Pepakura and making a tk!

Recommended Posts

If you want to make one just for fun, go for it, but I have to agree, it would be both expensive, and very difficult to make one that's accurate enough for 501st approval.

Sorry for necro-posting but wanted to see if there is any new thoughts on a pep TK.  SWMBO may not go for buying an ABS kit, but can't complain too much about me playing in the corner with "paper".  I have done pep before so I know what a joy/agonizing pain it can be.  That being said, what specifically about a pep'd TK suit makes it so hard to get 501st approval?

Thanks

Mike

The CRL states:

"The armor parts shall be made from one of these types of materials or like materials: White fiberglass, ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene), HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene), or Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)"

Even so I think it would be hard to be accurate enough to pass with pep. It also sounds like hard to wear.

Sorry!

Eric,

Thanks. Pep is fiberglass though and the above states "like materials" and "white fiberglass". Not trying to be argumentative, I always ask "why" a rule is the way it is. If I go through with this pep build, I'm sure my failure to make 501st standards will be based on my crafting skills (or lack thereof). But being a goal oriented person, I want to know exactly what the standards are I'm trying to achieve (if at all possible).

Thanks

Mike

Taking a guess, I don't believe that Eric was saying it cannot be approved because of the material.  I believe he was simply replying to the last post that guessed it was because of movie accurate materials.

The challenge is making it look accurate enough, I'd imagine. I haven't been around for as long as many of the others here, but I've spent a few minutes at FISD ( ;) ) and I don't believe I've ever been aware of a pep TK being approved or even submitted. Personally, I say that if you'd like to build one anyway, then build it and feel free to submit it and see what happens. As you said, if it fails to meet approval standards, that's a result of crafting.

I have no idea what all of the fiberglass would cost to build it, but I'm sure that if you posted a thread documenting your progress here it would be watched very closely just because of the curiosity factor surrounding it.

If you do build it, I'd follow along. Best of luck with it if you do!
