I'll like to see your progress. Someone in my garrison is interested in one of these. I've figured most of the right side will be found in plumbing section. A tub overflow for bottom of tube. A toilet float and some ribbed tubing to a water bottle. Can't wait to see what you come up with Shawn.

  • 4 weeks later...

After much research, I have decided to use the following as my backpack base:

It is the one on the right.  I was torn between these 2.  But I felt the one on the left was not thick enough.

I will be posting more pictures shortly of the materials.  Goal is to have this complete in 2 weeks using readily available materials.

Finally getting started on the pack.

My design/build is based on all of the many different pictures of the pack from the game and 1/6 scale figures.

Right Side Tube:

Below represents some of the items I will be using.

20161206_192016_zps8kfolkib.jpg

First, I took the 1.5" SCH 40 PVC Tube at a length of 2 feet (24").

I then proceeded to measure 1.5" from one of the ends.

20161206_200051_001_zpsax707afn.jpg

I cut the 1.5" off the end of the PVC tube:

20161206_200310_zpsnh6uakul.jpg

I then used the below PVC glue

20161206_200355_zpshxypq6wz.jpg

I glued the 1.5" PVC Coupling and the 1.5" cut-off section from the PVC tube, together.

20161206_200439_zpsniczer5y.jpg

I then glued the 1.5" PVC cap to the 1.5" PVC piece to make the top of the right side tube.

20161206_200516_zpspi78gcrs.jpg

Then I took the 1.5" PVC Elbow and glued it to the bottom of the 1.5" PVC Tube:

20161206_200608_zpsoayarfqv.jpg

After the glued dried, I applied the first coat of flat black spray paint.

20161206_211039_zpstmkdslwi.jpg

I will apply 2 more coats to ensure adhesion.

Applied the prime coat of white to the top piece of the right side tube.  I then noticed the writing on the top of the cap and realized that I will need to sand that down.

20161206_205522_zps4805hbxz.jpg

I then took the 1" Fix It Pressure Coupling and applied the first coat of flat black spray paint.  This will be used for the piece above the lower left box.  Not exactly sure what it is for.

20161206_210935_zps2byerqef.jpg

This is it for today.  As I continue, I will update the parts list on the first post.  Also, I may go back and change some things during this process, so if you are building one at the same time, beware, as there is a very good chance this will happen.

Thanks.

Having some difficulty finding the last couple of items.  If anyone has any clue where I can get these, let me know.  See picture below.

To me the Bottom Bulb looks like it could be a float used for a Toilet.  Not sure.

The bottom bulb is a float for a toilet. The large white cylinder could be maybe an aluminum beer bottle or something and maybe the small could be made from a bottle like cold medicine comes in. Just a thought.

I found the exact thing you are looking for, Shawn:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Coast-53016-Toilet-Tank-Float-Ball-/252063867970?hash=item3ab02d6442:g:HOMAAOSwd0BV1jc5

I wonder if one of the game designers was also a plumber, LOL

Lower Left Radio Box:

I am not sure if this is exactly what it is, but based on all of the different pictures, it is something close.

The first picture I am going to show you is my first failure to build this.  So do not build this one.  Just wanted to give you an idea of the trial and error involved.

20161208_063428_zpspmwdz5bq.jpg

As you can tell, that one had some issues.  So started all over again with some different materials.

First, I took a 8" x 8" x 6" Box that I purchased from Hobby Lobby.  I thought the mustaches were a nice touch.  But, since it did not match the pack in the game, I had to cover them.

20161207_212146_zpshgcsrzqw.jpg

20161207_212129_zpszuruosbn.jpg

As you can see, the dimension are not exact.  However, that is how it was labelled.

For the upper right raised up rectangular piece, I used a 0.25in thick black PVC sheet.  It was cut into a rectangle with the following dimensions:

2 1/4in x 3 7/8 in (measurements shown below are before final sanding.

20161207_213020_zpsn1r3bjko.jpg

20161207_213011_zpskj2ascnk.jpg

I then proceeded to cut a thin black pvc sheet into a smaller rectangle (I will list the exact material at a later date, when I am back in my workshop).

Dimensions: Outside- 2 in x 3 in.  I then offset it by 1/2 in and cut out the center.  This created the upper left rectangle on the box.

20161207_213721_zpsxjvf4zgb.jpg

In order to ensure the face of the box was solid, I cut one of the black thin pvc sheets into an 8 in x in 8 square and glued it to the top.  I used magnets to ensure it stayed down:

20161208_205536_zpsbeujo4vg.jpg

I then glued the the 2 in black rubber "Tank to Bowl Gasket" to the bottom right face of the box.  The other components were also glued down.  2 coats of flat black spray paint were applied.  Below is the finished product.  Once I have all of the pieces on the base of the pack, I might make some adjustments to the thickness of the box.  Since this is a work in progress, once I finish, I will go back and add details to this build thread.

20161209_141226_zpskqtimqit.jpg

Next I will be working on the tube like thing that has the toilet bobber on it.

This is a sneak peak at the pack.  Please note, I have not connected any of these parts to the pack or themselves.  This is just a placement test.  Also, not all of the parts are shown here (i.e. tubing).

Once I complete the build in the next day or 2, I will post the how-to pictures.

Top Left Box:

To build this box, I used a 6in x 6in x 6in box from Hobby Lobby.  I did not take many pictures of this one, my apologies.

I first cut the black thin abs sheets into a 6x6 square and glued it to the top.  This is to allow for a durable top, even surface, and good surface to glue to and paint.

I then took some 1/2" wide balsa wood and cut these into the strips for the 3 strips on this box.  I used a water bottle top for the button.  All balsa wood was sanded on the ends to allow for curved ends.  It was then glued onto the top of the box and then painted.

Additional pictures, measurements and instructions will be added.
