  1. So. According to the maker :TKUK. This is his sept 2015 version kit.

That I got from him. And he's looking for advice. As to improve kit to get it approved .

Thanks for advice on boots. I will look for new ones. After. I get. Armors finalized and approved.

Looking forward to finally being part of the 501st here in Colorado

I'd hate to rain on your parade but I've seen threads about TKUK and the opinions are it's to be avoided. I'm no expert though, maybe someone else could have a look and shed a light...
  2. Wow....this Anovos stuff is really getting out of hand now. Yes, real events that are happening are horrible, but these really aren't the forums to be talking about that. I can understand that people are excited for their new armor, and are excited to see what will or will not be accepted in to the 501st. But like any armor out there, none are 501st ready, and if a part or two has to be replaced, no big deal really. If that ruins the experience for some people, well, I guess it does then. Then it really doesn't mean it's for the sick children and the community and the charity work like some are saying...

Take a few over excited guys with too much free time.

    Pour insane expectations.

    Add a bit of uncertainety.

Leave it to rest for a few months.

    You get this!!!

  3. ANOVOS should know better. They should've made it with 2 rivets and sent another two with the kit so it can be modified for hero advising the customer of the possibility of ruining the belt with repeated holstering. This is just an asinine issue that should've been caught on the manufacturing level. But that's just my opinion.

They said that 2 rivets didn't pass quality and safety testing. We all have to keep in mind that anyone can buy these, not only 501st members. They need it to look good, they need it to be sturdy and they need it to be safe. Those concerns are more important than screen accuracy for them. Yes, it's a downer for us but for them, it's better than costumer complaints because it broke or God forbid somebody getting hurt because some part of the costume broke.
  4. Actually, from what I understand, the original mold for the detonator panel deteriorated very quickly along the successive pulls and became softer and softer. The RS detonator is one of those soft pulls, when the AP panel is closer to what the first pulls were when the mold was still in good condition.

That's weird, I mean to me they look like two completely different things! But knowing the history of ANH props, it wouldn't be that surprising!!!
  5. One thing is bugging me with this whole Thermal Detonator aka O2 canister thing. I keep reading how it's an abomination, how innacurate it is. Yet, I'm looking at TD from other makers and I'm seeing some VERY different styles...

    Here's an RS:

    f4b7b25a380efab922e76f57db330905.jpg

    And here's an AP:

    ddc04b24476cee836063f11b91c2fb2e.jpg

From what I understand, RS is the absolute best in terms of accuracy, so that would mean that the AP one is innacurate? If so, I hear no talk of it being some kind of monstrosity that shouldn't pass basic approval. I'm not saying it should be the case, it just feels odd like there's a double standard...

  6. I have to say that this thread has been fun to read. Overall it's better not to speculate, but to go on photo evidence. Ok, so the kit looks a little sharp. Parts are being shipped in an inaccurate format. Did we expect anything less?

I purchased 1 full armor kit, and one extra helmet kit to update my own armor, that has aged quite a bit since 2008.

sure will be fun to make up another suit of armor. This time I'm going for dual EIB, and TX at the same time.

I remember when people here said the prototype photos looked too soft. You know what? Maybe they were listening, a bit too hard

Anyway, I'm glad you're not dismissing it as total garbage. I mean, yeah it's no RS but it's no Rubies either. Some modifications required? Yeah, ok I can work with that! I didn't go into this expecting to get a ready to wear, all inclusive, sign here for 501st approval suit. I took the time to learn about the Rebel Legion and the 501st. I knew this included a lot more expenses on the side. I knew that you need to put work into it and that it's part of what makes it great. And I'm looking forward to all of that!

In the end, there are kits for everyone. Like the "Types of armor and where to get them" says, there is no "best" armor, there is the best for you.

Even with vetted makers, I'm looking at TD controls and buttons and it's all over the place really." You've got RS which looks like it walked off the set but you also get some that are more, uh, interesting... That's ok, it's been approved for legion membership.

As far as Anovos is concerned? So yeah, they may have fudged the "sanitize" and "sharpen" buttons a bit too hard. So what? Don't buy it then, plenty of other options out there! Could it be too thin? Maybe but I doubt it, mostly because of their reputation for putting well crafted items for other brands.

As for me, I'm comparing with other kits and I see that the general shape is very similar. It looks the part for sure. It's sharper, it's cleaner but it's still a TK. I have no doubt that once I put it on, 99,999999% percent of people will see a stormtrooper. And the guy next to me, whether is wearing ATA, AP, MTK, RS or even FX, you know what? They'll just see another TK and then they'll freak out like kids, just like I did first time I saw the guys from the 501st.

In the end, we are all in love with the costume we build because we care. Because we choose them, because we've dreamed of them, built them and invested time and money into them. Who am I to tell someone else that my kit is better than his? He has his reason for liking his, I've got my own too! And you know what? My reasons aren't only that it's a good deal, I like that it's cleaner. I like that they went the extra mile to make sure the pieces fit properly.

Thanks Vern, I was staring to get discouraged by all this negativity I read all day. If you think that this is worth building, I guess there's a good chance it won't be that bad after all...

  7. Honestly, I think that the belt and TD issues have been made clear and don't need to be discussed much more. TD will pass basic approval, but will need modification to pass EIB or Centurion. The belt is inaccurate and either needs to be replaced or modified to qualify for any level of approval.

What I'm more worried about are the actual qualities of the armor. We've seen very, very sharp pulls thus far, and my understanding is that that level of detail may cause the thickness and quality of the ABS to plummet. Should we be worried about the armor being too fragile to troop in? At that level of detail (which is sort of unprecedented, as far as I know) are we going to have to worry much about reinforcing our armor? Structural issues are much more important to me than accuracy in this situation. Durability is kind of the biggest deal in terms of trooping (from my understanding) and, as others have said, the kids aren't going to know or care. So let's collectively move on from ragging on the TD and belt and talk about things that could actually be real issues. I certainly don't want thousands of new members to join up with armor that breaks down after the first troop.

Way too early to tell IMO.. You'd need to have the actual WFBSORNTACP armor in you're hands to be able to determine whether or not thickness will be an issue...
  8. I was waiting for that response. I got the same message the last time I commented in this thread. The blind leading the blind.

    Over and out! Move along......

Sorry that you are facing any kind of backlash for sharing your opinion... I, for one, would like to thank you for your explanations. I know nothing about vacuum forming, so I had no idea they were being rough with the pieces.

I guess part of that may just be that vetted makers care and love what they do, while those are being mass produced by people in a Chinese factory for whom this is only a job. I hope it turns out ok, I really do!

  9. lol, echo

Option "B", $30 for a new belt from Kittell

Kittell belts look AMAZING!!! I've done a few costumes, so I'm comfortable using a sewing machine, however, I don't know if I can achieve something this bad @ss! I may end up ordering one of his.

As for the TD clips, I imagine we can fill the gaps with green stuff, paint the holes so they aren't noticeable, assemble the clips correctly and call it a day, no?

  10. What's wrong with the TD? I can see the clips are too far from the end caps and that it's idealized so not all that screen accurate. Anything else?

Right, my thinking was not that the CRL would have to be updated to allow anything, but rather that the CRL might have to be updated to be more specific as to what is unacceptable so that Anovos buyers can modify as needed. That's all I meant. Does the CRL address the problems we see?

Thanks to Eric for reposting the CRL. Looks like it covers what needs to be covered.

  11. I agree with you Aaron, I just wanted to clear a little bit this myth like what ANOVOS sells only stuff cast off from original armors.

That argument doesn't hold. NE armor is a RS recast yet all the lines are sanitized and sharper. The key thing is to look for specific features the RS armor has, such as very distintive shins, forearms, and other things they had to sculpt (or borrow masters from other people) to complete their original armor.

Yeah, I understand what you mean. There are details about RS that are unique to RS, from what I understand, because they had to resculpt some parts that were damaged or missing. We'll have to wait and see to settle that debate once and for all I guess.

I understand recasting is bad, even though Anovos and Disney have the liscence, RS still did their own work and they don't deserve to have that stolen from them. I just hope it's not the case...

Out of curiosity, could it be possible that Anovos had access to the same armor as RS? You know, just a thought...

  12. I don't agree with you on that point. Yes ANOVOS might have had access to the archives, and might have been authorized to take pictures, but I highly doubt they have been able to 3D scan, nor recast anything.

So far, every props they're selling are coming from already established FAN-MADE kits. Yes, even their TFA stormtrooper is a fan made sculpt. To name few, they are working with MonCal, Kevin Weir from ImperialSurplus, and certainly other makers for their molds.

And lastly, ask any experienced guy in Stormtrooper armors, he will tell you that their OT stormtrooper (at least their prototype) has a lot in common with the RS armor.

But of course, they aren't going to advertise about that. Only on their "unprecedented access to Lucasfilm archives". It sounds so much better for customers.

Looking at the newest pictures of the Anovos ab/cod piece side by side with an RS, I have a really hard time believing they recast RS. IMO, they might have similar origins but Anovos has been cleaned up so much that they don't look the same at all. The general shape looks similar but the details, the sharpness and the smoothness of it really makes it it's own thing...

  13. I think it looks really strange and sanitized. Some angles are too sharp or at the wrong angle, and some details are missing. Like the missing dimple in the circle inside the ab box and the cut in the 4-button plate not being deep enough.

I see what you mean. I'm looking at it and an RS side to side and the Anovos looks much sharper and cleaner. It's almost like someone redoing a hand drawn logo using a computer. Everything is a bit square, as you said "sanitized". I'm ok with it for 350$, as long as it meets at least basic approval, looks the part and stands up well for trooping.
  14. David, the family has asked that the photos not be shared without their permission. If you'd like to share my words then of course...feel free to do so. Thanks to everyone who posted above. I was truly honored to help the family and wanted to share my story with my TK brothers and sisters.

This is totally understandable and I respect that for sure. This is a private matter and it must be very sensitive for them. I wouldn't want to cause them any harm however involontary. Thank you for being so generous to him and his family.
