  1. Those of you who have been around on these boards know I've been looking for a full-time job the whole time I've been here. I'm happy to announce I was offered a full-time position today with ancestry.com, the genealogy website. I'm going to be on the Assembly Project Team as a Project Lead. The only downside? I have to become a double agent as my team is known as the "Jedi Council" and the wditing team are the "Imperial Forces." They also have a "Rebel Alliance" team who makes the corrections we give them. Although the salary isn't what I wished for, it is a job with benefits. Now I just need a Jedi name....
  2. Since we have some new people here, I'm going to go back and post links to some of my informative articles. I'm going to especially emphasize the heat and hydration post because summer in the Northern Hemisphere is just around the corner. Welcome to the new people here, and if you have questions please feel free to ask.
  3. Terry embodies the motto, "Troopers helping Troopers." Not only has he posted great tutorials, he takes the time to help people understand them. Kudos to you, Terry. You deserve it.
  4. Getting the approval would draw more attention to the fact that the 501st members are carrying blasters. This could lead to an overall ban. I know here inthe US there can be regulations about having an orange tip during events. My garrison just trooped an event where we couldn't walk across the university campus wearing or carrying weapons but they let us have them indoors once security had checked them. I've also been asked to step out of the vehicle while entering a military base (Fort Leavenworth -home to the maximum security military and federal prison) and tbhe driver did some quick explaining about why we had 5 toy blasters in tbe bed of his truck and only 3 of us... I also had to open my trunk during a traffic stop and had the police officer reach for his sidearm when he saw my...still in the box, unpainted, unmodded...Hasbro blaster sitting there. His comment? "You should have warned me you had a blaster in your trunk." Um, its a white and black blaster with an orange tip...still in the box...it just screamed TOY and he was still jumpy. Like I was going to really shot plasma bolts with it. A word of advice, if you are coming across the border from Canada to troop in the US I would recommend you don't bring your blaster. You might just be unlucky and have it confiscated by customs.
  5. I'm going to throw my two cents in here. I agree that the Hasbro isn't screen accurate, and doesn't pass for Centurion requirements (which it shouldn't). But allowing it modded for 501st and EIB acceptance I don't have a problem with. I have several reasons for that. 1. Cost. Yes, a Doopydoos resin kit for the E-11 is $65.52 (+shipping) (as of today's exchange rate). This does not include the fact that you can't add electronics to it without a lot of problems. I have a Hasbro blaster ($19.99) and a Doopydoos modifying kit ($29.48) which comes to less than the cost of the full kit ($49.47+shipping) Yes I still have to paint it, and glue things on, and cut others off, but it is less expensive than purchasing a kit. 2. Size. The Hasbro is smaller than a real Sterling. As I am on the short/small side, the advantage of the Hasbro is that I don't look like I'm hauling around my older brother's gun. I look proportionate. 3. Electronics. The Hasbro already comes with all the electronics I need installed. I'm not good with electronics so if I were to put them into a pipe build it would be very difficult. Also it seems that the cost of getting the components and rigging everything up would increase the cost of my blaster by at least $50-$100 or more depending on the system. I know Hyperdyne is a lot more expensive. Most kids like to hold a blaster that makes noise or fires when they pull the trigger. With regards to the FX bucket, I know several troopers that cannot, absolutely cannot fit their head into anything else comfortably. One of our members with an FX bucket actually trooped one day with another bucket to see if it was possible...he ended up with a scratched up nose and chin from the bucket which rested against his face the whole time he was trooping. His FX bucket doesn't do that. So that might be a good reason for not completely outlawing the FX bucket. This is just my opinion, for those aspiring to become Centurion Level qualified, I salute you and perhaps someday I'll aspire to that also.
  6. Congratulations and welcome to the FISD!
  7. Will be meeping you in my thoughts. Good luck on the end of school.
  8. I'd consider doing it, but I don't like the clone look. I like the regular TK shins/sniperplate, footwear. Oh well, I'll have to see what it looks like when someone actually builds it in armor.
  9. Get well soon. Antibiotics are definitely your friend. I just barely avoided pneumonia myself this past week so don't mess around. Take the time to recover fully. Better to get healed fully and delay some orders than to suffer a relapse. Sending get well wishes your way.
  10. More than happy to help. Besides it is information I can use also. Just a reminder to all troopers, it is sttarting to get warmer outside...in a couple of weeks I'll repost links to my hydration and heat injuries articles. Don't want to see anyone getting sick this summer.
  11. Darth, welcome to the Fit Club. I applaud your goals. For fitness sake, I'm going to ask you to look at some of the earlier posts about estimating resting metabolic rate and calculating weight loss. This will help you decide on a healthy caloric intake. This note is going to be addressed to everyone now. Please do not go under 1500 calories a day. Why? Do you ask? Because it has been medically proven that eating less than 1500 calories a day compromises the immune system in adults.
  12. Bluehickey, sorry to hear about the metabolism slowing down...I understand that completely. Good luck with the Weight Watchers, they have had a lot of success. I've been lax in not posting more up here, but it has been a long winter and I feel like I'm just now coming out of hibernation. I have lost some weight, not as much as i'd like, but I'm recovering from a bout of bronchitis that almost put me in the hospital so it's been difficult to work out for the past month. Hope to see more people here, and if you are just joining us for the first time, please, please, browse the earlier posts for hints and tips and personal stories to help you. Aachieve your goals.
  13. Very nice! I look forward to seeing the final LFL project.
  14. The USPS doesn't make sense. When I was in graduate school my grandmonther sent me a birthday card. Now she lived only 45 minutes away. It took two weeks to get to me. When it arrived there were two extra postmarks on it. One from Boston, MA and one from Dallas, TX. I was living in Utah at the time. So for some reason my birthday card went clear across the county and back before arriving at my apartment. I kept the envelope because I didn't think anyone would believe me. I really dislike the USPS. Wish they could get their act together.
  15. I think I have begun the inevitable slide into true Geekdom. I was watching my nieces tonight and it was a "movie night" with "Aunt Tiff's Choice." No I didn't choose ANH because my youngest niece turned 5 yesterday & her mother wants her to wait a couple more years to see it. So we watched Bedknobs & Broomsticks. For those of you who haven't seen it, it is set in England during 1940. In the course of the film, a group of German soldiers attempt a raid on an English village and are spoiled by reanimated suits of armor and other uniforms. So I'm watching it and I notice the machine guns they are firing are on bipods...and I start lookin g more closely...they are using MG-34's! Of course the first thing out of my mouth is that they are using DLT-19's, then had to correct myself and say the correct name. So if you want to see an MG-34 in action go watch the movie. Of course you also get to see one chopped in half by an executioner's axe...but I won't spoil it for you. Now I want to watch 'Miracle of the White Stallions' (another Disney film set during WWII) and see if they are used in that movie as well.
  16. Actually found a thread online that showed they were being made in the US at least up until 2010. Real firing Sterlings that could take a Sten magazine. However I don't know if they are still being made and you can't own one in everystate. I'll try and find the link for you and post it. However they can't export outside the US at all.
  17. Not sure I can sit through TPM as I thought it so bad the first time I wouldn't go see AOTC and only went to see ROTS because my friend bought my ticket. I have to admit most of the movie was not to my taste, but seeing the mask come down and hearing that first mechanical breath on the big screen made up for it...especially after having winced through the whole "birth"scene. C'mon, this is such an advanced society they can practically rebuild a man but can't anesthetize the pain of childbirth? Give me a break.
  18. Hengstler counters are used for a variety of purposes in real life. If you want to see an array of different counters go to: Hengstler Counters - product list They are still being produced and used in industry today. I'm not sure they were used on the actual Sterling MK-IV SMG, because every gunsmithing catalog or manual I've seen on them does not have a hengstler counter in use. So I doubt they were used in real life, only added to the gun for the movies.
  19. Was over on the spec ops boards and saw this post for Caboots ----------- Mind you, I like having a new source, but I looked up the page on the website: -------- And not only are they $129.00 US, they have topstitching because they are made out of patent leather. Which means they are shiny. If you must have Caboots, then here you go, but I think TKboots are a better match. The originals weren't super shiny, and even if you aren't going for black painted white screen accuracy, TKboots may be the better option. Just my $.02. Oh yeah, and if you are thinking about purchasing them in black or red (which are options) then add $40.00US to the $129.00. I'll let you decide which boots you like better.
  20. This is sick and wrong, but hilarious!
  21. Liked the fact that both Grant and Irvin had Star Wars items in their pictures. Unfortunately this segment always makes me really sad.
  22. As someone who has trooped for almost a year before joining I can say that being a member does come with some perks. Some events are 501st only which can leave you out on the cold. That said, I now find myself with fewer pictures of each event and am thinking about just being a handler for some of them. So pros and con for both sides.
  23. From the screen captures and what I researched it looks like either riding boots in one scene and low boots in another. there are only 2 scenes in ANH where you can see the ISB officers' feet. So there is some leeway according to the CRL on the IOC. There is some debate whether or not jackboots may also be used. You might want to check out the ISB thread over on the IOC and see what people say about the shoes and the trousers. I can't wear the flared breeches...I'd look like a mushroom.
  24. Nazgul, the shoes are black dress shoes. You can also use black jodhpur boots like those worn by the TX crowd. Unless you want to go the flared breeches route which means high black dress riding boots.
  25. I can post my story now... Jim that is just what I did with my late father's birthday. 5/3/40 became 4053. I picked that number and was on pins and needles hoping I'd get it. My dad was the one who took me and my sister to see Star Wars back in 1977. It made such an impression on him that after his death when I was going through his journals I discovered he had devoted two full pages to the movie and his impressions of it. So when I went looking for TKID numbers and 5340 was already taken I found 4053. It is close enough, and now I'll always have that number to remind me of my dad who was a closet star wars fan until his death. If he was still alive I'd be putting him in a Vader costume...he was a little tall (6'5") for a stormtrooper. That's the story behind my TKID.
