  1. Stunning! & I totally agree with SSkunky, I'm sure there's a paying market for this kit! The selector switch solution is genius! But I know you love it when I point out tiny inaccuracies so... The Mastermind domed screw looks brilliant but it isn't the safety - it holds the trigger group in place so should be in the LOCK position (EDIT: just seen that Arnie already caught this) The muzzle screw hex holes are slightly too large (I've mentioned this before & given you dimensions which I'm sure you still have if you wanted to alter them) The thumb tack stock hinge covers look great but are slightly too large In the last photos the stock is sitting slightly low at the muzzle end. Is it locked in place? Teeny tiny nitpicks in an absolutely stunning build! Very glad it's been Stickied & I've got plenty of popcorn left ready for your E11 conversion story!
  2. I can't remember whether all the research Andy19422, Marv & myself did on locating these parts is in this thread. . We did a lot of work but, after contacting many specialists & discovering that the parts probably came from ground based UK military radar equipment from the 1950s/60s, we just couldnt find out what exact unit it was. I'm optimistically still hoping to chance upon an original unit at a miltary fair or through eBay autosearches. If you're wanting to "take up the search baton" & can't find the research in this thread I could send you the collection of emails & messages I've got on the subject. Cheers, Andy
  3. I've just had a look at that scene and I can't see Hengstler Counters on either Luke or Han's blasters. Are you sure that's the scene the photo you've seen came from & that it's Luke's? I don't think Han or Luke ever have a Hengstler during the film. The Tunisian E11 that Han has in the publicity shots has a Hengstler and it probably had the tiny wires & at least one resistor still attached because that's how you can often buy used Hengstlers & the props department probably wouldn't have bothered taking them off.
  4. I'll have to have a look at the film for that screenshot - sounds very useful & I've not seen it. However, the electronics I need to finalise aren't actually those connecting wires - they're the wires & little resistors that run at 90 degrees between the capacitors as seen in this shot. They're visible still attached to the Power Cylinders in at least one E11 photo:
  5. Yeah, no photo I've seen has the plastic casing on the capacitors on so I took mine off. I believe the Power Cylinders on the E11s got painted totally satin black - the photos of them unpainted are from the landspeeder. However they're cool little things and it seems a shame to cover them up & they may not all have got painted so i guess we can do what we want. I'll be painting mine when I've finalised the rear electronics. You're calling them "capilators". I'm not a techie - is this a more precise term than capacitors? If so, where does it come from? Cheers, Andy
  6. I've been looking for a year for the exact caps looking at 6 separate daily ebay autosearches using terms like TCC, metalmite, surplus, military. No luck yet. I believe the ones we're currently using are the exact dimensions but a civilian version whereas the originals were from military equipment so may have been military grade. As has been suggested before, I'd say they're "METALMITE"s with a K tolerance rating (see chart below). I'm not a techie so I don't know what that means... lol Capacitor codes: B = +/- 0.1% C = +/- 0.25 D = +/- 0.5 F = +/- 1% G = +/- 2 J = +/- 5 K = +/- 10% M = +/- 20 Z = +80 to -20% Must be for electrolytics I guess? This is what I read on each cap. Maybe someone has a different photo/higher res version or better eyes than me and can fill in the gaps? Cap 1: ……70’C & ……00’C Cap 2: (hidden because pushed further through backplate) Cap 3: (?) Cap 4: 500 V…… Cap 5: “M…… & K…… Cap 6: ……LA (?) Cap 7: (hidden) Cap 8: (?) Cap 9: (hidden) Cap 10: ……ITE†Cap 11: ……(?) Cap 12: (hidden)
  7. Looking good Andy I don't know if you're thinking of shaping the back plate but if you are I've tweaked my Han templates a bit more & I believe they're now totally screen accurate with screenshots to support each design element (not all shown as I wanted a 1-page guide for simplicity). Here's the latest version. The only thing I haven't finalised is the electronics at the back which no-one ever puts on anyway. Edited 28/7/12: Design plan temporarily removed. PM me if you want a copy. I'll be doing a "Luke & Leia at the chasm" Power Cylinders template soon but that one has 2 capacitors & you've used 3 so that's not the variant you're recreating. Cheers, Andy
  8. An absolute joy to read this, Lucas, as always. You are doing the E11 community (& indeed the whole world!) a huge service with this thread! I also feel you should be awarded some kind of special badge (or hat, if you prefer) for the world's first usage of the word "pimple" as a technical term! It'd be great to see a video of the stock hinge mechanism in action when you get a chance - it looks great! You were concerned that "sharp eyes" might suggest your end cap ring was a little thin. That actually didn't strike me (tho I haven't compared pics) What did strike me was that it's a little more curved than the original - the section that goes through the sling is straight so the sling sits flat against it. I'm sure you've got a photo of it so I'll not post another here unless you need me to. It's been a while so I'd eaten all my popcorn but I've ordered a crate of it for future installments!
  9. I'd ask Doopys for a replacement (you're paying them to ship your goods safely) AND glue it back together - that way you'll have a spare! 2 part epoxy glue definitely works well (I've glued a stock "fork" and end cap ring & they were as strong as new). You should still be able to drill a hole for the wires as Doopy's resin is very easy to drill & structurally sound (I managed to hollow out one of their scopes to fit lenses & it's exactly the same one as you've got there, with the number 3 on) ...but yeah, don't drop any of it - china cups bounce better than this stuff! lol -----------
  10. I think maybe these still screenshots can be misleading, looked at on their own. If you watch the scene you'll see all 3 capacitors are there on the Y-Wing targeting computer (which is what I took these screenshots of, during the Death Star trench attack)
  11. Oo! A fresh Sterling! You're so going to enjoy that! I've never regretted buying mine even though it's a lot of money for something I can't drive, live in or eat! lol Han actually uses 3 different E11s in the Detention Corridor scene. He may use more but I've noticed 3 distinct variations: one with an M38 scope which he fires just before diving into the garbage, one with an M38 with power cylinders back to front (lol!) & a little add-on at the back of the scope (but it's not an A2) (see photo) and one with an M19 scope. There is no continuity at all in what E11 either Han or Luke had at any given point so we can pretty much use our favourite scope shape and find a screenshot that matches up! If I ever get REALLY bored I'll go through the scenes frame by frame, note how many times they switch variation & make a video with screenshots of every change.
  12. Hi Paplooo - Glad you've found it interesting Are you thinking of recreating a particular screen-used E11? Hope you'll be posting pictures! I've had a break from my Power Cylinders project but I'm hoping to finally finish it in the next 2 weeks - pictures of my completed E11 will follow. As you may have guessed from my posts I'm making the variant Han uses in the detention block corridor... complete with 3 rounds of inert ammo as that's the number of live blanks he had in the mag and fires just before diving into the garbage! lol Good luck with your build
  13. If you can add a few dinks & file just the edges of the guards & sight down to nearer 1.6mm no-one will know their main body is thicker. I'd add the dinks first because the metal of the real ones gets squashed with impacts so is thicker than 1.6mm in places. I think you'll have good pics of this in the photo bundle I sent you The mag well doesn't attract my eye as being wrong like the mag itself does & would be a lot harder to redo, wouldn't it. It may not be perfect but it's not shouting (from the pics you've uploaded anyway). What sort of place sells 18 gauge springs that you can "pop out & get easily"? I looked around but couldn't find any that were cheaper than buying an original! lol
  14. Utterly stunning, Lucas!!!! You've absolutely captured the spirit of a Sterling!!! I can tell because I noticed I had the same huge grin on my face looking at your build photos as I do when I look at photos of real Sterlings! That's a first for a repro! It's definitely worth getting/making a different magazine as that one lets down your astonishing work (it's not even quite accurate for an E11). Would a real one be illegal to import to Oz? They have great mechanisms inside! There's one small tweak you could make that would make it almost indistinguishable from a real one. The vent shield, eject port shield & front sight could have a few dinks filed into their outer edges as they look too perfect (& are slightly too thick). That's the only thing I'd feel compelled to do if it was my build. There are a few other tiny, tiny inaccuracies but they aren't as obvious & I don't want to be a nit-picking a**e publicly! lol Great textures on the receiver, grip mount & selector switch! My fav photo is the one on the left here - the bolt (& whole gun!) looks totally convincing! The spring is a little thinner than a genuine one & looks a little shiny & lighter coloured. (Again with the nit-picking but I know you'd rather have the info & then decide whether to do anything about it). Hopefully your work will inspire the rest of us to start/complete our builds rather than demoralize us into thinking we couldn't come close to this quality! lol Thanks so much for all the photos & detailed commentary, Lucas - it's a really enjoyable, inspiring read. I too am sitting with my popcorn waiting for the next installment...
  15. It depends which screen blaster you want to make. Han's Detention Block Blaster had 3 central capacitors and the backplate is more or less straight across. The blaster Luke & Leia have when they swing over the chasm has just 2 central capacitors because the backplate has a semi-circle cut out of it under where the valve socket was. The traditional 2 capacitor design with one on a diagonal is based on one blaster on which I think the capacitors got badly mis-shapen either during making or afterwards Have a close look at my "Han's Detention Block" Power Cylinder templates on page 9 of this thread. The backplate shape needs tweaking & I haven't done it yet but it's very close to 100% screen accurate and it has very clear photos of how the capacitors are attached. You can see they pass through the backplate. There's also a photo of the blaster the 2 capacitor design is based on. Good luck with your build. Please post pics of it for us Andy
  16. This is the only source I know of, as posted with photo earlier in the thread: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220735560903?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Cheers, Andy
  17. Merry Christmas!!! If you're looking for a little extra Star Wars festivity check out this thread: http://whitearmor.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=18041&hl=&fromsearch=1 Hope 2012 is a great one for everyone. Best wishes, Andy
  18. You beat me to it, Danny! (Actually I'd forgotten I was going to post these since I saw them in the summer) I think the Rebel pilot one is brilliant! & I like the R2 too (& there's even an Admiral Ackbar! lol) Here's some more photos of what you can make on the above website link Merry Christmas everyone! -------------
  19. Me neither till LonePigeon (Chris Trevas, of "The Parts Of Star Wars" website) told us in this thread - some really helpful shots of the cylinders, especially on Blu Ray Have fun with your new caps - post us a pic, won't you
  20. I can't get the photo to open or download full size from this thread using IE or FireFox but I'll upload the final version as a pdf when its finished (within the next week, I hope )
  21. Thanks guys Lucas, I can't guarantee the measurements until I've finished, mounted & tweaked the Cylinders but I believe 9.5mm tube is accurate. The end caps I'm using (which also seem accurate, once their length is shortened) are from 15A or 20A BS1361 "consumer fuses" (there's a pic earlier in this thread). I don't know if you'll get them in Australian hardware stores but they're on ebay or I could buy & post you some. The full printing on mine is "Lawson LC15A (or LC20A) BS1361 240V". They're very fiddly to dismantle & alter but I haven't found anything better. Cheers, Andy
  22. Congrats on being (I think) the first person to post photos of the vintage capacitors finished on an E11, Stefan! Good work Just in case anyone thought I'd lost interest in my As-Screen-Accurate-As-Possible Power Cylinders design project here's a summary of my exploration so far. They're as accurate as I can make them from just photos/screen caps. I've been studying Blu Ray screen captures - they do show more detail than the DVDs! Next job is to make them & mount them on my E11 so I can look at them from every angle & tweak the shape as necessary. I can't guarantee that this jpeg will print at life-size - it's just a preview Edited 28/7/12: Design plan temporarily removed. PM me if you want a copy.
  23. No need to worry, Matthias - there are 3 capacitors when you see it from the top view. The 2 gaps where light is shining through are holes either side of the middle (3rd) capacitor. Watch the whole sequence in the movie to see it from all angles I did notice that & I'm not sure what to think of it yet. Why would the prop-makers have bothered cutting all the bolts shorter on the MSE droid? ...or on the landspeeder? It's not like they'd get in the way of anything or look "less sci-fi". Might they have added extra-long bolts to the Y-Wing computers? Why? The difference doesn't make sense to me. :/
  24. Well spotted, Marv! The second one is clearer in this screen cap & looks like it's missing the metal casing in this cockpit. I'm glad it's in the Y-Wing because if it was in the cooler X-Wing I'd be so tempted to start making one from my Hengstler! lol
  25. Yeah, I spotted these as extra verification that the cylinders have bolts on each end & I've still got fingers crossed that the originals will turn up
