Greetings, Fellow Troopers,

The holiday season is upon us. I know that a lot of the Troopers out there are doing parades and a lot of charity events like "Toys For Tots" and "The Empty Stocking Fund." I also know that the 501st Legion is a costuming group, but it truly does warm my heart to know how much good this organization can do and how we can make a difference in someone's life and in this world. So, buckets off to everyone out there that is giving their all!

Contributor Badges and "How To" Tutorials

A few of our web tools are being switched around. Some great tutorials are being added into the TKipedia. A special thanks to Darth Aloha for his hard work here. I am very pleased to know that these will help any future members to make their TK build or upgrade an easier one.

There has been a special contributors badge made up for the ones that have done and the ones that are stepping up to make some awesome how tos and tutorials. So, I challenge all of you to take the time to put forth some great information out there so you can earn a contributor's badge. A special thanks to Damian for designing the badge.

The FISD Brochure

Back at C6, I designed a brochure to help promote the FISD website. I was pleased to find out that the brochure was one of the hot tickets for handouts at the 501st table. The unfortunate matter is that the computer that I designed the brochure on was an 11 year old computer that crashed. Since then, I have been trying to find someone that could recover the information that I lost when the computer crashed. I finally gave up the ghost and recently purchased Photoshop and redesigned and did some upgrading to the brochure. We have it posted now in a PDF for all the TK's out there so they can have it professionally printed or they can print it home. (PDF Link coming shortly.) The brochure will help promote at events/troops and inform anyone wishing to know more about the Stormtrooper costuming and guide them down the right path of making the best TK they can for the 501st Legion.

The Brochure is a "Z" style tri-fold (8.5 tall x 11 wide).

I tweaked everything.........even my brain....LOL

The Remainder Of The Year

Even though the year is winding down, there are still a lot of great things to come for the FISD. One of the little treats will be that we hopefully will have the Kashyyyk Stormtrooper (KTK) as one of the new costumes for the Legion within this month.

I am going to be like Santa and keep the rest of these gifts a secret until they are opened. So look for some good surprises coming very soon.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all!!!

With Unquestioned Loyalty,

This month's newsletter tip is all about the knee pack. Call it the knee ammo or knee battery pack, either way its the thing that sits at the bottom of the right thigh. Many people struggle with getting this just right. Thanks to our DO's tutorial, we will explain how to trim the curve properly. In addition we have a few screen shots from our reference gallery that show where to place the knee pack on the thigh itself.

Once you have determined the proper length take a standard sized spray can and lay out your curve. Ensure that the bottom edge of the belt and the side edge of the belt are tangential to the curve of the can. The photos below are self explanatory.

med_gallery_14191_45_104185.jpg

When it comes to attaching your knee pack to the thigh, the split or cap rivet should go through upper corner of the knee pack and into the center of the thigh's lower ridge. If that makes no sense please look at these images for clarification. The front box must be centered on the thigh cover strip.

Click on an image to see the larger more detailed version in the FISD reference gallery.

Below is an example taken from a Centurion request of the past that shows where to place the rivet through the thigh pack and thigh ridge.

What a month of amazing trooping opportunities from all over the world. We had troopers patrolling Holiday parades, toy, memorabilia and Lego events, bowling, hockey promos, photo shoots on Tatooine ( (ok not really but close enough) and even had troopers starring in a movie. It is so very difficult to decide which one deserves to be the Troop of the Month as they are all important in so many different ways.

In the sprit it of making children smile and giving back to those who have helped you in the past, this month's Troop of the Month is the Lurie's Children's Hospital Visit. A Big Shout Out goes to Carlos (Solcar23) and the Midwest Garrison in partnership with the local Rebel Legion. This was a troop featuring a who's who of great OT icon characters: Stormtrooper, Scout Trooper, Lord Vader, Boba Fett, Tie Pilot, Han, Leia and Chewbacca ... SWEET!

Everyone got into the act and did their very best to brighten the day of many children at the hospital. I won't spoil this any further as the troop report really does a fantastic job of summarizing the event. Once more, congrats Carlos and team.

Check out all the troop reports from the last month and those posted for December already. Also, keep your eyes peeled Christmas Day to see our fantastic folks from Florida taking part in Disney's Christmas Parade.

Do you need a TK to fight teddy bears? How about escort a bounty hunter back to his ship on Bespin? What about a Stormtooper to be stationed on the Death Star and have his armor easily stolen by a scruffy nerf herder? Or maybe you require a TK to run around the halls of the Death Star and shoot wildly and consistently miss a 10' tall, slow-moving Wookiee each time. If you answered yes to all four questions, FISD has a single trooper for all of these jobs.

Congratulations to Frank aka rhapsodyred99, our December 2012 Trooper of the Month. In what seems like very short order Frank has attained the goal of getting all the TKs from the three original trilogy movies approved. His Return of the Jedi was awarded the prestigious 69th Centurion. The armor is from CFO. It marks the first CFO kit to win this award, and only FISD's second Return of the Jedi Centurion. I would expect Frank to apply for Expert Infantry and Centurion for his other three costumes shortly. Congrats trooper. Report to the Death Star immediately with your four changes of armor for any occasion.

I should change this section to "FISD Web Server What's up" because I'm more of a server minded guy. Thankfully our DL just hired Dmian as our forum web master and forum admin. Congratulations and welcome back are in order.

Speaking of web design, I intend to disable all 2011 related skins shortly after this newsletter drops. You will be forced to use the FISD 2012 theme when the 2011 ones go away. Please don't be alarmed if the FISD forums look different when you log in. The A New Hope theme will also still be available. RogueTrooper will be commissioning a new theme for 2013 from Dmian. We will let you know when the new theme is imminent.

Many forum users rarely pay attention to the top navigation tabs of the FISD forum. There are two relatively new website sections that you may not have noticed. We have a reference gallery that houses 1895 screen captures from all three original trilogy movies and EU video games. You can find general costume part reference photos as well as photos from the LucasFilm archives. If you are building a TK this is your best place to judge your screen accuracy, rather than other 501st members' photos.

The other new section is the tutorials or TK Information Post (TIP.) As useful posts come up we will be promoting them to become a permanent site tutorial and put into an easy to find category. The collecting has just begun and we anticipate the HOW TO tutorial area to grow quickly. If one of your posts is selected to become a tutorial you will get a little badge next to your name that says "contributor" to let everyone know that you are one of righteous FISD troopers helping troopers. We are making the call for strapping tutorials right now. If you have a nice clean build with snap plates please post how you did it with high quality photos and you may find your post immortalized as a tutorial for all to use.

There are two other forum features on the horizon. First is a portal page that incorporates an article system for us to publish newsletters and detachment related documents. The next thing further down the feature road is what we are calling the TiKipedia. There will be an Tikipedia entry for every part in the CRL explaining what it is, how it is assembled, and where to find the part. Stay tuned for that in Q1 of 2013.

Of course here is this month's Google Analytics statistics:

FISD SERIES TRADING CARDS are all the rage right now, and FISD's official trading card line is OPEN!

Don't be confused by the "2010" posting. This 2012 baby is an extension of that series and is going on NOW. The 2010 instructions in the first post have been updated for the current 2012 run.

There are a lot of other ideas and interest threads floating around in the general Detachment Merch threads, so take a look and see if anything interests you.

Why don't you pair a FISD 5th Anniversary card with your new FISD Trading Card?

I like these newsletters.

But, and I really hate to say this, the back of the brochure/poster spells "unquestioned" wrong at the top. It's missing the "u."

Nice catch! I'm usually quite the grammar hammer but I missed that, I'll chalk it up to viewing it on my phone. Lol

There's a reason why the PDF isn't linked yet :) Good catch!

Just noticed that on the backside of the trifold pamphlet Unquestioned Loyalty is written as Unqestioned Loyalty.

Guess I should have read a little higher. Funny.

Ingrid, if you could email a final draft of the FISD tri-fold to the Legion PR Officers (pro@501st.com) for final approval before issuing it for distribution, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Nice work on the newsletter, Tom!

But if I'd known that the Lurie Hospital event was going to be publicized on the FISD, I might have worn my TK, rather than represent the Scruffy Nerfherder that day. ;)

Cheers, troops!

But you are one of the better looking Solo's Brian. Next time we will need you to play Han as Han plays a TK...LOL

Links to patches and beret brings up an error... HELP!

They're only available to 501st members and posted in the 501st threads on this forum. If you are a member of the 501st, you need to specify this in your profile and have someone (like an admin) 'make the switch' so you get access to those threads :)
