HOWTO: make aged ABS white again
john danter replied to dashrazor's topic in Tutorials, Tips and HOWTOs
Yeah he's not lying. Bromine is used in ABS to make it fire retardant. Used in a lot of plastics as it goes I'd like to see this done on a test bit first though......? -
My TE ROTJ helmet so far..
john danter replied to Rob's topic in Build Threads Requireing Maintenance
Aw, don't say that. I wasn't happy with mine so i just hand painted them, not accurate I know, but looks better than creased decals. Sad now -
You must do what you feel is right of course I accepted him. Does no harm. As for people telling him stuff, i dunno? I asked him about his faceplate undercut and why the rear trap had moved about 5/6 months ago He was amazed we're still debating it. He dodged the answer BTW Although dropped a hint he doesn't use his original mould, but a copy of it......?

Sorry, missed the velcro question. Entirely up to you dude. It will be big enough to get your feet through if you do seal it, so don't worry Mine are glued, my calves are velcrod though -

You just over lap the left ontop of the one on the right. A lot of armour has that on it sadly. Not sure why You could cut the lower corner of the lip off (so it sits neater/flatter) if you get it right...but don't blame me if you mess it up -
Hello Update on this lads.... This is something that means quite a lot to me Many hours of research, many emails back and forth to folks involved, many pigeon english emails with a Japanese sculptor, many incorrect purchases of what I believed the bottles to be and many cut fingers and splitners to make my prototype version, made just before CE, shown here: With help from the sculptor and a lovely Japanese lady named Akiko who I used to work with I've managed to track down the exact thing used way back in 76 to recreate the bottles used on the Death Star surface and what a lot have believed for a long time were also then used on the back of the 2 TKs outside the Death Star as the Falcon gets sucked in Here the guys are Cleaned up in photoshop This image shows the bottle tops are flat with some nipple on top This toy made many moons ago shows what the maker thought the bottles should look like (this was based on what he was told BTW ) When most saw those bottles, it was dismissed as being inaccurate due to the hose and fastening to the chest....... However a few years ago a chap on the RPF thought they might be bottles used on the Death Star surface. Then there was a SW exhibition in London. In there they had a few meters of the Death Star surface and these turret guns. I saw these bottles (before the link was made) and yes, they're about the correct size Shown in the corner here Now then.... Does this look familiar to you I then went through everything to try and recreate the shapes seen. this is what I've come up with so far With a clue from the scupltor I then managed to nail it down further with the help of this pattern here (thanks to Alex Howard for the reminder on this pattern) I'm pretty happy with myself after some 5+ years of fiddling with this. All I need to do now, is take my time, create the rest of the detail and vac form a new bottom This is all I have on that so far. The sculptor was told those lower parts were just made up However, I doubt that and they MUST have been used elsewhere in the film. So can I ask if anyone wants to kindly sit down and watch ANH 100 times in slow mo to find the lower bit, feel free. John

ANH TM 1mm with screen accurate strapping
john danter replied to ObiHahn's topic in Build Threads Requireing Maintenance
Dennis: ignore me mate I think I can see it with you now. Damn iPhone Ive seen a pic of a torso with a clear male popper stud inside on the chest shoulder, on the elastic, thought you didn't have one, but you do Sorry just didn't see it first time -
Hello, Has anyone skinny here ever tried modding the ROTJ style biceps etc to make them more like ANH like? I've put my arms together and think I have room to do this, but I'm unsure and it's a bit of gamble. What I was thinking was use a heat gun, make the parts more rounded, cut off the butting strip platforms and try and glue them back together Anyone tried it here yet? I'll have new arms soon, so if I mess it up, it's no biggie John

Very nice mate I put a popper underneath my shoulder straps on the chest plate though? Your gap is tiny. I wouldn't worry about it. Very nice job mate -
Don't you have any art shops near you mate? It doesn't have to be purple Any masking fluid will do for what you want it for. It's just liquid latex really. Try a local art shop. I think it's used for water colours mainly

Yeah, Andrew hasn't helped himself by lying about his moulds but there's no denying he knows how to pull a suit and the final product, regardless of mould origins, is quite nice with him. I'd just sooner spend my money elsewhere. I used to have his suit, never wore it and have 2 of his lids

I use Masquepen fluid It's white though not purple -----

I understand your frustration Warren, but if I can say this, I'm a short fellow. Weigh 10st soaking wet and have a 37" chest. I can't expect to get cleared as a Vader in the UKG. Doesn't upset me, I just accept it. Actually the 501st isn't allowed to discriminate on height, build etc, but we just hope people will use common sense. I could throw my toys out and build a Vader and then kick up one hell of a stink with the 501st if I'm not cleared. But would I be happy I don't look right? Probably not, if I were truly honest with myself. I'd also love to wear my girlfriends Zam Wessell outfit Not ashamed to say that as it's ace, lol. I'm really proud of it but Becky is a little disheartened with stuff ATM and doesn't want to wear it, sadly. Even though she has a veil, I say out of common sense, I won't wear it. Maybe ask our GML what can be done to help him feel comfortable with clearing you. He can't clear everything that gets sent in. Looking at your avatar, I'm sorry to say you do look young dude. (Look cool, but do look young) So find ways of aging youself and maybe slaping inserts into your boots. Surely problem solved then? Matt looks like he's sorting you out, but try not to get too upset about it. Just ask what can be done to fix it
-
Qui Gon Gin isn't a 501st costume anyway mate, he's a Jedi. 501st are TKs, Vader, Boba, Bikers etc. The bad guys Are you confusing UKG with Rebel Legion or Rebel Command? Sorry to hear about your non clearance dude, would you like me to look into it for you?

Those Brads are also called paper clips right?

I'm in the middle of making it, in between making a few other things and trying to fond a new job Once they're out the way I plan to do a nice tutorial on how to build it etc Sorry for the delay but it'll come

Tapered forearm armor ok?
john danter replied to TrooperVenger's topic in Assembly, Mods, and Painting
Ricky, your armour is fine mate. You can try and do what I suggested to get it looking like ANH at the biceps etc, just make sure it doesn't pinch you when you bend your arms. the tighter it is, the more it will do it I wish I'd tapered mine out a lot more. you don't have a return edge at the wrist, and that's fine mate, there was very little at the elbow either John -
I make mine meet just under the vocoder. No one sees that part of you and it looks like a continous band. Rounded out, yes
-
Try this mate----------
