Anywhere I have snaps, I always use two. Each about 3/4 inches apart. Helps stop any "swivel" issures.

Man, I've been dreaming about that helmet for years!! But you forgot one point--it ALL comes assembled!! Right out of the box it's ready to go!!

Are most of you actually wearing the headset and then putting on your helmet? I found I could not do that. Putting on the tight bucket just ripped the headset off. I finally just cut everything off except the mic and the wire and just mounted it inside my helmet. Seems more effecient to me, but I am using the Memorex wireless unit. I can see how if you have wires going down your neckseal this wouldn't really be a good option.

Surely someone will invalidate it by b!tching about the FX helmet..

Electrical heat shrink temperature
Laspector replied to Laspector's topic in Electronics for Helmets / Blasters
Thanks, guys, for all your information. I will do some testing with all your methods before going to the real thing. -
I am working on my fan system. I've gotten to where I can solder pretty good. I have gotten some electrical heat shrink to put over the connections and am wondering about the heat shrink temperature. Will a blow dryer do it or do I need a heat gun? I have both but am afraid of melting my wires with the heat gun, these wires are so small. Any advice?

I don't know much about that kind of stuff--so is it AA or 9volt that will make them quieter?

Microphone vs. fan placement

I asked this on another thread and no one answered so I will ask it again here--how exactly are you running the PPT wire from you AKER to your hand? Are you going from the unit up and into the collar of the undersuit and then down your arm? Or from the unit down to your waist and then up under the bodysuit (if two piece)? It almost seems like there needs to be a hole in the undersuit somewhere to run the wire. In the chest area or underarm. But I'm sure that would rip your body suit. I'm just trying to eliminate as much excess wires as I can. -
I was in Walmart the other day and I saw these gloves in the automotive section. They are called Gorilla Grip gloves made by a company called Grease Monkey. They look like they are rubber but they are not. They were only about $5.00. As you can see (if I can get this pic posted right) the palm and fingers look close to the rubber gloves but everything else is made of a thin black net-like material. Very comfortable and very flexible. I have not yet trooped with them, but I think they look pretty good. I have not tried to put a PPT switch in them yet. I'm not sure if these are going to replace my Nomex but for as cheap as they were I thought I would get them and share them with you. -------

I am in the process of setting up my wireless AKER/ICOMM system and I have question about these PPT switches--how exactly are you running the wire down your arm from the unit? Under your bodysuit or over? If under the body suit, how are you running the wire from the unit? Do you have to go from the unit up to and inside the collar area, and then down your arm? Or do you go from the unit down to and up under the waist (if two piece bodysuit) and then down your arm? It almost seems like you need to punch a hole in either the underarm or chest area of the bodysuit to run the wire from the unit and down your arm. But I imagine putting a hole in the bodysuit could cause rips. Or are you just running it over your body suit (but under the arm armor)? If done this way, don't you have an open wire exposed where the chest meets the arm? And also at the elbow area between the bicep and forearm pieces?

I agree. I live in the deep south. I use the "nose blocker" method, but I also have two fans pointing up at my face. Without them, trooping where I am is absolute murder. It can be done, but it sure takes some of the fun out of it. So between the fans and the nose foam I usually don't have much of a problem with fogging. I also use anti fog wipes on my lenses before trooping. They can be found in the auto section of Walmart.
-
Also the "nose blocker" works really well. Take a small strip of foam and mount it just under the eyes of the helmet. the foam strip should just rest over the bridge of your nose. This will keep your breath from going back up into the top of the helmet and fogging the lenses.. I have used this since day one and have never had fogging issues.

How much does that Lasik cost?

Yep, that's EXACTLY what I saw at first. I was thinking cows and other nasty things!! I may need help also.....

Well, I fell in love with the helmet back in 1977 when I first saw the movie. On screen I never saw all the bumps and warts. It wasn't until 2006 when I joined the legion that I learned of ear gaps, sides not being the same (wonky), bumps, and all the imperfections. So I actually fell in love with the idealized "perfect" looking helmet. And that is what I want. I love my eFX and MRCE.

Cheap amp. Works great.

Yeah, let us know how it works out. I was going to go the AKER route, I bought the whole schmeer, even a new helmet and lenses and pads and everything. Got into it over $400. Finally was working to get it all installed and just decided it was too much junk to fool with. AKER is too big and has too many components for my taste. I love my old SKULLWORX (I sure wish they still made those). Sometimes simple is just better IMHO. Somebody, somewhere, please start making something like the SKULLWORX again!! PLEASE!! -
The only reason I keep my contact lens prescription is for trooping. It's the only time I ever wear them.

I think it IS worth the trouble.. Good helmet, I like it. Plus it is nice and sturdy and thick. Feels like a "real" helmet, not just a plastic bucket.

Got my boots today [TKboots]
Laspector replied to bigironvault's topic in Boots, Soft Parts, and other Accessories
I'm going to be doing my first troop this weekend with my new "higher up" set of TKboots. I'll let you know how it goes. -
I know how you feel. I had to save for a year before I was finally able to join. I just had to scrounge on every penny. I just put an envelope in a drawer and just added every dollar to it I was able to--whenever I was able to.
