Standard or Premier First Order ANOVOS KIT? Help please!
kman replied to SimpleJedi's topic in TFA Stormtrooper
Definitely no discount. The Anovos TFA gaskets are supposed to be quite good, actually. No way to know (yet) how their leather gloves and boots are going to be. I'd guess decent, though. Should be comparable to IB, but we won't know until they start actually shipping out. -
Stunt was the most common, Hero the least common. (on screen, I'm saying) I don't think I've ever seen an actual trooper count to compare overall raw numbers of troopers onscreen between ANH and ESB.

ScaryGuy building his Anovos kit in the Netherlands
kman replied to ScaryGuy's topic in Build Threads Requireing Maintenance
Congrats on your first troop! It's amazing the effect TKs have on kids (and grownups!) isn't it? So much fun! -
What kind of armor is this? Those don't look like Anovos shins. (That said, they do look like they're built correctly)
-
It is amazing. But bear in mind that while the main pipe is nice and strong aluminum pipe, there are still resin parts that can shatter if you drop it.

Figures. I wasn't going to scan through 45 pages of posts to look the question, so I appreciate the responses. I probably should have read back at least one page, though. *kicks dirt* (although re-reading that post, I'd still prefer an actual "official" explanation... not that it actually matters) Seem silly to me that it wouldn't be listed, under the circumstances. It's reliably approveable, and it sounds like there's nothing untoward or illicit about the armor's lineage, even if he didn't sculpt everything by hand in his own workshop. Regardless, thanks for clearing up the mystery!

LOL Right? To be fair, that's the Kenner Stormtrooper from the 70s. Toys have gotten a lot better now, for the most part. The 6" "Black Series" trooper is pretty darned good, actually. Sadly, the 4" Black Series is kinda wonky. Better than the Kenner toy, sure, but the helmet is BAD.

Coming from a man in his mid-40s, I can assure you're not alone in your childhood dreams coming true with the 501st. Welcome!

It's on the public part of the website.

Yeah, you have to be careful about using toys as an "accurate" reference. Because, ya know...

Is there a reason why WTF (Walt's Trooper Factory) armor is not listed as a vetted vendor on the OP? AFAIK, they do make approvable armor, while FX does not (and yet FX is listed and WTF is not) Just curious, I don't actually have plans to buy another set of armor at this point, but I noticed the omission when I was looking up an email just now.

Depends on exactly what you mean. ALL aluminum will be tough, but DDay can definitely help with the main part (the pipe), including pre-drilled. I've debated getting one of his pipes as a base for a scratch build, myself. Other than the scope bracket, though, most of the other pieces in his kit are resin, I believe, not aluminum. See his sales thread for more info, and PM him for special requests (like buying a pre-drilled pipe alone): http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/topic/28047-phoenix-props-e-11-stormtrooper-blaster-kits-a-new-hope-and-esb/

Just wait until Rogue One hits the screens. TONS of new "canon" variants. All just a couple months before the OT, yet seen nowhere in the OT. *sigh* I'm both excited and highly annoyed at the same time. Here's my take: Thermal Detonators are probably made all over the [star Wars] galaxy by various manufacturers. It's clear civilians have all manner of serious weaponry in this universe, so it's kind of crazy to think that anything that's not highly specialized (and brand new tech) would be made in only one way by only one manufacturer, in the entire galaxy. On the other hand, the Empire's troops are clearly military and held to strict standards of conformance, so any of THEIR thermal detonators would likely all be made to the same Imperial specifications. In the real-world military, you'd need all sort of special permissions to carry a non-standard weapon. So I see no issue with Stormy TDs looking one way, and one carried in from who-knows-where by a third party (non-Imperial issue) would both be TDs, but not look identical. So there.

Need Help With Extending Thighs and Waste Extensions
kman replied to Yiyo's topic in Assembly, Mods, and Painting
I think you need to apply still more. Ladle it on liberally. You need to create a new flat surface from it, so it needs to cover a distance on either side of the seam. Don't worry about the tape (since you'll be sanding it off anyway, and you don't want a sharp line), and just lay down like a 1/2"-3/4" stripe along the seam. -
Need Help With Extending Thighs and Waste Extensions

How thick are the coats you are adding? (both consistency of ABS paste and how much you are applying) How long are you giving the paste to dry before sanding? -
Oh, that? That's not uncommon. As long as you trimming the front evenly, and haven't taken unequal slices off the back, the pieces will work out. They're all fairly close to the same actual size plastic, after all, if you measure them. It's just a question of how they lie once you've glued them. If they're assembled correct, and glued correctly in front, but one is a little more "open" than the other (I think this is the actual issue you're describing), that's where the hot water bath comes into play. See post #106 (on page 6) for a description of the process: http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/topic/35552-kmans-anovos-tk-adventure-build/?p=476998 But basically after the front is glued together, go ahead and attach the back cover strip (outside edge, remember) TAPE the back well to force everything to line up perfectly, so it closes exactly the way you'll be wanting it to. Then you can do a hot water bath, tape and all. Basically you boil water in the biggest container you have (large roasting pan is probably idea, if you have one you can put on the stove, else you can try a large pot of water and just dunk it in two stage, top and bottom). Bring to a boil, turn off the heat for 20-30 seconds so the metal temp stabilizes to the water temp. Dunk the piece for about 30-60 seconds, rotating as needed to submerge it all. Then immediately run it under cold tap water (or better still, ice water) to "set" the new shape. You may even want to do this twice. Then the plastic should relax into this new shape and you won't have problems anymore with one side being more spread open than the other.

Thanks! I took a very small sliver off in the back, only. Can't cut them down much more than that without pinching the shoes, which looks terrible, IMO. I didn't measure any circumferences so I couldn't tell you the size in inches, only that I wrapped it around my leg and that's how it fit best. I couldn't take much off if I wanted to, else it wouldn't fit my leg. I mostly trimmed it to line up the overlap a bit. Post #84 (on page 5) shows where I trimmed them: http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/topic/35552-kmans-anovos-tk-adventure-build/?p=474985 Once it's all sized, then a nice hot water bath massages everything into lining up perfectly.

Yes. The fit of the sniper knee is a bear. But the layout I mentioned is correct. The sniper knee WILL fit.
-
Looks correct.

Congrats, and welcome, brother!

I believe the two legs need to be swapped from how he's wearing them in the photo, otherwise I agree the halves are fine.

Which armor is better for a bigger trooper? Read Here ...
kman replied to ELP's topic in Getting Started - Read this First!
I'm 6'3" 215 lbs and it fits me well. My legs are a hair longer, torso a tad shorter. You'll most likely need to add some shims at the waist to stretch around your gut, if you're built like I am, but that's quite simple. You given your slightly longer torso you might consider cutting the cod and adding a shim strip to extend the torso (also a simple operation, especially since it's hidden behind the belt), otherwise I think you'd be fine. Shims generally go in the back, on each side of the seam connecting the two parts, not in the front. With some elbow grease they can be made fairly invisible. 4" in the biceps, plus the thighs... are you a body builder?
