1. Actually, if you have a bolt or quick change type drill bit that fits inside the snap, you can use it to hammer the little split tabs in there to a flatter more secure position. I do it to all my snaps, but I've never used the tool you have. Then again, I'm also really new to this as well.
2. That is a pretty great name. One of the interesting ones I ran into at work was McDoom. I later found out that the prefix "Mc" meant "son of", so I literally came across the The Son of Doom, one day. Go figure. My nickname is pretty simple, I make seating furniture for local churches. I'm joking of course. The nickname is as simple and uninspired as it sounds. It's just a sound effect a kid might make to simulate blaster fire noises.
3. Shoulder strap also appears to be formed to the breast plate.
4. I was thinking something similar for my action shot actually. lol. Anyway, time for some pictures with a real update, and also I need some advice regarding getting this all to fit. First off, a potato phone quality pic of some tights and an unfinished lid. FYI, get your tights from Costco if you can. They're ladies tights, but they feel FABULOUS! Feels like I'm wearing, nothing at all... nothing at all... nothing at all... Also, they're super cheap. Perhaps somebody can have a look at the pics of the test fit and make some recommendations. Everything just sits horribly awkward right now, and I'm not sure what and when I should be trimming the kidney and ab portions. It seems that if those parts were trimmed and attached to each other the proper fitting would be easier to assess. Also, do I trim the kidney first and leave the ab alone for now, or equal amounts of both? I went with elastic for the joining snaps and webbing for the snap plates. I also opted to just have separate snap plates for the crotch area so as not to have extra stress on the snaps that were drilled into the ABS itself. In an emergency they might make good backup snaps though. Left side, arms up: Left side, with arms out front: Right side: Back of my front: Front side: Any thoughts? Recommendations on getting this to sit properly? It seems like my but plate is sitting to high, but if I lower it then my back plate would sit to low, unless I leave a bit of gap between it and the kidney. As mentioned I went with extra snaps in the crotch area to avoid putting stress on the ones that were drilled into the ABS itself. I never would have thought I would have this many clamps and still need more: The snaps seem like they're attaching to the web well enough: I've got lots of stuff glued, but nothing completed really. So far I'm aiming for the standard recommended cover strip sizes, which I'm saving until after I've got everything to fit properly. I really like the E6000 and find it very forgiving. The idea that people can do this with CA glue blows my mind. That's just not enough play time. And finally, the cat tax: Any and all feedback is welcome, folks. Thanks for taking the time to look.
5. I know from working with latex paint when painting just walls in a house, that if you go along the edge of the tape line with a razor that it will help the tape come off cleaner without accidentally removing the paint you want to remain behind. Now since this is enamel based paint, that trick might not work the same. I'm not sure, but I figured it couldn't hurt to mention it.
6. Did taping the frown help keep the lines of the frown nice and sharp? Any tips for that one?
7. You need to use an image host such as www.imgur.com and then just add the picture using the "add picture" button on the web interface when posting. It will be with the rest of the buttons that allow you to format your post. When you click on it it will give you a pop up requesting a URL for where the picture is located. I hope that helps.
8. That's awesome, Raz. It's been enjoyable following along with your build thread. Keep at it, trooper.
9. I'd share some short people jokes, but they'd probably just go over your head...I will show myself out now.
10. That's really the best pic I've seen in a while. It has a Lion King vibe going.
11. That's crazy cheap! I paid almost $50 for a dozen at Princess Auto! I demand a do-over! I had no idea Home Depot carried them. Do you recall what section of the store? I'm not sure if they're hardware or tool and their website isn't being exactly helpful.
Just noticed now that you're in Windsor, CT, but I misread as Windsor, ON. Big difference in our dollar right now. Probably explains a lot.
12. Alright, I haven't been updating this thing obviously, but I sure have been busy working on my kit. When I ordered this box of plastic I can honestly say I had no idea what I was getting into.
I know a proper update with pictures etc. is needed and I hope to put together something this weekend that better illustrates the degree of progress I've made, as it seems that all my spare time is spent building.
10 straight hours of building here today and it still doesn't look like I'm any closer to the end. The last few weekends have been similar, and I'm sure the wife is happy to have me out of her hair too. I picked a great project to be obsessive compulsive about, because this thing is never going to freaking end! There may be an actual Death Star by the time I'm done. I had to trim one of my very limited supply of split rivets with the Dremel earlier today, when the Dremel finally caught it and launched it... POOF! Jedi Mind Trick... That was no longer the rivet I was looking for! Time for a break for now.
BTW, I had no idea that "WTF" was another community based acronym... I just added that to the title for laughs. Sorry Walt.
13. I got those same clamps when I started to go with some other kinds that I already had. I bet you probably think you'll never need that many clamps at one time don't you? Ha! Boy, was I surprised too.
Where'd you get the magnets from, if I might ask?
14. I don't know why, but I always picture people wearing the armor while doing this in some cartoonish fashion, when in reality I know it would be absolutely horrific. Or, for example, I need to bath my forearms, but imagine myself just wearing them while in the shower or something.
15. I've seen many posts from disappointed and frustrated troopers that didn't properly heed this advice. No experience with either, but everyone always says if you're going to go the heat gun route then to make sure you get comfortable using it on some scrap ABS first.
16. Only one liver? This guy said I had two, and he's a doctor. I never thought of it until now, but other than this armor, I don't have a single other piece of Star Wars merchandise. Not one piece. Funny that it never occurred to me until now. It actually just kind of blew my mind given all the work and research I've been putting into this armor lately. Oh well, better to have one really cool piece, I guess.
17. Thanks Tony, I will go with the line 24's as that's what I have handy. Great tutorials BTW. If you were able to generate ad revenue from the number of views they got, I'm pretty sure I'd have been able to put your kids through college due to the number of times I've referenced them.
18. Thanks Terry. Good advice here. Actually it was exactly what I was looking for. Happy Canada Day!
19. Wait... ...are you Bruce Campbell?Oh and uber-congrats on your EIB! Good work trooper.
20. Ha! I sold one of my livers and am now crippled by debt. I don't feel so good all of a sudden. I think that might have been the liver I used to filter out the high quantities of remorse I'm prone to. No biggie, still got awesome armour! Woohoo!
21. C-clamps will work, but they will move around more when you tighten them. The spring clamps are pretty cheap. I picked up a bag of 22 assorted sizes, HDX brand from Home Depot for $8. Do you work around an office? Grab a handful of the black folding binder clips.
22. Hmmmm... taking crotch advice from a strange panda over the Internet. I kinda feel like my parents should have warned me about things like this.
Does it matter if I use line 20 or line 24 snaps on the butt plate?
23. Good point. I guess I got plenty of warning.
