  1. Don't lose heart man, your close, the devil is in the details, your doing great! keep your head up.
  2. mast helmets are a tight fit, you have to kind of "screw" them on to your head. I personally eyeballed it, but I didn't build an AP kit, one of the guys who built one of those will have to chime in, but I don't know what the average measurements are. when I padded my helmet I just padded the top enough to get my eyes lined up with the lenses. its hard to tell you how I would do it without taking a look at the helmet, but generally speaking you can get away with a little bit under where the ears will cover things tack it together with hot glue and go from there. hopefully someone with an AP will hop in soon.
  3. Helmets are actually the most forgiving in regards to the trimming, except the ears. look on the inside of the helmet are there lines where the forming buck stopped? if so that could be helpful when it comes to the ears just go SLOWLY and trim it a little bit at a time and check the fit keep going until you get to the desired look, ears are always the hardest part in my opinion. some gaps between the ear and helmet are ok so don't stress over that. as for the bucket itself you can get some of those split brads for paper and use those to temporarily hold the helmet together so you can see the overall look of the helmet and go from there, I have also heard of people using hot glue to hold things down while they trim. Good Luck.
  4. High Impact PolyStyrene its not glossy like ABS. It can be painted to match, or sometimes it will polish to a gloss but the color is usually not a match to the ABS. I had to shim my thighs as well, there is no set in stone rule to how you do it so long as you come as close as you can to the movie look. the armorer's will have more info, don't lose heart you got this!
  5. Little sand paper and some polish and you will be just fine..
  6. Outstanding! and Congratulations trooper welcome to the ranks!
  7. just remember the grey on the helmet is 1138 if you use testors paints coincidently
  8. From the Detachment Leader Around the Detachment Legion News Troop of the Month Tip of the Month Aloha kakou, As expected the summer makes FISD a pretty quiet place. Between family fun and people trooping their butt off the forum, action is usually reduced to a dull roar. However, the announcement of eFX's fully licensed TK armor at San Diego Comic Con breathed some life into the forums. Check out the forum thread for details behind this new prop replica. I am impressed by the level of detail they put into the kit including the strapping and all the other details that we enjoy. While none of the finer points of TK armor are a mystery, it does make me wonder if the eFX folks are lurking around FISD doing research. Thanks to the often hilarious Southern California Garrison's Endor Party Crashers (EP!C) TK fire team for taking tons of pictures of the prototype licensed suit made from a casting of screen used armor. This is my favorite photo of our very own Echo Rogue, TK-19191, in his RS Props hotness next to the eFX: In the last newsletter I announced that I would give away a special prize to anyone who could provide a side by side comparison of the new NE armor and any known and popular maker such as ATA, RS, TM, TE2, TM/C, or (yes you too Scootch) CAP. Being a tall trooper my curiosity was selfish. I wanted to know how NE was sized. If AM was made for the larger trooper maybe the new NE also filled that niche. As time goes on the FISD mumblings and side conversations about NE have drifted from the subject of size to one of origins. My offer is still out there for someone to take detailed photos and measurements of a NE kit next to well known armor. Entries deemed detailed enough will win a special FISD branded prize from your DL. Get your fancy shmancy DSLR cameras out folks and get to it! I know you people are out there trooping. Please take the time to post troop reports as often as you can. Everyone loves photos of our fellow FISDers out in their natural habitat. Since our last newsletter a few of our fireteams and members have posted about attending area comic cons (and getting David Prowse to attend their birthday party), posing near huge lego x-wings, raging at heavy metal shows, children's hospitals, and other charity events. While we all enjoy arguing endlessly about screen accuracy on the interwebs, the real reason we are all here is to troop. Prove it by posting more about your outings. Our long time Deployment Officer and resident Swedish Vulcan has stepped down to take a break from the responsibilities of the DO position. Mathias will continue to serve as my right hand server man and contribute to the detachment as much as he can. Many thanks go out to him for all of his tireless work approving EIB and Centurion applications and his numerous, and often inconspicuous, contributions to FISD. Congratulations to our new Deployment Officer, Funkytrigger. He brings with him a UKG eye for TK detail and a proven dedication to FISD. His painted white boots hit the ground running from the day I promoted him. I know Phil will continue to push every applicant to look the best they can. Welcome to the staff! I know I keep saying it, but FISD challenge coins are coming soon! Stay tuned for details. Thank you and keep on trooping. With Unquestioned Loyalty and Aloha.... With Unquestioned Loyalty, Ingrid Moon TK-6818 "LadyInWhite" Executive Officer Remembering Princess Leah The Legion mourns the loss of one of our children. Many of you know of "Princess Leah," the baby daughter of two of our Southern California Garrison members. She has been fighting against a mysterious illness all of her life, and hundreds of Legion members, friends, and strangers alike have lent their strength and love to help her and her family. On June 5th 2013, this little angel grew her wings. Leah passed away in her parent's arms, peacefully and in no pain, and surrounded by family. Please remember our little Princess and the light and love that she brought into the many lives that she touched. In Memoriam: Scott Bristol TK-1428 Scott Bristol (TK-1428) of the 501st Bloodfin Garrison passed from this world in the second week of June 2013. Though retired from the Legion, he is remembered by the 501st, as all troopers, for his commitment to costume excellence and sharing his passion with others. It is with honor that we enter his name into the Hall of Eternal Legionnaires Congratulations, Hudson Valley Squad! The Empire City Garrison has a new unit within its territory! Squad Leader Bob Olszewski (CC-1299) and thirteen other intrepid troopers of the ECG have occupied the lower- and mid-regions of New York State's Hudson River Valley and formed the aptly-named Hudson Valley Squad. They were officially recognized by the Legion on May 26th, 2013. Be sure to Like their new page on Facebook and watch for updates from the blossoming HVS! Good luck on your mission, troopers! eFX Legend Edition Armor and the 501st eFX has unveiled a highly accurate suit of collectors' TK armor at San Diego Comic Con. This is currently called the "eFX Legend Edition" suit and it is reportedly cast from original ANH Hero armor. Price point is expected to be about $2000 USD with pre-orders beginning this fall (US date). This is called "complete" as it comes with the armor, helmet, bodysuit, gloves, boots, holster, neck seal and mannequin. It may also include blaster (we've seen E-11 and DLT-19, not sure yet). The prop is licensed by LFL for display purposes, not for costuming. However, we will undoubtedly be getting questions from would-be members about whether this suit will measure up to Legion approval. The LMOs are examining the images that are available, and at least a few minor inaccuracies have already been spotted. Whether those inaccuracies are enough to keep this suit from being approved without modification has not yet been determined. More research and examination will be required. Also note that the prototype on display at SDCC is a floor model. The suits that come off of the production line may be different. A lot more info can be found here: http://forum.rebelscum.com/t1100218/ THE BOTTOM LINE (at least for now): When fans ask if this armor will be able to get them into the 501st Legion, our answer is that it is too soon to tell, but that our membership officers are on the case. Members at SDCC will be attempting to get additional photos for the LMOs to review. With Unquestioned Loyalty, Sam Kisselburg TK-85254 "Kessel Run" Public Relations Officer Troops, It's been a while since we've handed out a FISD Achievement award but its time again to recognize one of our own. Congratulations to Glen TK-85421 (gmrhodes13) of the Terror Australis garrison. This Centurion's daily dedication to Troopers Helping Troopers has earned him this medal. It is clear that Glen reads every thread religiously and posts often. He is always on hand to welcome a new member warmly. Many TKs come to FISD, learn what they need to learn, grab their EIB and rarely pop back in. Glen is one of the few who has stuck around to perpetuate the community based resource that is the FISD. Thanks man. With Aloha, -Eric Response from gmrhodes13: FISD Achievement Award Well I just wanted to say a big thank you to Eric (our DL) also anyone who had a hand presenting me with the FISD Achievement Award. I was very surprised with this award, I did not know they where still being handed out and never thought even if they where that I would ever receive one. At the end of June 2013 it will mark my 1 year anniversary in costuming and also my time here on the forums. I attended Supa Nova (like a Comic Con) here in Perth Western Australia in June last year and I found out that Stormtrooper armor had become more affordable, unlike when I checked 10-15 years prior, it was then @ $2500. Before I even left the Con I had decided I would take the plunge and become one of you. I joined my local garrison TAG and from there was guided to FISD with the advice of aiming for Centurion level from the start, with this knowledge in hand I did the research and decided on an ATA kit. The long wait of 18 weeks was the downside to the ATA, but luckily I was able to get the lid first. Once that was finished I looked at an E-11 blaster build, then another, a T-21, DLT-19 and by that time my armor had arrived. In the months before I received my armor I read and downloaded as much info from this forum and was pretty well informed of what I needed to do. I got a bit carried away finished my armor, then got basic approval, EIB approval and Centurion approval all in under 3 weeks. But bitten by the bug I could not stop, I ventured away in search of other costumes but always came back to FISD. It was mentioned that I may be interested in becoming an Imperial Attaché which I gladly jumped on board and with this I do what I can to make new people welcome, try to give guidance to those who seek it with their builds and also encourage others to aim higher with their builds, EIB and Centurion, its great to see more and more are aiming for a higher level of costume. I can't ever see me not here at FISD, I will to try to give back to this community as much, if not more, as I can as I have taken away so much. Once again a big thank you and I will try to live up to this award. With Unquestioned Loyalty, Sam Kisselburg TK-85254 "Kessel Run" Public Relations Officer How to- Repair and Repaint Flexible Stormtrooper Hand Guards. For use in making handguards from your original plastic: Simply use the method described below to make your own hand guards by brushing layers inside the plastic guards you own. Don't pour a ton out and expect it to cure, the trick is to brush on thin layers so that the latex will fully cure. If you pour latex in it will cure on the top and outsides but the center will remain liquid, which is why thin layers are important. (A note about recasting - don't make latex copies of your hand plates and sell them; sculpt your own master if you want to sell them.) Trooperbay uses rubber, and LATEX is rubber, so this will work. Karin the Queen of hand guards uses latex so this will also work with her fine quality product. If you need to remove old latex paint or spray paint start here: First, after bad paint cures, sand the handplates with wet sanding starting at 1000g, moving up to 2000g; wash and let dry. Take a small plastic container and mix in a small amount of rubber. It goes a long way so start small, about a 1/2 oz or about 1/16th of a 1/4 cup. Mix in the Acrylic color of your choice until you like the hue. Mix fully. Take a sponge and dip it into the liquid mixture and smoothly apply the paint and latex mixture, using small amounts after you have done the top of each hand plate then move on after the latex is fully cured. The sponge you use should be a makeup application pad. They also have them on a stick like a paintbrush. You want a tight sponge, not a loose one with lots of grain. When the container you've mixed your paint in is dry, then you know the plates are dry. You can leave them in the sun. It will speed up the cure. After several applications of this mixture on top sides and bottom of each hand plate, you can add a nice glossy shine to them by adding some Angelus gloss sealer. This is also applied with a sponge in several layers. mold builder latex with White Red or Black acrylic paint mixed in (Red shown for those magma troopers) for a shine add this on top with a clean tight sponge With Unquestioned Loyalty, Vern Beezer TK-2392 "TK Bondservent 2392" Imperial Attaché Don't Forget We're on Facebook and Twitter! 11. From the Detachment Leader Around the Detachment Tip of the Month Legion News In Memoriam Troop of the Month How to make an Impression Aloha kakou, May was a big trooping month for the 501st. On one weekend most garrisons were scrambling to get troopers to both free comic book day and the various May the 4th celebrations. While I'm a plane ride away from the rest of my outpost, I know that they busted their butts to fulfill many obligations. From following the troop report threads it looks like it was the same hectic schedule across the Legion for my fellow TKs. Congrats on a busy month making people smile at every type of event possible. Our latest proposed CRL changes for EIB and Centurion have not gone through yet. The LMO team became swamped again in the time it took me to request the changes. Given the time span between the initial changes to the base requirements and these changes, we may have to rethink how much we want to change. Two major changes a year may only continue to cause confusion for new recruits. If we end up making all the changes I will institute a grace period for people who are in the middle of their EIB or Centurion builds to allow some folks to pass under some of the old standards Once I get caught up with the LMOs I'll update the detachment accordingly. Please continue to stand by. The biggest flurry of activity on FISD lately has been all the new NE builds. NE armor is the latest generation from the former maker of AM. While the origins of this new armor are totally unclear, we cannot deny that more and more troopers are buying this armor because its more readily available than other popular kits. I would like to make a formal plea for someone to compare the NE armor's size to a known kit. The two questions on my mind are a) Is this armor made for the bigger trooper Is the three piece construction helmet possibly made for larger craniums. Please do not spend your energy on postulating wether or not the armor has been recast. I am only interested in relative size. If any of you who own ATA, TM, TE2 etc armor and know of a garrisonmate with NE, I am offering a special FISD prize to the first person to post high quality comparison photos of armor and helmet with a table of measurements. On the subject of swag, we are planning a FISD coin run for later this summer. Thank you for everything each of you does for our detachment. I know there are troopers out there not on staff making major contributions for the sake of Troopers Helping Troopers. You folks are the beating heart of the detachment and what you do is thankless, so I'm thanking the dedicated and unsung here en masse. With Unquestioned Loyalty and Aloha.... Fear no more! With this tutorial even the must unsteady hand can get the tube stripes just right using stencils! 1. First of all place your stencil where you want it making sure all edges are pushed down as smooth as you can get... 2. Second, take your base coat which will be white because that's what color the bucket is..Take it and apply a nice thin layer over the stencil..What this does is it fills in all the voids, and or open areas under your stencil..So, basically when it dries noting will get underneath it because it's filled and dried.. 3. Last step is to apply the last coat which is your blue. Real easy, just add a nice layer over the white and peel back the stencil and this is your outcome.. Enjoy!.. Tutorial Submitted with Unquestioned Loyalty by Bob Maciejewski "BoB-o" Last month the folks over at Starwars.com asked fans worldwide to send in photos of Star Wars characters at their local landmarks, and the response appears to have been overwhelming. Garrisons and Squads from around the world sent in photos which can be seen here. http://maythe4th.starwars.com/photos/ Starwars.com thanked the Legion and its members in the following letter A letter from Mary Franklin, to the 501st. First of all, please share our exuberant THANK YOU for spreading the word about the Landmark photographs for May the 4th! The response was truly overwhelming and incredible. I’ve never seen such a wonderful variety of photographs from so many locations all over the world featuring Star Wars! Thank you for making that happen. It’s one of my favorite things ever on www.starwars.com. Secondly, our PR team has put together a great collection of fun in one convenient Star Wars camp packet, and they wanted me to share it with you. Please enjoy, and if your kids and their friends use some of these ideas, please send pictures to me. I can include some in Bantha Tracks, like I will some of the Landmark photographs, too! Here’s their note and the link: Quote: Dear Star Wars Fan: We wanted to let you know about Lucasfilm’s new Star Wars camp toolkit, a free resource to help bring the universe of Star Wars to life in your local camp or even the backyard! Housed at www.StarWars.com/camptoolkit the new kit is a downloadable activity book that has a wide variety of games, arts, crafts and trivia to help add to your child’s summer. We would love help getting the word out about this great resource. We made it free so that we could get Star Wars in the hands of as many kids as possible this year. Let us know if you can help by forwarding on, posting on blogs, twitter, Facebook pages or including in newsletters, email blasts, etc. We really appreciate your support and look forward to seeing the Force in action this summer! Mary Franklin. On a side note, most of you know I am new to the role of Public Relations Officer and have huge shoes to fill with all Ingrid has done as PRO in the past. That being said, I would like to thank all of you for your patience while I am getting used to how this is all done. This newsletter is defiantly a team effort, and I appreciate the support that I have been shown by the officers, staff, and members of FISD. Also if anyone sees or hears anything that you think might be of interest to this community I want to hear from you! Send me a PM. You are the boots on the ground, the tip of the spear. Great job Troopers! With Unquestioned Loyalty, Sam Kisselburg TK-85254 "Kessel Run" Public Relations Officer Honor, in and out of uniform. When you're in armor, standing tall and shining bright, you make an impression - on kids, on parents, on event sponsors, on spectators. We all want to make a great impression and leave our fellow Star Wars fans feeling great and wanting more. We strive to create a positive, fun experience, in part for the fans, and in part for ourselves. Looking good, feeling good, doing good. That's why we choose the iconic white, and why we work so hard to appear our best. We are proud to be 501st Legion members and we are happy for people to recognize us. The more we learn about accuracy and costuming in our FISD community, the stronger our opinions and desire for more accuracy. We learn to discriminate the good from the bad, and we often aren't afraid to share that new knowledge with others. It's easy to get caught up in the magic of looking fabulous. We make impressions even when we are out of our armor. If someone curses at you out the window, and they're wearing a brand or logo, you not only begin to hate that person, you hate that brand they're associated with as well. If you're wearing your 501st or FISD jacket, and you offend someone (on purpose or inadvertently), you make a negative impression on them not only for yourself, but for the brand you are wearing. The stickers on your car, the tags in your social media outlets, and your t-shirts and patches all create associations with your behavior. If you get swept away in a crusade of looking fabulous, putting down your fellow TKs or even other fans in ... those other costumes... you make FISD and the 501st seem elitist and unfriendly. This is definitely not a perception we want or need. You represent the 501st Legion and your detachments and garrisons, so any behavior you have while out of costume, in real life or your digital life, also affects the reputation of these organizations. So please remember to make a good impression. If you want to behave badly in person or online, be sure you won't be associated with the 501st. If you want to behave wonderfully, knight in shining white armor and all that, then by all means, flaunt your affiliation! With Unquestioned Loyalty, Ingrid Moon TK-6818 "LadyInWhite" Executive Officer HOW-TO: Tube stripe painting with no bleed through Want that hand-painted look but intimidated by the tube stripes? My door is open to you, and, we couldn’t do this without you. Buckets off, and thank you. The service was filled with many anecdotes about a wonderful man's life, and there was more than one reference to Admiral Motti's experience with Lord Vader. At the end of the service, Garrison XO, William Tatsch, presented the family with an Imperial flag. 13. NO I REFUSE! lol besides I got a few of those chips from throwing across the garage at the dog.
  14. So I decided to take a perfectly good Helmet and beat it all up. I wanted this TK to look like he had seen some action so here's the result, and how I got there. step 1 take perfectly good helmet. Step 2. paint that helmet this awful green color . Step 3. get some liquid latex and scatter it around where you want it. Step 4. paint the helmet white again. enough with the steps you get the idea... after it dries rub off the latex paint detail as normal then weather to your hearts content. ends up looking like this. I personally like it. and now it will take its place on my wall. on to the next project!
  15. I sent you a detailed PM but basically no not at this time sorry.
