  1. Hi Daniel, Tony has been gracious enough to allow me the honor of approving one last Centurion application. It's a tradition in the DO's office to approve both an applicant EI and Centurion. Thank you for your application, let's get you approved shall we. CRL and Centurion Application Requirements: All required submission photos are now present. Tony Joseph and I are excited to welcome you to another successful Centurion rank. Sensational job! This is special in a couple of ways, Not only have you been approved by an exiting DO, at the same time you are approved by a replacement DO, something you just don't see every day. Other-Armor Fit/Assembly: No more to add other than , welcome to Centurion, again!!

  2. Hey guys, I got some more work done. First, the three straps on the abdomen worked out great. These straps hold the abdomen in place like a girdle. Next I cut the mounting boxes for the shoulder straps off the chest and back plates. I sanded the rough edges of the boxes and re-attached the chest boxes with PC-7 leaving space on the inside for the shoulder straps. I also cut down the collar opening about ¾” (in the center) and tapered to the corners where it meets the boxes. I also took some off the sides to match the new profile with the boxes lowered. Lastly, after removing the two shoulder boxes on the back plate I used E6000 to attach two strips of HIPS on the inside of each shoulder. Each of these pieced were heated and shaped before gluing. Next, I cut two rectangles of HIPS to fill the hole where the boxes were removed. I heated them and shaped them then glued them in place with E6000. Tonight, I hope to fill in gaps with bondo and sand all the edges on the inside of the back plate. I then plan on re-attaching the back plate boxes with PC-7. I will be gluing a piece of HIPS on the inside to close off the hole cutout on the back plate as well. Going forward, I will be test fitting the back plate and chest along with the abdomen. If all that looks good, I will work on the groin and posterior plates. Then I will address the strapping and how the shoulder bells and legs will attach. One thing that I notice was that my undersuit is all mesh on the back and this mesh is visible along my back neck line and on the sides of the back armor. I do not know if this intentional or if I am just bigger than the armor in these areas? If I need to, I can add some breathable black material to the undersuit but would like to hear from you guys before I do that. That’s the update so far. Thanks for the interest.

  3. We're getting closer to the finish line! After visiting the future colleagues at RPC this Saturday I underwent a boost of motivation once again, and so I carried out the last steps. Glued the last two parts with my E6000 and after it all dried I sprayed on another layer of primer. However, first of all I masked all the areas that I didn't want to be black after spraying (i.e. the ejector port which I already sprayed metallic silver, the scope lenses, the part of the scope with the white writing on, and finally the spring. That's the state of the blaster right before primer: And after half an hour of drying, I added a couple of layers of black spray paint. After removing the masking tape and after another 24 hours of drying, this is what my E11 looks like now: The very last step now is going to be a bit of weathering and a final layer of clear coat to protect the paint. And I also finished this project just in time as my RS Props kit and helmet are going to arrive on Wednesday. So this project might come to an end very soon, but I enjoyed it thoroughly and am also very happy with the result. I will probably finish this WIP with a couple of final pictures soon, and next weekend (at the latest) I will start my ANH TK WIP thread. Cheers, Freddy

Anthony sported a half dozen approved costumes and was passionate about his involvement with The 501st Legion. With his frequent travels, Anthony made an effort to meet other members everywhere he went. From his work with the U.S. Forest Service to his vegan life style Anthony demonstrated consideration for this World. Anthony is survived by his loving wife Carrie. Our condolences go out to his family and friends. "Buckets Off" On the 7th of May 2018 Keith Sloggett TK-76101,Keith Sloggett from Canadian Garrison passed away after a courageous battle with kidney disease. He was an amazing, generous friend to many, always putting others before himself. Cherished father of Shelby, Jenilee, Adrian, Elijah and grandfather of Savannah. Our condolences go out to his family and friends. "Buckets Off" Rumors, half-truths, and social media. There is a marketing term called FUD which stands for Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt. The intent is that if you can present partial information that creates FUD relating to your competitors products, you can then steer people to your own. In the US lately there has been the term “alternate facts” added to our lexicon recently as well. In either case, it makes it hard to find factual information. I bring this up as it’s become a more frequent concern amongst unit commanders – garrison and detachment alike – about how to deal with rumors and innuendo that start and spread via social media. In journalism, the old stand-by is to always check with the source. Walter Cronkite, a journalist trusted and famous for his integrity, was once fired from a job when he was younger because he refused to air a report without checking the facts himself. Even when JFK was assassinated, Walter did not go live with the news until he was able to verify the details with sources personally. I say this as there have been a lot of false stories circulated on social media about FISD, such as the silver coins not being real silver (they were lab tested, they are), or that there was some type of special run done only for the officers (there was not), or that there is a “secret FB group” (there is not). The lesson here is not to believe everything you read on social media. Check with the source. Can they back up their claims? Do they have any proof? Or are they just stirring the pot to further their own agenda? From the start FISD was created to provide transparent information to the membership. Initially it was to shine truth on the various makes of armor and how best to build it. L2/L3 approval threads have always been 100% open to the public (vs. being deleted as another detachment did) as we want that process to be transparent. When it doubt, always check in at FISD if you have any questions on rumors, etc. Since 2006 we’ve set the record straight, and will honor that tradition. New Executive Officer Eric @Tolo has been with FISD a long time, including stints as DCOG and most recently as DXO. As things happen, Eric's personal life has changed for a positive for him, but for us it meant that he couldn't do what he needed and stay on as DXO. Eric - Thank You! for all you've done for FISD and we wish you the best. Fortunately on FISD, we believe in staff development, e.g. taking on new people to staff roles, and then grooming them for higher office, either here on FISD or elsewhere in the Legion. Many former FISD staff have gone on to be GCO/GXOs, SLs, and DLs. Continuing in that fine tradition, Andrew @Sly11 has graciously agreed to step up in to the XO role. Many of you know him from his solid work as a Deployment Officer, which he has rocked. Please join me in congratulating Andrew for a promotion well deserved. With Unquestioned Loyalty Paul Hoeffer TK8020 “Daetrin” Detachment Leader It would be remiss of me to make my first news letter post as DXO without some heart felt thank you's, so here we go. Eric (Tolo) Thank you for your tireless service within the detachment. I have some big shoes to fill & hope I can do you proud. All the best with your promotion in the real world, and please remember we are but a few button clicks away. Tony (UKswrath) The last two years in the DO's role, have been an absolute blast. I have made a life long friend in Tony Jobe (UKswrath) and had the opportunity to meet him and most of the FISD staff face to face at last year's SW Celebration. What great memories It has been a pleasure to have worked along side you during my tenure at the DO's office, we have laughed a plenty and when you think about it, the DO role is one of the most rewarding positions to hold. Every day we had the opportunity to make another member smile and have reason to be proud of his or her own accomplishment. I feel content in the knowledge the DO's office is left in the best possible hands, and with your new recruits will continue to reinforce the high standard the detachment has come to expect. Paul (Daetrin) I am honored with this opportunity to serve as DXO. In my eyes, we are the finest detachment in the legion, and I am ready to take on the new challenge and personal growth this position will bring. Thank you for your leadership and guidance. The Membership To all those over the last couple of years, who submitted applications for Expert Infantry and Centurion review. On so many occasions Tony and I were gob smacked at the quality of armour builds. The fine points, all that attention to detail and quest for accuracy , it all made the job not only easier, but more pleasurable so a thank you is also well deserved. I shall leave you with this The FISD is a well oiled machine. Our success is a sum of all our parts, from the staff right the way through to our newest member. You all form part of that machine and in its day to day service and achievements, without every single one of you and your contributions big or small, we would not be where we are today. To the Empire With Unquestioned Loyalty Andrew Franke TK-11469 "Sly11" Executive Officer Greetings troopers! I would like to announce the addition of two new Provost Marshall’s to the command staff. Please welcome Aaron (Pyrates) and Chris (themaninthesuitcase)! You all are probably familiar with Aaron and Chris. They both have been contributing to our community for a while now. They both worked their way through the ranks from starting out as newbies to becoming part of the Attache team. Their hard work and dedication to the FISD has been extremely helpful to our members as well as the staff. Congrats Aaron and Chris! These past two months have certainly been a whirlwind around here in regards to the FISD merch. During this time, it was evident that emotions were running high and people became very passionate. I would like to commend the members who were able to communicate in a productive manner on our forums. It was certainly a tough situation for everyone involved. I would like to take this time to elaborate on an issue as it relates to my position and my responsibility this past two months. There was a growing concern that some members felt their voices weren’t being heard as the “staff” was just locking all of the threads down. I would like to tell everyone that that was not the case. The threads that were locked were done so either at the request of Legion Command or because I was trying to prevent a catastrophic situation that would not have benefited anyone. My main goal is to maintain a positive experience for every member that visits. There were times when communication was breaking down between members which in turn was causing agitation and resentment which is not something any of us want to see. There is not one member here (detachment staff included) that did not want to find an amicable way to reach a conclusion to the situation at hand. Moving forward, I would like it to be known to all of our members that if you feel you are not satisfied with a particular process, then you should feel free to contact me at any time. I would be more than willing to discuss any issues that any member may have. I would prefer to keep those types of discussions here on our forum then out in the open on social media for all of the world to see. With Unquestioned Loyalty Steve Sheades TK-10466 "starsaber25" Provost Marshall Hello all. It's been my greatest pleasure serving with Andrew (Sly11) the last couple years as FISD DOs. It would be an understatement if I said I'm going to miss not working on apps together with my comrade in arms. I believe Andrew and I were the first duo DO team on whitearmor after Steve (Gazmosis) stepped down. We hit the ground running as the flood gate of apps bombarded us and literally have been not stop since. Coupled with new armor types and CRL changes it wasn't always easy sharing duties with someone on the opposite side of the planet but despite some obstacles Andrew and I continued tirelessly through illnesses, vacations and life stuff in general, backing each other up and holding each other accountable as needed. We laughed, scratched our heads and gave each other virtual high fives during our time as DOs. We were and will always be a team. Thanks for the great times my friend. As Andrew continues to drive the FISD forward in his new capacity I want to wish him a huge congrats, a position well deserved. Troopers Helping Troopers is what the command staff strives for and Andrew is one of the finest examples of the motto. Have fun brother. At this time I'd like to welcome Joseph (justjoseph63) as the new DO replacing Andrew. Joseph is another fine example of someone that has proven themselves the last couple years. Devoted and loyal to the FISD as Attaché Ambassador his relentless pursuit to helping members reach their potential and striving for accuracy he has proven without a doubt he's a great asset to the FISD family, and I believe will be an exceptional DO. Congratulations and welcome brother. Looking forward to working with you as probably the two oldest guys in the detachment command staff lol. Old guys rule Also, it was decided to bring on a 3rd DO to help with costume reviews alongside Tony & Joseph. Shane has been doing a bang-up job on the boards and when Joseph recommended him, well how do we say no? For more information on this program, please visit the link here Re-introductions Hi everyone, There’s been quite a bit of action on the forum of late, some of which has been of a more serious nature (elections etc.). So, with that in mind, I wanted to start a light-hearted thread where we can all say “hi”, share something about ourselves and share some pics if we want, allow new members to see what long standing members are about, and generally just get some good vibes going. With May just around the corner, a busy month in the Star Wars universe, there’s no better time to remember why we all dress up as white plastic spacemen. So, if you want to say “hi” and share a picture of yourself, (perhaps your favourite pic or moment as a TK), feel free to speak up. :-) You can find the thread here With Unquestioned Loyalty Dan Branton TK-42911 "CableGuy" Imperial Attaché Wow - it looks like April was the month for Trooping filled with non-stop field reports, some phenomenal photos, and those troops that get you right in the heart strings. The Command Staff does indeed hear your requests, and for the most part we want to make them happen! Nobody was actually prepared to make that happen. Aside from that instance however, we do what we can to make you happy as members, with your experiences at/associated with the 1st Imperial Stormtrooper Detachment! One of the primary requests from the membership at large was for a more interactive presence on Facebook. We have a great Facebook Page, but that is not an interactive space. That desire was what led to Paul asking me to consider returning to the Detachment Staff. I was excited to come back but knew that Facebook is a large machine and that I would need help and so I asked Marcus Dohring @JODOKAST to be a part of this new phase of FISD's growth, and here we are, discussing the new Facebook Group. I phrase it that way, because it is live. Right now. You can go there and join, and begin asking questions etc there instead of finishing your reading here - but I encourage you to finish this first, I mean, this NL will be one of the very first official posts there after all. So, what will you find when you go there (aside from a link to this newsletter)? Sharp-eyed members may notice some hidden gems when they get there, but generally you'll find a few different spots for questions and answers. Over time, more content will be worked in to the group, dependent upon the requests we receive from you, and from observations made by us. Most of our readers are aware that there are other Star Wars Costume Clubs out there, aside from the 501st Legion. For the treacherous types, there is the Rebel Legion, and for those who are only interested in making a credit or two here or there, the Mandalorian Mercs Costume Club exists. But did you know that there is also a costume club available for those fans who are not old enough to tie their own shoes yet? It is absolutely true. If you have not heard of the Galactic Academy, here's a little bit of information about one of them who I happen to know very well - 6 year old Cadet - First Order (CFO) 2594, Kellan Waychoff. Kellan has been rocking his First Order armor for a couple of years now (and sadly those days may be numbered as he continues to grow) and he has become quite comfortable in his costume as a result. He has appeared at a handful of conventions and unofficial troops, as well as one official (non-con) event with me in that time. Early in April Dallas hosted FanExpo Dallas, and on Saturday he once again put on the armor for some good causes, serving as a Blast-A-Trooper target for about three hours to raise money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation. http://i.imgur.com/TYNw3KC.jpg http://i.imgur.com/iGm3I8F.jpg When his time there was done, he came out to the photo area and took a few photos with fans and Star Garrison members also. http://i.imgur.com/jBBRBq6.jpg http://i.imgur.com/9INKR6K.jpg The highlight of his weekend however was when Anthony Daniels saw him at the booth. They helped me achieve Centurion after all! My goal as your Ambassador is to simply continue what Joseph has worked so very hard to build. I hope to host more fun contests and look forward to working with all of you as we continue towards our goal of 1000 EIB! Keep doing what you are doing! Keep our motto true: "Troopers helping troopers!" With Unquestioned Loyalty Preston Christman TK-91488 "Pretzel" Attaché Ambassador So what exactly are EIB (Expert Infantry Badge) and Centurion levels? These programs were designed for those who choose to take their armor above and beyond the minimum requirements for basic 501st Legion approval. It gives you the chance to show a level of dedication and pride that takes your armor closer to being as "screen accurate" as possible, without as much extra work as you may realize! It also works on giving a better look to the Legion as an entity, and you can bet others will take notice of your hard work. The 501st has a list of detailed requirements for Basic approval, (level 1), EIB, (level 2) and Centurion, (level 3) which can be found here in the Costume Reference Library, (CRL) http://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:FISD_CRL Here are a few of the questions people may be wondering about: 1. "I am a (tall/short/heavy/thin) Trooper. Can I still apply? Of course! These programs are open and encouraged for all sizes of TKs, as long as the costume is correct and meets the guidelines. There are many specific build tutorials to every option, as well as a vast network of fellow TKs on the FISD to help you out and offer suggestions. 2. "How much extra will I have to pay for extra items"? The cost is actually quite reasonable, considering the few extra supplies you will need, which are listed in the requirements area. While it may run you a little more to implement these additions to your costume, they will go a long way to improving accuracy. All needed items can be found for sale on this thread: https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/16-ongoing-sales-project-orders/ While blasters are not required for basic approval, for EIB and Centurion levels they are, and may need upgrades (also listed in the CRL). 3. "I haven't even got my kit yet, is it too early to start planning"? Actually, aiming for Centurion is easiest to do right out of the box. 4. "I have my basic TK approval, can I still get in these programs"? In a word... absolutely! 5. "Are there any "perks" to this extra work and cost"? Besides knowing that you have a great looking set of armor, the 501st and FISD believes you should be deservedly recognized for your achievement(s), and allows you to wear the appropriate embroidered "rocker" badge of rank (available for a very minimum cost) on your shirt, helmet bag, etc., as well as rank decals to put on your armor bin. You will also have access to select "challenge coin" runs, receive (free) a cool certificate for your new rank, and have your title posted below your name in your FISD signature. Plus, once you reach these levels, you will have the extra knowledge to help out those who are looking to apply as well. 6. "Is it hard to apply, and what happens then"? After basic approval, all you do is make sure your armor is up to the standards set forth in the CRL, post a thread with the required photos in the appropriate area (see below), and wait a bit for the D.O.s (Deployment Officers) to address it. (Hint: Studying other people's threads before you submit can be a GREAT help). These are also listed on the main page of the FISD site. While waiting for approval, you will get some comments from others who will offer suggestions and constructive advice to help you out. If you should need any changes, the DOs will let you know, so you can adjust accordingly. Don't be dismayed if you do need changes... it's all for your benefit! After you are approved for EIB, then you can submit for Centurion. EIB https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/19-request-expert-infantryman-status/ Centurion https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/72-request-centurion-status/ Note: You will see some suggestions in the existing submissions/approval requests that, while not actually part of the CRL, are highly suggested items, (for your benefit), such as "flat-head screw heads on the TD (thermal detonator) should be painted black" for Centurion, etc. Those small details all add up to closer screen accuracy. Just remember that the FISD is here to help you every step of the way with whatever other questions you may have, but if you can't seem to find what you are looking for in your research, just post the question, (or PM justjoseph63) and best of luck on your build! As many of you are aware, the FISD is currently in our March to 1000 program. Our goal is to reach the one thousand mark of Troopers who have earned their Expert Infantry Badge, and although we are well on our way to this goal and have just passed the 800 mark! The amount of approved submissions is increasing (over 80 this year alone) thanks to the dedication of those willing to go the "extra mile" toward screen accuracy. Here is a brief description of EIB as written by Paul (Daetrin), our founder: "Expert Infantryman status is not required for members of this detachment. It should be viewed as an optional set of requirements for those who wish to take the accuracy of their costumes to the next level, and be recognized accordingly. We're a costuming club - think of it as an award for costuming excellence and you get the picture. The requirements will not replace or supersede 501st standards, but only serve as an inspiration for the level of accuracy that can be achieved. The standards are meant to be high but achievable..." Besides the added pride you will have in your armor, those reaching this level can purchase exclusive EIB gear (patches, decals, coins etc.) and get a free certificate for your accomplishment. 5. OK, future Troopers, many of you have asked about how to set snaps for your armor connections, so I thought I'd whip up a little tutorial. Please note that the example that I am making is based on using the "double snap" connection system (see last photo). I highly recommend this method, especially on the back/kidney, kidney/butt, and ab/kidney connections, as it provides an extra layer of confidence. Yes, it costs a bit more to do due to the extra snaps involved, but you can be sure that no matter what happens, you will NEVER have a piece come loose or fall off on a troop. Some builders may have used others, but after countless troops I have experienced no problems. So here we go.... Materials needed: 1. Hammer 2. Soldering (woodburning) iron. (Available at home improvement and craft stores. WELL worth the $10-$12.00 investment). NOTE: The tip of this thing gets CRAZY hot, so be very careful where you set it. Many come with multiple tips, but I suggest the pointed one. 3. Snap setting kit. (Available at all craft stores). Please note that I am showing both sides of the base... more on that later. Convex side Concave side 4. For this purpose, I am using 2 inch (5cm) wide black nylon and 1 inch (2cm) black nylon. The 1 inch strips will be attached directly to your armor. I suggest using E-6000 glue and clamps for this. 5. Snaps, of course! Don't "cheap-out" when buying these. The cheap ones come undone very easily and are garbage. For this tutorial, I am labeling the 4 parts as such: STEP ONE Cut the 2 inch strapping to about 4 inches long** (or as needed) for the particular connection. Cut the 1 inch nylon into 2 inch lengths as seen below. **NOTE: The actual length will depend on there you are using them, i.e. the kidney to posterior plate connections will be shorter. Just be sure there are no gaps, and that the 1 inch wide base pieces are in the correct position before attaching them. Example: The ends will be a bit ragged and will fray. Use the soldering tool to seal them. Again, using the soldering gun, make 4 holes in the 2 inch wide nylon as seen below. Be careful not to make them too large (just larger than the shaft of the snap base) or the snap may eventually pull out. Take one of the 1 inch wide nylon pieces and slide it up under one end of the 2 inch wide piece, even with the end. Once it is lined up, use the soldering iron to make holes in the 1 inch wide piece. This will assure that the holes for the snaps line up correctly. (VERY important)! You should end up with this: Repeat for other side, but be sure not to get the sides mixed up, as one set of holes may be farther apart. Insert one of the male bases into one of the holes in the 2 inch wide piece. Flip it over and place one of the male snaps on the post. Place the base in the concave side of the snap setting kit base. Place the striking rod in the center (straight up and down) and strike it several times firmly with the hammer. The inside shaft should be sufficiently widened to keep the top from coming off. There... your snap is set! NOTE: Do not attempt to do this step on a regular table. You need a hard surface, and a heavy duty workbench or concrete surface works best. Repeat this step for the remaining 3 holes. Now onto the 1 inch wide strips.. Insert one of the female bases into one of the holes, then (as above) place one of the female snaps on top. Place the female snap base into the convex side of the snap setting base. Again, using the striking rod, give it a few good whacks. (Getting the hang of this now)? This is what you should have at this point (only one end shown) CONGRATULATIONS, you have one strap completed! Now that you realize how easy this is and have it down to a science, repeat as necessary. NOTES 1. For added security, the double snap system can be applied to other areas as well, including shoulder bridge attachments and bicep to shoulder bridge, (example below) This is especially good for those who wear packs (HWT, Sandie, Spacetrooper). 2. Snaps set in elastic (as seen above) can pull out over time with repeated use. For added strength I recommend doubling the elastic over before attaching the snaps. 3. Be sure to use the female base on all the straps that will be glued to your armor. The reason being is that the bottoms are flat, insuring a tight seal. 4. Some folks set the female snaps in ABS instead of nylon when gluing them to the armor. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, it's just a different way of accomplishing the same goal. The reason I use nylon is that I find it conforms to the curved parts of the armor better, and gives a larger surface area for the glue to adhere to. 5. Some use CA (super) glue to attach the 1 inch nylon to their armor. I have found that it can get brittle and break off or even cause warping on ABS due to the heat it puts off while drying. E-6000 needs to be clamped and takes more time, but trust me, it's worth the wait. 6. When gluing the 1 inch nylon to your armor, do NOT keep the 2 inch wide nylon attached with the snaps. Some of the glue may seep through the hole in the snap and glue the whole connection together. Not a good thing. If you should have any questions, just ask here or PM me, and best of luck on your build! Photo 1 (Double snap system.. note clamps). SHOUT OUTS: Gary jr. ( @flashpoint0214 ) The guy who introduced me to the double snap system! Jeremy (Copper) who supplied the nice clean photo of the double snap system.

  6. Hello, I am currently learning myself Fusion 360 & 3D printing. I am choosing to model my E-11 blaster to understand how Fusion 360 works. My future plan is to have all the component modelled in 3D files and 3D print it. I am sharing the files for my fellow troopers. My reference thread as below: 1. FISD E-11 BLASTER REFERENCE 2. E-11 PVC Pipe Build Templates (Imperial and Metric) 3. TrainWrecks 3D printed E-11 and T-21 parts. Parts: 1. Power Cylinder (3D printing: Shapeways/ STL: Thingiverse) 2. Main body (in progress) 3. Front cap (3D printing: Shapeways/ STL: Thingiverse) 4. Bayonet lug (3D printing: Shapeways/ STL: Thingiverse) 5. Rear sight (3D printing: Shapeways/ STL: Thingiverse) 6. Others? Soon.... Note: 1. Accuracy: I am targeting for 70% accuracy for the shape and dimension. I am new to this 3D design/printing. Apology for any inaccuracies. 2. For ordering with Shapeways, I put in $0.00 markup. The price you pay 100% go to Shapeways for making the model. 3. I uploaded the STL files in Thingiverse . You can download it and print with your own 3D printer.

  9. I forgot to mention, I made a little modification to my clamps. I cut small strips of wood and hot glued them to the end of my spring clamps. This way the clamp pushes down on the cover strip with less chance of pressing on the sides of the armor. The was especially useful for the forearms where the large surface area of the clamp would have hit the sides and not clamped down as well. And now on to the thermal detonator.... This is the untrimmed TD from AP.... And here is after the initial trim... As other people have mentioned, the end caps are a very tight fit. I tried sanding down the main tube a little but that didn't really work. The material that the pipe is made of doesn't really take well to sanding. I found it almost "soft" and difficult to sand. Maybe that's just one of the properties of pipe? It wasn't "hard" and wouldn't sand "smooth" after a course sanding. Luckily I only did less than 1 cm from the edge of one end before giving up on the idea. It turns out the caps DID fit OK, it's just a tight fit and any angle at all will cause them to not slide onto the pipe. After a test fit I found the pipe a little long. My understanding is that the entire TD should be 7.25 to 7.50 inches long with the end caps installed. So I needed to chop a little off the pipe. Luckily (again) my dad's old tools come into play. He had this interesting mitre-box style contraption that holds the saw blade level. Perfect for chopping down the pipe. I followed Ukswrath's build for masking off the areas that will be glued before painting. Then I did the final sanding of the end caps and panel to get everything the right size. As I mentioned in my E11 build....I picked up a (fairly) cheap airbrush off of Amazon. One that hooks up to a tool compressor with a pressure reducing valve. It was only my second time using it but after some tweaking with adjustment screws, I managed to get a reasonably nice flow. Much better than the first time I tried. I was getting a lot of "spitting" of larger drops previously. This time after adjusting the needle I wasn't getting that anymore. This air brush stuff is a lot more complicated than it seems. WAY too many adjustment screws with pretty much no instructions. :-) I thinned down some Humbrol #5 Dark Admiralty Grey Gloss and sprayed on a few light coats. Next I glued on the panel... Then I glued on the end caps. I purchased the TD Clips from Ukswrath. I opted for his "version 2" clips. I posted this on my local garrison and PandaTrooper pointed out that the clips look a bit tall. I hadn't noticed that but now that he mentioned it, they do look a bit tall. The "version 1" clips actually aren't as tall, but they also don't have the bend at the bottom for the belt. I'm not sure what I'll do. For now I'll assemble the rest of the armor and see how I feel about the clips. I may end up replacing them if they still appear too tall once everything is complete. Mark

  10. Still waiting to hear back on basic approval, but I just submitted last Tuesday and I know it can take some time. Trying to be patient! Meanwhile, my E11 from QuestDesign arrived and it's amazing! I went ahead and added a spring to the action just to give it another level of realism. Still trying to decide on whether or not to weather it. I also received my Aker amp and mic and have been testing out the Troopertalk app. Last, I received my helmet padding. Still working on figuring out the best configuration. I have been working on my back/kidney gap and plan to hopefully post updated pictures to my pre-approval review thread tonight!

  14. Thanks for the hand guard info. There seem to be a lot of different sizes of guards. The ABS ones that came with my armor are quite big. The silicon ones I bought from JustJoseph are smaller. I guess I'll wait and see. I may have placed mine a little further back. Just a hair before the knuckles when you make a fist, so I don't have any overhang. I'll see how it looks when everything comes together. I can always move them if I have to. Back to the forearms.... The first hot water bath definitely helped, but while gluing on the cover strips I noticed the two halves of the forearm actually don't fit together that well. I let the outer cover strip dry for 24 hours but as I started to remove the camps, I could see the cover strip start to lift. I put the clamp back on and gave it another TWO DAYS drying, then it held. I've come to the conclusion that there is a lot of "pressure" on the forearms for them to spring apart. The plastic is really being forced into shape by the cover strips. I decided on another hot water bath. I figured I could reshape the elbow area to make it better fit my arm and at the same time, maybe the hot water bath would "relax" the ABS a bit and relieve some of the pressure on the cover strips. This time I was a lot less afraid about the hot water. For me, 45 seconds works fairly well. And I have the sink already filled with cold water to harden the ABS again. Success. Also, I read that someone had issues with a cover strip coming off in the hot water. That didn't happen to me, but the forearms had dried for many days before I submerged them. The biceps were much easier.... And with that, the forearms and biceps are assembled. No strapping yet. Mark

  15. So much to post and so little time. I've been plugging along with strapping and plan to provide details of all of that soon. In the meantime however I have a troop next weekend that I'm cramming to finish this by so you only get a couple of teaser photos from my test fitting earlier today. Upper half is mostly done and I'm working on the bottom half now. The little Yoke discrepancy has already been corrected. See you folks on the other side!

  16. I know you're going for realism, but any thoughts about simply taking the floorplate release button from a rifle magazine (not necessarily a sterling, but something close to the right shape) and using that? It would even be correctly functional as well (since I'm sure the green stuff housing would be strong enough for any spring-loaded resistance). I feel silly posting a suggestion like that in a thread with so much attention to detail and quality work. I look forward to seeing everything all finished up.

  18. I'm feeling the love! It's been a pleasure serving you. (most of you) I've had lots of emails from members in support of me. People are just too afraid to get involved. I can't say I blame them; The new sheriff shoots first. It also looks like the deputies are in charge of this one and are calling the shots for him. I also want to mention Mrs.tk4205. I lost count of the sandwiches she has made for troopers at events. Cookies too. The old timers can tell you about bantha patties. The Mrs. took food to almost every major event our garrison did for many years. Few people know that these days, as so many of our old-timers have been ousted. I myself have only trooped once or twice a year for the last couple of years due to the unwelcome feeling we get from our CO and his little group of noobs. We'll see what happens this year, but there is always next year to look foreword to. I'm not going to let a few egomaniacs turn me off of what I love. I've been through a few bad commanders in my years and I always seem to outlast them. I've gone up against worse too. You guys are worth fighting the good fight for.

  20. Trimming Ears, we all know it is a struggle and I may have only messed up on the left one time and the right two times, but I was lucky enough that in my WTF kit I was supplied with three ear pieces. I decided I would try for the really close fit but if I didn't get it no big deal as gaps are screen accurate. I will skip the messed up ear documentation and follow what worked for me With my left ear I trimmed it out, and lined it up on the bucket. Than I took my dremel with the sanding drum and sanded/carved out where the tube vent is to get a general shape Getting closer Sanding the ears down really is a task of what you do in the front can change how it sits in the back. I would hold the ear in place where the top two screws would go and see where I had my large gap and needed to come down. Sometimes I needed to sand more in the back to bring the front down and other times I needed to take more off the bottom and top to bring the middle closer to the bucket. Left Ear Right Ear Straight on My left ear I ended up moving back as I felt it was a bit too far forward (pic to be updated soon) I think I am going to sand a bit more of the front of the left ear to match the gap of the right ear a bit. I think the gaps will give it a bit more uniquness to the build as not everyone will have the same gap. "This is my gap, there are many like it but this one is mine. My gap is my best friend. It is my life"
