Captain Cardinal Black Series

Going to be some happy people who built Captain Cardinal costumes, there is now a Black Series figure, depending on the current LMO's this could see a new CRL, then it would be what detachment does it fall under.

Would there be a TFA and a TLJ helmet variant CRL? Since on the book cover it’s a TFA helmet but on the figure it’s a TLJ. Or would the figure’s helmet be considered Non Canon?

It would be up to the LMO's. I believe there are discussions whether a figure is enough reference for a CRL, this has changed from year to year depending on who is in the role, we have seen CRL's made in the past from just a figure so we will have to see.

CRL's are only made when someone has built a costume and seeks approval. There is then the discussion of which detachment will home Cardinal as he would be considered a specialist and not "white armor".

Even if they allow a figure for reference I would say it would be with the helmet that was being worn on the figure EVEN when the helmet does not fit the time period of when it was being worn. Still not enough full reference material from a book ;)

Aren’t the LMO currently considering a CRL for the FO Mountain Trooper, a 6” figure which was exclusively available from Galaxy’s Edge?

Indeed and there is a build and CRL being worked on for that one, it's still listed on the NTLC page https://databank.501st.com/databank/New_to_the_Legion_Costumes_in_Progress But in my mind is not clear enough in detail as well as it is the only reference and does not follow CRL reference requirements

The character must be represented visually by an officially authorized Star Wars publication. Ideally, clear full body front/back/side reference should be available, but can be examined on a case by case basis. Costumes based only on text descriptions cannot be approved. An action figure or statue may be used as supplemental reference, but cannot not be the sole reference. McQuarrie concept characters, and other characters whose only reference exists in concept are open for Legion consideration on a “case-by-case basis”.

As I say ultimately at this stage it's up to the LMO's if they will approve a CRL for a figure and this can change depending on who is in the role, be nice to get this locked down once and for all, it has happened in the past.

For those interested here is the guidelines for new costume approval https://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:CRLGuide

Thanks Glenn - never knew about that list of NTL costumes

It seems like what is an acceptable reference, and not, for a CRL has been a contentious issue for a while, despite the clearly (IMO) documented guidelines.

The problem with the process, if I understand correctly, is you have to build it before they can approve the CRL. Especially with this character who is based on a existing costume. I’d love for them to say, yes, this is is approvable with this helmet, armor cape, etc. Or even just a no, do not proceed. It’s a lot of money and time to go into something that could we could write a CRL for and then build a costume for.

You can always reach out to the LMO's to enquire, never know you may get an answer ;) lmo@501st.com

seriously considering building this one.  Kind of started 2 years ago, but stopped since there was no CRL.  Guess I will need to buy the figure first.

Follow the existing TLJ CRL and make notes as you go for any changes required t suit Cardinal. Then we need to sell it to the LMO's for a green light. Occasionally they are hesitant to allow CRL's off action figures but it has happened in the past.

I have spoken with the LMO's and they are ok with this to go ahead.

There are a few things they would like to see in your thread with regards to research.

1. TFA helmet is what the LMO's are leaning towards as this is a TFA era character that was gone before TLJ (yeah I know Hasbro used the TLJ helmet, but it's a conversation you and I can have)

2. They would like to see research from cross-referencing as cardinal has a description in the book and now the action figure that should take care of any parts that are different from the standard Storm troopers.

Good luck Shawn, I'm looking forward to this build and am here to help you with the CRL.

Like many others, I didn't get a chance to pre-order the figure. I even tried waking up in the middle of the night just before the "release" time with the tiny glimmer of hope that I could snag one and not have to run out, still to no avail. I got up and went to Target before it opened and found there were two people there in front of me. I made nice small talk with both of them just in hopes they wouldn't just horde whatever figures were available. The first guy bolted when the doors opened and managed to scour every toy isle before I got there. He was angry because he said he saw them on Friday, but the register wouldn't allow them to be rung up. What really got him going was there was not a single Target exclusive out on the shelves. He ran off to find a manager who went to the back and after about 10 min she returned with a small cart of all the Target exclusives they had. She asked what you guys are looking for and the first guy pointed at the black series figures and she said grab whatever you want. I looked and saw there were only three Capt. Cardinals. The first guy grabbed all three and my heart just sunk. He immediately turned around and handed one to the second guy and then to me. Faith in humanity restored. What a roller coaster of a morning.

WOW I'm surprised he didn't take all three and run, glad to see there is some kindness left in the world
