It's funny how we critique the heck out of our armor and yet all the fans see is a STORMTROOPER! Nice job Sean3 points

Halloween candy hand out was a success. A lot of happy kids and adults. And a lot of lessons learned. I have a newfound respect for all those that troop. After 2.5 hours of standing, I was in pain, lol. Much respect indeed. Granted my armor is still not optimal for movement until I can adjust it after basic approval. Key takeaways... Wow, it’s hard to see. And my left lens was continually fogged. Not fun. My thighs still need work. My rigging system won’t adequately hold them up. Part of the problem is the rear cut in to my butt cheeks. I guess the option is to trim the back top shorter? I put foam behind the knee plate but alas, dropping thighs didn’t help. Not much movement in the arms. Need to figure out how to gain more mobility. Shins and my fat calves still worry me. I plan on using the hook method. This is the last item I need to do. I just don’t know if it will work well. This next armor party I might ask for more expert opinion. My Velcro system throughout the armor held up surprisingly well. Might add some snaps once final fitting is squared away. Overall I can almost taste approval! Last night was a blast. I’m paying for it in my shoulders today though... OK, future Troopers, many of you have asked about how to set snaps for your armor connections, so I thought I'd whip up a little tutorial. Please note that the example that I am making is based on using the "double snap" connection system (see last photo). I highly recommend this method, especially on the back/kidney, kidney/butt, and ab/kidney connections, as it provides an extra layer of confidence. Yes, it costs a bit more to do due to the extra snaps involved, but you can be sure that no matter what happens, you will NEVER have a piece come loose or fall off on a troop. Some builders may have used others, but after countless troops I have experienced no problems. So here we go.... Materials needed: 1. Hammer 2. Soldering (woodburning) iron. (Available at home improvement and craft stores. WELL worth the $10-$12.00 investment). NOTE: The tip of this thing gets CRAZY hot, so be very careful where you set it. Many come with multiple tips, but I suggest the pointed one. 3. Snap setting kit. (Available at all craft stores). Please note that I am showing both sides of the base... more on that later. Convex side Concave side 4. For this purpose, I am using 2 inch (5cm) wide black nylon and 1 inch (2cm) black nylon. The 1 inch strips will be attached directly to your armor. I suggest using E-6000 glue and clamps for this. 5. Snaps, of course! Don't "cheap-out" when buying these. The cheap ones come undone very easily and are garbage. For this tutorial, I am labeling the 4 parts as such: STEP ONE Cut the 2 inch strapping to about 4 inches long** (or as needed) for the particular connection. Cut the 1 inch nylon into 2 inch lengths as seen below. **NOTE: The actual length will depend on there you are using them, i.e. the kidney to posterior plate connections will be shorter. Just be sure there are no gaps, and that the 1 inch wide base pieces are in the correct position before attaching them. Example: The ends will be a bit ragged and will fray. Use the soldering tool to seal them. Again, using the soldering gun, make 4 holes in the 2 inch wide nylon as seen below. Be careful not to make them too large (just larger than the shaft of the snap base) or the snap may eventually pull out. Take one of the 1 inch wide nylon pieces and slide it up under one end of the 2 inch wide piece, even with the end. Once it is lined up, use the soldering iron to make holes in the 1 inch wide piece. This will assure that the holes for the snaps line up correctly. (VERY important)! You should end up with this: Repeat for other side, but be sure not to get the sides mixed up, as one set of holes may be farther apart. Insert one of the male bases into one of the holes in the 2 inch wide piece. Flip it over and place one of the male snaps on the post. Place the base in the concave side of the snap setting kit base. Place the striking rod in the center (straight up and down) and strike it several times firmly with the hammer. The inside shaft should be sufficiently widened to keep the top from coming off. There... your snap is set! NOTE: Do not attempt to do this step on a regular table. You need a hard surface, and a heavy duty workbench or concrete surface works best. Repeat this step for the remaining 3 holes. Now onto the 1 inch wide strips.. Insert one of the female bases into one of the holes, then (as above) place one of the female snaps on top. Place the female snap base into the convex side of the snap setting base. Again, using the striking rod, give it a few good whacks. (Getting the hang of this now)? This is what you should have at this point (only one end shown) CONGRATULATIONS, you have one strap completed! Now that you realize how easy this is and have it down to a science, repeat as necessary. NOTES 1. For added security, the double snap system can be applied to other areas as well, including shoulder bridge attachments and bicep to shoulder bridge, (example below) This is especially good for those who wear packs (HWT, Sandie, Spacetrooper). 2. Snaps set in elastic (as seen above) can pull out over time with repeated use. For added strength I recommend doubling the elastic over before attaching the snaps. 3. Be sure to use the female base on all the straps that will be glued to your armor. The reason being is that the bottoms are flat, insuring a tight seal. 4. Some folks set the female snaps in ABS instead of nylon when gluing them to the armor. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, it's just a different way of accomplishing the same goal. The reason I use nylon is that I find it conforms to the curved parts of the armor better, and gives a larger surface area for the glue to adhere to. 5. Some use CA (super) glue to attach the 1 inch nylon to their armor. I have found that it can get brittle and break off or even cause warping on ABS due to the heat it puts off while drying. E-6000 needs to be clamped and takes more time, but trust me, it's worth the wait. 6. When gluing the 1 inch nylon to your armor, do NOT keep the 2 inch wide nylon attached with the snaps. Some of the glue may seep through the hole in the snap and glue the whole connection together. Not a good thing. If you should have any questions, just ask here or PM me, and best of luck on your build! Photo 1 (Double snap system.. note clamps). SHOUT OUTS: Gary jr. ( @flashpoint0214 ) The guy who introduced me to the double snap system! Jeremy (Copper) who supplied the nice clean photo of the double snap system.1 point

Shins Continued - Sniper Knee. Apologies in advance, I didn't save all of my pictures from the trimming process because I ended up pausing on the sniper knee while reshaped the shins in the above hot water bath. Shin trimming was pretty straight forward. A few notes within the process I followed and a slight deviation from build direction per (TM) Paul's build threads. First off was removing the slight return at the bottom of the sniper knee - plate. This is necessary of you want the lower/bottom of the plate to lie perfectly flat when glued to the shin surface. As you can see by the below pic, out of the box mine had about a 1/8th to 1/4 inch return edge that I removed entirely. I found this to be the case with pretty much all ANH reference pics that I could find. When I dry fit the sniper knee to the shin I had an ever so slight overhang on the right side. This is that slight deviation from Paul's build and likely due to my front cover strip return edge being trimmed down to 20 mm (with minimal 1-2 mm additional border between cover strip and return edge). So, I did end up trimming this end ever so slightly (about 1/8th inch) so that it didn't hang over the bevel or ridge where the angle turns toward the rear. For trimming the outer return on the overall (diamond shaped area) of the sniper knee, here's what I decided on which is about 5/16th of an inch (or 9 mm). From what I've able to make out in the ANH reference photos which is rather difficult at times due to image quality on these smaller items, this is pretty close close to cannon.. A personal preference note: Wherever there is a turn in the armor that is rounded, I've attempted to mimic that rounded corner on my armor. Not only does this match the outer edge (see upper bevel, rounded angled-turn at the leading edge) but I believe it may help, ever so slightly, to reduce the likeliness of cracking if there were more of a sharp angled cut. I've used mini rat-tail files and my leather hole cutter to create these various rounded corners. Here's (what was) the finished product which I was not completely satisfied with. Now, don't misunderstand me here. I spent a lot of time ensuring both in dry fit and gluing that the right and left side of the knee lined up perfectly with the shin upper-bevel as well as attempting to center it on the cover strip, fully realizing the resulting crookedness is ANH "Wonkiness", which was by design, part of the armor's charm, campy, screen accurate, etc. I truly respect and appreciate those elements yet my inner (anal retentive or as I like to call it - attention to detail oriented) voice kept convincing me I could do better/fix it. I wanted such a prominent piece to sit straight dammit so, I ended up taking it apart and retrying (see further below and you can be the judge as to how much of a correction or difference it made Next up, the "corrected" sniper knee...1 point

PLA is plenty strong (as long as you don’t go too light on infill) just make sure everything is glued down. The real downsides of 3D printed blasters are more that they can break if dropped and PLA can warp from heat (don’t leave it in a hot car).1 point

Try flipping the ammo belt 180° it may be that you have it upside down. In terms of the sniper plate, glue one side, let it cure for 24 to 48 hours, then do the other and drop a blob of glue in the middle. Sent from my SM-G950F using Tapatalk1 point

It appears MIMIC has disappeared with my money and never delivered the other half of the armor. That being the case, I have ordered the remaining armor from JSIN PROPS. He is a lifesaver and is helping all of us that have been taken advantage of. A vendor has the responsibility to communicate with their customers (no matter what is going on in their life). Also, I may do a Captain Cardinal build instead of a basic FOTK. I am still researching that (I do have a TFA Anovos helmet that i could use). Remaining armor should be here in the next couple of weeks. I cannot wait to get this thing going.1 point

Guys - I've been up to my butt in karate/scouts/work plus just trying to keep up with the DL FB group chatter (they chat a lot) and just haven't had as much time as I'd like to spend on the CRLs. Can we start a new November thread? It would help me greatly to have one place that has the latest in the right format, then I can bang it out quick. Esp. as we'll soon have a Nov newsletter and I'd like to do them in a batch before that goes out.1 point

ROTJ's are also very rare. There are more Legacy Era Female (Joker Squad) TK's in the Legion than there are ROTJ, if you can believe it. A good ROTJ TK is hard to find. I fan-boy'd over one myself at the last celebration. IIRC he was from Mountain Garrison?1 point

Hey Great to hear you`re aiming for Centurion - let`s get you there shall we First: for Centurion idealy there is no gap between kidney/ab (for EIB 12.5mm) meaning you will need bigger shims. Also for Centurion there`s only one seam so sanding and polishing is a must but easy enough to do By looking at the pics I´m with Luc that you should raise the ab plate and that will help with alignment. Looking at this picture (ignore the blue lines for now) it seems as the ends of the back plate gets stuck on your body thus preventing the back to interact properly when you lift the kidney, causing the bunching you mention. I recommend a hot water bath to bend them slightly outwards. Suggestion: after bending the back, start over with the strapping and I say first tape all the back pieces together using gaffa tape from the inside, put the tape close to the edges and two (or maybe just one) in the middle , as indicated by those crappy blue lines and with basicly no gap between the parts. Then see how it looks and feels when lifting the ab/cod to alligne with the top of the kidney as you can see below on Han (again - ignore that red line, not relevant here) Good luck and keep us posted1 point

I originally thought of using malleable metal like solder but it really didn't turn out right. Those micro screws came from a glasses repair kit. The screws were slotted, matching the resin screws on the scope Right? The rubber is already matt in color too and works well. Haha, thanks again Brian!1 point

Hello folks, today I continue with tasks on the scope. I was over ambitous when taking away resin in and around the lens retainer rings on both ends of the scope. I've gone and retouched using green stuff. After curing, smoothed with a round file. I also created a template so that I can better hollow out more of the inside of the scope. Aiming for uniformity and optimal light to pass through. Also test fitted a rubber washer to sit between the retainer ring and the monocular housing. This cleans up the overall look covering up gaps that are seen. The rubber is good too, to hide imperfections in my green stuff sculp. Lastly, I managed to find the right size tiny screws to replace four resin screws on the scope. Pretty happy about this find [emoji2] check out the photos! Cheers mates!! Here's what the charter says about activity definitions: Operations Protocol/Membership An Active Member is defined as a member in good standing who meets the following requirements: Meets all 501st Membership Requirements (i.e. ownership of an approved costume, is over 18 years of age, etc). Has an approved membership record in the 501st Legion Membership Database Maintains active contact with their Garrison CO or GML. Active contact and participation will be confirmed during the annual Legion Census held each year during the month of October. Maintains contact information/membership record in the 501st Legion database either through their Garrison CO or GML. Participates in at least one Garrison or Legion activity per year while wearing an approved 501st costume owned by said member as recorded in the Legion Census. (One year is defined as the period from Legion Census to Legion Census). Examples of an activity include, but are not limited to conventions, charity events, or any activity designated as an official event by a coordinating administrative unit of the Legion. Members who serve in military branches are exempt from activity level requirements if their service renders them unable to meet these requirements. These Minimum Activity Level Requirements should be administered as justly and with as much common sense as possible. A member may retain active status, even if they do not meet all of the requirements listed above at the discretion of their unit Commanding Officer or Legion Command. Remember if you haven't trooped in this census year you may find yourself marked RESERVE, which will mean you will not be able to vote in the next election. From October 1st you can access the census here Note you must be registered on the main forums to participate in the census, register:here OK, it happens. You look at your Legion profile and it shows that your detachment affiliation to FISD is pending, or otherwise incorrect. Why does this happen, and what is detachment affiliation anyway, and what will FISD do about it? The answer is that detachment affiliation is only ever used once a year, and for one purpose. The only time the Legion ever uses it for anything is to determine who can run for DL and who can vote in detachment elections. That's it. Otherwise it is pretty much ignored and not used for anything. The process of validating detachment membership is cumbersome and time consuming because people use different email information between their Legion and detachment logins, and that there is no way to bulk update the rosters. For a small detachment it is not a big deal to do this manually, but for a detachment the size of FISD with hundreds and soon thousands of 501st members, it's impossible. Fortunately we have technical folk both on FISD and in the Legion web team. Once a year they take a feed from FISD's database and do a bulk update on the Legion database. This occurs right before the election cycle starts and is done once per year. Pro tips: 1) Ensure the email address you use on the Legion & FISD boards are the exact same. 2) Ensure that your FISD profile has the correct TKID. 3) If after the bulk update is complete and your profile is still not updated, and you are 100% sure your info is in sync between the two boards, then ask for to the Legion web team. They should get feedback on why this isn't working. 4) If all else fails, ping the FISD staff. Which basically means that we'll simply tell the 501st web team to bulk approve everyone To check detachment affiliation go to the 501st Mb database here then click Your Profile Data. These programs were designed for those who choose to take their armor above and beyond the minimum requirements for basic 501st Legion approval. It gives you the chance to show a level of dedication and pride that takes your armor closer to being as "screen accurate" as possible, without as much extra work as you may realize! It also works on giving a better look to the Legion as an entity, and you can bet others will take notice of your hard work. The 501st has a list of detailed requirements for Basic approval, (level 1), EIB, (level 2) and Centurion, (level 3) which can be found here in the Costume Reference Library, (CRL) http://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:FISD_CRL Here are a few of the questions people may be wondering about: 1. "I am a (tall/short/heavy/thin) Trooper. Can I still apply? Of course! These programs are open and encouraged for all sizes of TKs, as long as the costume is correct and meets the guidelines. There are many specific build tutorials to every option, as well as a vast network of fellow TKs on the FISD to help you out and offer suggestions. 2. "How much extra will I have to pay for extra items"? The cost is actually quite reasonable, considering the few extra supplies you will need, which are listed in the requirements area. While it may run you a little more to implement these additions to your costume, they will go a long way to improving accuracy. All needed items can be found for sale on this thread: https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/16-ongoing-sales-project-orders/ While blasters are not required for basic approval, for EIB and Centurion levels they are, and may need upgrades (also listed in the CRL). 3. "I haven't even got my kit yet, is it too early to start planning"? Actually, aiming for Centurion is easiest to do right out of the box. 4. "I have my basic TK approval, can I still get in these programs"? In a word... absolutely! 5. "Are there any "perks" to this extra work and cost"? Besides knowing that you have a great looking set of armor, the 501st and FISD believes you should be deservedly recognized for your achievement(s), and allows you to wear the appropriate embroidered "rocker" badge of rank (available for a very minimum cost) on your shirt, helmet bag, etc., as well as rank decals to put on your armor bin. You will also have access to select "challenge coin" runs, receive (free) a cool certificate for your new rank, and have your title posted below your name in your FISD signature. Plus, once you reach these levels, you will have the extra knowledge to help out those who are looking to apply as well. 6. "Is it hard to apply, and what happens then"? After basic approval, all you do is make sure your armor is up to the standards set forth in the CRL, post a thread with the required photos in the appropriate area (see below), and wait a bit for the D.O.s (Deployment Officers) to address it. (Hint: Studying other people's threads before you submit can be a GREAT help). These are also listed on the main page of the FISD site. While waiting for approval, you will get some comments from others who will offer suggestions and constructive advice to help you out. If you should need any changes, the DOs will let you know, so you can adjust accordingly. Don't be dismayed if you do need changes... it's all for your benefit! After you are approved for EIB, then you can submit for Centurion. EIB https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/19-request-expert-infantryman-status/ Centurion https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/72-request-centurion-status/ Just remember that the FISD is here to help you every step of the way with whatever other questions you may have, but if you can't seem to find what you are looking for in your research, just ask away here on the forums! Request your free Centurion certificate here If you see any of these Troopers around your Garrison or Squad, be sure to congratulate them! As many of you are aware, the FISD is currently in our March to 1000 program. Our goal is to reach the one thousand mark of Troopers who have earned their Expert Infantry Badge, and although we are well on our way to this goal and have just passed the 850 mark! The amount of approved submissions is increasing (over 80 this year alone) thanks to the dedication of those willing to go the "extra mile" toward screen accuracy. Here is a brief description of EIB as written by Paul (Daetrin), our founder: "Expert Infantryman status is not required for members of this detachment. It should be viewed as an optional set of requirements for those who wish to take the accuracy of their costumes to the next level, and be recognized accordingly. We're a costuming club - think of it as an award for costuming excellence and you get the picture. The requirements will not replace or supersede 501st standards, but only serve as an inspiration for the level of accuracy that can be achieved. The standards are meant to be high but achievable..." Besides the added pride you will have in your armor, those reaching this level can purchase exclusive EIB gear (patches, decals, coins etc.) and get a free certificate for your accomplishment. If you are interested or would like more information about the program head here that will help. You can also contact myself "Pretzel" or any Imperial Attaché, and we will be more than happy to assist you!
