I was banging my head against the wall trying to get it open and then I realized I had Velcro covering the only screw.

Same here!

I think I'll start selling these as on option for my customers. I'm sick and tired of these batteries failing so fast. Thanks again for posting this Andrew. I know it's almost 10 years old, but it's a winner.

Thank you Tony.

It seems those that have made the mod themselves have had good success and many years of use with the external battery.

Just purchased my 3rd or 4th battery for mine, time to look into this mod.  I wish regular AA batteries had enough voltage, we literally have 100s if not 1000s of rechargeable AA batteries laying around my work because of a unit we sell/certify that gets new batteries every time & the old ones just get put aside.

Finding the 3.7 AA batteries down under are a lot easier to do than finding original Icomm batteries, I charge every 3 months or so but also keep a spare just in case.

Just wanted to necromance this to say thank you to @Sly11 for the idea. I'm in Sydney and of course could not find the silly battery here without spending crazy money on shipping. I got two of these and we're off to the races, even USB-C rechargeable. I'm grateful I have a backup battery I can troop with, and that I won't have to take it apart when I need to swap.

You guys are the best!

For the iComm battery do-it-yourselfers. I have an update on the battery some might be interested in

I've been testing a 10440 350mAH rechargeable battery with great success. It's about the size of a AAA, greatly reducing the footprint.

The current version iComm has roughly a 7.2v mah draw when in use. In layman's terms the smaller battery can sufficient operate the iComm over a full weekend, easily.

If you have all the info on the battery, like possible brands etc, I'd be happy to add your finds as an add-on to the first post Tony.

Battery (Amazon)- JESSPOW 10440 Li-ion Rechargeable Batteries 3.7V 350mAh

I'm sure similar batteries from other manufactures will work, I just haven't tested any others yet. The AAA battery holder with leads are everywhere also. Lastly, I found a wall charger for the battery. Everything is relatively inexpensive.  Don't quote me on the wall charger just yet, I'm still running some tests. Everything else works great so far
