Ammo pouch, to dye or to spray?

What has worked best for YOU? Ive talked to a few members that have pointed me towards spray painting ammo pouches black, and just masking off the buttons...and i already have the spray paint handy....and also dye for another project.....but what say YOU?

On canvas pouches? Black liquid RIT dye over the green pouch.

I tried dyeing and it didn't comet black enough. In the end I painted it.

If it's leather, you'll need to ascertain if there's a coating on the leather (waxy, acrylic, PU etc).<br><br>

If not, I use Fiebings edge kote, which covers much better than their regular dyes.<br><br>

If there IS a coating, you'll need to try and remove it with acetone and steel wool.<br><br>

Or just spray them black

I used Tandys new water based leather dye (sprayed it on with an airbrush).
Gives a nice soft finish, not crusty like paint can be sometimes.

Ive heard dying it will start rubbing off on your armor though? This is according to a source, not from personal experience obviously

Not if you set the dye properly.

I did it the lazy way, soaked it in hot salt water for 30 mins then rinsed it, hung dry. It's never faded or rubbed off.

Nope. Soaked in salted water and rinsed afterwards until the water was clear.

I ended up spraying the front of mine and left the back green so the paint didn't rub off on the armor... but look at it this way... its a good way to weather your armor!  =D

thanks for the tips...I purchased 1 8oz bottle of the RIT black dye and a can of black fabric spray....think I might try the spray method first!

I've done both but I settled on using black plasti dip on my canvas ones. It gives it kind of a rubbery coating and it doesn't rub off. I like because it flexes with the fabric so it doesnt flake off. It also colors the thread around the edges whereas the dye did not stick to the thread in my first few attempts.

Rustoleum flat black spray paint is what i used. No flaking, no rubbing off, easy application, and not as messy at all
