Storing and Transporting Armour
themaninthesuitcase replied to TK14677 (501st)'s topic in Hard Armor (General Discussion)
I use a Stanley 50gal job site box because I am too lazy to take the armour apart. It's brilliant but huge. Helmet goes in a motor bike bag just because I want to make sure it's not sat being squashed for any period of time, though it once took a hit in that bag.... Some people use a smaller 120L (about 70L less than the big ones) boxes. I used to but just found the fit a bit more of a faff so got a bigger one. Some use a large suitcase. I need to get one as for some troops the big Stanley is just too big and heavy to get on things like the Tube. -

The 3D designer for a lot of this mentioned this in an older Instagram post. Spoke of "big block molds" for vacuum casting. I of course can't find the comment post I am thinking of but the basics is here: https://www.instagram.com/p/BpCgNhNgI71/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link -
Episode 9 Stormtrooper research (Caution Spoilers Ahead)
themaninthesuitcase replied to Alay's topic in TROS Stormtrooper
The actual raw material for a single cast wouldn’t be too bad (can’t imagine there’s much more than 2 gals in one so maybe 200-300 in resin?) but the setup costs and running costs for mould up keep would be pretty outrageous. Also it assumes you have a good starting point to mould from, and you’d want to keep it around as moulds expire and need replacing. Maybe you you could replicate the injection process with syringes but the volumes would probably be a bit large for that. Really you need someone who knows what they are doing so you don’t waste money on badly designed moulds, short life moulds and poor castings. Material choice could be made with a few small scale tests before buying a bigger batch of something. -
CableGuy’s HDPE ANH Stunt helmet (DA PROPS)

Could be a paint reaction too, some paints don't play well in certain orders and the paint will react. Generally I always try run a test piece when using new paints or layering using differing brands I've not used before. -
This is a close up of a ROTK which should give you a good idea what you're looking for: Rogue One Stormtrooper Reference CE 2016 by Christopher Pearson, on Flickr If you click through you'll be able to zoom right in on the detail.

Does no one own a decent camera anymore? Most the images I've seen aren't exactly the best quality. -
I measured mine off of the casting, if you've put stuff slightly off then any measurements we give you will be off.

Thanks Brian, amazing to see just how many different movies/shows you were able to work on. Do you have any favourites from the non Star Wars stuff?

Recaster Alert: ! has recast my R1TK
themaninthesuitcase replied to jimmiroquai's topic in Hard Armor (General Discussion)
It shouldn't matter who made the armour so long as it is accurate and not of poor definition. Garrisons shouldn't be shunning you based on the kit you purchased even if it's less than ideal/a recast. -
The pricing on the 850 seems in the "too good to be true" realm. The pulls in the photo look a bit soft (lacking in detail) in a few areas too. Jim is a commonly used kit, uses a semi flexible fibreglass material. They tend to need a fair bit of prep work before painting but can give excellent results with some elbow grease.

Me too, I was looking at how I could scrounge up the money but the unknown on the shipping was just a step too far. Glad I dodged that one now. -
[25] Themaninthesuitcase Troop Diary
themaninthesuitcase replied to themaninthesuitcase's topic in Field Training Exercises
Troop #16 - 22 June 2019 - Heros And Villians Hemel Hempstead (approx 4 hours in armour) So I've not trooped in *checks watch* 7 months but I was out today with Gary as Batman (part of our Reel Icons program). My wife came along to spot us, she's not a legion member but we have an associate member scheme that allows partners/close family to join us and help out by spotting. Not a huge fancy troop but we were busy and the time went quickly. Lots of small kids today, more than I am used to and I may have stepped on a few! Not overly a lot to report but it was an enjoyable troop and a nice ease back in after a busy few months for me. -
The oldest posts in that section are from 2007 so it's been around a while. I believe the permissions were updated recently so that non-501st members can see it exists but can't see what's inside.

One would hope they are going to take some of the sweet sweet Disney money to finally give everyone their kits. Or, you know, not. -
“Hero” hand guard - who makes it?

I think that Imperial Supply Depot might do them but I'm not 100% on that. Try @troopermaster as well. -
What's With This?
themaninthesuitcase replied to OneStrangeCyka's topic in Hard Armor (General Discussion)
It actually looks like a pretty decent option for a Rogue One E-11 blaster. The base is right and the cylinders look reasonably accurate, being made directly from an air soft weapon might be an issue and it will be heavy. But yeah not the right blaster for an Original Trilogy trooper. -

Just a brief update, I'm adding a small margin to some of the items on my Shapeways store. Nothing huge, I'm going to round up to the nearest 50c, and the few extra $ every so often would allow me a to treat my self to some free postage every so often! I had a quick look at the sales and there's over 65 of the cylinders out there now which is pretty cool! -
What IPA does depends a lot on the strength. At around 70% it's a great cleaner. At 99.9% it will happily strip paint.

There's many reasons, fibreglass isn't an idea choice, it's a re-cast and it's not very accurate at all. Really I can't recommend it at all. Reading the threads above will give you a much more helpful idea of what to look for.
