Hello there! Longtime trooper, first-time poster. TK-1984 reporting. Thought I'd share my experiences with an aging set of armor losing its white luster. It started happening a few years ago. It is still in decent shape and not worthy of trashing, so I started retrobriting it. I used the sun and #40 salon creme used in hair salons which is hydroden peroxide in cream form. I applied the cream using at first a paint brush, but the peroxide would cause the brush to shed its bristles on the armor, so now I'm using a foam brush. Gloves are strongly recommended since this stuff will chemically burn your skin if it's left on for any period of time. I keep a running garden hose nearby and promptly wash off any HP that gets on me if I'm not using gloves. Decals and other non-plastics on my helmet don't seem to be affected by the HP, but I can't say this for all decals and non-plastics, so be cautious! A generous coating of the cream and placing it in a clear storage bin in the sun for a day or two does the trick for me. Others have said to wrap items in plastic to keep the cream from drying out, but I'm afraid this would cause streaking, plus it seems to be a waste of plastic wrap. I used the bin's lid as a floor and secure it to the bin itself. Nothing comes into contact with the armor, and while it's not airtight, it does retain mosture somewhat as long as the lid is secured to the bin. I've even done this on cloudy days. It is a slower process but some UV rays penetrate clouds. Still, I try to plan ahead for a sunny day in the spring through fall when the sun's rays are the strongest. When done, I use running water from a garden hose and a sponge to wash off the HP. This gives an added benefit of washing the armor. When dry, a microfiber cloth polishes it to a nice shine. I attached an image of brited and non-brited armor for comparison, and my bucket getting the treatment. Unfortunately, this is not a permanent solution for my plastic. After a few months, the grey and eventually the yellow creeps back. Time for another round of retrobriting. Some say a permanent solution is spray painting it. I'm afraid that I'll chip off some paint after each troop. Anyone have experience with painted armor and how the paint holds up? Some say that repeated retrobriting will weaken the plastic, but I don't think so because the HP doesn't penetrate the plastic; only staying on the surface. Brittle plastic comes with age and type of plastic. Others say it's time to go sandy, but I like being shiny!4 points

Lots happening again here at FISD HQ with merch runs, competition winners and CRL work continuing. Personally i have been investing my time in building the new CRL's mentioned in last months addition. One of them is currently with the LMO office awaiting feedback for any small changes then hopefully green lit so we can officially add it to the FISD costume roster. As to our newest costume, Imperial Commando or imperial super commando, there are more vendors coming on line with various parts. Looks like 850 Armor works will be the first to have ABS armor kits available, and we are looking forward to seeing their test kit assembled and complete so we can review it. Sheev's Emporium is reworking their under/jump suit with the extra detail garnered from the recent Disney Gallery show release, and one of the 3D vendors has just announced he has the Riot shield files now available for purchase so the accessory list is growing. I will be updating the vendors list in the coming week as I am waiting for some more info from these vendors. Watch this space. You can find more information on the programs here. For those unaware it is possible to achieve extra awards at Expert Infantry for each additional version costume you have approved, additional awards are not issued with another Expert Infantry number (you are only issued 1 Expert Infantry number) but you will see a star above the award on your profile and the thread title will show [APPROVED] 2nd, [APPROVED] 3rd, [APPROVED] 4th and so on. Multiple EIB award recipients and info here NOTE If you are approved with a "2nd Version" of a particular costume that you are already approved with you do not receive an additional award, there is only 1 award issued for each costume version ie: only 1 x Hero, 1 x Stunt, 1 x HWT, 1 x ESB, 1 x TFA and so on. If you have a second/additional version costume approved you will see "2nd Version" and [APPROVED] added to the thread title, no additional profile stars (more info on profile awards here) For those of you who have a particular issue (or issues) before or after submitting for Expert Infantry / Centurion level approval, in order to get you an answer faster you can now privately contact the entire Deployment Officer team at one time! Hi Alex , and thank you for your EIB application! CRL and EIB Application Requirements: All required photos have been submitted, and on behalf of the entire D.O. staff we are pleased to welcome you to the rank of Expert Infantry. Congratulations! Other-Armor Fit/Assembly; In this area we review observations made by your fellow troopers and the DO team. Some observations may lead to suggestions to improve the overall look of your armor, and please keep in mind that we consider both text (CRL) and pictures (screen caps/reference images) when reviewing submissions. Starting from top, as the crl states, Ideally, placement of ears (and screws) should closely follow the rear angle of the trap above them . This is suggested for more accuracy if it's possible for you top make it without damaging the helmet. Reference Images Fall of tube stripe tops ideally lean toward the front. This is a common detail we see in the reviews that we suggest the change for more accuracy. Reference Images Looking closely to your ab/kidney connection front view, there's a noticeable a gap that perhaps could be fixed with a strapping adjustment. Reference Images This one looks like a dressing issue. Next time you put on your Thermal Det. be sure that someone place it a little down matching the canvas belt. Reference Images *************************************************** Centurion Requirements: In this section we prepare you for our highest tier of approval. Because Centurion photos must show more detail than EIB, items pertaining to Level 3 might be seen there and not here and additional photos may be required. We try to point out all that we can from what we are able to clearly see, but the final accuracy is the responsibility of the trooper. CRL L3: There should be a minimal gap between the shoulder armor and the chest/back plates. shortening the shoulder strap and a bit could reduce the gap. Another trick here is to remove the Shoulder Bell's return edge to allow them to sit close the chest armor. Reference Images CRL L3: The plastic shoulder straps need to be held down in the back via a white elastic band to the white fabric that connects/bridges the chest and back piece. Your shoulder straps are slightly raised. This can be corrected by adding the white elastic required. Reference Images CRL L3: Ideally there no gap between the abdomen and kidney armor. Abdominal and Kidney Plate align horizontally at top You have almost no gap between AB and kidney but in order to get them aligned on top there's a little return edge that you will need to trim or fold over with a hot water bath or very carefully with a heat gun. Reference Images It could be my eyes but it looks like your small Ab buttons panel has a little return edge around. A little trimming would be necessary to make it flat and smaller so the ab raised ridge can be seeing Reference Images CRL L3: Drop boxes are vertically aligned with the end of the ammo belt with minimal gap between belt and box. Yours are just a bit too far in. Most Troopers use to add a bit of glue to the drop box elastic to keep them in place Reference Images CRL L3 : Lower thigh ridge joins (front and rear) shall butt-up flush against each other. Any gaps must be backed with ABS or filled as not to be noticeable. A commonly suggested solution is gluing a small piece of ABS plastic behind and filling the front with ABS paste. Reference Images That's all Trooper, congratulations!!!!! Just a few fixes and you'll be ready for the next level, CENTURION. We are confident that we'll see your L3 application soon.2 points

First and foremost... There is no one 'best' armor. There is a 'best' armor for *you* depending on a few factors: 1) Your budget 2) What your body size is (yes, different armors lend themselves for different body types) * 3) How experienced are you at building armor 4) It's not the kit, it's how it's fitted to the wearer that counts * While FISD does not endorse any particular armor maker, below are sellers who have proven themselves time and again in terms of customer service, honesty, and quality. All makes below can be made to be both 501st and FISD acceptable. MATERIALS Armor is made from either HIPS or ABS. HIPS --- Pros: generally less expensive, easier to trim. --- Cons: needs painting or serious polishing to look shiny. Most HIPS will not be as durable as ABS or take the stress of ABS --- Suitability: will hold up fine for regular trooping ABS --- Pros: no need to paint, high durability --- Cons: may lack the detail of HIPS, usually harder to trim --- Suitability: will hold up fine for regular trooping plus take a lot of abuse OTHER TERMS Untrimmed: means the kit comes untrimmed and you'll have to trim the parts before starting assembly. Trimmed: parts are pre-trimmed and you can start assembling right away ANH Derived: traces back to a screen used helmet. Armor came from an incomplete ROTJ suit that was supplemented with parts from a tour suit, with this base being modified to be more ANH accurate in detailing. Parts will need to be butt joined with a finishing strip glued on top. * ON SIZING ANH Derived armor (TE2, AP) was sculpted for a typical UK actor circa 1976, e.g. 5'10" and 165lbs. While good for smaller body types, it has been successfully made to fit people as large as 6'4" 235lbs though requires a bit of shimming to pull this off. 1. If you are taller or larger in frame/girth, you may want to consider AM, RT, or TM armor makes for easier fitting. 2. If you are shorter, while ANH derived armor may lend itself to your size, even FX armor has been made to fit and look good on people as small as 5'6" and 115lbs (and smaller!). 3. RT has upsized his helmet by 4-5% which makes it equivalent to the size of the old FX but is more accurate in appearance. So, while it's true that every kit has a certain ideal body type, every make has been made to fit every body type and still look good. WHO TO AVOID 1. Be aware that this site - http://www.stormtroo...s.com/home.html - is not considered commercially available. It is run by a person selling recast parts, and at a healthy premium over what you can buy direct from vetted sources. You've been warned... 2. Do not buy from e-bay - kits are over-priced, the quality is often dubious, and always recast. 3. Also see this thread: https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/topic/19329-where-what-and-whom-to-avoid-when-buying/ COMMISSION BUILDS Please be aware before purchasing a "commission build" (assembled by any of our vetted sellers listed below) or a completed costume sold by reputable members, does not mean an automatic pass at our higher levels of approval. As with all costumes, the armor will be under the same level of scrutiny as one you assemble yourself. It must fit well and follow correctly the requirements as set out in the current CRL. Please also bare in mind, you could be requested to make modifications and corrections when applying for Expert Infantry and Centurion levels where additional reference materials are used over and above what is written in said CRL's. Some example are sniper plate positioning, rivet placement and the finer details scrutinized at Centurion. VETTED MAKERS While there are many other sources for armor, the list below only contains those who have proven track records of honest business dealings, quality craftsmanship, and that are free from recast debates. You are certainly free to buy where you will, but if you vary this list we strongly encourage that you at least do your due diligence inquiring about the seller's quality and reputation before parting with your money. === ANH DERIVED ARMOR === Type: ATA (Affordable Trooper Armor) Sadly Unavailable until further notice Country: USA Contact: Kit: ABS (HIPS by request), untrimmed, ANH derived Availability Assembly: Armor needs to be trimmed, parts butt joined with finishing strips, HIPS needs to be painted. Comes with your choice of Smoked gray bubble lenses or flat dark green lenses. This is most comparable to AP with some slight changes. Availability: 3-4 months for delivery and sometimes sooner than that. Assembly: Seams are overlapping joints making it a reasonably easy build, though one can use finishing strips instead. Comments: The armor is ABS, not bright white and glossy like FX. Due to material thickness lines are a little softer than some other makers. Should shine well with Mr Sheen. NOTE: available in black too! Type: WTF (Walt) Country: USA Contact: Walt on FISD Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/612005498911674/user/1145629985/ Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/612005498911674 Kit: ABS, untrimmed, ANH derived Availability Current wait times are 6-8 weeks. Assembly: Armor needs to be trimmed, parts butt joined with finishing strips. Comments: No issues with quality or service reported to date. === ANH FAN SCULPT === Type: RT-Mod (RT) / RT-Panda Country: Canada Contact: [email protected] Kit: ABS, close trimmed, fan sculpt. Updated bucks for the majority of the armor and helmet in 2018 to meet Centurion level standards (separate ab button plate, kidney notches, etc). Availability: Currently about 8 month wait. Assembly: Parts are "close trimmed" (a thicker return edge is left on all parts for those seeking more accuracy for strapping brackets etc. Final trimming is far less work than "untrimmed off the buck" armor. Designed to be easy to put together (regarded as one of the easiest kits to assemble as all "halves of lumbs etc. line up to one another without problems). Designed for butt joined limbs with a formed ridge with cover strips. Some parts can be formed without ridges present. Helmet comes as a kit as of 2019. Options: ANH stunt, ESB hand armor Comments: Designed especially for taller/larger body types and has more capacity to fit these troopers (without shims) than most makes of armor. There are 2 sizes of back armor, 3 sizes of thighs, 2 sizes of shins / calves, and the ab / kidney will accommodate approx 40" waist without shims. The thighs are wider and can accomodate a wide range of sizes. Female troopers often order thighs / shins to accommodate wider hips etc. The armor and helmet are sculpted at 4% larger than an original kit. The difference is subtle but makes fitting/sizing much easier for taller/larger troopers (has been worn very easily by troopers from 6' to 6'5"). Type: AM (Armor Master) - Dave’s Darkside Depot Country: USA Contact: [email protected] or https://www.facebook.com/Daves-Darkside-Depot-1188080927989611 Kit: ABS. All body armor components including face piece and ear pieces are .090 ABS. The one piece dome/back is formed using .125 ABS, as this piece is formed over a rather deep mold and anything thinner can cause thin regions which can eventually crack or fracture. White .060 ABS blanks included to cut as cover-strips. TD clips, rubber gloves and black Nomex flight gloves, flexible hand guards and all Centurion level hardware included. Availability: Normally 4-6 weeks or less. Assembly: Comes trimmed out of the box, but you will still be required to adjust for proper fit to your body size. Good choice for large troopers, but can be cut down. Can be ordered completely pre-assembled for an additional fee. Comments: Chest and back molds have been updated to address past concerns, and are now acceptable to Centurion level. They are now including a custom, die-cut Imperial cog themed helmet liner for the helmets, mounting Velcro included. Hovi tips are professionally cast aluminum. Hero helmets are now available. Comments: The armor can be made to be FISD EI acceptable for about $50 and an afternoon of work. The helmet is not acceptable by any Detachment's program, and many GML's are no longer allowing it to be accepted at the Legion level. Type: Older/Original AM (1.0) NE Country: USA Contact: [email protected] Kit: .090 gauge ABS - trimmed - Fan sculpt Availability: N/A Assembly: Butt joining required for the legs. Arms can be overlapped but trimming those overlaps off and butt joining is recommended. Comes trimmed out of the box, but you will still be required to trim for proper fit to your body size. Comes in full or "lite" kits. Lite kits come without helmet, ABS cement or polish.1 point

I went with RS, I've only had great experiences with them and their customer service is amazing. They produce the only armor out there with direct lineage to ANH if that is something you're into! Troopermaster have taken measurements from the same ANH armor so he produces a great kit too! Some key people at RS are on vacation for a week starting tomorrow 2023-07-10 FYI, but RS and TM are the only makers I have personal/second hand experience with and they're all great kits!1 point

Yeah, the rivets are for permanent attachments instead of snaps or glue or velcro. Not sure how canon they are, but they do the job well. At least I used white rivets!1 point

Or Disney actually make him a live action character and then we go with what is seen on screen. We are still not 100% on what the boots look like, whether they have plates like Pharma's, or are just red FOTK boots.1 point

Yes. This is a great choice, you won’t be disappointed. Being the most iconic variant of the bunch, it makes it a bit easier to find good references for I found. I went with Authentic Props. I did this for a couple of reasons. I am a bit of a “Husky trooper”, so Mark’s kit allows for a bigger mid section. With your height, I would double check to make sure it will work for you. The other huge factor is that he is in Quebec, so shipping was very simple for me living in southern Ontario.1 point

Welcome to FISD Paolo, you are in for some great adventures joining both the Detachment and the 501st. You are certainly in the right place to learn about Stormtroopers and we are all here to support you on this new journey.1 point

APOLOGIES ABOUT THE MULTI-POST SPAM I’M STILL FIGURING OUT HOW THREADS HERE WORK Thank you all so much for your support and guidance! I feel overwhelmingly affirmed and assured knowing you folks, and the community, are (is) this supportive! After some debate and research I'm thinking of ambitiously going in the direction of a standard ANH stunt-variant armour; a genuine classic we all grew up with, seems to be the most icon choice. I know it will be abit of work (and I'll tag all the replies to my thread) but do you feel this is a good choice (both in terms of being the most iconic/ popular choice and recognizable iteration of a "StarWars Stormtrooper")? I'm absolutely going to be taking everyone's suggestion to go with one of our vetted makers, I'm wondering if you yourself had a preference of who to go with based off of your experience? Price at this point in time is not a huge concern as l'm moreso getting quotes, and going for quality of costume. I'm a big collector and I'm hoping to make this suit everything baby Paolo has dreamt of! Thank you all again for your time and support, I know this is strictly voluntary and I appreciate this wholeheartedly. Signing off for now, P1 point

That's definitely an old set of armor, lots of rivets I've used the Retr0bright on a ten year old ATA helmet that the cap had gone yellow, worked a treat after being outside in the sun for a couple of hours on a cool afternoon. Will it yellow again only time will tell but if it does I'll just give it another go with the Retr0bright. Thanks for sharing your experience, never too old to start posting1 point

Yeah mine were also trial and error. My back and kidney originally ended up having a bit of a gap even when I thought I had them short, so I doubled up the elastic (for extra strength in the strain) and then shortened. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk1 point

Noticed someone is supplying Hasbro upgrade kits in the US, since Doopy Doo's stopped supplying theirs there haven't been many Hasbro upgrade builds on the forum. Note these will only obtain Level 2 EIB, for L3 "Bapty-style, Hasbro and Rubies blasters are not allowed, even conversions" DH-P/FX - Darth Hair Props And Effects Shop1 point

Only request I’d add if it’s not already in the CRL as a note that “TLJ style helmets in red color will not be accepted as this character is a pre TLJ character” That’s just my take if the decision is set that it should be TFA style. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk1 point

Hi folks, I think I’m going to need a bit more guidance on the hand guards. I’ve drawn on my images where I think the trim line should be if you wouldn’t mind checking this for me. The left hand in particular is more tricky as it’s more bulbous and doesn’t have an obvious trim line so I’m completely guessing at the moment. RIGHT LEFT Thanks all, Tim Sent from The Empire1 point

Agree with the Hydrogen Peroxide trick, did that a few years ago with my Star Wars Lego that had yellowed, works woinders on White bricks, not so good on blue & grey briks though1 point

Very informative. Can I just add that you really shouldn't use Mr Sheen on your armor as it does contain amonia which will in time yellow AbS. Best to find a polish without this in it.1 point
