On this day, 2021, I received an email from Terrell Reber, who most people know as the person behind ATA. In addition, he was an FISD DL, FISD XO (several times) and an all-around amazing human being. Little did I know that it would be the last time I ever heard from him, as shortly after he contracted and passed away from COVID, as did his wife. I have a ZIB (zero inbox) on my Gmail, or mostly, because I still can't bring myself to delete or even archive that last email from him. I still have the second ATA helmet he ever produced, and it's a cherished part of my collection. Terrell, you are sadly and sorely missed. Your expertise and dignity that you brought to our hobby was second to none. My bucket is off as I raise a glass to you, my friend.2 points

Thanks very much for allowing me in. I'm a new prospective member from Washington, D.C. I've gotten pointed to some good resources here on this forum, and I know I have a lot of reading to do. I'm working on it. I've had a rough experience getting started, first some time ago but mostly over the last six months or so. I made some mistakes when attempting to buy pieces for my first costume; when I first submitted for approval, I was told that there were no modifications that would get me to approval, and I was advised to get a costume that I had no interest in just so I could join a forum and get help. I'm glad that it seems like it's no longer the case that I have to actually be a "member" before anyone can talk to me. I had some very negative and unkind interactions at first, but I'm hoping that was an exception to the rule, and I'm forging ahead regardless. I'm trying to make sure I don't repeat that mistake, so I'm studying up and getting read up on the resources available here before making any purchases this time. I came here for that reason. The forum here is daunting, but I know there's a lot of information housed here. I'm not used to using a medium like this, so I also sought help on the Discord channel, which pointed me back to resources here. I am looking forward to eventually (hopefully and finally) getting engaged with people near me or others I can communicate with in more real-time settings, but I have not had luck with that prior to finding the Discord server.2 points

Wow, thanks! You've made my weekend! To be honest, I was quite self conscious about some of the details you pointed out. I lost a lot of weight last year, which could partially explain things. I'll work on getting this stuff right in my build thread. Stay tuned!2 points

Hello everyone! Just wanted to introduce myself, I’ve been a huge Star Wars fan since I was very young. It has been a dream of mine to have my own Star Wars Costume and join the 501st legion. I am based in Kentucky and have been looking at a garrison to join to start the process of joining the 501st. This has been a bit overwhelming haha. Lots to learn but I’m getting there. After nearly 10 years of dreaming of purchasing my own armor. I just wanted to say a special thanks to @IceStormTK for his wonderful YouTube videos on the RS PropMaster TK Armor. After many countless viewings and dreaming. I have placed my very own commission with RS Prop Masters and ordered The Empire Strikes Back Stormtrooper.1 point

I am glad to have met Terrell on a sunny afternoon in Orlando. It was a gathering of FISD staff and attaches for lunch during Celebration in 2017. He will remain a very highly respected contributor to the detachment and our hobby, and forever remain in our thoughts and hearts. Buckets off in remembrance.1 point

Welcome. My dad and I had bought rubies costumes hoping to get in originally and heard that they weren’t capable for approval. It took a few years, but eventually we made it in with approved armor. The FISD was such a great help for me when I started. You’ll find a solid group here to help along the journey! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

An iPhone speaker? In a blaster? Madness surely? No, and you can blame model train people. I just stole it from them. To an extent a speaker is a speaker is a speaker. There's a few things you need to know about. One is the impedance measured in ohms (Ω) and the other one is wattage. When you drive the speaker most drivers will state what impedance they need, and how many watts they put out. So something like "4-8Ω 3W", which is what's on the driver I am using. You'll also find that most of these will put out more power, and so be louder, at the lower impedance so you want to shoot for 4 if you can. For this one it's 3W at 4ohms and only 1.8 at 8ohms. So with that in mind on to the speaker. I am using a speaker for an iPhone 8 plus, but anything in the iPhone 5-8 range is all similar in size for a give phone class (e.g. normal vs the larger plus models). These came from AliExpress and are quite affordable, I got a 5 pack for £2.93 (with free postage as I made my order over £8 to qualify for choice). I went with the bigger speaker as I have room, and in general bigger is better with speakers. If space is limited get a non-plus speaker and it will be around half the size but volume will probably suffer. The specs on these online are sparse so first job is to work out what impedance these are. Using a multi meter over the 2 contacts (not photos sorry those pins are tiny and needs both hands) and I got about 8.7 ohms. This is DC resistance, which isn't the same as impedance but close enough. 8 ohm speakers. We don't know what wattage they will take but the train people seem to drive them hard, but if yours blows up then sorry no warrantee here. But we want 4ohms for maximum loud from our pew pew so how do we do that. We use 2 speakers, and wire them in parallel. Thanks to physics 2 speakers (resistors) in parallel make a smaller one. I won't cover the maths but simply if you have 2 of the same resistance in parallel you halve the resistance. So our 8 ohm speakers will be one 4 ohm one once wired up. Now on how to do it. If you've got a different speaker, you're on your own but basically join both of + sides together and both of the - sides together. None of of this is marked, so just join them "the same" on each. If you don't it will work but the speakers will be backwards to each other and sound awful and weak (they will be out of phase). This is how I did it: First the speakers have a few bits of plastic sticking out so those where trimmed with a pair of flush cutters. This isn't 100% needed but makes the package tidier. In order to parallel the speakers I decided to "piggy back them". So started by picking one speaker and bending out the contacts so they stuck straight out and so would fit over the side of the lower speaker. I then stacked the speakers. Due to the shape I sandwiched in a bit of 1.5mm HIPS I had lying around to pack out the air gap. With them carefully positioned so that the bent leg touched the unbent leg on the lower speaker, I applied a tiny bit of flux from a flux pen and tack soldered one side, then the same on the other side. Now things where stable I applied a little more solder to make the joint more solid. Care is needed here, these are small pins and you also don't want to cook the speaker by applying too much heat for too long. To attach the leads I pre soldered (aka tinned) both the wire and the connections again with some flux. This means the join is just a case of holding the wire in place and re-heating which makes the whole process far easier, but was still fiddly. I did add a touch more solder but this is probably unnecessary. At this point it's probably wise to test things. Hook it up make sure it works and sounds good. All okay, then you can move on. If not check things like you haven't created a short or melted the speaker by checking the resistance across the speaker if you have a meter, you're looking for something like 4-5 ohms of DC resistance. Things work but are fragile so lets try add some strength. First grab som 2-3mm heat shrink about 2-3cm long and slide it over the leads and slide it up close as you can whilst still being gentle. Ideally use a heat gun to shrink this in a more controlled manor than a lighter. Next we want to glue things in place to further strengthen things. You can use hot glue if you want, but this can be messy so I went with 8 year old E6000 as I had some left and seemed perfect for the job. This looks messy but the E6000 self levelled quickly and looked a lot cleaner. We want to glue the contacts, and also the wire it's self so hopefully there will be no strain on the contacts. Really you should now wait 12 hours or so for the glue to go off, but I am lazy and wanted it done. The final step in adding strength is more heat shrink. I want to say this was in the region of 13mm dia but may have been more like 15mm. I just grabbed some the right size from my stash. Cut a bit the right length to cover the whole assembly and shrink down again. And you're all done. Here is a comparison vs the typical 28mm speaker people generally use in blasters and lightsabres. It's a a little bigger but I think the shape means it will fit inside a blaster a bit easier and be less awkward to mount. It also sounds significantly nicer.1 point

Hi Hanson, and thank you for your EIB application! CRL and EIB Application Requirements: All required photos have been submitted, and on behalf of the entire D.O. staff we are pleased to welcome you to the rank of Expert Infantry. Congratulations! Other-Armor Fit/Assembly; In this area we review observations made by your fellow troopers and the DO team. Some observations may lead to suggestions to improve the overall look of your armor, and please keep in mind that we consider both text (CRL) and pictures (screen caps/reference images) when reviewing submissions. Starting from top, you may want to check if it's possible to lower down a bit . Sometimes it's just a matter of removing some of the top padding . Another , probably just dressing issue to take care of every time you put on your armor is that the zipper of your neck seal is very noticeable and looks to be unbuttoned . Reference Images Looking at your ABS belt, we noticed that te square buttons have too much border. As you can see in the references, they don't look to have it. We are suggesting to remove them, sand the border to get them flat and re-glue. Reference Images This is just simple dressing issue, every time you put on your shins, be sure to lower down to touch the boots ankles Reference Images Centurion Requirements: In this section we prepare you for our highest tier of approval. Because Centurion photos must show more detail than EIB, items pertaining to Level 3 might be seen there and not here and additional photos may be required. We try to point out all that we can from what we are able to clearly see, but the final accuracy is the responsibility of the trooper. Startint from your shoulders CRL L3: There should be a minimal gap between the shoulder armor and the chest/back plates. This looks like a simple strapping issue. shortening the shoulder strap and a bit could reduce the gap. Another trick here is to remove the Shoulder Bell's return edge to allow them to sit close the chest armor. Reference Images CRL L3:Ideally there no gap between the abdomen and kidney armor. Abdominal and Kidney Plate align horizontally at top. A single visible seam line is present. This looks more like another dressing issue. Next time you take the Centurion Photos, ( we hope you will) , be sure to tighten the elastics a little to ensure there's no gap. Reference Images CRL L3: The top of the ABS ammo belt should sit at or just above the bottom of the central and vertical abdomen button panels. Not a big deal brother, your ABS belt alignment looks almost perfect , just a piece of velcro behind the right side to keep it up and you're golden. Reference Images CRL Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size. Your forearms and shins armor is very large compared to your arm and leg size. We absolutely welcome troopers of all different body types, but we do expect that for our highest level of approval, the armor is sized appropriately to the wearer's body. From the front they're quite large . In order to size down forearms, you'd need to carefully remove the cover strips, trim back the pieces some, and re-glue them. A hot water bath may also be helpful in re-shaping the curve. For the shins you could carefully remove the rear cover strip , trim both sides a little more and re-glue the cover strip for closure. Reference Images And that's all Trooper, CONGRATULATIONS AND WELCOME TO EIB RANK We are confident that you're going to do de fixes and continue the next level Trooper. !! You don't need to wait or look for an event specifically for recruiting new members. You can attend any event they are at that is open to the public and chat them up. A lot of the bigger ones will have people on hand specifically to chat with the public and they will be more than happy to talk with you. I can tell you from first hand experience when working at a club table that the day is much more fun when people come up to talk about joining. Bart1 point

While our Expect Infantry and Centurion programs get most of the attention, FISD staff wants to relaunch the Armorer Program (Currently called the Master Armorer Program). What is the Armorer Program you ask? Well, it is a program designed to recognize those troopers that go above and beyond to assist themselves and others in getting costumes built, submitted, and approved. One of the goals of all the detachments in the 501st Legion is to help members build and submit costumes that meet and hopefully exceed the minimum requirements of the Legion’s CRLs. Currently the Master Armorer program has the requirement of helping a minimum of 5 members achieve Expert Infantry status. The member must have spent at least 30min physically helping another member with cutting, gluing, sizing, etc, just because they want to help (no money exchanged). There are 3 levels of the award, FISD Armorer, FISD Senior Armorer and FISD Master Armorer. The new program will add a 4th level at the beginning called the Apprentice Armorer. The point scale will be as follows. 5 points - Apprentice Armorer 10 points - Armorer 20 points - Senior Armorer 30 points - Master Armorer If you love building armorer and love helping fellow members get their costumes built, then this is the program you’ve been searching for. We look forward to awarding more members with this award as we know how much we all love Troopers helping Troopers. More information can be found here Armorer Rocker Patches Rocker patches are now available for the Armorer Program, there is currently just the one patch, and members are eligible to receive two of them once they reach Level 2, "Armorer". More information can be found here Want to setup a "Fire Team? the Fire Team program is completely optional, and is intended to help form a common identity and spirit of camaraderie among 501st Legion Stormtroopers in the same geographic area/garrison that troop together. Fire Teams are not officially recognized by the 501st Legion nor the FISD, although they will be able to access a Fire Team sub-forum on the detachment website. You can find more information here. For those interested here is the original discussion on the creation of Fire teams here With Unquestioned Loyalty Mark Ryner TK-4584 "captsafe66" Fire Team Relations So what exactly are and levels? These programs were designed for those who choose to take their armor above and beyond the minimum requirements for basic 501st Legion approval. It gives you the chance to show a level of dedication and pride that takes your armor closer to being as "screen accurate" as possible, without as much extra work as you may realize! You can find more information on the programs here. For those unaware it is possible to achieve extra awards at Expert Infantry for each additional version costume you have approved, additional awards are not issued with another Expert Infantry number (you are only issued 1 Expert Infantry number) but you will see a star above the award on your profile and the thread title will show [APPROVED] 2nd, [APPROVED] 3rd, [APPROVED] 4th and so on. Multiple EIB award recipients and info here NOTE If you are approved with a "2nd Version" of a particular costume that you are already approved with you do not receive an additional award, there is only 1 award issued for each costume version ie: only 1 x Hero, 1 x Stunt, 1 x HWT, 1 x ESB, 1 x TFA and so on. If you have a second/additional version costume approved you will see "2nd Version" and [APPROVED] added to the thread title, no additional profile stars (more info on profile awards here) For those of you who have a particular issue (or issues) before or after submitting for Expert Infantry / Centurion level approval, in order to get you an answer faster you can now privately contact the entire Deployment Officer team at one time! Questions about fitting, repairs, CRL standards/requirements or anything pertaining to reaching Levels 2 and 3 are not only welcomed, but encouraged. Keep in mind that no question is too small, and that your queries will only be seen by the D.O. Staff. We are here to help in any way we can, so please feel free to send us a message by clicking on this link: @Deployment Officer Team and we will get back to you A.S.A.P.! Hello and welcome to the forum Will! Great to have you here! Sorry to hear that your first impression wasn't as good as you hoped it would be! We are always kind and eager to help our fellow troopers, so you've had an unfortunate start it seems! We won't have that unkind stuff here! Congratulations on taking the first steps on your journey! What costume are you thinking of building first? Original trilogy Stormtrooper (OTTK)? Research is key, that cannot be understated, and it already looks like you are on the right track with that mindset! When you start building or order your kit (pre built or not) you can always create a build thread to get feedback on every little detail, as we have members online pretty much all the time over here, things should move on pretty smoothly!1 point

Decided to get some painting and some minor repairs done today and yesterday on my bucket after doing nothing for a while, feels good to work on it again. My speaker system's audio jack broke so I tried soldering a new one on the end, electricity can flow through it but I must've screwed up the audio connections or something because when plugged in they do nothing, still it was fun learning how to solder and attach different kinds of wires together even if it didn't work, I'll fix that another day. A while ago I painted out all the base black lines on my helmet aside from the ears, and today I masked over them (not sure how thin the black surrounding stripes had to be so I just eyeballed it from the photos gmrhodes13 sent earlier) and added the first light layer of grey, I'll probably only need two layers and then I'll clearcoat it, so far I think it's coming along pretty good, painting is fun too. Anyway that's all for today, peace out.1 point

Super excited for these to start coming through as well. Part of me wishes I still kept my order in, but then again I’d have not been a 501st member for 6-7 years longer. Can’t wait for more FOs to be hanging around!1 point
