  1. Congratulations and Welcome! As Mathias said, contact your local GML and get the ball rolling. Once approved and accepted into the 501st, follow these steps: ----------
  2. I would try the Sith Lords Detachment. We have a Revan in the Canadian Garrison and it looks awesome!
  3. As for the shade of Gray, IMHO it should be the same as ANH teeth, eye drops etc.
  4. Belated Congrats Rob! Great to see another Canuck earn his badge.
  5. Welcome to another exciting issue of the FISD Newsletter! We're almost halfway through the year and well on our way to 300 EI's! This issue is jam-packed, so close the blast-doors, turn the comm-link to "off" and enjoy the ride! In this issue: From The DL Update on Centurion/EIB Programs Update on Attache Program Trooper Fit Program Swag Alert! Brian Muir Q/A Trooper of the Month Field Exercise of the Month The IPM Needs Volunteers! Personell Updates From The DL Troopers Helping Troopers is our unofficial motto and the heart of FISD. This manifests itself in many ways - whether it be helping new members with their questions or else researching and building a new discovery. The other day someone asked me about what it takes to get an FISD Achievement Medal and I posted my complete thoughts here. In summary though, all it takes is a willing and kind heart to share with others for the betterment of the Stormtrooper costuming community. I've been tracking costume counts for some time now and the TK is the only costume in the Legion that has lost members. While there is no single reason why this is so, I do believe that if we want the Stormtrooper to stay in the lead as the backbone of the Legion it behooves everyone of us to help out our fellow troopers - and aspiring troopers - when the opportunity presents itself. Otherwise, we may find ourselves taunted by others as the "costume that formerly was the backbone of the Legion". And who of us wants that? So Troop-on my brothers and sisters - Troop with pride and let's continue with the fine traditions that got us where we are! With unquestioned loyalty, Paul Hoeffer TK-8020 "Daetrin" Detachment Leader Update on Centurion/EIB Programs Badge Update April/May have been good months for new EIB's and Centurion's. 11 Troopers earned their EI Badge and 7 earned Centurion this month, for a record breaking 18 badges in a month!!! We are currently at 171 approved EIB's! 300 EI this year, can we do it?? YES WE CAN!! With Unquestioned Loyalty, Mason Carson TK-4603 "Dashrazor" Deployment Officer Update on Attache Program Greetings Troopers! I’m pleased to report that the Attaché program is already yielding valuable insights as to how the FISD is viewed by the local garrisons. It’s good to know that the FISD is universally considered THE place to be to learn the best tips and tricks in building and upgrading a Legion-quality stormtrooper costume. At the same time, we’ve got some work to do in dispelling some of the notions out there regarding the FISD (for instance, one individual believed you had to be an EI trooper to be an FISD member), and in getting the message out that the FISD is the home of ALL 501st TKs, both current and aspiring, and a welcoming place for anyone who has an interest in the iconic Stormtrooper. But in order to continue to get the message out, we need more Attaches! Internet-based forums are nice for communicating quickly to mass audiences across great distances, but often times a more personal touch is required to get the message across. Old-fashioned face-to-face communications will always have a role to play – hence the importance of the FISD Attaché. If you’re a 501st Stormtrooper and want to make a difference at the grass-roots level, be sure to (1) request full board access here, then (2) sign up to be an attaché here In other news, there have been no significant disciplinary actions taken during the last month. Obviously, that's a good thing. Still, as a reminder please keep in mind the basic tenet of treating others with courtesy, and communicating with fellow members in the same manner in which you would like to be communicated with. Keep in mind that in typical face-to-face communications, approximately 80% of it happens via non-verbal means. Since we don’t have the benefit of seeing each others’ faces and hearing each others’ voices, what you type takes on added importance, and unfortunately can be easily misinterpreted. Quoting the FISD Guidelines, “Take responsibility for how your posts may be interpreted. If you meant it one way, and multiple people interpreted it another, maybe it's not necessarily their fault for reading it wrong. Maybe it's because of how it's written.†Read and heed. Guest Editorial: Brian Muir FISD Intelligence Officer: Pandatrooper / Terry Greetings troopers! This month we are having a short Q&A session with Brian Muir in regards to the design and creation of sculpting the original form for the Stormtrooper armor! What was your primary inspiration for the over-all design of both the helmet and suit? The Stormtroper suit was my 3 dimensional interpretation of Ralph McQuarrie’s concept paintings. It was my task as the sculptor to make his 2D design work as a 3D clay sculpt. (Liz Moore was responsible for sculpting the helmet – again using Ralph McQuarrie’s concept art). Was the original stormtrooper sculpture created standing up? Yes. A plaster cast of an average guy, who I have been told recently was Dennis Plenty (now 78 years old), was produced for me to sculpt the Stormtrooper on. I modelled the suit in clay on the standing figure so I could see the form and lines as it would be seen on screen. Not sure if this has been answered already but how did the thumb print on the bicep come about (obviously made by a thumb! lol) but was it left on intentionally or just not noticed? The thumb print on the inside of the bicep was not in my sculpt. How it came about I don’t know. My thumb fits Vader’s nose but was not used for anything else ‘Star Wars’ lol Was a left and right shoulder bell sculpted or just a single one used for both? Yes I sculpted a left and right shoulder bell to ensure the suit fitted correctly. All the leg and arm pieces were handed (left and right). How close is the final product to your original vision, and if you had it to do all over again would you do anything differently? (I am asking primarily when you saw the final product on screen, was there anything that was changed from your original design that disappointed you? The suit seen on screen is as I sculpted it – except of course for the ‘thumb print’ in the bicep. There were also pieces that were added – ammo belt, knee pieces and shoulder straps – I believe the wooden moulds for these were made by the Elstree Studio carpenters. I wouldn’t have done anything differently as I feel the suit works very well and has stood the test of time – this forum and the interest it generates is proof of it. 9. Hello Troops, Spring is in the air and it seems like the long winter is finally over, apparently the sun is even out on Hoth! This issue is jam packed and the Detachment is bussling, so let's get to it! In this issue: From The DL Update on Centurion/EIB Programs Update on Attache Program From the Recruitment Office Swag Alert! Brian Muir Article Trooper of the Month Field Exercise of the Month Merit Awards! From The DL Staying on target just isn't for X-Wing pilots. The ability to stay focused in the heat and noise of battle is a critical skill for all Imperial Troops, especially Stormtroopers who often fight in close quarters and urban terrain. This month FISD is focused on three main areas: 1. Getting the Centurion program finalized. 2. Getting the Attache program up and running. 3. Keeping the fun in trooping. The Centurion program is more than just an award - it implies solidifying and updating the standards for all trooper costumes we cover and getting the Legion CRLs in sync so that GMLs and line troopers have the most up to date information on what's need to be a Legion approved TK and beyond. FISD staff are very close to having these all done by the end of the month. tkrestonva (Brian) & Novatie (A.C.) are in the thick of getting the Attache program going. This is the first "troopers helping troopers" at a local level program done at a Detachment ever, and I encourage each of you to take a look at it and see how it fits in to your garrison. And for fun - with trooping season getting in high gear we have some great swag in store - patches, coins, trading cards, and more - if you want it we have it! Show your stormtrooper pride this summer. Stormtroopers have long been the backbone of the 501st Legion - these days there are more TK variations to choose from than ever before and many ways to pimp out your kit. Troop proudly this summer folks and show that TK's are still the best in the Legion! With unquestioned loyalty, Paul Hoeffer TK-8020 "Daetrin" Detachment Leader Update on Centurion/EIB Programs Centurion standards are now final for all troopers except Heavy Weapons which is running for one more week - do ensure you hop on the boards and make your choice known. We're also pleased to announce the first three Centurions in the Legion: Locitus : TK-2959 (Mathias Rodstedt) (First ANH Stunt Centurion) Turrican : TK-1355 (Stefan Blatt) (First ESB Centurion) juanma255: TK-3255 (Juan Muñoz) Congratulations to these troopers for leading the way! Centurion tabs are also now available for purchase - $2/each including PP/shipping. For EI: EI tabs are also available for purchase and EI Gold Coins will be available again next month. With Unquestioned Loyalty, Mason Carson TK-4603 "Dashrazor" Deployment Officer Update on Attache Program Greetings Troopers! First of all, I’m happy to see that the new FISD Attaché program has gotten such an enthusiastic response! This new program is key to our larger outreach efforts, and one of the tools which we will use in our effort to encourage the Legion TKs to become active at the FISD. We’ve already had many volunteers, but could always use more. Remember, the goal is to have at least one Attaché per Garrison or Outpost, and there is nothing that says there can’t be multiple Attachés, especially for the larger Garrisons or those Garrisons that are far-flung enough to be broken into squads. There is one important change from the original announcement – Attachés will now have their own area within the Admin section of the forum as opposed to being lumped in with the Photoshop team in the Imperial Propaganda Machine. In fact, the new “Attaché HQ†has already been created, and as soon as the new Attachés are formally appointed this month (which at this point will be everyone who has volunteered so far), the Attaché HQ will be open for business – starting with a Welcome message and a Garrison Tyranus outreach report from myself. On to a more traditional duty of the Provost Marshal – forum discipline. Last month we were forced to take disciplinary action against a brand new member for operating a sockpuppet account, picking a fight with another member, and other undesirable behavior. While this type of thing has (thankfully) been less of a problem over the past several months, I’d like to take this opportunity to ask everyone to review the FISD Guidelines, as well as be aware of the specific rules associated with each subsection. Through all of our efforts, we can make the FISD the welcoming and supportive place we all want it to be. That’s all for now. Trooping season is upon us - my Garrison has at least ten troops scheduled for this month alone! Time to finish up those repairs and upgrades, and hit the field for the glory of the Empire! With Unquestioned Loyalty, Brian Robinson TK-2918 "tkrestonva" Provost Marshal From the Recruitment Office Spring is here, and with it comes many opportunities for trooping in warm weather. For those of us on the East Coast it’s a welcome change of pace from winter troops often plagued by freezing rain. More events in the spring means making sure uniforms are up to snuff and maybe replacing some old and worn-out bits and pieces. Other members are working diligently to finish their suits so they can start trooping and I think you will all agree that based on the number of build threads going on we have many newcomers that will soon be joining the ranks. With the swelling number of EIB recipients and the start of the Centurion program we are seeing new builds heading for EIB right off the bat. So, if you find something on the forums that helped you with your build, bookmark it so you can share it with new members or ask a staff member to sticky it. I have been approving a ton of status requests and many of these are from individuals that have been 501st TKs for some time now, but are only recently joining FISD. Please continue to make these newcomers feel welcome and be ready to share your knowledge in helping members update their suits should they desire to do so. The Attache program will be bringing plenty of new recruits and we should all be excited and ready to see our forum grow. Put your best boot forward and set for fun! With Unquestioned Loyalty, A.C. TK-5597 “NoVaTie†Membership Officer Swag Alert! April showers have brought May patches and coins. You can buy any FISD patch you need and do order now, as there won't be another run until the fall. Fifth anniversary coins are now avaiable for ordering - silver for everyone and gold for those EI who have not already bought one. T-shirts and decals are always open and available anytime. Lastly, now is the perfect time to order your FISD trading cards ahead of summer parade and fall con seasons. Over 35 troopers have taken the plunge and we're coming out with a special FISD card as well. Let the trading begin! Terry / Pandatrooper - FISD Intelligence Officer Special Galactic Guest Editorial Here's this months editorial from our special contributor - Brian Muir! "Although I am now well known for my involvement on Star Wars by sculpting Vader, the Stormtrooper armour, CZ3 and the Death Star Droid, I have a large portfolio of work spanning my 43 year career. Many fans have been surprised to know that I sculpted the Space Jockey in Alien along with the late Peter Voysey. Also I worked on some very prominent pieces that appeared in the very popular Indiana Jones Trilogy, 8 James Bond films, Dark Crystal, 4 Harry Potters and the list goes on. My filmography appears on my website www.brianmuirvadersculptor.com with a selection of photos from some of the films (both screen caps and behind the scenes). It will be updated once the current films have been released. I am fortunate enough to still be working in the film industry and am currently working at Pinewood Studios on 'Dark Shadows' the new Tim Burton film starring Johnny Depp. Tim Burton did make an appearance in the workshop last week and was very pleased with the sculptural work that had been completed. 10. Badge Update April/May have been good months for new EIB's and Centurion's. 5 Troopers earned their Badge this month, Congrats! For EIB TK-4418 from the Nordic Garrison TK-4984 from the Golden Gate Garrison For Centurion TK-2959 from the Nordic Garrison (Special kudos to Mathias for becoming the first approved Centurion!!!) TK-1355 from the German Garrison (first ESB Centurion) TK-3255 from the Spanish Garrison Great job troopers!!! We are currently at 160 approved EIB's! 11. I agree. None of our Garrisons have had any trouble and the folks from Buffalo who come up regularly have no issues either. If we start poking around and asking questions I guarantee you it won't work out favourably for us. Best to let sleeping Rancors lie
  12. That's pretty sweet, tight fit having the Thermal Det and the Backpack. I wonder if they designers just got lazy and couldn't be bothered to take it off seeing as the pack covers it most of the time anyways
  13. Hello Troops and Welcome to April 2011 Newsletter! The 2011 programs are in full swing and we even have an exciting announcement about a special contributor who will be joining us for the next few issues. So, grab a glass of blue milk and pull up a Dewback, it's going to be a wild ride! In this issue: From The DL Update on Centurion/EIB Programs EIB Update Update on Attache Program Swag Alert! Welcome Brian Muir - the Father of Stormtrooper Armor! Trooper of the Month Field Exercise of the Month Intelligence report From The DL Greetings Troops! Another great day to be a stormtrooper. The ANH-Stunt Centurion standards are now final and published, and with that the rest of the Centurion standards are either currently polling for approval or in final discussions. You can check them out here and the det only area for the latest on these programs. But what's really exciting is the attaché program being spearheaded by our very own tkrestonva (Brian R.). As you know while FISD is the largest detachment in the Legion and while we have more Expert Infantryman than some garrisons have members, the vast majority of Legion stormtroopers rarely visit FISD. FISD Attachés will be able to offer that one on one, local outreach to these members that a forum alone cannot achieve. It's the most important program we've ever launched, and I encourage everyone to review it and let us know what you think. There's more in store too - so snag some caf and cakes from the mess hall, kick back, and get the latest TK related news this issue. With unquestioned loyalty, Paul Hoeffer TK-8020 "Daetrin" Detachment Leader Update on Centurion/EIB Programs Please note that the Expert Infantryman requirements for ANH stormtroopers have been updated to allow a side gap of 1/2" or less as being acceptable for EI status. Yup - that may not seem like a lot but gives a little bit of flexibility and remove the need for those who are very close to having them close from having to fit a tiny shim. Centurion requirements for ANH Stunt has been approved which is paving the way for all the other TK variants. ROTJ/TKC/ICN are already polling for final status, and ANH Hero and ESB are now open for discussion. Please check out the relevant FISD threads and let your voice be heard. Also it's with great pride that FISD has finally tallied more Expert Infantryman that MEPD has deployed sandtroopers. Congratulations to TK-4326 (Juan Morales aka BananoPower22) for being the trooper that pushed us over the top. What's the next goal? 300 EI! If every active EI TK helped just one fellow trooper achieve EI status, we can easily get to 300 EI by the end of the year. It sounds high, but is very achievable. What do you get out of it? Karma points of course, but yes we're also considering how best to recognize those who are living the spirit of "Troopers Helping Troopers" and getting more folks to EI status. If you have a preference for what this recognition should look like, please give us a shout out - it's your program after all. With Unquestioned Loyalty, Mason Carson TK-4603 "Dashrazor" Deployment Officer Attaché Program has Launched! Welcome to the FISD Attaché program! We have officially launched and are looking for a few good troopers! What is the FISD Attaché program, you say? Last month's newsletter provided a nice summary of what we're trying to accomplish, but here are some details: Vision: Reach out to the 1800 Legion TK's not part of FISD and get them excited about being a stormtrooper. Give them a reason to shine, and a reason for non-TK's to make their next costume a TK. Give them a reason to call the FISD "home". Mission: Encourage the TKs who are active here to do localized outreach within their individual garrisons, squads, and outposts. Each FISD Attaché will be charged with outreach within their local units in support of the FISD Attaché program’s vision. The staff will provide an initial outreach message, but each attaché will have the flexibility to tailor an outreach program that works best to the local ground conditions. The attaché will also post FISD information relevant to the local unit (newsletter announcements, etc.) and in turn relay relevant information back to staff as part of his/her duties. As a secondary duty, the attaché will serve as a mentor, helping to bring along the costumes of both old and new members, thereby raising the overall Legion TK costume quality level at the grass-roots level. "Just to introduce myself, my name is Brian Muir and I'm now mainly known for sculpting the infamous Darth Vader mask, helmet and armour for the first Star Wars, A New Hope, back in 1976. But I was also responsible for scuplting the Stormtrooper armour (the helmet being sculpted by Liz Moore), Death Star Droid, CZ3 and sharpening the detailing on C3P0. I am the only accredited sculptor in the British Film Industry. When I left school in 1968, I was fortunate enough to be offered an interview by my local careers office for a sculptor's apprenticeship with Assosciated British Picture Corporation - later renamed Elstree Film Studios. After 12 previous candidates being turned down I became 'lucky number 13' and began my 5 year apprenticeship under the resident sculptor, Arthur Healey. I later left the film industry and gained experience working for an architectural company in London. Then in January 1976, I received a call from Arthur asking if I would like to start on a sci-fi film to sculpt some futuristic characters, and that film was Star Wars, A New Hope..................................... One of the most common visual and functional upgrades are the side rivets that appear on the left side of the torso (especially for those that plan to apply for Centurion status and have the highest level of detail). I later left the film industry and gained experience working for an architectural company in London. Then in January 1976, I received a call from Arthur asking if I would like to start on a sci-fi film to sculpt some futuristic characters, and that film was Star Wars, A New Hope..................................... Thanks for your wonderful introduction, Brian! Trooper of the Month This month's award goes to TK-4326 "BananoPower22" for being the 156th Trooper to get their badge and push us beyond the MEPD. Congrats Juan! Field Exercise of the Month This month we're doing a general shout out to TK-8555 "Hawkeye" and the Malaysia-Brunei Outpost for a phenomenal THREE Troops in the Month of March to raise money for Tsunami/Earthquake relief in Japan. They managed to raise an astounding $3,421 for the effort! Great job Troops, you make us all proud! Intelligence report Greetings troopers! The weather is starting to get better and spring and summer is just around the corner. That means more troops and events to attend! To make sure you're in tip top shape, here's a few tips to ensure that you're looking sharp when you're on duty. Adjustable torso strapping Firebladejedi shows an us option to the screen used strapping. He uses adjustable straps to connect the chest to the ab plate, to allow some flexibility and movement, with without allowing the chest to hinge outwards. http://forum.whitear...showtopic=14980 ATA ABS helmet build With the newly released ATA ABS helmet, comes a new build. Not just any build, but the very first ATA ABS helmet pulled! This helmet now belongs to Daetrin / Paul. I used this opportunity to chronicle the build so that anyone who is building a helmet can follow along with the photos and descriptions. http://forum.whitear...showtopic=14806 How to install a lens in your helmet One of the easiest installs you can do, but also one of the easiest you can mess up. If done incorrectly - you can have an ill fitting lens. TK4510 shares his tips. http://forum.whitear...showtopic=14974 Split rivets / brads Many troopers have been trying to upgrade to the more screen accurate strapping methods. For years, people have been using a variety of pop rivets, jeans snaps, etc. They are now believed to be common "brads" that can be sourced from office supply stores. One of the most common visual and functional upgrades are the side rivets that appear on the left side of the torso (especially for those that plan to apply for Centurion status and have the highest level of detail). Here's a few threads discussing their uses. http://forum.whitear...ndpost&p=182753 http://forum.whitear...ndpost&p=177111 Terry Chui TK-2886 "Pandatrooper" Intelligence Officer With Unquestioned Loyalty, That's it for this month Troops. 16. Hahah, patience, you must learn patience! The good thing about E-6000 is that it's flexible, so it will give a bit as you move, and can be generally be undone, so no catastrophic glueing fails You could try super-glue, but once you start down the path to the darkside forever will it control your destiny!

Every event I go to someone remarks to me how useful it is to keep them abreast of what's happening. And this is just the beginning of the year. Attaché Program Another brand new program for 2011, the FISD is looking for active Detachment Members to be the official representative of the FISD to their Garrison, as part of our overall outreach effort to the approximately 1800 Legion TKs who are not active with the FISD. The primary objective of the Attaché program are to raise the level of FISD awareness legion-wide and by doing so, increase Detachment involvement. The secondary objective is to provide a "boots on the ground" level of insight into the wants and needs of the Legion TKs (both current and prospective) who dont't frequent the FISD, so that the detachment may better serve their needs. Finally, by working with the members of their local Garrison, offering advice and best practices as well as promoting the FISD as the definitive resource for all things TK, the program will contribute to the elevation of the costuming standards of the Legion Stormtrooper Corps. Currently in development, the Command Staff is working on the final tweaks and will begin recruiting attachés next month. If you're interested or looking for more information on the program - stay tuned! Breaking news on the EIB Requirements for ROTJ/TKC/ICN Given the latest high-definition screen shots from the games, new details have emerged that give us reason to reset the costume requirements for ROTJ/TKC/ICN. Interested? Come join the discussion! Poll to approve/reject will start after a week's Q&A. From the Comm Well, here we are in March, and already I feel like we’ve forgotten what our purpose is here on the FISD. We are less than three months into the year, and our shiny new motto, “Set for Fun,†is broken and bleeding by the wayside, to say nothing of the mockery that “Unquestioned Loyalty,†and “Troopers Helping Troopers,†has become. There has been infighting, arrogance, deceitful dealings, fraud, and unwillingness to answer reasonable questions. We have lost long-standing members, and seen what is tantamount to a split in the TK world. What happened? Is it even possible to get back on track? The answer to that question is a resounding “Yes!†but it will take a substantial amount of work and determination from all of us. The attitude and mindset of this board cannot simply be a matter of direction from a handful of people. The staff here, as much as they might want to, cannot and should not direct members in their comments more than is required by simple appropriate content moderation. Thus it falls to all of you, the FISD troopers, to make this board what you want it to be. The “Set for Fun†motto is a great one, because it reminds us that this is supposed to be FUN! Remember when you first got your armor…how excited you were? Let’s recapture that! If we work together to better our knowledge, keep the board fun, and help out new members, as well as collaborating on projects, I think we’ll see a lot of the stress go away. Remember that typing can be imprecise…be extra careful not to offend people with your comments. Be honest, but communicate with troopers in a way that you would want to be talked with. One of our best qualities here on the FISD is that we don’t see members making rude comments to new folks, something is fairly common on other boards. “Unquestioned Loyalty†is important to remember as well…we need to stick together on this, and ultimately any issue. The staff will lead the way, with guys like Mason helping every trooper he can, and Brian watching to make sure that things stay friendly, but we have to take the lead. Don’t tolerate the divisive attitudes that we’ve been seeing...if nothing else, don’t fuel the offending thread! Loyalty is one of the most important character qualities that we can develop, and one that I hope you can see within the leadership here on the FISD. I’m really looking forward to the rest of this year. We have a solid staff, good plan, and plenty of new TK-related discoveries in the works, to say nothing of all the new programs and merch that are being rolled out, but it can’t be done without the support of every trooper on here. As long as we work together, we can have a great year, and make the FISD a place that tops all of the other detachments with our forthright, honest, and friendly attitude. Carry on.
