  2. Hi all, because I was building in between bush fires and a deadline of 5 weeks I didn’t take any photos but I am happy to say it was a breeze and I was all approved a few days before TROS. Now that it’s all over there are several mods I want to do to make the kit more screen accurate. I followed many build threads and had help from Darren, Glen and Jade from the MEPD so he won’t see this. A few things with the fibreglass kits to note, they do need support in the yolk across the shoulders, a good sand and wash is required prior to any undercoat, it’s vital to roughen up edges prior to applying any glue and be prepare for touch ups after each troop. I have a few photos to post up of things that I did to make the kit a little easier to fit. More to come soon. ' I’m on right of photo.

  4. OP (MV) Post #7 Hey there all you popcorn lovers! Grab a bucket—this is going to be a lengthy (or perhaps simply photo-filled) update! I've been busy putting together my Reference Guide folder, with formatted copies the 501st CRL, [just]Joseph's quick reference guide (PRINTABLE), @Billhag's excellent diagrams, Cricket's magnetic shin closures, the GA Garrison's Handler Training Guide, and several other documents. More will be added as my research continues, and it won't be long before I outgrow my current binder! As for the continuing receipt of items for my build, I was excited to hear that my ImperialBoots 421 boots order from the December wave has already shipped and is anticipated to arrive tomorrow. That's far earlier than I expected, and it means I'll have another pre-Christmas MBB day! I also received some mounting hardware the shiny flexible hand guards from Joseph, and boy do they blow away at least some of the competition. Add me to the list to builders who initially ordered some from TB only to find theirs to be thin and dull—generally not matching the color, shine, and lines of TK armor. Below are some comparison photos, and keep in mind that I did not correct the white balance on these phone images, so they appear more tan in color than they actually are. TB on the LEFT (or first), Joseph's on the RIGHT (or second) Observations of these two sets of guards: Those from TB are of even thickness throughout, and have overly crisp lines which will not match TK armor. Their color is also slightly off-white (not enough to be intentionally for a Sandy), the finishing is dull, and some molding lines are visible. On the contrary, those from Joseph are very white, have shiny finishing to match TK armor, and have no visible molding lines. Joseph's are also quite a bit thicker, featuring a tapered design with the greatest thickness at the the base of the fingers. See the last photo above to compare the thickness of the two guards at that same point. I suppose my pair from TB will now serve as a backup on troop days, but boy do I wish I had found Joseph's sale thread before purchasing the more expensive ones. I thought I'd also take a moment to mention my method of posting photos, since this build thread will feature quite a few of them in the coming months. I have already been a Flickr user for many years, so I decided to utilize their services for photo hosting, as opposed to Imgur, which seems to be the most popular service here on FISD. However, instead of using the normal image sharing links provided by Flickr (or Imgur for that matter), I found a back-door method to link to the original high-resolution images hosted on the Flickr servers (AWS). This means that the FISD DOs or other users can click on my embedded thread photos, and instead of being redirected to an actual Flickr page or album, the full-resolution image opens immediately in the browser. This will hopefully make it easier for the DOs and other users to zoom in on the tiny details and provide accurate feedback. Also worth noting is that Flickr was recently acquired by Smugmug and the storage capacities for free users have already been decreased (similar to the Photobucket debacle), so I'm hoping that no further action will occur in the future, and that my galleries will remain intact. Then again, the Flickr CEOs letter to users could be interpreted in a less positive light... As I've continued to wait on my TK items I've also been further exploring scratch-builds of several larger blasters such as the DLT-19 and T-21. I think I've come down with BFG syndrome. In fact, I just received this pair of "Build Your Own Blaster" bases which I found on eBay for $30 shipped, and I'm considering trying two variations of a DLT-19 build based on Astyanax's and HappyTrooper's builds. Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself. First I need Trooper status. So now back to popcorn. Literally. This weekend was the Episode IX premiere, and obviously I had a ticket to go with the guys. Below is a photo of my opening night (Thursday) ticket, taken yesterday (Saturday). Notice anything odd? Some of you will remember that I have an almost nine-month old baby girl, and this was also the last week of the semester for my wife who teaches kindergarten, so let's just say that a MASSIVE sleep regression coupled with an immeasurably difficult week and semester meant I needed to be home to support my family. I joined the guys at our traditional pre-premier Chinese buffet, right next to the theater I might add, then went straight home. This was a new experience for me—not participating in the opening night festivities—but throughout the day (before my plans had changed) I had a little fun at work. My Rogue One Black Series helmet was a gift from my wife, and the first stormtrooper helmet I ever wore, so it holds a special place in my heart and served as a catalyst on this 501st journey. I'm looking forward to seeing what a completed ANH stunt bucket looks like next to this one! And while we're on the topic of gifts, for Christmas this year my nephew asked for the Jar Jar figure shown below, which I was slightly embarrassed to purchase for him. Then again, he is only seven years old, so I'll give him a pass, at least until I can properly indoctrinate him. Final thoughts. My build is becoming more and more real with every component package which is dropped on my porch. This immersion into TK armor has also really opened my eyes to details I previously missed when screening the OT. When recently watching ANH and ESB I was shocked at all the dropped biceps and taped armor! (Also what was up with the bubble wrap strips on the should straps of the Rogue Group snowspeeders on Hoth?!). I'm looking forward to continuing this process, and intend to continue to document my progress with lots of supporting photos and questions—pre-cut and pre-adhesion. Next up, photos of my 421 boots when they arrive. MV

  5. Hello Everyone! As I mentioned in another thread, I pulled the trigger a couple months ago on a complete AP ANH Hero build from Mark. I’ve purchased and received everything except the armor, which I am impatiently waiting on! :::Taps boot::: I thought I’d go ahead and start my thread, I’m hoping my beer gut doesn’t require too many alterations to reach Centurion but we’ll see. Below is my list and I will post pictures as I can. I do want to thank everyone who’s contributed to the newbie threads, especially those giving advice on where to go (and not to go). I feel like I did my due diligence as a result. Armor – Authentic Props (Coming Soon) Helmet – Authentic Props (Coming Soon) Belt and Thermal Detonator – Authentic Props (Coming Soon) Holster – Authentic Props (Coming Soon) Gloves – Authentic Props (Coming Soon) E-11 Blaster – Quest Design Canada Boots – Imperial Boots Neck Seal – Trooper Bay Under Suit (2 piece) – Lavento Compression Top and Athlio Compression Bottoms – Amazon Helmet Fans – Henry’s Dual Fan Cooling Kit – Trooper Bay Communication Equipment – iComm Unit and Aker 10 Watt Amplifier – TK Products Empire Cap (for when the lid is off) – Amazon The accessories are exciting and all but receiving the blaster really started bringing home that I was actually going to "be" a Stormtrooper. Definite shout out to Brett for this beauty. I found a reticle on the net and printed it out as a temporary addition, I’ll see down the road if I want to do anything more daring. (Does this count as my first alteration!?!)

  8. Welcome to the FISD, Dixon! First, congrats on your TM armor purchase.. you are going to be more than happy with it I promise. While you anxiously await BBB day, I recommend getting all of the supplies you will need in place. Also, I would definitely look over some of the existing build threads. This will give you an idea of what you've got yourself into, lol. As Tino mentioned, I always suggest starting your own build thread. That way, you can ask all the questions you want to (the more the better) as well as post lots (and lots) of photos during your build. Photos are especially important if you run into an issue.. they really are worth a thousand words. I have some tutorials under my avatar below that may help, but always feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here for ya'!

  9. Confirmed as R1. Here’s the scoop... “Production cast out a R1 classic helmet exactly as they were in film - incl. separate pieces - then created a jacket mould to make one piece fiberglass helmets for set dressing.” Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

  12. Congratulations on this Stormtrooper kit, Dixon. In my opinion, the best one you can get. Good choice. Don't worry about being skinny, indeed that is an advantage if you aim to look screen-accurate when wearing your OT TK armor. Feel free to start a build thread once you received your BBB (big brown box) and we will help you with your build. In the meantime, ask any question you have.

  13. Regular (enlisted) Stormtroopers rarely wear any type of overt outward insignia, and are said to use the identification scanners built into their buckets to determine rank and seniority of other TKs. Yes, only the Sandies in ANH wore pauldrons. They are worn by TKs in SW Rebels and FOTKs (and of course HWTs ), but some folks get a little carried away, lol.

  14. I'm starting to lean towards the Black series style theory, as the angle at the end of the brow "U" gasket rubber looks to be very similar as opposed to the straight cut ends seen on the original trilogy buckets.

  15. Definitely looks like R1 to me. Heck, wouldn't be surprised if those were Black Series helmets. As for continuity, I think the “idea” is that there was ever only one TK armor. Even though we know better.

  18. My $0.5. I trooped with resin cast, 3D-printed, rubber. They all have their pro and cons. A resin cast (like a Doopydoos, which is popular within our circle) and a 3D-printed one has a higher accuracy look, if you have the skills and willing to put the extra time in to work on them, but they are quite venerable in trooping event, especially when there is a lot guests/kids would like to handle them during photo ops. A high density rubber E-11 on the other hand may have less details on it, but it can take a lot of abuse. Recently a lot of makers produce very high quality HD rubber ones with high details on them (I personally prefer a rubber E-11). But at the end it really comes down to your trooping pattern and personal preferences, on which best suits your needs.

  20. Extremely disappointing, I thought/hoped they would have actually made this final deadline, they are definitely dead to a lot of folk now, who knows how long they'll still be around for, I suppose just to supply Disney. You only have the backing of costumers if you can actually deliver costumes in a timely manner.

  31. Looking sharp, Dave! Amazing work on this armor, sir, and you are SO close to living the white armor dream! Great to see that you have the top of your ABS belt positioned right, but (and don't hate me) I noticed that your brow is riding quite high and I think I know why. If you look at the eye position in the second photo, the front is facing down and sits low in comparison to the ridge on the cap. It seems that you positioned the bottom of the face plate a little too far in, giving the side profiles a horseshoe shape and causing the eyes to look downward. (It does give it a cool menacing look, though)! Not to add to your workload, but I would seriously consider bringing the jaw (tube) out a bit and/or raising the top of the face plate, as this may affect approval. It should be pretty straightforward for a quick afternoon project, as there is no glue involved... just the re-positioning of hardware. Note how the eye tops in the reference images below closely line up with the ridge on the sides of the cap and how the angle juts out in the front. Looks like you are headed for Centurion, sir, and judging by your mad build skills so far this should be a piece of cake! Like the Home Depot motto: "You can do it, we can help".
