  1. I built a system that combines a 2-way radio, a ROM FX Pro and controls it all from my wrist gauntlet wirelessly. I have a reciever that is just 4 remote controlled relays. The relays trigger my ROM FX Sound FX and the PTT button on my radio. I took the remote apart and used UK's idea of the Reed switch and put 3 of those in my left gauntlet (sound 1, sound 2 and PTT) and one runs to a switch on my left middle finger for my blaster sound fx. I have a magnet, in my glove on my right index finger, that allows me to trigger the reed switches. I did my first event with it last weekend. I think it was pretty successful. I am working on three more for guys in my garrison this weekend. I will try to take video with my camera and show it off.
  2. I have had a set of Nomex flight gloves for about a year and a half and they are all pilled. I need to replace them with something more durable but comfortable. Chemical gloves may be accurate but sound uncomfortable. Suggestions?
  3. Not nearly that decorated but functional. ------------

  5. Can someone give me the contact information for RT?
  6. As stated in my PM, my best guess without seeing them is 2750694 or 2750693. If I am wrong, fortunitly you are only out 1.5 pounds. Be sure to let us know when you get them. You will probably need to bend the metal prongs down to make it fit in the battery holder. I had to do that on mine too.
  7. Pretty much what everyone else has said. • mark the center of the area you want to cut out and use a center punch. • drill a small hole where you punched and incrementally drill larger holes until you have used the biggest bit you can safely use. • use a dremel on low speed with a multi-cutting bit (allows you to cut side to side) to get as close to the corners as you can. • use a hobby file set to square the edges off. A really sharp exacto knife is helpful to but be VERY careful. ----- Go slow and be patient. It takes me a few hours to get a helmet frown cut out. But it is worth the time.
  8. 3 columns if you are holding your ab plate in front of you. ------------- 1st column Grey Grey Grey Blue 2nd Column Blue 3rd Column Grey Grey Grey Blue Not sure if these are still offered by someone else but I also make these. I took the measurements off a set of TE armor and spend weeks hunting down an item to match. I paint them according to screen accurate colors. They use the screw post and actually screw together with a rubber washer. NO GLUE REQUIRED. The ab buttons on the deployment requirements are off my armor and you will recieve the same type set. I offer them in Blue/Grey and all Black. $12 shipped to the US. Contact me for outside the US. NOTE: The instructions on my site mention glue. That is out of date and I haven't had time to update my instructions. I will try to remember to do that tonight. ------------
  9. It didn't yellow from the sun or stains. The ABS plastic was never a pure white. It has just a slight yellow hugh to it. You could really tell when my CA Boots were brand new that the armor wasn't perfectly white but when the vinal started yellowing it matched.
  10. You can see how I have my helmet fans in my helmet here: -------- I would definitly put your ROM FX in something with as much as we sweat sometimes. My ROM FX acts really weird too when the battery is low. I have my ROM FX in a project box on my chest. This allows me to turn it all the way up without any feedback problems. It also allows me to add accessories to the ROM FX including a remote to control the ROM FX Pro sound fx and 2-way radio. I never would have fit all this in my helmet and wear it comfortably. I don't have a tutorial on the ROM FX/Remote/2-way radio set-up and I doubt I ever will. It is too much to explain. I am planning on doing an upgrade to my set up by adding a Reed Switch. This would allow me to get rid of the remote in my hand. Basically you sew a little magnet in your glove and when you want to trigger a sound effect(or switch to your radio) you place the magnet over a predesignated area of your armor. This could be your ear piece (for your radio) or your gauntlet (for the sound effect). So many projects so little time.
  11. My FX kit isn't perfectly white. It has just a slight yellow tint in the plastic that was used. I am concerned that, if I replace my helmet, my head will be a glowing white and my armor will look off.
  12. Sorry if I mislead on this. I am coordinating our Garrison with Borders Bookstore who will play host to Zahn's book signing. I am not in direct contact with Mr. Zahn.
  13. I am the event coordinator for our garrison volunteering for Timothy Zahn's book signing coming to Plano Texas. 2/7. Let me know if need something.
  14. I will be looking to replace my FX helmet some time this year with something smaller and hopefully lighter. I haven't tried on the other armor but being 6' 2" I wish some things were even longer than they are on the FX. Namely the bicep and thighs. I don't know that another kit would cover me properly.
  15. This is the headset I use (the one in my Avatar). I have tried 4 others fancier ones but I keep coming back to this one because the mic is on a heavy duty wire that allows me to get the mic right up to my mouth making me loud and clear. It wraps around the back of my head so it works with my bucket on and the earpiece doesn't interfer with hearing around me. I wear it "freestyle" so I don't have to have my bucket on to use my 2-way radio. Three of us in Star Garrison use this headset because we can't find anything better and it is $20. Just remember, I keep all my electronics in my chest/back. In my opinion that is the best place to put them for maximum volume and weight distribution. This type of headset might not be the best for a helmet mounted system. ----------
  16. My Set up (not in my bucket to maximize volume) ROM FX Pro - $260 (hands down the best value and quality. Comes with everything) Headset - $20 2-way radio - $45 Remote/Receiver for ROM FX sounds and switch for 2-way - $30 DC Blower Fans - $5 each (bought 2) Battery holders - 5x $1.50 each
  17. Originally, I built this system using three 9V batteries and the system lasted about four hours. It got too expensive to changed out 9Vs for every event so I switched to AAs (this tutorial) and so far I have done three 4 hr troops and I am still on my first set of batteries.
  18. They are pretty quiet. These fans are great because they blow air up into the helmet instead of straight at you. The back of the fan is just solid plastic so they are also easier to mount. I put a little stand I made from styrene under them so I can turn them 45? and pivet them up and down. I should probably added that to my tutorial.
  19. Helmet Fan Tutorial Added. ------
  20. You can buy sheets of Styrene at hobby stores. I bought mine for adding snaps/rivets at Hobby Town. -----------
  21. The honest answer is I started off putting together an X-Wing pilot for my company's halloween party. Once it was done, I put it on and asked my wife if I looked like a tough guy and she told me that I will never look tough as long as people can see my baby face. That costume got dropped on e-bay the following Halloween and I made enough to buy a FX kit and all the accessories. Viva la E-bay. Now my wife says I look like a tough guy. Whether they admit it or not... chicks dig the bad guys.
  22. Little late on this topic but I will post anyway. I used these. They are the right size for the belt. I had to flatten the bottom below the clip out with a ball-peen hammer. The holster clips are much wider and more accurate than the thin Banker's Clips. http://www.tandyleather.com/products.asp?number=1239-00 I guess you could just slide them on the belt but I attached mine permanently. http://www.dagobahswamp.com/projects/stormtrooper/belt.asp
  23. These look great. Let me know when you do your next round.
  24. Glad you guys liked my bag. I added a PVC frame to the inside so I can stand it up on its end without my gear shifting. My wife bought my bag from a local Hockey Store for $89(inc. tax). I have seen them online for around $70 but then you gotta ship it. It is big enough to hold all my armor and weapons and a nice repair kit and it has a good set of wheels.
