  7. Just passed a year in the 501st and I am very behind in documenting my troops. It will take a minute to upload all my troops, but it will be worth it. ***UPDATE*** Finally caught up as of September of 2019. I tried to follow the general format on using this troop log. I hope that posting 1 post per troop (instead over several) and only having a few photos per troop adds a nice flow along with an organized look. 12. Very nice layout! I have been trooping for just about a year now and for some reason I had no idea about this part of the site! So this is all new to me. I wanted to make sure mine is organized just like yours.

  13. I don't know if this will help or not, but I had a similar issue with the shoulder bells when fitting my husband's RS TK. I found that the white elastic connection between the chest plate and back plate was too long, even though it seemed like it was the right length without the bells attached. I ended up shortening the white elastics up a bit. This ended up reducing the amount of "give" to the left/right, resulting in a more secure arm and tighter aligned bell-to-chest/back connection. Basically, If you have too much white elastic in there at the shoulder between the chest and back, your bells will pop out and away, resulting in large black gaps that we all want to avoid. Before adjustment on left. After adjustment on right. No trimming was involved, just shortening up the white elastics.

  19. Looks like you will be well prepared, Jessy! I always recommend that new builders get all supplies in place well before starting a build. Nothing worse than needing something and having to pause your build to go out and get it or worse yet have to order it! As for nylon or elastic, I would suggest getting both in various sizes, and here is why: Nylon: Good for areas that don't need to flex a lot. Very strong, and will basically last a LONG time. Elastic: Perfect for areas that need to flex, like the bicep/forearm connection. However, depending on how often you wear your costume it can get permanently stretched out over time with use. Hint: If using it, be SURE to fold over the ends at least once and glue them together before attaching a snap, as they can pull out over time with a lot of use. Another thing I always recommend is to use the "double snap" method on all attachments. Yeah, it costs a bit more to do because of the extra supplies, but you will be assured that none of your connections will ever come undone while wearing your costume (wardrobe malfunction). I used single snap connections on my first build, and on my very first troop the shoulder bell snap came loose from the shoulder bridge. Very embarrassing, lol. You can purchase elastic and nylon on eBay in rolls pretty inexpensively, and as mentioned in my snap setting thread https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/topic/44617-snap-setting-101/ a cheap ($10-12.00) soldering/woodburning iron will save you a TON of time making the holes. It is also great for sealing the ends of the nylon.

  40. I. Get Supplies First off, want to give a shoutout to @justjoseph63 for their great post on Supply List for TK Builds. Obviously the majority of us have read it, but still pretty awesome, and credit where credit is due. I took that base, and spoke to @shashachu and @Navajo Bro to tweak tweak tweak. Since the Fem7 is not going to be 501st approved and is a bit of a speed build, I am opting to skip certain parts that are not necessary, such as the rivets and paints. A. ABS manipulation 1. E-6000 glue > got at local Ace Hardware 2. Rotary tool > received from Amazon 3. Scissors > I have regular scissors, will see if I need sheers later, but I know my local Ace has them 4. clamps > received from Amazon 5. magnets > have some, left over from name ID's from a party. I think I might be able to get away with it, we'll see 6. hammer > I own, but I'm actually considering getting a small hammer because I worry it's a little too heavy 7. Exacto knife and blades > received knife from Ace, got extra blades from the packaging team at work 8. Metal ruler > took one from work, packaging team was dumping scuffy ones in preparation for a VIP visit B. Attachings 1. Tandy Line 24 snaps > received from Amazon 2. Snap setting tool > received from Amazon 3. Industrial strength low profile velcro > got a roll in White from Amazon C. Safety first, and extra useful things 1. safety glasses > Amazon 2. cut resistant gloves > Amazon 3. respirator mask > I own... I lived in China during SARS. I don't think I'll ever not have N95's on hand. 1. Painter's tape > I won and picked up extra 2. pencil > own 3. hand files > received from Amazon 4. Sandpaper > got a sandblock, but can grab from Ace if needed 5. sandblock > Ace hardware Still need to acquire [edit: done!] 1. Nylon or Elastic > there's so much chatter between the two... 2. foam padding part 2 and part 3 after getting some advice from @justjoseph63

  46. Mine is a hybrid/mashup. Resin Doopydoos kit, but I replaced the magazine well, folding stock (functioning), trigger guard, entire front end and rear cap with accurate aluminum replicas to keep authentic look high but the weight down. I did use a real Sterling magazine though. The whole thing weighs in at just a little over 2 pounds (about 1 kilo). One thing you will need to consider is that very often on a troop you will be asked "Can I hold your gun"? (Mostly kids). For those that carry Hyperfirms/rubber models this is not a problem, since it really can't be "broken" if they should drop it. However, since mine is mostly a resin build, I decline by saying something along the lines of "The Emperor forbids it" or "It's against regulations".

  47. I'm kind of shocked I didn't make one of these before, these are so awesome! I would love to make one for every costume I own! A duct tape mannequin is a great way to: - create a form that is a very close replication of your body shape - awesome way to display your armor - a great way to test sizing for parts, armor mods, etc. This is nothing super new, people have made duct tape mannequins for years. They started off in the seamstress / dress making hobby (people would use duct tape to create a torso dress form for tailoring their own outfits), and there's been many Legion members who have made these for their costumes. It's not that hard, it just takes time and some simple materials. Materials: 2 large rolls of duct tape (don't get the foil kind, just the regular silver kind PVC pipe (I used 3/4" pipe) 1 PVC cross connector 4 PVC "T" junctions 4 PVC 90 degree elbows PVC cement fiberfill / foam / pillow stuffing Scissors with round tips Old long sleeve top, pants (sweats will do) and socks A friend to help you 1. Get dressed in your old clothes. They should be somewhat thin / not too bulky 2. Go to the bathroom before proceeding (important!) 3. Stand in whatever pose you want. I chose to keep it neutral. If you want to bend the elbows for shooting / blaster poses, it's possible - just keep in mind it may be harder to dress the mannequin. Also, you (as the model) will get hot. Try not to move too much, and don't do this outside / in the sun. 4. Have your friend / helper start wrapping you in duct tape! Star from the bottom and work up. Avoid wrapping the tape "off the roll" if you do this, the tape will be very tight / uncomfortable and the mannequin will be smaller than you. Tear off sections of tape about 12" long and make sure to overlap half the previous strip as you work up. I chose to wrap the bottoms of my heels so that I can insert the mannequins legs into the boots. This is why you need to wear socks. Don't bother making the feet, it won't likely stand on it's own anyways. You can add a post / stand for it later, or simply lean it against a wall. 5. Continue wrapping the upper body. I found that I was slouching / leaning forward, so try to stand straight. Make sure to press the tape down evenly and smooth it out. 6. Make sure that the tape overlaps all the way around the back. I'm bringing sexy back! Yeah! 7. After you have wrapped one layer of tape, it should be good to cut the tape and extract your self. If you're bigger / taller, I would recommend 2 layers of tape - again, overlap the seams. Use scissors with round tips, or if you have some - medical safety scissors also work great (the ones for cutting bandages off patients). Cut a vertical seam down the back, across the back of both arms, and down the back of the legs. You should be able to step out easily. Here's my "body wrap" laid out on the floor. I have laid the skeleton / support frame on it. 8. Go get a drink of water to rehydrate. 9. Make your skeleton support. I used 3/4" PVC pipe. Copy the joints here or make your own. Use your own body as a guide for how long each should be. Notice that I bent the legs of the skeleton outwards to match the pose I was in. I didn't bother making bones / supports for the arms, as I wanted my arms to lay at the sides anyways, and it's just extra weight. Use PVC glue to attach each section of pipe. 10. Tape over the seams starting at the feet, and do about 12"-16" at a time. Tape one section, then stuff it with the fiberfill / foam, etc. You can buy it at fabric stores and even Walmart, it's used for stuffing pillows and such (my wife and I joked about how we should walk into one of those "Build a Bear" shops with my empty mannequin and say "I need this stuffed". Here's mine after stuffing. I threw some old worn out bike shorts on it since I want the under suit areas to show through as black (*TIP: simply cover the elbow, armpit, and knee areas with black gaffer tape or hockey tape! It will look like an undersuit without the cost! 11. Dress your new action figure! Many thanks to my wife for helping me out for a few hours. She thought this was pretty funny, but said it was very cool and turned out great!

  48. I originally wrote this long ago for the Spec Ops detachment because the black is more menacing then the white anyhoodles its about time i brought it over here. aka "how to move your sexy plastic bod so you don't traumatize little kids and freak old people the F out". It's come to my attention that troops are just standing around, literally. One does not simply wait in front of the backdrop for people to come up and take pictures, the only exception being if there's a large "circle" of people, meaning the crowd is moving like in an airport or a mall and they just want to snap a selfie and move along. But in most cases your garrison/squad will have the booth set up in what I call an "open" photo op. This is where people are free to move about and there isn't a set route such as conventions. At my squad's cons, we're placed near the convention center entrance so we make a good opening impression, but away from the main vendors as not to "take away" from artists and shopkeepers. Sure people want the perfect picture of them with a few troopers or vader at the death star but it's important to keep in mind you aren't just a trooper. You are a mascot, a representative of the LEGION, not the empire. Remember the whole "bad guys doing good" motto? Troops are a group effort people, don't just stand around, interact! With the baby-to-toddlers group, they don't know what you are or what you might do. I give a friendly "palm straight, fingers moving" wave, or a quick "hand twisting side to side" wave and tilt my head to appear nonthreatening in a cartoony way. Older kids between 6-10 who generally may know of star wars, might look at you unsure of if theyre supposed to go up to you or not. Often the parents will coax them into getting close for a picture. This part is imperative. Before they shy away (or run up in glee), bend over slightly and nod your head yes, or wave them "come on over" to let them know "I acknowledge you". I then will look down and put my palm out to say "I want you to stand here" and get into either standing or battle position towards the camera. It helps to be able to read the kids by their facial expressions. Theres the general omg a star wars guy grin, and theres the parent-forced smile. For single kids, if I deem them worthy, I might have them hold my blaster for the shot, with one hand on my belt and the other on the kids shoulder. This really impresses people and shudders away all thoughts of you being "a bad guy". I warn, don't do this for everyone, but when done 99% of them give you your blaster back immediately. The other 1% either don't know what to do next or just want to see the picture first. For multiple-child shots, I always aim my blaster at the camera, this is because having it down you might not be able to see your actually aiming right at the dome of a little girl. You don't want to single anyone out. And again NEVER AIM YOUR BLASTER AT A CHILD. For troops that have a no-blasters policy, just hold onto your belt with both hands like vader for multi-kid shots, or one hand on the child's shoulder with your other hand on your belt for single child shots. For everyone else (ages 12 to 112) it's strictly professional, NOW you can just stand there and wait for the hotties to make their latest facebook picture. Occasionally from adults you may get odd requests. I was asked if a guy could hug me.. Anyway, perfect example: You might get "pretend you just captured me guy" which is a simple everyone aim blasters with his hands up, or if solo, I make him kneel, arms above his head, one hand on his shoulder, and blaster pointed to his head. There's a certain point where it's obvious if you're just blatantly aiming at everyone, but don't do that. The spectators or "next in line" people don't want to see repetition. Here's some other helpful tips: Never do anything you aren't comfortable with. Almost all people ASK you to get a picture out of human nature. They'll ask those odd things I mentioned too. That may include "can I kiss you" which has happened to a trooper who was single, and he specified "helmet on, or off?" But be careful with stuff like that. Never let adults hold your blaster. Not because they could run off or drop it, but it just makes for a bad picture. If you let a child hold your blaster, make sure they hold it properly before letting go. One or two have tried to hold it like a pistol then realize how heavy it is, before I let go I make sure there's two hands. If said child drops your blaster, motion to them that's it's okay. Their first reaction will be "OH F**K" and seeing as how you're pretty much an angry god in their eyes, you don't want them to freak out. Hopefully them being so close to the ground your blaster wont be damaged but if that's the case, ask a handler to get the parts. Dont take off your helmet unless you're in a private area, bathroom, or in back of the backdrop. Being helmetless is as bad as being naked. It takes the "real live stormtrooper" fantasy away. After someone gets their picture with you, offer up a high five. It's the universal bro-fist.
