How about going the shoretrooper route? One CRL but with clearly defined versions.

I was looking into this also for a while. There are many amp kits available over here from places like Jaycar, so I imagine there would be similar stores across the globe. But... Then I realised that most of the options available simply use an Aker amp and (for the FOTK bucket) small rectangular laptop speakers. Both of which can be purchased quite cheaply. The only issue I had was feedback due to the proximity of the microphone to the speakers. Despite this I achieved quite an authentic sound, I just need to work on my accent

I think I would be heart broken if I received something of that quality after handing over that much money. I agree, many of those pieces are not even useable. So sorry you all had to go through this. Best of luck from here.

If we're considering using a screen here, how about some kind of HUD? This could be used for displaying messages, either as notifications mirrored from a smart phone or perhaps a dedicated handler device for discrete communication.
