My ANH to ROTJ build[*TE]

Recommended Posts

Well i finished painting the armor yesterday so now it has to sit and dry for a couple more days before i can assemble it. Most of it came out great except i had one noticable run on the chest of all places which perpexed me since it wasnt even on a vertical surface yet the legs which i painted completely vertical didnt run at all.. <_< . Hopefully the weathering will cover it up.

I finished assembling the helmet finally. It still needs alot of suface prep to get old paint off and get it rdy for paint. Ive done quite a few mods so remember this use to be an ANH.

Things ive done were as follows.

-Clean up the mess of a bucket that it was before you will see alot of bondo in normal places liek the brow but in other places where holes and cracks has to be filled. The green is epoxy putty i used to filled the back of the wholes to provide a base for the bondo. Soo much sanding...

- The clamped the helmet in a vice and squeezed it narrow while i heated it up all over with a heat gun to give it the pinched look.

-I trimmed hte hears down alot to make them thinner and sit close to the bucket.

- I filled the inside of the ears with plastic wood filler and drilled holes on the inde into the ear and i have about 4 screws on each ear going in from the inside to keep them firm and flush to the bucket since i cant use screws on the outside because ROTJ didnt have them.

So here it is...

Some painting in progress pics. This is after the second coat of pro enamel. I did one more coat and now its sitting in the garage. Got a little dripping under the right tusk mostly out of sight and some rough patches where i didnt get enough paint under the vocoder but mostly stuff thta cant be seen very well and overall i think it came out good.

Update time.

I wasnt able to assemble last night because my Urban planning professor decided to give us a test. However i hope to finish most of it today with a guarenteed finish date of tommorow in time for comic-con on friday.

Some pics of the helmet soo far and the painted edge trim.

Very cool, can't wait to see it in person at Comic Con! I'll be sporting ESB for Friday and Saturday. We're driving down tonight. My girlfriend and I just finished up the last few things on her Slave Leia! :D

Thanks for the encouragement.

Weathering is finished and everything is fitting right so far.

List of things left to do tommorow.

- Finish Strapping and velcro

- Finish Belt and holster

- Add foam pads to helmet and pieces that need it to prevent twisting or sliding

- Make bubble lenses and glue them in along with hovi mics

Expect a full shot of me in the suit tommorow evening!

Wow the side angle really doesnt show the helmet for its true greatness.

Sorry i havnt thrown up pics as i promised but it might be a little longer if you cant find the numerous number probably on the internet by now.

I had some issues and some thoughts over the course of the con on the armor.

First of all I never once was refered to directly as a ROTJ trooper unless it was brought up in conversation. I actually had 501st members ask if the armor was rubies (i know...) and was called a "disney trooper"

Also had some troubles with the armor itself. The edge trim which was painted seperatly apparently lost its stick in the process and i lost a couple pieces during the con and whats left are falling off.

The bondo on my abb plat got air in it somehow during the application process and has not cracked all the way around and is splitting off.

SO i decided in the course of fixing these mistakes id repaint the armor to a Stormtrooper Commander. Ill have to switch back in the ANH handplates and convert the helmet to an ANH stunt. The armor in the force unleashed is ROTJ so that will remain the same. I will also be repainting the armor semi-gloss with the trim on instead of seperatly so it keeps its stick and isnt soo shiney.

Ouch! What a very unpleasant list of problems.

The most insulting is being questioned as a Rubies suit!

Personally I think you did an amazing job on this and it saddens me to hear it wasn't the greatest public debut.

In regards to converting it to the TK Commander, I am very excited to watch you progress every step of the way!

Good luck : )
