The reference for the bothan spies died to get the plans is from ROTJ, isn't it? When mothma gives the briefing to the rebels before the endor assault... And I think the poor bothans died to get the rebels the information that the emperor himself was going to supervise the final construction of the second Death Star...

I can't recall any mention in ANH about how Leia got the plans... But who knows! May be I'm getting all confused again... Ummmm I think I should watch all the OT again just to solve this out...
