Billy Shears Posted December 7, 2010 Report Posted December 7, 2010 (edited) I've been slowly replacing the elastic that's held my kit together since day one but I've been having some trouble gluing the strapping to my thighs I've tried epoxy, hot glue, and e 600 but nothing seems to hold. Is there some wonder glue that I'm missing? The straps run from the thigh and attach to the mid section via Velcro. Any suggestions of a better way to attach the thigh pieces would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks Edited December 7, 2010 by Billy Shears Quote
pandatrooper[TK] Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 (edited) Garters that attach to a belt would be better, and take the weight off your torso. I believe the original suits had belts with elastic straps glued to the thighs. I made some "V" shaped garters, which attach via snap plates. I find they don't swing around this way, and they are adjustable left and right and in height. ---------- Edited January 27, 2021 by gmrhodes13 link not working, removed gmrhodes13 2021 Quote
TK bondservnt[501st] Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 while garters work fine for some people, it's also a good idea to use 2 snaps and velcro in a combination. I've made snap tabs using leather, and they work like a charm! using leather allows you to make a larger footprint for the snap tab and it curves with the armor well. I think that garters make the thighs shift in vertical position when the garter slides up or down your torso, which adds up to just one more problem. if you have a tight belt, and a well harnessed design for your AB plate setup then attaching the thigh straps to the AB plate with snaps and velcro usually does the trick. the glue that you use for the elastic usually should have something that the elastic can flex around. snaps work well because they travel through the elastic and keep it in place much better. fabric snap tabs, and you should be good to go. troopermaster Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 E6000 works extremely well in my experience. Make sure you glue a good 3" square area of the strap inside the top of the thigh and leave it to set for 24 hours. I've had to remove the odd strap once glued and it takes some getting off. I've never had a problem with E6000. Quote
john danter Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 (edited) Yep lots use E6000 and it seems fine Are you sanding the contact surface down so its smooth and is it a fresh but if elastic you're using to be sure? I like proper ABS glue myself. Damages your armour if you spill any though as it actually disolves the plastic together Plus my guess is this what may have used back in the day Just don't spill any E6000 is safer so my guess is your area isn't clean or you're not clamping it down maybe? Garters also help to spread the weight of your costume on you Piling it all onto your midsection and hanging off there isn't the best way to do it Edited December 8, 2010 by john danter Quote
Daetrin[Admin] Posted December 8, 2010 Report Posted December 8, 2010 I like the garter system but sometimes the thight still pull down. I find I have to add suspenders as well to the rig. Or, back in the day I just strapped the thighs directly to the cod area of the ab plate, which worked very well for many years. That was on ABS FX armor though, not sure the HIPS would take the strain. Quote
