  1. You have to keep an eye out when buying pipe in Australia. Electrical conduit is measured as an outside diameter, plumbers pipe is measured as an inside diameter. Exhaust pipe is measured as an inside diameter.

Gauge is a measure of the thickness of the pipe wall. From memory, the smaller the number, the thicker the wall. So, a 1.5" 16 gauge exhaust pipe would have a greater diameter than a 1.5" 20 gauge exhaust pipe, which would have a greater diameter than a 1.5" electrical conduit.

I may have this all wrong, but one way or another, pipe sizes are different, depending on where you buy it.

  2. Lucas, it isn't impossible to get a stirling in Australia, it is just very illegal.

I've not yet looked at the plans, but I've just done some measurements in comparison to what you have posted above.

Mag housing is close enough to 43mm from front to back.

The rear sight is 11mm between the semi circles, and about 16mm outside measurement.

Trigger guard is about 11mm wide.

The trigger sticks out about 29mm, but it is all sorts of curvey, so it is hard to tell where you measure from, and to.

The shieldy things are about 49mm around, but again, you have to do some creative tape measure bending to go around the curve of the barrel.

The cocking handle is 63mm from tip to tip.

I have never owned, touched, nor pulled apart a sterling.

  3. Aloha guys... I'm going to be in the Jervis Bay area the week of the 15th. What are the chances there A) A troop scheduled in the area around that time B) There is someone who owns RT-MOD armor who lives around there?

    Thanks :)

    -Eric

Hi Eric, how long you going to be in Oz?

Jervis Bay is about 2 hours south of me. Sorry mate, we had a troop down that way over the weekend. All of our troops for the next couple of weeks are in Sydney, nothing that far south :(

Don't suppose you will be in Sydney at all?

  4. Unless someone remembers what was written on the can of paint that was used, there is no way to work out what it was.

I've been in the paint industry for 25 years, and all we can ever tell is what it is, not who made it.

30+ year old white gloss enamel paint is 30+ year old white gloss enamel paint is 30+ year old white gloss enamel paint.

  5. When I joined up here ( 4 and a half years ago), it cost me $1200 to get an FX suit to Australia. A year later, it cost me $1500 for a TE2. Now I can get an ATA for about $600. EIB, straight out of the box :)

There is so much info here, and a bunch of folk who are happy to help you out.

    I like it :)

Edit: 4 and a half years ago, I was the first person in my state to get a bucket that wasn't an FX. Now we only have one FX in the Garrison.

  6. Gentlemen, thank you for your replies :)

I dared enter the hallowed domain of a fabric shop today. The ladies looked pityingly at me, and informed me that the pink/red colouration comes from a nylon/bleach chemical reaction. Seems that my strap has some nylon in it, and the red comes from the chlorine destroying the nylon.

Also went to a pharmacy, and spoke to the gentleman behind the counter. Upon telling him what I was doing, he got a nerdish gleam in his eye, and said if I dropped a bit off to him, he would try every chemical he had on it and see if any worked.

I have some awesome fabric paint, and I've given that a go. The khaki colour really likes to bleed through, so it is taking 3 coats to cover it, by which time all the detail of the fabric is hidden.

    More tests to follow.
