make things stick together. First, my thoughts on sticky stuff. Warning, though. I get longwinded, so feel free to skip this and jump to the next post with more Star Warsy content. Since my build was considerably interrupted by a move and lots of Life Stuff, I've had my armor well over a year. Plenty of time to think about how I wanted to handle the glueup. I know that the #1 go-to glue is E6000 for ease of reversibility. But I've used it before for other things and I hate the stuff. The fumes and odor are overpowering, and the frustrating wait times for clamping can sometimes exceed 24 hours for a single clamp-up. But there is that reversibility thing, which is important. But here's the thing: As a woodworker I'm very familiar with gluing things up that simply are not reversible -- simple joints like butts and rabbets can conceivably be undone, but more than likely it destroys the joint. More complicated joints like dadoes, mortise-and-tenon, and dovetails simply cannot be undone in any real sense. I'm used to this and accept it as part of the permanence of glue and am comfortable with it. The key is being really, really, really sure you're doing it right the first time. As an example of big project I've done in the last couple years (and, indulging in the opportunity to show it off any chance I get), here's a solid-cherry Civil War officer's field desk I designed and built as a project for Woodworker's Journal magazine. This desk incorporates butt joints, dadoes, rabbets, half-blind dovetails, mortise-and-tenon, and tongue-and-groove joints -- and every one of those joints is done with standard woodworking glue which you just can't take apart. So the point is this: I'm willing to take the risk with permanent glue for the sake of shortening the working time, lowering the odor and being able to serve the Emperor. With that in mind, I plan to use four kinds of glue for my armor. For the main build, for strength and speed of curing time I plan to use regular ABS cement and Duco cement. Both make pretty permanent joints, cure quickly, and are very strong. Although I've used ABS glue a lot for plumbing work, I hate the stuff. The fumes are awful, and the working time is very, very short -- you just don't have much time to get it on and get things in place. For that reason, I'll probably use more Duco than ABS cement. The fumes aren't nearly as bad and the working time is a good bit longer. Also, unlike ABS cement which you have to brush on or use that funky swab thing attached to the underside of the lid, Duco cement comes in a tube with a fine-tip nozzle, making application very easy. For small things that require only little dabs of glue, I plan to use a gel formula super glue. I'll probably use this for the Ab button plates and the belt rivet covers, and maybe the sniper knee. Just a couple of tiny dots at the corners will hold great, and if I ever do want to remove those it'll just take sliding a razor knife under the corners to pry them free. Finally, I'll attach the outside cover strips on the arms and legs with good ol' E6000, for two reasons: First is that there is inevitable glue squeeze-out when doing the cover strips. Don't care about that on the inner strips, but I do on the highly visible outer strips. E6000 squeeze-out is a snap to remove with stick or thumbnail, and the strips will look perfect. Second, I do want the ability to resize the armor someday should I lose weight -- always a goal for me -- or sell the armor to someone smaller than me. By using E6000 on the outer cover strips, those can easily be peeled off in the back, and I can then cut through the joint seam and resize from the back as needed. So there you go, my thoughts on glue. Starting in the next post, I'll actually start using the stuff. A.J.

  4. Zsherman, thank you for the support. Update, Well I got my ukswrath’s TK helmet audio system and figured out how to mount all the components. Since most people mount everything behind the chest plate I chose to do the same however, since I coated the inside of my armor with flex seal, Velcro will not stick to it. Since I had the suspenders attached to my abdomen I incorporated a chest rig that would connect to the suspenders. The first one I build was just to rough-out the design. Here is the second version in place. I modified this version but forgot to take pictures of the final design. So what you see here is two elastic strap pockets for the Icon and the Amplifier w/ rechargeable battery. The two strap that run vertical are secured along the top with a 1” square of Velcro. I later changed the top strap on the Amplifier w/ rechargeable battery and used some 1/8” shock cord. I also added two outside edge elastic wire routing loops. The back side of the whole chest rig is a pouch that can hold my money clip or even a cell phone since I have been at a loss for where to carry this stuff when I am in costume. The whole chest rig is held in place with two Velcro straps that wrap around each suspender straps and Velcro to the backside of the chest rig. Inside the helmet, I mounted the two Hovi speakers and routed the cabling with Velcro. I made two elastic loop that will slide along my left arm and hand to hold the PTT cable in place under the armor and secure the button inside my left hand. Sorry no picture, but you get the idea. Once all this was figured out I packed up the TK kit and my Mando kit for DragonCon. 16 days and a wake-up. This is the first time in 10 years that my DragonCon kits were done with time to spare for DragonCon. I hope I didn’t just jinx myself. Well that is everything so far and I am still waiting to hear back on the Centurion status. I hope to start on the Jedah Patrol Pack in the next few days. Thanks for the interest.

  6. When I started the process of building my ANH Stunt TK I regretted not spending the extra to get the kit fully trimmed up front, or even fully built; however, nearing the completion of the build I found myself becoming more than a little nostalgic for this part of the journey that was ending. I’ll have to relive the journey vicariously by following other trooper’s new builds, because my wife will kill me if I attempt to start another. At certain times of the year this embargo is lifted, generally around Blu-Ray / movie releases, May 4th and Force Friday, the recent correspondence from LFL outlines the lift of the embargo: "While there is currently a retail moratorium on character appearances in effect, it is being lifted for the week of September 24th - 30th for the SOLO Blu-Ray release and then again for the weeks between November 15th - December 31st to celebrate the holiday season. All fans, costumed or otherwise, can participate with retailers of their choice within these windows with the restriction that costumed appearances must not be used in the advertising for the event. Although these store appearances will be treated like an open invite, we’ll leave it to the fan groups to independently organize around these events as they see fit. LFL will not need to approve or coordinate these". "Please note that retail locations should not include restaurants, bars, or venues with no apparent reason to feature Star Wars characters. If the retail location does not stock Star Wars products you should NOT be attending." As always there are strict rules, please speak to your Garrison Commanding Officer, Squad Leader or if you have one Garrison Events Coordinator before organising any event. *REMEMBER* Always follow your garrison/squad's guidelines when in comes to organising Disney/LFL promotional troops, only command staff can deal direct with LFL. Do you enjoy using your knowledge to help out future and existing Troopers? If so, we would like to invite you to join the Imperial Attaché program! Members of the I.A. team are chosen to help out not only those here on the boards, but on a local level as well. Our aim is to have at least one in each and every Garrison, Squad and Outpost in the entire legion to be the eyes and ears of the FISD on a local level. A suggested level of EIB or above is preferred, as part of the duties include assisting those aiming for levels 2 and 3, but is not a requirement. Being active on the boards on a regular basis , welcoming new members and helping out where you can is, though. Some of the benefits: 1. Access to exclusive Attaché merch., including patches, etc. 2. Having the Imperial Attaché title under your name. 3. Being a part of the team that welcomes new and prospective members of the FISD. 4. Being the "go-to" person in your Garrison, Squad or Outpost. 5. Exclusive access to the Attaché HQ area, Imperial Propaganda Machine (newsletter) and merchandise discussions. These programs were designed for those who choose to take their armor above and beyond the minimum requirements for basic 501st Legion approval. It gives you the chance to show a level of dedication and pride that takes your armor closer to being as "screen accurate" as possible, without as much extra work as you may realize! It also works on giving a better look to the Legion as an entity, and you can bet others will take notice of your hard work. The 501st has a list of detailed requirements for Basic approval, (level 1), EIB, (level 2) and Centurion, (level 3) which can be found here in the Costume Reference Library, (CRL) http://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:FISD_CRL Here are a few of the questions people may be wondering about: 1. "I am a (tall/short/heavy/thin) Trooper. Can I still apply? Of course! These programs are open and encouraged for all sizes of TKs, as long as the costume is correct and meets the guidelines. There are many specific build tutorials to every option, as well as a vast network of fellow TKs on the FISD to help you out and offer suggestions. 2. "How much extra will I have to pay for extra items"? The cost is actually quite reasonable, considering the few extra supplies you will need, which are listed in the requirements area. While it may run you a little more to implement these additions to your costume, they will go a long way to improving accuracy. All needed items can be found for sale on this thread: https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/16-ongoing-sales-project-orders/ While blasters are not required for basic approval, for EIB and Centurion levels they are, and may need upgrades (also listed in the CRL). 3. "I haven't even got my kit yet, is it too early to start planning"? Actually, aiming for Centurion is easiest to do right out of the box. 4. "I have my basic TK approval, can I still get in these programs"? In a word... absolutely! 5. "Are there any "perks" to this extra work and cost"? Besides knowing that you have a great looking set of armor, the 501st and FISD believes you should be deservedly recognized for your achievement(s), and allows you to wear the appropriate embroidered "rocker" badge of rank (available for a very minimum cost) on your shirt, helmet bag, etc., as well as rank decals to put on your armor bin. You will also have access to select "challenge coin" runs, receive (free) a cool certificate for your new rank, and have your title posted below your name in your FISD signature. Plus, once you reach these levels, you will have the extra knowledge to help out those who are looking to apply as well. 6. "Is it hard to apply, and what happens then"? After basic approval, all you do is make sure your armor is up to the standards set forth in the CRL, post a thread with the required photos in the appropriate area (see below), and wait a bit for the D.O.s (Deployment Officers) to address it. (Hint: Studying other people's threads before you submit can be a GREAT help). These are also listed on the main page of the FISD site. While waiting for approval, you will get some comments from others who will offer suggestions and constructive advice to help you out. If you should need any changes, the DOs will let you know, so you can adjust accordingly. Don't be dismayed if you do need changes... it's all for your benefit! After you are approved for EIB, then you can submit for Centurion. EIB https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/19-request-expert-infantryman-status/ Centurion https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/72-request-centurion-status/ Just remember that the FISD is here to help you every step of the way with whatever other questions you may have, but if you can't seem to find what you are looking for in your research, just ask away here on the forums! Our goal is to reach the one thousand mark of Troopers who have earned their Expert Infantry Badge, and although we are well on our way to this goal and have just passed the 800 mark! The amount of approved submissions is increasing (over 80 this year alone) thanks to the dedication of those willing to go the "extra mile" toward screen accuracy. Here is a brief description of EIB as written by Paul (Daetrin), our founder: "Expert Infantryman status is not required for members of this detachment. It should be viewed as an optional set of requirements for those who wish to take the accuracy of their costumes to the next level, and be recognized accordingly. We're a costuming club - think of it as an award for costuming excellence and you get the picture. The requirements will not replace or supersede 501st standards, but only serve as an inspiration for the level of accuracy that can be achieved. The standards are meant to be high but achievable..." Besides the added pride you will have in your armor, those reaching this level can purchase exclusive EIB gear (patches, decals, coins etc.) and get a free certificate for your accomplishment. If you are interested or would like more information about the program head here that will help. You can also contact myself "Pretzel" or any Imperial Attaché, and we will be more than happy to assist you! FISD Merch Reform The FISD for sale and merchandise rules have been in a place for a long time - they were liberally taken directly from CTN (the 501st clonetroopers detachment) and haven’t had to be tweaked much in 10+ years. For the most part things have been going well, however we’ve seen an increasing amount of reports of buyers making demands that fall outside reasonable expectations. We have had more than one occasion during merch runs, where a member files a PayPal dispute immediately upon seeing someone else post that they have received their items, and the filing member has not received theirs yet. This is a major pain. It locks up the PayPal account of the person managing the run, and could potentially cause other members to panic and file claims. Nobody wins in this situation. It clogs up the management of the run, creates a mob mentality, and cannot lead to anything productive regarding possible resolution to what wasn't a problem until that PayPal dispute was filed. The run manager (whether the DMBO or not) is acting on behalf of the Detachment to include the membership, and going straight to PayPal disputes is disrespectful of everyone involved, to include other members who ordered the item(s). Filing PayPal disputes without seeking resolution or an answer from the run manager/Detachment Command Staff should carry a suspension of no more than 30 days - really it is the same as someone messing up the forum experience for others, except that this is actually messing with people's lives and money. To protect against this, the following changes are being made to merch runs for FISD effective immediately: 1. Buyers have 30 days from shipment to report a missing or lost item for domestic runs. Sellers are only required to retain proof of shipment for 30 days. Why? Domestic shipments should normally arrive in about 7 days. Some people are claiming items never shipped 5 months after a run was closed, which is way too long to ask people to retain shipping material. If your domestically shipped item hasn’t arrived after 30 days IOW, you lose the right to claim it was never shipped. 2. Buyers have 60 days from shipment to report a missing/lost item for international runs. Most items are received in under 30 days, however we know some countries are pretty bad. Sellers must keep shipping documentation for 60 days on international items. If the shipper can provide tracking information (e.g. a tracking number for domestic or a customs form for international), they are not held liable for items lost or missing in the mail. Any concerns post them on the announcement thread due shortly. 8. Hello Luc,, thank you very much for your many tips. I try to realize them all. All that helps me a lot. Some things you do not see on your own. Thanks guys.

  9. Definitely better! My friend is a lot shorter than you, so we're having to make mods to her suit that may not necessarily apply to your build. I don't mind if you use my pics for comparison, but always use screen references first because your kit will ultimately be compared to the TKs we all know and love in ANH. I like this screen grab of the Hero TK because it shows the whole smaller suit nicely. The chest plate is cut short, but it totally works. That belt is slipping, Luke! And this one, too. Short TK Luke on the far right. To me, your chest still looks a little too large. If the center line on the breast plate is where you want it (maybe move it up a smidge?), then you might want to begin trimming from the bottom. Take a look at how much of the vertical center ridge you can see on these full-sized troopers (it's just above the ab button box). That's what you want to emulate, even when you're Vertically Challenged. It's details like that that make a sized-down suit look its best (IMO, of course). Okay, a little off topic, but I just noticed the pinch in your kidney... I know you're on the smaller side, but I'm a little concerned about this. The WTF kit is really, really small. You probably won't need to cut the butt plate at all. I have not had to make any huge alterations to the kit for my 5'4", 110lb frame (which was pleasantly unexpected!). I trimmed less than a centimeter off of the sides of the kidney and ab plates, and that was just to remove the ugly parts around the edges. If this kind of detail was located at the bottom of the kidney, it wouldn't be a big deal at all because you're going to need to cut the kidney from the bottom to size it down for length. I don't know how much space you have in there, so you might be able to cut all of it off. Still, it's better to have more space inside (and add padding) than to have the suit fit you snug. I strongly recommend that you shape your ab and kidney to fit via hot water bath first before making any additional cuts. Here's my WTF kit before and after shaping in hot water. (FYI, I spent most of my efforts on shaping both sides of the kidney, and a little bit on the right side of the ab. The left side of the ab didn't need any fixing.) After shaping, try everything on again (just the ab and kidney together, not the chest) and you'll get a much better idea of how much you may need to take in around the waist area. For me, I didn't have to remove any extra plastic. If you don't need to take extra plastic off, then you have two options: 1. figure out how to flatten out that crimp (a heat sealing iron would do the job quite well, actually), or 2. send Walt a message with pics of the crimp, tell him that you can't cut off that area of the kidney due to sizing, and ask for a replacement. He's really great to work with on things like this!

  10. Normally once you are ready to go EIB you will fill out an application in that section and once posted members will offer feedback if adjustments need making

  27. There's also the FISD blaster reference that has a hefty section on Painting the E-11, you may wish to check it out. https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/topic/32111-fisd-e-11-blaster-reference/ Hope this helps! Have fun painting! Sent from my SM-G390W using Tapatalk

  28. Give it a black base coat all over. Then mask off the rail, t-tracks and pistol grip. Hit it with the hammered finish. The counter should be smooth. The scope can also be hammered finish too. -Jim Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  29. The screws look correct, but the ideal placement of the slips will be touching the bottom of the control panel and touching the end caps. You'll need to paint the screws black as well.

  30. Hi guys, Thanks for the advice! Ill sand the inner boxes a bit more and if that’s not working a hot water bath will probably do Before cutting the ab and the cod, Ill first test the whole armor to see if it’s really needed. Fingers crossed for no cutting. Ill send a photo once the armor is ready to ear. Here’s a photo of the screws in the TD. What do you think? Would they work? Ha and yes, thanks for the advice on the cover strips @TheSwede Was aware that they are waaaaaay to long – will sand/cut them down for sure, in this way it was a bit easier for me to glue them on. Thanks again!

  31. Thanks for the heads-up on that, Tony. I'm moving on to other areas of the armor for now, and will come back to those snaps later. A.J.

  32. Congrat on getting your son into the Galactic Academy! I just enrolled my 10-year-old daughter as Rey. Now I can troop with both of my kiddos! And yep, the RS kit arrived, but I've been too busy to get the pics uploaded! My office space/nerd room is such a mess right now that I can barely walk in it. I need to get things cleaned up before doing too much more online Star Warsing.

  34. I did do that on a small split I had on the left knee. The back gaps however were really hardly fixable. The little bit that is still there now is potentially fixable. Otherwise I might still go for what @ukswrath proposed. I do like the look like this more than with the back fully trimmed away though.

  35. Hello Rat, Hello Daniel, thanks a lot for your help and remarks. They will help a lot. To Rat: The lower ear screw is v-slottet like the others. I think on the photo you do not see it that good. Here is a close up picture The right biceps i try to fix it. Straightening the back plate wings means to cut off the return edge at the wings so i can bend them (perhaps with hot woater). Right? To Daniel: I painted the logo with black permanent marker. Is that o.k. ? Here is a picture: Next time i will take pictures with help. But currently i´m alone, because the family is on vacation. This week i have free house. Thanks again for your help.

  39. Finally made the step I have been avoiding today. Glued the cover strip on the back of the shins! It is now just a matter of if it all comes together like it should. I plan to use industrial strength white Velcro on the cover strip to hold it together. If that doesn’t work I may have to go with hooks or jimmy up something. Other small stuff. I went to add the snap on the ab. Unfortunately I already had a snap on the opposite side in use. Easy fix, I just cut off the tip with some pliers. Then I smashed it down flush with a hammer. Finally put it into the snap setting base and hit it a few more time to level it out. Little dab of E6000 and boom. Another thing. Added some scrap ABS to the top of the snaps in the shoulder to prevent them from pulling out. One already did but I’m hoping this fixes it. If not I can always make new ones. 40. A very minor update. I did some more reading up on the Hengstler 400 counter boxes that were used on E-11s in ANH. I gather the ones with the 'eagle' logo predate WWII as the Hengstler company changed the Eagle logo in the late 1930's to avoid any association with the Nazi party. Interesting stuff, but anyway, the front end of these seems to have been made of some kind of high grade cast white metal, with most being plated in cadmium which gives them that sort of brass like finish we often see in pictures of vintage counters. The cadmium was there to prevent oxidisation I think. The rear cover of the boxes are usually a light grey coloured hard plastic of some kind. The prop department for ANH painted them black for the film, and so I have tried to represent these original finishes in places like corners where the prop departments paint may have worn off. The front of the box has been dry brushed on corners and edges with Tamiya X-31 Titan Gold to try and replicate glimpses of the cadmium plating. It has come out more a silver colour in the pics I have taken though so you will have to take my word for it that it is a more brass sort of colour in reality. The back cover was similarly dry brushed on the corners and edges where paint may get rubbed off, this time using Tamiya XF-19 Sky Grey to represent the original light grey plastic used. The last detail addition is the 2 electrical connections at the front of the box. These I gather are not seen on all Hengstler 400 counters and they are I believe a removable part. The connectors seen here have been fabricated from plasticard, painted with Tamiya XF-16 Flat Aluminium, and then given a dark enamel wash to tone them into the rest of the paintwork. I am not sure if I actually like these yet or not, and so they are not fixed in place, but have enough friction to hold them in place anyway. Paul

  41. August 10th Progress (Wife's Suit) - Thighs, biceps, forearms Hi all, I've been following Ukswrath's Anovos build thread, and am working on all of the pieces that need to be glued together first. Let me know about the pictures, I've checked the fit of all the pieces and they look to be fairly form-fitting without being too tight. I am keeping the return edges in place - except for the bottoms of the forearms, and can trim them later for comfort. Please let me know what you think of the progress thus far. I think i have to rethink the bottom of the one thigh piece, I think y'all will know what I mean when you look at the pics. Hope all is well with everyone out there! Thanks again for all of your help!

  43. Great progress. Can you show a photo of your exact issue that's making you consider cutting the cod? It's usually something that is only required if you are particularly short. I have found that women tend to have some misalignment between the kidney and butt plate due to hips, so you may have to add some extra strapping or some other solution there once it's all strapped together.

  44. The sides of the boxes flare out just a little so take them down a few mm and that should help and I would start with the inner boxes and shave of 2mm and then test if they go in properly and then cut the outer to match Well I´m not a female but...based on your pic it looks like you can raise the whole torso section up and still have clerance at the neck/throat so I would try that first….and...if that`s not a GO then I call upon the "AB-slicer master" aka @Cricket as she most definetly can help you with that They are slotted pan heads so that`s all good, how do they match up to the TD size wize? Overall you made some great progress and besides from your questions I just want to ad a small note about the cover strips, they seem to be a bit long in general so you might want to check on that to avoid eventuell snagging and pinching And finally: Frank...there`s actually 4 screws for the TD (sorry, just couldn`t help my self) Oh BTW congrats on the "hall of fame"

  45. Lots of progress! It’s all looking great. For the boxes I’d say try a hot water bath and maybe that’ll make them a bit more flexible For the ab, I don’t have much experience with cutting so I’ll leave that for someone who does. And the screws. I’m not an expert in that either but I think they might be passable. But I’m sure the ones in charge of that will chime in shortly. I’d hate to see you have to pay a fortune in shipping for 2 screws. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  46. KABOOM! And if my head was not inflated enough, there were no recommendations to fix anything or do anything different for Centurion. I am totally speechless since I know and see all the issues with my kit but I guess that is always the case with people who seek to do their best and are never completely happy with the results. Don't get me wrong, I do love my kit and I am very pleased with how it turned out but there are things I would like to fix on it. I also realize that I can get stuck in a cycle of fix this or that and never finish the kit.
