Hello There! I've been lurking awhile now but just got tickets to Star Wars Celebration in Japan so it's time to start my build with a hard deadline. I bought a kit from 850Armorworks ages ago, but since lurking for so long, I've decided to try to achieve a higher level of accuracy and put my 3D printers to work. Happy Star Wars Day everyone! This seems like a good day to start posting about my little project. I am making a set of 3D printed Rogue One Stormtrooper armour. Once it's ready I hope to join the 501st UK garrison. I've studied every thread on this forum on the subject of 3D printing and R1TK armour (including all thirty pages of discussion on the CRL). This ain't my first rodeo: during lockdown I sculpted, moulded, cast and painted a full-size wearable Boba Fett helmet: Work In Progress Boba Fett helmet gallery Fnished Boba Fett helmet The next year I did a Mando helmet: Mando WIP Mando Final Last year I 3D printed a Rogue One Stormtrooper helmet from Nico Henderson's files: I enjoyed that project so much that I just decided to keep on going, so here we are! After looking at lots of files on CGTrader and other sites, I settled on a set of files by Alain Rivard. These looked more accurate than the Akira Yuming files which everyone uses. Turns out, they are but they have their own problems which I may get into later. To supplement these files I also used tk421jag's Thermal Detonator from Thingiverse Plus the sniper knee from the Akira-Yuming set as it is much better than the Alain Rivard piece. Also, Big Jasoni's Belt boxes: I also plan to print out the excellent Hovi-Mix parts from chrioboy: Finally, I obtained the updated Nico helmet files from TKModder421 and printed a second helmet: Since the start of February, I have 1) Printed out all the pieces 2) Filled, sanded and primed the abdominal section. I have a long way to go, and I expect this project to keep me busy for the rest of the year! Unfortunately it's been raining Loth-cats and banthas here in the UK recently, which has slowed me down a bit: it's hard to work up enthuiasm for shed time when it's as wet and muddy as Mimban outside. However, today was nice and sunny, so I got some photos. Everything: Abdomen piece (nearly finished!) Helmet: Chest and Back: Belts and Butts: Arms: Legs (big pieces): Legs (small pieces): More to follow!1 point

Here are some pictures on the suit with lights on , taken on a mostly cloudy day (not much reflectivity showing of the gloss white). Thought I would add some backgrounds1 point

It's ben lovely weather here in the UK: the first nice weather all year. I got out into the shed and Did Stuff. Today I mostly screwed together the Kidney Plate, Belt and Thermal Detonator bracket. I'm going for the newer design modelled by this wooden fellow at Celebration 2022: As you can see, the Kidney plate goes over the outside of the belt, with the Thermal Detonator bracket on top. I guess it's theoretically more secure than the design used in Rogue One, where the kidney plate and belt were always in danger of parting company. However it has it's own problems, as seen on the trooper in the middle of this frame, whose kidney plate has come detached on one side, taking their belt and thermal detonator with it. To counter the possibility of that happening to me, I'm using magnets and brackets AND velcro to hold the kidney plate to the abdomen plate. It won't be going anywhere! I bolted everything together with cabinet bolts, something like these: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Connecting-Connectors-Kitchen-Furniture-Connecters/dp/B09CQ5R54W They turned out to be a bit too long, and I had to dremel about 6mm off the screw and the barrel. If I could have found ones with a 25mm long barrel, they would have been perfect. For an added flourish, I "attached" the detonator with two pairs of strong earth magnets. Tonight's WIP gallery: Thermal Detonator: With magnets: Bracket: With magnets: Assembled: Ready to throw at some rebels:1 point

Hello there!!! Which Mr Paul files are you printing? The shins and forearms I assume? I've also got that set and have been neglecting my printers. The Akira Yuming set on cgtrader is a nice R1 armor set also. At least one has been approved. Sometimes nice to mix and match. I have 3 R1 file sets counting the Galactic Armory... heh. I hoard. Good luck with the build! Looking forward to following.1 point

Softparts are currently under re-do at a friends house: -Kama will be remade CRL-accurate, including all panels, belt and holster -fleece of the inside of the gloves will be removed -neckseal will get black cloth around, since its too short And i need to make the grip if the blaster accurate, with horizontal lines. And paint it.1 point

I agree but not sure it need to be codified in the CRL, and certainly not under level 3. There is always a certain amount of "use your eyes" with these and the danger is by saying the border is lighter, rather than the subtle difference we see, which may even be a lighting trick due the bias of the fabric, you get a stark difference which looks wrong. At this point if there are no issues with the text, though please do not consider this closed, I am open to submissions for the CRL images. We will need the "hero" images at the top and then appropriate images of each component separately. If you feel this is you, please do reach out directly and we can organise and get this CRL live.1 point

Tony's (Ukswrath) Anovos build thread is definitely legendary. HERE is a link to a PDF of it as well, to save on printed paper and instead view on a tablet or other mobile device. And speaking of Tony, he also sells fan products, amongst other things, on his website. I use his fan bracket system, but I've also heard good things about Henry's. Keep up the good work, Jeffrey!1 point

Thank you for the picture, that's very clear and looks easy enough :-). I had thought it was more complicated than that... the pictures of the actual film costumes seem to show a 4-inch wide white canvas or fabric belt under the hard outer belt, possibly with velcro on it: and the butt plate laid over the top. There's detailed photos and explanations on this forum regarding the thigh straps, the shoulder straps, the abdominal suspenders etc... I figured I might have missed a similar detailed breakdown of the belt area! In other news, these goodies arrived yesterday from @mr paul - lenses for the Nico helmet, the correct frown mesh, and metal plates & elasic for the shoulder bells.1 point

I had a member reach out and let me know he made some V tabs out of some aluminium strips he had for TD brackets and to date he's had no issues. If you do think of going this way I would make sure you round off corners and check after any troop to make sure they are causing any cracks.1 point

I wanted to save this for after my first troop. It didn't seem real before that. Perhaps still surreal. In 2012 at the Calgary Expo I first encountered the 501st "live" and of course I got in line for a photo. At the time I was in love with their costumes and the detail and thought that it must be so much fun for them and maybe one day I could do the same. I had a couple false starts when I was ready to pull the trigger. I was given some contact information for a local TK which was exciting as where I live there is not a lot of members and it is a very large garrison so vast distance between most of us. Well, long story short, he shut me down before I even got out the gate. I'm told he is no longer a member, but at the time he did manage to sour me on the idea. I had a hard time trying to make further contacts and life events always got in the way. I didn't know at the time that I was suffering from depression and anxiety and that was putting the brakes on a lot of things that I wanted to do but just couldn't. Once I got help with those I made advancements in my life and the 501st still was coming up in my mind. In the summer of 2022 I woke up one morning and told myself that now was the time to either do this or forget about it for good. This time it was much easier to connect with the right people and finally get the information I needed. @wook1138 must have answered a thousand questions and with each answer I got closer to the final decision which was, of course, to just do it! There were still a couple stumbling blocks along the way. I knew I didn't have the skills or resources to do the build myself so I did go for the commissioned build then just worked with the strapping and fitting adjustments to tune it for me. While that was still stressful it was still much easier to tackle those kinds of jobs over a scratch build. @revlimiter and @justjoseph63 got me through some stressful times which may have ended up in bailing if they hadn't stepped in and sorted me out. Revlimiter still puts up with me when I need to evaluate what I'm doing. I got things fitting well within acceptable parameters and submitted my final photos on January 8, 2023 (TK23108) then sweated it out for at least 3 years (well maybe 10 days) until the approval email came down the pipe and the Garrison public FB page posted this: Then there was another big event. Only a couple days after approval I had a sudden retina detachment in my left eye and emergency surgery to save the eye. That laid me up for a number of weeks and it didn't heal as well as hoped so I ended up with complications, which are ongoing, and very imbalanced vision between the eyes. I couldn't do any close up work without hours of struggling but there were things I wanted to do to advance the armor further so I worked in short stints and by feel a lot of the time and wondered the whole time if my journey was going to be over before it started. After struggling getting darker lenses in the bucket and fans I couldn't fit my head in with my glasses so trooping would have to be almost done blind. That was a stressful reality as sight lines are already bad enough without that added complication. I was finally able to get new glasses which helped correct some of the every day vision problems but I wasn't all the there yet with the sight clarity and the first opportunity to troop was getting closer and closer. I flip-flopped on the first troop a dozen times in the week leading up but forced myself to go. It was a three day event and much larger than I thought I'd want to do for the first one. Luckily @GilesWoodward saw that there might be a way I could still wear my glasses with the bucket and YES, it worked with some bucket juggling so after the first troop, basically blind, on the first night I was able to see for the remainder of the event! The nerves were going strong on night one and I almost had to be forced into the armor and by day 3 I could hardly wait to get into that armor and troop! The deep end of the pool was exactly what I needed and so was the welcome and all the fuzzy feels that negated that very negative shut-down years ago. Now I still feel like a guy with a plastic pail on my head and it amazes me that others see a Stormtrooper but damn it sure felt right and good! I think that now after a troop that I really earned my TK number and really am a 501st member. Thank you again to all those that got me here! As for the side story from that photo taken in 2012 (left above). I didn't know it at the time but the trooper in that photo was @Starscream3247and I met him last November at a 501st meet and greet but I didn't know that it was him in the photo. Turns out my trip to Calgary got me a photo with one of the troopers who I'll now regularly troop with out of Saskatoon! So at my first troop it seemed fitting to do a full circle and another picture with him but this time I'm in the armor! Bart1 point
