  1. Rubies both is 5404, along the back right wall of the con. Words can't explain the suck of the armor
  2. Hey folks, Had the misfortune of seeing the Rubies armor up close at San Diego Comic-Con. I haven't taken pics yet, but I'm sure we'll have some soon from me or someone else. The suit is hard plastic and, though it appears molded from a ROTJ suit (ridges on edges), it is very warped. The Rubies guy actually told an interested party ahead of me that the armor they see on most people costs $4k to complete and this is licensed and only $1k. When I came up, he answered some assembly questions (mostly velcro and elastic) and told me that most other suits run $6k to complete and this is only $1k. He asked if I'd seen the other suits, I replied politely that I have one, he hesitated and asked me how much it cost to complete, I told him about $800. He said well, considering the work it must have required, the two are about the same. The helmet is hideous, absolutely hideous, and the armor is very warped. No one should worry about this being accepted into the Legion. Phil
  3. I also trimmed the U in my forearms (AFX) and I think it makes a lot of difference. I also try to keep my bicep up above my elbow too, but still occasionally get the armor hickies the day after... Phil
  4. I think someone on the 501st forum mentioned thinking they heard something on the RPF about this being a clever way to video-document the destruction of a defective product in order to get a replacement from Sideshow. They thought it was telling that she didn't destroy the bike too. I hope that's the case. Phil
  5. Marching comes pretty easily to me, had four years of marching band It might be interesting for a group of troops in one area to work on something like a video of how to march and post it for everyone. That would help spread the word through the legion about marching basics. For the drill team, I think that sounds sweet. It also seems like it would have to be troops that live relatively close to one another, but just the sight would be very cool. Phil
  6. no, the coin was used to create the circle in the middle of the belt. The imprint was visible from the inside. I'm not familiar with some of the old-school tells from GF. I actually got my GF suit already assembled by TE, so I'm not 100% sure how it compares to a vintage GF suit or if TE made any other mods to mine. I'm sure one of our more knowledgeable guys will pop on here and sort it out Phil
  7. GF suit? This was mine, and the ab looks very similar to me. Maybe someone else can help, did the ANH gf suits have a canadian coin imprint or was it just his first, AFX-style suits? Phil
  8. "I'm picking up your sarcasm." "That's because I'm laying it on you pretty thick."
  9. as an alternative: My thighs still close with velcro in the back and snap to the straps that come down from the ab armor. I can take off my thighs and sit, bend over, and kneel down. I usually wait to put them on last because of the incredible range of motion that I have without them. Phil
  10. I have it on Beta Unfortunately the parents have the Beta machine...
  11. woohoo, my terms are going mainstream! Now I just need to get "everyone and their monkey" into circulation... Phil
  12. definitely, plus I have my speaker set up right behind it, so while no one can see inside now, it's not really great for venting lol Phil
  13. Here we go ------------ Some people have asked if you can see through the mesh. Yes, some flash pictures or outdoor pictures do show a little slip of skin back there. I think that adding a second layer of mesh at a cross-angle or putting a small flap of black fabric would take care of that. I think this is ok here because it's a helmet venting thread, no hijack intended Phil
  14. wow, that is sad. I've been a fan of his for a long time. I used to watch a show on the Discovery Channel called 'Movie Magic' and his work was often documented. Him, Phil Tippett, Joe Johnston, and Rick Baker were the first special effects guys that I looked up to and were frequently on the show. I always thought it'd be awesome to be in the industry. He's been at comic-con almost every year I've gone and while I always thought it be neat to meet him I never bothered because I didn't know what I'd say to him. It's a shame because it seems like this came out of nowhere. I'm almost positive he was there last year. Phil
  15. I think I like them. I mean it's one thing for us to say "only regular stormtroopers" but we have to remember that the reason we're so attached to them is mostly that it's what we grew up with. Kids today are going to grow up with the new stuff they're seeing, and if the FU (which I love, btw!) become canonized, then they'll have a significant impact on the next generation of fans. I agree that, intended or not, it seems to represent the death throes of individualism in the trooper ranks. It works well as a transition. Don't get me wrong, it looks strange to me, but I think there's potential there. And, not to open a hornet's nest, but it would be ten times easier to paint a color scheme on my TK suit than to figure out a TC suit. I love the look of a battle-damaged color scheme. Phil
  16. very inspiring, I plan to tackle one myself soon Any details on filing down the ears? Did you file them uniformly from top to bottom or just in some places? It may be more work than I want to put in it, but I'd love to hear what exactly you did. Phil
  17. I've always had great luck with these: ----- They come flat, so you can cut any shape and heat them to fit wherever. Phil
  18. I honestly don't know. I gave up looking at the prices awhile back, just resigned myself. I'm paying about $50-$55 to fill up my 13.5 gallon tank though. I've got a 2008 CR-V and it's averaging about 28.1 MPG Phil
  19. I dig it. Hope mine comes out as well. I'll be going sandtrooper
  20. I had a GF suit awhile back and I 'think' that the buttons on the ab were in the form of a plate that was glued on, so you could put it on upside-down if you want. Ultimately I think you'll need to ask your armor supplier. The one tricky thing I can think of is that the ROTJ armor has the ridges/outlines around parts of the armor that the ANH doesn't. That would be a pain to duplicate. Phil
  21. I'm guessing some incarnation of the RT mod? But maybe the weird widow's peak in the brow, extra thick paint on the frown, and flat top of the black 'mouth' area are contributing to making it look weird.
  22. usually they should contact you pretty quickly. The actual costume verification and official membership stuff might take a little longer though. If you haven't already, contact the GML (garrison membership liaison), but if you haven't heard back from them, contact the garrison's XO (executive officer) and just let them know what's up. Maybe the GML is out of contact for some reason. Phil
  23. cool link, except for the extra piece of plastic, that's exactly what I did. Instead I just connect the two pieces so flush that no piece of plastic in between is needed. Phil
