Moving Forward

Anyone who has taken classes on Change Management knows that change happens all the time.  You can ignore change, accept change, or lead change.  Ignore it and be left behind, accept it but be dissatisfied with the results.  Or, lead positive change towards a better future for all.  What are the changes going on at FISD?

A brand new design for FOTK racer shirts has been submitted to the LMBOs for approval and we hope to hear back any day that they are a GO so get your credits lined up and ready to go, as we usually only do these once a year.

A bigger change involves our logo.   The original logo was designed by me and Ed DaSilva, FISD’s first XO, and rendered by Mark Fordham. It’s been unchanged in all that time though has been modified to fit on to patches (if you notice that the banner tops are clipped and “detachment” is truncated to fit on a patch).  A round version was created for circular designs, and of course there is the stepping out trooper design that graced FISD’s first ever merchandise in 2007 (t-shirts and hoodies).

TK-92802 aka Harbinger aka Brien has been hard at work re-creating these so to clean up the details and make them easier to transfer to the web, print, and merchandise.   They have gone through numerous reviews and feedback sessions with the staff and attaches and are looking great.   The question is: where do we go from here?  This is where change management comes in.  We can ignore change and stick with our 12 year old logos that don’t have high digital fidelity and are missing small details, or we can decide that as good as they were when we started it’s time to look forward and embrace the new designs.    We are posting these up for final comment by the greater membership, as we understand that there are strong opinions and passions on both sides.    Brien has been the creative force in creating all new graphics for the forum, and this is the culmination of a tremendous amount of time and effort to bring the best possible to the detachment.  What do the designs look like?  You’ll just have to come to the boards and see!

As one of the people who designed the original logo and has been proudly wearing it for over a decade, and having been in organizations like the Army, scouting, etc. that have strong traditions, I can certainly understand and relate to the thought that the logo that has served for these past 12 years is part of our identity and there is comfort in things unchanging.  Take a look at the new artwork and you’ll see that this is not a revolution but an evolution, and one that I think sets up FISD for success for another decade.

Greetings Troopers

It's hard to believe another month has evaporated and here we are in the November news letter . Where has this year gone!!!

Daetrin mentioned change in his article, it's something we see in everyday life and it's something also going on in the Legion at the moment.

You only need to look at how Disney buying Lucas film changed where and what we could troop, our behavior on troops also under the watchful eye, yes Disney prefer no dancing troopers, go figure!

Merch reforms are also part and parcel of this change, and it';s no secret that they are on the horizon.  Details are still vague, but here is what looks like may transpire.

Currently a group of merchandising officers are working with some members of legion council to structure a complete legion wide format to reign in and better control the merch we all love so much.

It looks like there will be limits on what type of items, quantities and how many runs per year will be permissible, along with a checks and balances format.

As a Detachment that traditionally hasn't produces a vast array of candy, I cant see this impacting the FISD too much, unlike the JRS who have an insane number of seemingly endless items available. They may well be in for quite a shock.

All this being said, the LMBO's have seen a dramatic increase in  approval forms flooding their inbox, which has created quite a backlog. We are currently in the cue with our FO TK race shirt form, so please be patient, we will have a sales thread open as soon as we receive a green light.

Thats all I really have for you this month, troop like you mean it, respect you fellow companions, and we shall see you all again in the December edition.

Greetings Troopers –

This is certainly a busy time of the year for many of us.  Many troops happen for our members between Halloween and throughout the holidays.  Besides having fun and bringing smiles to many faces, one of the exciting effects of the trooping is engaging new recruits and bringing them to the various legion boards.  Often times we don’t think of ourselves as recruiters but it is something that happens by default.  We spark that interest in people who may have had the same dreams as us to become Stormtroopers but they just never knew about the 501st legion or never knew where to start.  As Stormtroopers we want to direct these people to our garrison forums to gain local knowledge but we most certainly want to direct them to the FISD.

As we all know first impressions are lasting impressions.  If a new member comes to our forums we want them to feel at home and to feel comfortable.  I would like to encourage all of our members to head over to the New Member section regularly and just say hello.  It’s amazing how far that simple gesture can go to creating a helpful and friendly environment.  I would also like to remind members that creating a toxic environment can be extremely damaging to our mission.  We are all friends here.  No one should ever feel threatened or harassed.  We are all here for our shared love of Stormtroopers and being a part of the legion.  Let’s embrace each other and share your enthusiasm with new members as well as veteran members.

Even though the majority of our members have been nothing but superb, we have recently had some violations of our Rules and Guidelines.  If the FISD Command Staff hears of any violations, then that member(s) will be dealt with accordingly.  We want to embrace our motto of Troopers Helping Troopers!  I encourage all members to review the FISD Rules and Guidelines.  As always, if anyone needs any assistance from our detachment guards for any reason, please do not hesitate to reach out to Aaron (pyrates), Chris (themaninthesuitcase) or myself for anything!

FISD Rules and Guidelines:

1. No insulting or degrading others armor PERIOD. This is a place of learning and sharing information, and everyone has a different level of commitment. While suggestions for improvement and positive critiques are always welcome, berating or belittling will be meet with harsh consequences.

2. No baiting, flaming, shilling, or trolling. This includes using avatars or signatures to provoke other people.

3. No spamming or "business opportunities."

4. No swearing. Although word filters are active, don't try to get around it.

5. No pornography

6. No politics/religion.

7. No sock puppet accounts.

8. Avatars and signatures: keep them reasonable, and only one signature banner.

9. Confidential information is confidential. Do not transcribe, copy, or otherwise distribute information in private forums to third parties without permission.

10. No crude or threatening behavior. Determination of such will be in the sole judgment of staff.

11. If you get censored or edited, don't jump on the "free speech" bandwagon. Private organizations are not obligated to uphold the First Amendment

12. No rules-lawyering. The decisions of staff are final. Most of the staff are just as expert in rules-lawyering as you are. Obey the spirit of the law even if the letter of the law doesn't expressly specify every possible outcome, permutation or result of an action.

13. No resurrecting old threads that have a time limit like a poll, or an agreement of an opinion already stated. This will not be tolerated. However, if something is very relevant, new, and adds something to the discussion, by all means post it.

14. Take responsibility for how your posts may be interpreted. If you meant it one way, and multiple people interpreted it another, maybe it's not necessarily their fault for reading it wrong. Maybe it's because of how it's written.

Definitions and Other Policies:

Official Stance on Recasting: The FISD as a detachment of the 501st legion falls under the jurisdiction of the legion charter and as such below is the official stance that we must abide by. In regards to recasting the language is as follows;

Council Resolution 1: Legion's Stance on Recasting

Vote completed on 03/13/2006: 35 Yes; 10 No; 3 Abstain

Resolution: The 501st Legion does not condone, support, or encourage re-casting. It is, however, outside of the scope of this club's mission, charter, authority, jurisdiction, and purview to consume our time and energies as a volunteer organization in efforts to prosecute those who, of their own volition, choose to engage in re-casting.

Pornographic Material:  All pornographic, sexually suggestive and sexist material are prohibited. Additionally, do not link to porn or post "Email/PM me for/with porn".

Trolling:  A "troll" refers to a member who does not contribute to discussions in a meaningful way, and may in fact post messages merely for his or her own amusement, or to insult, annoy, provoke, or anger another member or group of members. Trolling is prohibited.

Shilling: "Shilling" refers to the use of the board's resources, membership list, PM system, etc. to communicate in any form on behalf of a banned member. Shilling is prohibited.

Sock Puppeting:  A "sock puppet" refers to an alias being used by a member in order to hide their identity and may be used to make complaints, to insult, annoy, provoke, or anger another member or group of members (see "troll" above). Sock puppeteering is prohibited.

Using a TK number when you are not 501st: There has been a rash of people on 501st detachments claiming 501st members, who are not members, by entering a TK number in their profiles. Anyone who does this will have their account banned. Only 501st members are permitted to use that field in the user's profile, and request 501st access.

Additions and changes to these rules may occur at any time. It is your responsibility to keep up to date on them.

Hello troopers, wow another month has passed and quite a few members have joined the ranks of EIB and Centurion. Congratulations to all the new badge holders, great job!  :th_AnimatedBravoSmiley:

We have quite a few applications currently in process. This is really exciting as we get closer to 1000. If you're armor is 501st approved and you'd like to take the next step in armor accuracy but don't know what the do, feel free to contact any one of the DOs or FISD staff and we'll set you on the right course. The checkered flag is out, you can do it! :dancing-trooper:

At this time I'd like to give a huge shout to my DO brothers Joseph and Daniel for doing a fantastic job while I was on vacation in early October. Many hours are poured into applications trying to help everyone that applies earn those badges. We all know it can be a thankless job at times yet we do it because we love to see each and every applicant achieve their dream. So thank you both for your service to the FISD and the Legion, keep up the great work.  :salute:

In closing we want to thank applicants in advance for their patience as we head into November and December, The holidays add additional pressure on the DO department as we take time off for our families and other events. As always we'll be here to help you along, answer questions and move you though the application process as quickly and painlessly as possible. Your patience is much appreciated during this time.

The FISD is pleased to announce the addition of a new area in the Advanced Tactics forum dedicated to those ready to submit for basic 501st TK approval.

This section will allow future Troopers the opportunity to submit photos of their completed build to be reviewed by the Staff, Imperial Attaches and others in preparation for forwarding it to their GML for approval.  Any and all advice/suggestions given will be specific, constructive, helpful and respectful.

Please note that this program will NOT take the place of your local GML, as Detachments are not chartered for costume approval and can not override a GMLs decision, but is instead a peer review program designed to help you look your best and offer guidance and positive feedback.  You will have the opportunity to ask questions about your completed armor, weapons (if applicable), accessories, etc. and get accurate information from the experts here at the FISD.. the definitive home of TKs worldwide.

For more information on this program, please visit the link here

p1zjAbp.png

Captain Phasma now has a CRL for The Last Jedi that is LMO blessed and GMLs can now approve against. This is excellent news and has been in the works for some time.  A lot of members contributed to it over many months, and it’s great to have it complete.

That leaves just the FN-2187 costume as the last one left to complete that is still in flight.

We continue to make tweaks to existing CRLs every month or so based on GML, member, and attaché feedback.

OK, it happens.  You look at your Legion profile and it shows that your detachment affiliation to FISD is pending, or otherwise incorrect.  Why does this happen, and what is detachment affiliation anyway, and what will FISD do about it?

The answer is that detachment affiliation is only ever used once a year, and for one purpose.  The only time the Legion ever uses it for anything is to determine who can run for DL and who can vote in detachment elections. That's it.  Otherwise it is pretty much ignored and not used for anything.

The process of validating detachment membership is cumbersome and time consuming because people use different email information between their Legion and detachment logins, and that there is no way to bulk update the rosters.  For a small detachment it is not a big deal to do this manually, but for a detachment the size of FISD with hundreds and soon thousands of 501st members, it's impossible.

Fortunately we have technical folk both on FISD and in the Legion web team.  Once a year they take a feed from FISD's database and do a bulk update on the Legion database.  This occurs right before the election cycle starts and is done once per year.

Pro tips:

1) Ensure the email address you use on the Legion & FISD boards are the exact same.

2) Ensure that your FISD profile has the correct TKID.

3) If after the bulk update is complete and your profile is still not updated, and you are 100% sure your info is in sync between the two boards, then ask for to the Legion web team.  They should get feedback on why this isn't working.

4) If all else fails, ping the FISD staff.  Which basically means that we'll simply tell the 501st web team to bulk approve everyone :)

To check detachment affiliation go to the 501st Mb database here then click Your Profile Data.

Hope that answers everyone's questions!

While doing the branding refresh for the website and in order to create versions of our logo/branding to make them easier to transfer to merchandise, it became apparent that the original works we’ve been using haven’t aged overly well in the past 12 years, updated designs have been submitted and a thread for feedback on proposed branding refresh has been posted which you can find here (501st only)

Retail Embargo Lift

For most of the year we are under an embargo from LFL and can not attend retail locations unless prior approval has been given by them. At certain times of the year this embargo is lifted, generally around Blu-Ray / movie releases, May 4th and Force Friday, the recent correspondence from LFL outlines the lift of the embargo:

"While there is currently a retail moratorium on character appearances in effect, it is being lifted for the week of September 24th - 30th for the SOLO Blu-Ray release and then again for the weeks between November 15th - December 31st to celebrate the holiday season. All fans, costumed or otherwise, can participate with retailers of their choice within these windows with the restriction that costumed appearances must not be used in the advertising for the event. Although these store appearances will be treated like an open invite, we’ll leave it to the fan groups to independently organize around these events as they see fit. LFL will not need to approve or coordinate these".

"Please note that retail locations should not include restaurants, bars, or venues with no apparent reason to feature Star Wars characters. If the retail location does not stock Star Wars products you should NOT be attending."

As always there are strict rules, please speak to your Garrison Commanding Officer,  Squad Leader or if you have one Garrison Events Coordinator before organising any event.

*REMEMBER* Always follow your garrison/squad's guidelines when in comes to organising Disney/LFL promotional troops, only command staff can deal direct with LFL.

Serve proudly, ladies and gentlemen, and as Tim (Dark CMF) says:  "Keep doing what it is that got you here"!

Are you an approved TK that spends more time on the boards than the average Trooper?  Do you enjoy using your knowledge to help out future and existing Troopers?  If so, we would like to invite you to join the Imperial Attaché program!

Members of the I.A. team are chosen to help out not only those here on the boards, but on a local level as well.  Our aim is to have at least one in each and every Garrison, Squad and Outpost in the entire legion to be the eyes and ears of the FISD on a local level.

A suggested level of EIB or above is preferred, as part of the duties include assisting those aiming for levels 2 and 3, but is not a requirement.  Being active on the boards on a regular basis , welcoming new members and helping out where you can is, though.

Some of the benefits:

1.  Access to exclusive Attaché merch., including patches, etc.

2.  Having the Imperial Attaché title under your name.

3.  Being a part of the team that welcomes new and prospective members of the FISD.

4.  Being the "go-to" person in your Garrison, Squad or Outpost.

5.  Exclusive access to the Attaché HQ area, Imperial Propaganda Machine (newsletter) and merchandise discussions.

We are currently in need of Attaches in many units, especially International Garrisons/Squads and Outposts.  For more information on this program, please head here and if you should have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at any time.  (Pretzel)

Please join me in welcoming our newest Imperial Attache!

1.  Freddy @Freduster hails from the German Garrison and will be assisting T-Jay in helping local TK Units to look their best ;) We look forward to his contributions.

Attachés? We need YOU!

Fellow Attaches,

Let me first start off in saying THANK YOU for your continued service on the FISD boards. You have all done well on welcoming new members and providing build advice to members making the journey into the White Zone.

As the topic suggests, we need ONE of you to step up! To go above and beyond the call of duty. We need one brave soul to host the next run of FISD racing shirts for the FIRST ORDER!

Is it hard? YUP

Will you get help? Absolutely.

Will hundreds of troopers appreciate your hard work and dedication? You bet.

Will you question why you volunteered? Oh yes. Ask @Alay :laugh1:

But.. It is a rewarding experience, and a journey you will not make alone. If you feel up to the task. PM me or post in this thread here, and I will fill you in on the details.

THANK YOU :salute:

So what exactly are EIB (Expert Infantry Badge) and Centurion levels?

These programs were designed for those who choose to take their armor above and beyond the minimum requirements for basic 501st Legion approval.  It gives you the chance to show a level of dedication and pride that takes your armor closer to being as "screen accurate" as possible, without as much extra work as you may realize!

It also works on giving a better look to the Legion as an entity, and you can bet others will take notice of your hard work.  The 501st has a list of detailed requirements for Basic approval, (level 1), EIB, (level 2) and Centurion, (level 3) which can be found here in the Costume Reference Library, (CRLhttp://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:FISD_CRL

Here are a few of the questions people may be wondering about:

1.  "I am a (tall/short/heavy/thin) Trooper.  Can I still apply?  Of course!  These programs are open and encouraged for all sizes of TKs, as long as the costume is correct and meets the guidelines.  There are many specific build tutorials to every option, as well as a vast network of fellow TKs on the FISD to help you out and offer suggestions.

2.  "How much extra will I have to pay for extra items"?  The cost is actually quite reasonable, considering the few extra supplies you will need, which are listed in the requirements area.  While it may run you a little more to implement these additions to your costume, they will go a long way to improving accuracy.  All needed items can be found for sale on this thread: https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/16-ongoing-sales-project-orders/

While blasters are not required for basic approval, for EIB and Centurion levels they are, and may need upgrades (also listed in the CRL).

3.  "I haven't even got my kit yet, is it too early to start planning"?  Actually, aiming for Centurion is easiest to do right out of the box.

4.  "I have my basic TK approval, can I still get in these programs"?  In a word... absolutely!

5.  "Are there any "perks" to this extra work and cost"?  Besides knowing that you have a great looking set of armor, the 501st and FISD believes you should be deservedly recognized for your achievement(s), and allows you to wear the appropriate embroidered "rocker" badge of rank (available for a very minimum cost) on your shirt, helmet bag, etc., as well as rank decals to put on your armor bin.  You will also have access to select "challenge coin" runs, receive (free) a cool certificate for your new rank, and have your title posted below your name in your FISD signature.  Plus, once you reach these levels, you will have the extra knowledge to help out those who are looking to apply as well.

6.  "Is it hard to apply, and what happens then"?   After basic approval, all you do is make sure your armor is up to the standards set forth in the CRL, post a thread with the required photos in the appropriate area (see below), and wait a bit for the D.O.s (Deployment Officers) to address it. (Hint:  Studying other people's threads before you submit can be a GREAT help).  These are also listed on the main page of the FISD site.  While waiting for approval, you will get some comments from others who will offer suggestions and constructive advice to help you out.  If you should need any changes, the DOs will let you know, so you can adjust accordingly.  Don't be dismayed if you do need changes... it's all for your benefit!   After you are approved for EIB, then you can submit for Centurion.

As many of you are aware, the FISD is currently in our March to 1000 program.  Our goal is to reach the one thousand mark of Troopers who have earned their Expert Infantry Badge, and although we are well on our way to this goal and have just passed the 850 mark!  The amount of approved submissions is increasing (over 80 this year alone) thanks to the dedication of those willing to go the "extra mile" toward screen accuracy.

Here is a brief description of EIB as written by Paul (Daetrin), our founder:

"Expert Infantryman status is not required for members of this detachment. It should be viewed as an optional set of requirements for those who wish to take the accuracy of their costumes to the next level, and be recognized accordingly. We're a costuming club - think of it as an award for costuming excellence and you get the picture.

The requirements will not replace or supersede 501st standards, but only serve as an inspiration for the level of accuracy that can be achieved. The standards are meant to be high but achievable..."

Besides the added pride you will have in your armor, those reaching this level can purchase exclusive EIB gear (patches, decals, coins etc.) and get a free certificate for your accomplishment.  If you are interested or would like more information about the program head here that will help.  You can also contact myself  "Pretzel" or any Imperial Attaché, and we will be more than happy to assist you!
