Bishop Posted April 22, 2025 Report Posted April 22, 2025 Hey everyone, Bit of an off-topic post, but I figured someone here might be into tech or data tools. I recently started a new job where I keep hearing the term “Power BI dashboard” thrown around, and honestly, I have no clue what it actually is or how it works. From what I’ve gathered, it’s some kind of visual reporting tool used in business, but I don’t come from a data background, so most of it sounds like jargon to me. Can anyone explain in simple terms what is Power BI dashboard and what it’s really used for? Is it something worth learning if I just want to keep up with reporting at work, or is it more for advanced data folks? Any tips or beginner resources would be appreciated too. Thanks in advance, and sorry if this is way off-topic. You guys always seem to know a bit about everything, so I thought I’d ask here! Cheers, HJ Bishop Quote
gmrhodes13[Staff] Posted April 22, 2025 Report Posted April 22, 2025 Just Googled it as I had no idea A Power BI dashboard is a single-page, visual representation of key data metrics and insights, designed to provide a high-level overview at a glance. It's essentially a curated collection of visualizations (like charts, graphs, and tables) that highlight the most important aspects of a business or data story. Dashboards are a feature of the Power BI service, not Power BI Desktop. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/service-dashboards Quote
Shanester[TK] Posted April 22, 2025 Report Posted April 22, 2025 (edited) PowerBI, or PBI is a Microsoft product. It is for managing data for reporting/publication/visualization. I am far from an expert, but I do use it in my job. It is a very robust reporting tool and mastering it is great for the resume, IMO. BTW, I am not in business. I work at a University and we use it for research data analysis, reporting, visualization, etc. Edited April 22, 2025 by Shanester 1 Quote
Sly11[Admin] Posted April 22, 2025 Report Posted April 22, 2025 I have used Power BI for several years. It is a reporting tool and dependent on the iteration, allows you to drill down into sales figures and products to see volume of sales and sales data. Market share, % you can graph it etc etc. Basically, you can place information into it via adjusting tabs or checking boxes to find particular information. A business will build a framework and populated with all their available data, which then allows you to extract specifics to learn what is working or what isn't, prompt you to ask question why those results are the way they are with a client, and ultimately form a picture and baseline for you to gain momentum with or better understand a business.
