  1. What a great job you did in putting your armor together. I am going to use this thread to put my TX and TE armor together.
  2. Hopefully this is isn't a really stupid question. Here goes .... I have a set of TE armor and need to shim the biceps. Is there a left and right bicep? It looks like it to me. If the anwer is yes, how do I tell which is which?
  3. For my Sociology 101 course, I've been asked to do some research on a subculture of choice. As an avid fan of both the Star Wars movies and Expanded Universe, I felt that the Star wars fan culture was a good chioce. So, this is where you guys come in. I was wondering if any of you would be willing to answer any of the following questions: 1) How long have you been a fan of Star Wars? I remember seeing the trailer in December 1976 with my mom. I saw ANH the summer of 1977. I was a member of the original Star Wars fan club. 2) What first made you a fan of the franchise/ I have always loved science fiction. Before Star Wars the last great SciFi movie for me was 2001. The Star Wars story and special effects are wonderful. It was the story, the music and seeing that Star Destroyer coming across the scene in ANH. I was hooked and the addiction is legal. 3) What got you into costuming? Going to CIV and talking to members of the 501st. 4) What function does the Internet play in being a fan? Purchasing goodies, getting tips on assembling and modifying armor, talking to others who have the same interest, expanding one's knowledge base, acquiring new skills - I can rivet now!
  4. Telling a cop or firefighter to stay on the sidelines is like telling an eagle it can't soar on the thermals. Let your body and mind tell you when they are ready to go back into action. Do not rush the healing process. Be good to yourself and take care.
  5. These are the steps I finally used and they worked really well: (1) make sure to put blue painters tape or masking tape flush on all the seams, top and bottom. (2) place an even coating of glue on the seam, using a wooden coffee stirrer to get the layer evenly distributed (3) put the pieces together, clamping where I can (4) place one arm under piece and place your fingers on the seam (5) use a can of Lysol, paint etc. as a rolling pin, rolling the can over the seam and using your fingers as leverage to keep the pieces together. It is best to have your fingers moving up and down the seam while rolling. (6) takes about five minutes before the glue sets up. Keep tape on seams for at least an hour. (7) there is always one small area which refuses to set up with the glue, I use strips of painters tape to hold these areas down. Steps were developed after getting glue all over my shin pieces and having to sand and paint all four shin pieces. Never happened with the thigh pieces.
  6. I liked the idea of using a garter belt. As a former hockey player, I know heavy duty garters belts are available. So I went to my local hockey gear store and bought a hockey garter belt. At first I was going to use the garters, but after some trail and error decided to cut the elastic garters off. I then sewed a long piece of 1-1/2" wide velco for each thigh piece. The velcro is about eight inches long. I then placed a long piece of 1-1/2 inch wide industrial strengh velco (about three inches long) in the thigh piece starting at the top of the piece. It worked for yesterday's troop and was quite comfortable. I had no feeling of something hanging off my waist. The way I used the velcro strips allows for good weight distribution of the thigh pieces and makes the whole thing adjustable. The elastic garters are going to be recyled for other projects. No waste.
  7. Hey, hey ... how could you let us down? You were doing your job! Do not overdo it. Every cop I know tries to go back to work before they should and many wind up back on the couch in short order. Stay out of drafts as the least little breeze hitting sensitive areas awakens sleeping nerves. The 'get it done' mentality needs to come full circle to yourself. Let your body heal itself.
  8. Geek, dork, nerd ... It all means the same thing. You are not part of the herd. The herd cannot stand those who stand apart from it and will use every known means of sarcasm to rein the individual in. I have never heard the drum beat to which the herd marches. I am not looking for it. Call me a geek, nerd, dork ... find another label and attach it to me. I am an individual and d#$m proud of it! Okay, so I also a little preachy.
  9. Okay children, I graduated from college the same month A New Hope was released ... in May of 1977. I am 51 with my birthday for 2008 yet to come.
  10. Thanks. I have to make some minor adjustments to the armor because I try this.
  11. I'm interested in cutting the ab from the cod piece for the pit stop factor, especially being of the female gender. Excuse my tool ignorance, but (1) how do you get a nice straight line for cutting and (2) what tool do you use to cut? I have FX armor. Tools in my inventory include a dremel and a rotozip. FYI, I found using a cuticle nipper is great for trimming down corners of the armor for a better fit to keep the armor from digging into me. I use the nipper and sandpaper.
  12. In my next life I want to be a computer geek!!! I forgot this in my request for access: http://www.501st.com/members/displaymember...cfm?userID=8680
  13. I hope I am doing this correctly. Access for TK 6368 ... pretty please? http://www.501st.com/members/displaymember...cfm?userID=8680
