My opinion of MR stormtrooper helemts is that they are over priced and sub standard. They make really nice blasters and sabers but once again overpriced. Of course tho thats only my opinion. For someone who wants a completed helmet with all the bells and whistles and has no modeling skills its probably the best choice for them. Its easy to get too, if you dont know anybody I saw one at Comic-Con and I wasnt that happy with how it turned out. You know what they should have done was bought Matts SFS CNC sculpt. Then it would have been OVER!!! But they blew it by using the "other" helmet and making adjustments and not using a skilled prop master like "us" here on FISD. I have a friend in LA who met the guy who made the thing. my friend told me he was using a GF and a screen used helmet for his base. they should have Vaccd them in ABS, then they would have something. Star Wars Helmets Posted December 20, 2007 Report Share Posted December 20, 2007 In many respects this is acually a “horses for courses” argument. From a manufacturing process it was not realistic for MR to produce a 100% accurate lid out of ABS in the volumes theyre talking about. From a customer service perspective it would have been a nightmare – since the vast majority of people want a helmet to reflect the attributes of the image they see on screen – rather than what the actual film prop looked like. With that in mind imo MR has made a really nice collectible for the price The base helmet was Jason Joiners Stunt lid, although they also digitally scanned the LFL Hero and used countless photo's to get it as close as they could. The weight of the fiberglass and the fact that you can get "other" better buckets out there just doesn't seem like the MR would be the best choice. I like the look of it, and Jez basically said it best... How many pissed off customers would there be if they received a pulled plastic bucket??? I said this somewhere, but I was working on a TE HDPE bucket when I hosted a armor party. I also had a ANH v2 that wasn't finished. The comments on the TE bucket were... well not the best. Toy came up, cheap, came up, etc... People LOVED the ANH v2. It's just the weight, material, look... I LOVE my TE bucket. I love to talk about.. this is what they were like. If MR produced a screen accurate helmet out of plastic with paint runs... I would NOT want to be in their CS department... not everyone is like us here... Star Wars Helmets Posted December 24, 2007 Report Share Posted December 24, 2007 MR's made the Hero helmet, although the confusion may have been aided by the fact that they use a Stunt as their base mould (since the LFL archive only had the one Hero and LFL were understandably reticent about letting anyone cast it). However they used this Hero helmet n the archives as reference and had a 3D scan of it done also. The MR license ends on 31st Dec, although they are still allowed to fulfill orders until 31st March 08. The original run for Stormtrooper helmets was 2,500 although in the end they cut back on this. They sold out of some while back and in addition it seems that theyve UNDER produced such that 70 people who ordered will not be getting their helmets at all. In addition theyve produced a CHEAP ($120) injected ABS Stunt helmet, initially exclusively for a UK retailer (play.com) which I understand is not too great - however there are no pics circulated as yet. Cheers Jez I think you hit the nail on the head Jez. The target audience for an MR helmet are collectors who may wear it once a year at Halloween but not us troopers. From a business perspective, the qualities desired in a helmet are different, and for what they're trying to achieve they did a good job, though I have to say the frown just looks so wrong, in addition to a few details only us die-hards would notice. azerin[501st] Posted December 24, 2007 Report Share Posted December 24, 2007 I have been following the MR Star Wars helmets for awhile (I have several of the clone helmets) and for the TK helmet I know they made some tweaks between the last prototype and the final shipped version so it might be a little better. On a slightly different note... they weren't able to produce the full run because of the license going poof... so they are having to cancel some peoples orders... both through direct sales and dealers. I have a couple of old Don Post helmets that go great in my collection. The Don Post stormtrooper looks very stupid, but it's one of my favorites. It could also be that LFL wanted a bucket made that would not be recasted by 501st or other costuers. The frown being a little off would keep most from recasting it. Just a thought. MR tried to make it as accurate as they could - given the materials and production processes they had at their disposal. The first prototype helmet they sent me had a really bad frown and that was the first thing I told them to address. secracium Posted December 28, 2007 Report Share Posted December 28, 2007 I got mine in yesterday. It's pretty nice, but there are some definite flaws to it. The biggest thing was the green bubble lenses, but a set of grey lenses were sent so they could be switched out if anyone cared to. It's rather pretty to look at and i really like the heft to the helmet, but i wouldn't troop in it. The lenses fog over really quickly due to the padded insert and also it would just get really hot for the same reason. I'll post pictures if I can. zenwalker Posted January 2, 2008 Report Share Posted January 2, 2008 I have the MR Helmet and it is indeed a very nice collectible, but I would define it as a collectible and not a prop replica. It is definitely not as accurate as an SDS , TE or Gino Helmet for sure. It is a nice interpretation of the original screen-used helmets that an average collector would like. As for die-hard screen accuracy freaks like myself I wished they would have made it closer to the screen helmets. Oh well, it is still a nice helmet to own and I will probably keep mine regardless.
