Just a small update about the Grappling Hook Box amp mod... It worked flawlessly. I spray painted the end of the mic cord with black vinyl paint so it would blend in better. I was able to be super loud while at the con! It was really nice to not have to repeat myself when talking to people. I was able to even get trooper's attention in a loud parking garage at the beginning of the DragonCon parade (I was wrangling a bunch of us TKs into canon formation). At some point at DragonCon, I spotted another con-goer dressed as a Jedi in an outside patio area. I was about 40 feet away from him, and I said (in a normal voice), "Ugh, rebel scum." I was very surprised when he looked over at me, waved his hand, and said loudly, "There are no rebels around here!" And I replied, "Huh. There are no rebels around here. I'll move along," and I walked away from him. Everyone in the area erupted in laughter. It was awesome to be so easily heard. Very, very happy with this hack to my Grappling Hook Box!2 points

Rogue One TK Sources (updated 8-10-2020) Since I keep seeing these questions popping up from time to time, I figured I would make this simple for everyone. I do not have experience with some of these sources so if any of you do please chime in. Further, I am not pushing or supporting any of these sources, I am just providing you all the list and what they provide, and you choose who and what you want to go with. Lastly, If I do have experience with a specific source, I will note that and my overall experience with them. I am not pushing any sources, rather supplying you a list to work from if you are having a hard time finding stuff. Please feel free to add to this or provide "creative" comments. ROTK Sources Jimmiroquai Armor, Helmet, Under Suit [email protected] Jim was the first source for ROTK armor and is considered very accurate. The armor is flexible fiberglass and requires painting. Hi Folks, I'm Chuck and am embarking on a Captain Phasma build. Well... I'm hoping to build the kit. It's a complicated situation. My wife has put me on a costume ban because, well, I didn't disclose my costume habit and flew under the radar, haha. Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission? Anyway, since I let the truth out, and I wasn't allowed to get new costumes, I funded her TFA Kylo Ren and she got approved in the 501st. Hah. So now, "Phasma would be a nice compliment to Kylo, right?" And she didn't react when I picked up a Phasma bucket by Shawn Thorrson. So I'm in the clear right? I haven't pulled the trigger on the armor yet, but I'm confident I'm going with a set of Thorrson armor to compliment the helmet. I've met him several times, followed his build threads, and spoke with one of the few owners of his kits. From what I've gathered, he's begun pulling full kits as a one stop shop. I've thought about this for over a year and now that I have a helmet in hand, time to prep and paint one. If I can pull off the helmet, I can pull off the armor. I wasn't going to document the build because I don't want to lead anyone astray. I'm terrified of the chrome finish and the general upkeep and maintenance of the costume. I've decided to go TFA to compliment my wife's Kylo, but I also like the gritty look of Phasma's weathered armor. Additionally, I hope the light weathering of the kit will be more forgiving with the maintenance of the chrome. Realistically this thing is going to get trooped in and it's going to wear over time. Speaking of chrome, I'm going with Spaztix Mirror Chrome, rattle can version. I've used Rustoleum Mirror Chrome and it's not very impressive. Spaztix, in the images below, has a look I can live with. It's aerosol, so easy to apply, and it dries quickly. I guess it's the medium quality? I don't want to break the bank chroming this thing. Maybe one day if I want to liven it up. Alright, so, disclaimer: This isn't a tutorial. It's my attempt at wobbling through this build. If you don't like what I'm doing, don't replicate it. Learn from my mistakes, as I will likely make lots of them. Feel free to offer suggestions, I have a million questions and will ask them as I go. My first question is: What can I use to protect the chrome coat without dulling the finish? On to the build notes! Helmet cast by Shawn Thorsson: I sanded this thing to 400 grit and put down a black gloss coat. I sanded it again, and put down a 2nd black gloss coat. I thought it looked good enough to chrome, and well, I thought I'd give it a go. The chrome is so pretty. Under closer inspection, however, I noticed pitting and speckles in the finish that I hadn't noticed previously. It felt so smooth! But nope. Chrome will show you how bad the surface really looks. I stopped spraying after about 20 seconds and in that time, I learned a lot... From 5 feet away, it looks fine, even in this unfinished state. The subtle weathering would also help with the finish, but I just wasn't happy with it. Part of the problem was my dusty balcony and debris got into the finish. So that's something: Cleaner work environment. The pitting of the resin, despite the sanding, was still evident. I even filled some of the more obvious pits, but still not good enough. So I sanded off the chrome to start over. Sanding off the chrome created an inverse color effect and the pitting revealed itself. I've 3D printed a bunch of helmets and I dump cans of filler primer into the projects to fill in the print lines to compliment the surface sanding, then sand the filler primer, coat again, sand, and repeat until I'm satisfied with the finish, then top coat the colored primer. So... that's where I'm at. I hit the helmet with filler primer so I can skip to a finer grit sand and will decide if I want to put on a black top coat before I revisit the chrome. I feel this will do the trick to address the pitting issue. Speaking of 3D printing, I picked up a file for Phasma's F11-D blaster and whipped it together. This is listed as optional, but I'm looking to keep myself busy before I commit to the buy in, and the blaster and helmet will hold me off for a little while. In either case, the helmet and blaster would be a nice display piece. The blaster will likely get the same 3D printing treatment: sand, filler, sand, filler, top coat, chrome. And that's where I'm going to leave my progress for this initial post! Making a WIP helps me get through the build and hopefully the feedback, encouragement, and comments will tide me over while I move forward. I'm confident I'll pick up the rest of the kit, it's just a question of "when?" I imagine the whole kit is the same process over and over. What kind of armor attachment methods are used for this costume? Does it use the TK strapping method? Is it the same as FOTKs? I've only assisted one FOTK with a series of snaps and velcro, and despite that, really have no idea. I imagine the kit will need all the attachments laid out before paint goes down. Since I don't have the armor in hand and prep will take some time, I suppose I'll cross that bridge when I get there! Thanks for following along.1 point

The TFA/TLJ CRLs are under change so I wouldn’t be too sure that will still be the case afterwards.1 point

upon inspecting the TFA and TLJ crl's, the image for the cod is the exact same image. I checked the URLs for both, and it points to the same file. So with that in mind, according to the CRL, this cod will be fine1 point

Just got the call that they're shipping my BBB. *screams at decibels only audible to dogs*1 point

Not at all just finished up and it’ll go in for review tonight so you should be wrapped up shortly. Please keep in mind that we do these in order they’re received and sometimes Darth Reallife shows up from time to time, I had a potential hurricane off the coast put me behind about a week and I’ve just about caught up. Thank you again for your patience.1 point

I mentioned having a new helmet and haven’t shown it off! Time to correct that mistake. The padded interior lining was a nice surprise. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Kevin Snow is our GML and we've been chatting about this for about as long as I've had it on pre-order. We're going to see what the shape of the cod is once cut out and make a decision from there. If I need to get a new one from KB, worse things have happened. The fact that this kit might actually be shipping his weekend is a miracle all of itself.1 point

Hi Jonathan! I'm in the same position as you, currently studying, but also part-time trooping. I was lucky to have an armor maker offer a May 4th deal with 20% off, that and a couple of extra shifts at my minijob helped me to get the funds I needed to buy the armor. Still quite a bunch of money, but I'm getting close to celebrating my 1 Year anniversary in the 501st and I have never regretted anything1 point

To be fair, BSP was supposed to deliver their kits in June 2018, and have gone through significant delays with poor communication. Glad they're finally going out, looking forward to mine!1 point

Some pics after the glue has dried. I hit the pack with a light black and cream color spray for a battle weathered touch and sprayed an enamel paint sealer. Now this is done, I gotta figure out how I’m going to attach the shoulder mag pouch to the strap. [emoji848] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

A small update on the FO Treadspeeder trooper. Armour base is First Order but with white canvas like material trousers. The shins and knees were all bench built. The boots worn by the stunt team were a style of Alpine Star motorbike boots with plates, etc stuck on top to hide the provenance. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro1 point

Oh, I did make a little progress the other day if anyone's curious. Bought some random 2" suspenders off Amazon and retrofitted them to (mostly) work to hold up the barrel. It was just me working on this, so taking pics and adjusting things was a challenge, but I might as well bring ya'll along for the ride. Random Amazon suspenders: Chopped the ends off to add snaps: My assistant is useless, but means well: Made some tabs to stick in - these are only temporary until I finalize what I'm going to do to reinforce the barrel a bit: Boom, all mocked up! In hindsight, the suspenders are way too long and I had to max em out to get the barrel sitting high enough. I'll either need to cut and shorten them, or mount them lower in the barrel. A couple of crummy test fitting shots: The side connectors are definitely too long and will need to be trimmed down a bit so I didn't attach them in the front yet. I'lll also likely be taking a little off the top of the barrel, and off the top of the cod plate to get everything to fit well. I'm about 6ft and 160lbs, so on the slim side. This kit should fit slightly bigger troopers easier than I originally thought, but I'll need to trim it down, which is intimidating. Anyways, that's it for now!1 point

Hi Chris you may be better off posting in the FOTK build threads, TFA or TLJ you'll get a lot more feedback there. Lots of great build threads to follow so I'm sure you'll be fine. looking forward to seeing some photos soon.1 point

Hey all, just poppin in for a quick update. Haven't made a ton of progress lately - unfortunately I've been having some health issues and am waiting on some scans to know how worried to be, plus it's been difficult to coordinate with our build group and I've just been busy personally (and SUPER tired all the time). Got my 50th troop with the Legion (37th FTE) in this past Friday though, so that's cool! Been a member for almost 2 years, so I'm right on track for my original goal of 2 events a month. Forums are cool, high five-ing kids is better tho haha I did start doing some test fitting and am so far very pleased with the fit of the suit and how comfortable it is compared to ANH. I also worked out the bicep issue and found the matching one in another trooper from our group order's kit. I'm still researching how to reinforce the kit before paint or final strapping, but I think I'm making this too complicated in my own head and just need to commit! haha Hopefully some progress and pics this weekend! Also, our group order from Imperial Boots is ready, so my T7s should be arriving in the coming weeks. We saved like $30 a person working with Vince! Awesome.1 point

Hey Johnathan, I'll be pretty straightforward - odds are that unless you are an experienced prop maker and very proficient with vacuum forming already, you will not be able to "construct everything". The overwhelming majority of us purchased raw, pre-formed "kits" from vetted makers, then trimmed and assembled them custom to ourselves. Quality molds/bucks are few and far between and the people who have them don't just give them out. Often, they have spent dozens, if not hundreds or thousands, of hours sculpting them. It's not something you can just make your own of or find for cheap. Please look around in here and check out some of the links to find a maker that's right for you. Your very best bet will be to do a lot of research while you save - like Michael said, $600USD is about the bare minimum for getting into an ANH-S suit, and they go up from there pending quality/options/different costumes. The good news is - you're in the right place. You've found some of the people that will be HAPPY to help guide you along this journey. But let's set some reasonable expectations right out of the gate. Please post any questions you have up in here - we'll all do our best to help. Welcome!1 point
