  1. These are amazing! A+++ thread! Please don't stop, cautionary tales for things to watch out for. Doesn't slow me down, this info is pure gold!
  2. Very interesting, it seems the airbrush overspray on the teeth resulted in a sharper line on your helmet as opposed to some others I've seen today, which show a little more "fuzzy" transition. I like yours better. Also, I may be wrong about this, but aren't the interior surfaces of the mic tips ideally supposed to be white? Easily remedied.
  3. Yeah, my understanding is that it also makes it harder for folks to see your eyes, and even helps cut down on some of the reflective glare, kind of like football player grease under your eyes. Brush paint, good idea. I hadn't thought of that Means you don't necessarily have to go right to the edges at all. I'm definitely going to do that.
  4. Going to paint the interior of the helmet black? Looks like everything detaches easily enough...
  5. No worries about the lack of inner cover strips. I'll be using For Sale sign plastic for that like many other builders have. There's no way I would tackle my first build without inner cover strips to help align the outer ones properly.
  6. Not counting the trial and error, maybe $20 so far. ANd I've ended up with extra PVC, balsa, and dowel lengths. Some things, like the flashlight handle, I had lying around.
  7. I don't think the compressor is going to be necessary; I don't think many folks here use one. Lexan scissors and/or the score-and-snap method seem to dominate here. The trick is to not cut too close, and count on sanding to make the lines go where you need. Move slowly, don't rush. Abolish deadlines. Or so I hear. That's what I'll be doing. I think Frank Ippolito on Tested went way, way overboard with the compressor and saw, and did the hobby a disservice by taking the trimming in that direction. Have a look at TK-1636's videos. Bill
  8. Thanks for the kind words, very much. I promise to resume my build very soon; had lots of problems with that barrel block, but continuing soon. Yes, I do see that eBay is drying up a little. It's a matter of biding your time and waiting for the right opportunity. I see a 13pc set for $100, which seems like a lot, except that it has no less than FOUR core grips. At $25 each, that is a steal. But how to liquidate the rest? Good luck, and thanks again for reading! I'll figure this beast out shortly. Bill
  9. ** Edited to remove my comments after Dean clarified ** Glad to hear people will have some breathing room.
  10. This is so not a big deal at all. As I see it, the real question is: would you have placed the order knowing that you cannot cancel after some people start receiving it? Would you have accepted the new policy at the time of order? If not, cancel now. Easy peasy. If yes, then why complain? However: If you paid $350-$450, there is no reason to cancel. You can probably sell it to anyone here for what you paid or better. If you paid $650, same thing, maybe just trim a few pieces at their maximum size to add value and then resell. Or better yet, break up your set and sell it piecemeal. There are plenty of folks who will buy certain parts and you'll make your money back. The change in cancel policy doesn't mean that anyone is screwed. You still have a choice. Until tomorrow. That all said, I will admit that giving people two days to read their email and decide to cancel is very lame. They should have allowed more time.
  11. Antonio, what technique did you settle on to help keep the shins from slipping down as you walk?
  12. According to TK-1636's YouTube build videos, he estimated about 40 hours for himself, and he is very experienced. I figure for my first build I'll add an extra 50%, raising it to 60 hours. And then cure time for the E6000 on top of that, but you can work on some parts while others are curing. Since I went for the ANOVOS kit, I figure I can shave off 10 hours or so, since the helmet and belt come preassembled. Don't forget about your E-11! Bill
  13. LOL, just think of it as a magnet, pulling most of the mindless comments away from the other, more useful threads. There are worse threads to be venting in. It's the "Night Before Christmas" excitement, and the kids won't go to sleep so Santa can come already...
  14. Completely agree, but even the up-close shots of stunt troopers are very brief ones, so you can get away with it. The shots of Luke and Han in hero armor are very long ones, so you have lots of time to mull the details. But whoever was directing the movie (not sure who) was not really consistent about how hero vs. stunt was to be used, nor was he a stickler for keeping the details consistent (such as Mr. No Stripes and the other anomalies).
  15. I think the intention here is that Lucas envisioned the hero armor to be the "ideal" and the stunt to be the cheap, simpler version. The idea of fewer teeth, bubble lenses, etc., were intended to be the "main" version. And since the stunt armor for the most part was intended to be for more distance shots (or at least for briefer shots), the more expensive and hard-to-see-through bubble lenses were tossed. More teeth at a distance helps make the frown look sufficiently prominent. You don't need that up close or for a longer exposure. So think of the hero armor as the primary look, and the stunt for distance or brief shots. Ironically, I think it's the stunt armor that got more published coverage, so now, many see the stunt armor as the more "in-universe" version. I know I prefer it.
  16. Sorry to be a part of dumbing down your exclusive hobby. I hope you'll accept me anyway...
  17. Not sure, the ANOVOS site claims to have some of that: Maybe less lopsidedness, but I think there will be some there.
  18. I just hope the helmet is easily disassembled so I can paint the interior black, install ear mics, etc.
  19. Exactly. I look forward to the perfect thread on these forums that tells the new ANOVOS folks (myself included) exactly what they have to do to bring their armor up to spec. The good news is, it looks like it won't be nearly as much as some of the other "licensed" products.
  20. I know eBay isn't super popular on these boards, but I have had pretty good success with Tandy snaps on eBay if purchased in quantity. Example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/221622700546 A 100-pack may seem like a lot, but it's not if you're going to do double snaps, which I am. You can always sell a bunch back to the FISD community, since they are cheap to ship. And 40 cents (shipped) for each full snap set is a bargain. I got mine this way, and they are legit. The setter and single anvil are most affordable if purchased separately as Prime "add-on" items on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003A9I9ZQ http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003A728X2 Under $7 for both. 21. Super, super cool, I'll be watching this one. Just be ready to make changes, as there are problems with that concept sketch. It has a butt stock AND a folding stock, which, I might add, is ridiculously long. A quick Google image search of "E-11s" shows multiple interpretations of what it should look like, but I think I like the old Battlefront one the most, which is almost a DLT-19 with a super scope of some kind. Good luck! Bill
  22. Found one of my kids' toy phasers, so I couldn't resist trying it out: This is Star Wars forum, after all.
  23. Kylo was injured, under-trained, and undisciplined. He had no control of his fury at all. He can stop a blaster bolt if he's under control, that's how I see it. Even Snoke said he needed more training. We don't know for sure if Kylo had any lightsaber training at all. It's not like there are any saber warriors left in the galaxy, and he was swinging that thing around like a broadsword. No finesse, no precision. Finn, being trained in melee combat as a stormtrooper, had a chance.
  24. I think you've completely nailed it. This is exactly what I was thinking. It also shows how tragic the massacre is and why it would be enough to shatter Han & Leia's relationship.
  25. She's already been mentioned by LFL as being in Episode 8. So, will we find out if her lowering the shields was cowardice, divided loyalties, or simply bad writing. I suppose it could also be arrogance, like the idea that even lowering the shields couldn't give the Resistance an advantage. I just hope it's explained one way or another.
