FWIW, I've been enjoying the back and forth. While it seems tangential to your original intent, it's discussions like these that bring to light the facts of the matter. I'd ask you not be discouraged by them as I think it is sometimes the only way information is brought to light. Having both makers chime in directly and with special help in supplemental lighting pictures from the members has made this one of the best threads we've seen in awhile. Secondly, I'd like to thank everyone for keeping the tone civil, as not every armor maker is able to present facts clearly without resorting to baiting, flaming, etc. Hats off gents

Armor prices go up and down all the time, even throughout the year. Sep/Oct prices tend to be high, fall in summer. I'd base the price on what it's worth to you relevant to what you can get elsewhere. It's not your problem if the seller takes a loss (or gain). Example: I'm selling a TE2 kit at less than what I paid simply as going prices have fallen. At one point a hyperfirm MG-34 sold for north of $500, today they are $325.

Well, there is no silver bullet really. Even if you got an ABS helmet it's no guarantee that it will perfectly match. The MRCE certainly doesn't match ABS armor (worse than AP/RT IMHO) but that doesn't stop folks from wearing them. For painting, if you're going to have the body shop paint the lid you may as well just paint the whole kit, no? Not sure what that costs, but I'd be surprised it if were much more. It's far easier for sandtroopers - I've seen TE2 on FX armor and you can't tell at all - weathering is a great equalizer. In the end pick a bucket that you thinks works best - it's your kit/happiness after all.

PT and DA are known recasters are not condoned FWIW. If you want ABS, AM is starting to pull kits in addition to ATA & CAP, and I think RT may do them on request soon as well.

I believe ATA will be your least expensive option - he even undersells the AP recaster in Australia - even when shipping is factored in! If you want ABS though, your best legitimate option is looking for an AP second. For the record - the FX is the only helmet that I know of that is 501st acceptable but is *not* EIB acceptable.

Actually this is correct - check out the screen caps and the EIB standards for the TKC. Lucas really likes the ROTJ body with ANH helmet/hands.

I went through the requirements one by one and you nailed them all - truly excellent. I was actually about to say that I think the fourth tooth needs to be cut out (as it's an ANH Stunt helmet), as it's hard to tell from the pix. Lots of attention to detail (including many EIB should-haves) and you did an exemplary job of fitting it to you. I'd also say that yours is probably the best FX helmet I've seen to date in terms of accuracy. If ever we did allow an FX bucket, yours would be it. Alas, the FX helmet is not currently accepted for EIB (it was phased out a few years ago) is the only thing that would stop you from EIB.

I'd agree that there is some mix and matching between movie versions - this is a mostly an ROTJ suit with ANH hands & helmet details. If you really want to go ROTJ then getting the helmet and hands to match would be a good first step, and those ab plate buttons are just plain huge. First and foremost... There is no one 'best' armor. There is a 'best' armor for *you* depending on a few factors: 1) Your budget 2) What your body size is (yes, different armors lend themselves for different body types) * 3) How experienced are you at building armor 4) It's not the kit, it's how it's fitted to the wearer that counts * While FISD does not endorse any particular armor maker, below are sellers who have proven themselves time and again in terms of customer service, honesty, and quality. All makes below can be made to be both 501st and FISD acceptable. MATERIALS Armor is made from either HIPS or ABS. HIPS --- Pros: generally less expensive, easier to trim. --- Cons: needs painting or serious polishing to look shiny. Most HIPS will not be as durable as ABS or take the stress of ABS --- Suitability: will hold up fine for regular trooping ABS --- Pros: no need to paint, high durability --- Cons: may lack the detail of HIPS, usually harder to trim --- Suitability: will hold up fine for regular trooping plus take a lot of abuse OTHER TERMS Untrimmed: means the kit comes untrimmed and you'll have to trim the parts before starting assembly. Trimmed: parts are pre-trimmed and you can start assembling right away ANH Derived: traces back to a screen used helmet. Armor came from an incomplete ROTJ suit that was supplemented with parts from a tour suit, with this base being modified to be more ANH accurate in detailing. Parts will need to be butt joined with a finishing strip glued on top. * ON SIZING ANH Derived armor (TE2, AP) was sculpted for a typical UK actor circa 1976, e.g. 5'10" and 165lbs. While good for smaller body types, it has been successfully made to fit people as large as 6'4" 235lbs though requires a bit of shimming to pull this off. 1. If you are taller or larger in frame/girth, you may want to consider AM, RT, or TM armor makes for easier fitting. 2. If you are shorter, while ANH derived armor may lend itself to your size, even FX armor has been made to fit and look good on people as small as 5'6" and 115lbs (and smaller!). 3. RT has upsized his helmet by 4-5% which makes it equivalent to the size of the old FX but is more accurate in appearance. So, while it's true that every kit has a certain ideal body type, every make has been made to fit every body type and still look good. WHO TO AVOID 1. You know, Mark's (FireBladeJedi) trick of how he did his shins may be a neat idea too - e.g. using elastic and hooks. This allows is to open slightly and flex yet may be easier to open/close rather than constantly ripping a whole seam of velcro.
