Silly question: if Mr. Muir is the one who scuplted the armor, and he's available on these boards, has anyone bothered asking him why they were this way? I mean, both for the swoops as well as handplates?

Pssst....it's the left one with the swoop :D

Ā

I should shut up now.

You'll find most of the troopers in the OT wear their bells on any side, so you may well see a trooper with no bells or two. Same with the hand plates too.

Ā

I like the fact they are odd. In fact, I am building up a couple of suits like this at the moment to recreate the screen used look. Not many troopers on screen wear their armour how it was designed to be and to me, that's how a good replica should be too :)

Yes Paul i agree with the oddness of how things were worn in ANH and i luv those touches as you did on my TM 1mm right shin ;)

Oh yeah, they're all over the shop, and falling apart at times.

We tend to look at the hero and promo shots to base our opinions on what they 'should' look like.

Ā

What they actually 'are' like on set with loads of actors who don't care and wardrobe artists who also don't care and understand then become totally different.

Ā

Snowies are the same. Very little is common and they were on screen for about 20 seconds tops :(

Ā

I know what you mean Paul and I like the slopiness of it all.

Ā

Do you agree on the handplates? I've asked Brian, see what he says :)

Ā

EDIT: He's replied......

Hi John,

Ā

I didn't do the handplates on the Stormtroopers.

On the rest of the suit everything was handed ( a left and a right) because of the natural form of the shoulders, arms and legs.

As if a Star Wars fan would be anal lol

Regards

Brian

Bummer :(

Here's a good shot of one of those very straight-looking right handguards ...

Yeah I've seen him too :)

They're the dude that walk behind Vader at the start right?

Do you mean the one in focus at the rear showing the left or the blurry one in front showing his right?

They're both different whichever you mean and they're both making the same hand grip of holding something tubular

2 sets of moulds made possibly?

Ā

I mean the only right hand guard in the picture! :P Yeah him, mate.

Ah ok :)

Ā

I'm going insane here lol. They 100% do not always match and seem to be all over the shop. Much like the bells I'd say.

I've finished a test mould shape thing to show what I mean

Here she blows....

John,

Karin,

Good work. I think you're onto something. The screen cap I posted is the clearest example but to my eyes there are a lot of examples of very straight-edged right handguards.

Karin, when you do the run of latex Stunt guards, I'd like mine like that please! :D

Look at this:

Ā

straighthandguard.jpgA

Ā

Ā

A: right, curved edge, thick, with knuckle indentions. just as we know it

Ā

B: left, straight edge, thinner, less pronounced knuckle identions if at all

Ā

This makes believe that there was a third version, a "straight edge" version and ll were constantly mixed up

Ā

Ā

BUT: Can somebody tell if this image is flipped? If so, there's only a right "straight "edge

Ā

Back to work!

Well looking at his legs, you can make out which side is left and right :) but they're upside down lol

Also look at the one standing up, you can see his left leg is on the right of the picture as we look at it....

Ā

The ammo pack is on the right leg, sniper plate on the left, so the TK on the right as we look at the picture is holding his blaster in his RIGHT hand lol

Ā

phew :)

Ā

Definately agree with you Karin as sometimes my theory doesn't fit but does ona TK standing behind him etc

Leads me to believe at least 3 moulds made

Hero and standard and standard 2 :)

Another possibility: the guards were moulded and then trimmed to fit. Some were left straighter other were trimmed with more of a curve.

Ā

Actually, I dont believe that. It takes too much effort to cut latex that thick. It's quite impossible.

oh, and if you'd trim the curved part straight, the hand guard becomes significantly shorter

Ā

Ā

True. Unless they start out much bigger. Just thinking out loud anyway. Here are some more good shots ...

Ā

How are your shots so crisp? Mine looks like a child been let lose on a pc lol

But I got my point across :)

Ā

John,

I downloaded those screen caps here somewhere. I can't find the link at the moment.
