  1. I've never had a problem, and I've tried it with styrene too. The main reason I freeze plastic is to take a mold box apart. I've never broken a piece of plastic yet.
  2. Yes really, plastic and glue contract at different rates when subjected to extreme temp changes. So if you freeze it it'll come off, but if you are trooping with it it'll hold as the change is more gradual and your body temp will probably keep it above freezing anyway. Also remember a deep freeze usually sits around 0F and most sane people don't troop when it's that cold.
  3. If you don't mind removing all the glue from the piece you can throw it in the freezer for a few hours. After that flex it a little and the glue should pop off with a little effort.
  4. Well the biggest problem I see is power. 4AAs have 6 volts and depending how you connect the two packs you can get 12v out of them. Can the Rom-FX run on 6 or 12 volts?
  5. You can also get the same setup from radio shack and build it yourself for about half the price.
  6. Nice job Mike. I've used superglue and glass clothbefore, but never though to use a strip of shirt or pillowcase.
  7. The Wal-marts by me do not carry it. Jo-ann's has it and many wood carving/working stores carry it as well.
  8. If it's a black stormtrooper you would join as a TX which is special operations. Contact your local garrison and the local GML as they can answer all your membership questions.
  9. Third thread down in the project orders section: -------
  10. Good luck on the job, they are hard to come by these days.
  11. If you want the most inexpensive you can get a MR CE on ebay for about a hundred. Of course the more accurate helmets do cost a bit more.
  12. Alot of people have been asking my stance on recasting and the FISD today. I've posted it before (search if you don't believe me) and I'll post it again but this time I'm the DL. These are only my opinions and are not anything official from the detachment or the Legion. Do I think that is OK to copy another persons original work, of course not. The biggest problem with recasting is you generally get something that is poorly made for an inflated price, and as always it's buyer beware. I also don't think that it s right to make a quick buck off someone else's hard work even though it happens all the time in the "real" world and is often encouraged. As always educating the new guy is the most effective way to combat shady sellers and point them in the right direction so they don't get taken advantage of. I also know that on the FISD we have convinced a few new guys that recasting is not the right thing to to and it's not the path to a cheaper costume and they have headed our warning. The FISD as all 501st detachments are places of learning and this is not the most pleasant side of the hobby but it exists. Now do I believe all recasters should be banned form the FISD.....NO. Even if the Legion's position on recasting were different, the FISD is a place of learning and anyone who can contribute is welcome. This may strike a few the wrong way but in the interests of improving the communities knowledge it's the fairest solution. The FISD is a place of learning, and as long as I'm DL that will never change. Yes I'm a member at all the major prop forums and they all have their niches, but I've yet to see one as helpful to the new guy as any 501st detachment. To anyone why missed the writing on the wall or any detachment charter, that is what we are about. Helping people build, improve, and if they wish push the limits with their costume. While I don't agree with recasting, I have no interest in being the prop ethics police and that is not what I was elected to do. If anyone feels the need to discuss this further feel free to contact me. Troop on.
  13. Bernard, our only ROTJ elite, cut out the FX button box and reattached it up-side-down. He made a build thread that is buried in the depths, a quick search should turn it up.
  14. The Star garrison can take a while to get access. Try emailing the CO directly for a faster response.
  15. Because it's LFL's rights. It's the same reason why SW artists can't make SW art to sell without LFL's ok.
  16. Nice conversion job.
  17. Obviously people didn't head the warning to knock off the personal jabs, and recasting debate in this thread. All I can say is everyone was given a warning, it's posted in red on page 2. So don't complain when the we (the staff) have to take action with this blatant display of showmanship. It should be noted that whatever other prop/costuming forums think or do will not effect the way the FISD does things. We are held to a set of rules above ourselves, that's why some join the 501st and others choose not to.
  18. Paul posted a link to a thread on CTN about how to put a return edge on ABS. I stickied it somewhere around here .
  19. I was referring to the length of the legs, and possibly the forearms. RT sculpted it to his body type and he is 6 foot 210 lbs.
  20. RT is made form ABS as well. It's actually made on the big side so it should fit you well, but you may have to trim a little off the length. Also remember all armor can be modified for any body type. CMA Navy modded a TE2 to wear and he is 6'4" and at the time was 260+.
  21. Weight is proportionate to height for armor. So how tall are you?
  22. The teeth/frown fix seems to be a result of inconsistent manufacturing. Some helmets need it some don't. If you don't know post a picture and ask.
  23. Also fill/smooth out the chin seam, and fix the teeth if needed.
  24. Actually no. The 501st is not a non-profit or a for profit. It is a non-entity, that is why there are no dues, and no money coming in or going out. Any expenses are covered by passing the hat and they are sent to individuals heading up projects, never the 501st.
  25. Mike's not jumping down your throat, he's just telling it like it is.
