"Buckets Off" Hey everyone, With only a few hours left to go before voting opens – or it’s underway depending on when you read this – do remember to vote in the Legion elections. It takes 5 minutes and allows you to complain should anyone do anything you don’t like the rest of the year. A huge Thank You! is due for an incredible 2017 year on FISD. The staff has been simply the best we’ve ever had and FISD is running like a well oiled machine. There were many members who also contributed in a huge way in terms of merch design and CRL photo processing. It was truly a team effort. Newsletters are going out on time chock full of useful information, the boards are friendly and inviting with a lot of contests and new tutorials, and Danny our Editor at Large has worked tirelessly to clean up the forums to make things easier to find and more relevant. All the The Last Jedi TK CRLs are complete, and the TLJ Phasma is simply waiting on photos. All FOTKs now have Expert Infantryman and Centurion standards and applications for these awards are coming through in waves. The Rogue One TK CRL is also complete, and the Rebels Stormtrooper also went live. We’ve started a re-birth on social media with the official Facebook and Twitter feeds being active again, and the attache program is expanding to that platform as well. We’ve released new merch and the latest coins are the amazing. Patches have been digitally updated and are coming out as well. The March to 1000 Expert Infantry merch is in full swing, and First Order TKs are now appearing on merch too. Did we mention the silver proof coin? All items have had to be re-ordered as we are selling out, including the 10th anniversary patch. And we’re just getting started! The plan for 2018 is to take this to the next level. Giving Phasma a lot of love on the forum and CRL is a top priority, and we’ll expand our outreach on to social media even further. The masses have spoken and you’ll see a lot more official FO TK merch coming out of FISD as well. The forum will move to the Legion webservers for greater uptime. And that’s just the beginning. I’m so excited for 2018 as the hot streak for FISD will only continue. Many of the best ideas however come from you, the members. FISD is here to serve the needs of all 501st stormtroopers after all. Come join the party! With Unquestioned LoyaltyPaul Hoeffer TK8020 “Daetrin” FISD Detachment Leader Thank you to all who have been patiently awaiting a response for your submissions we have been endeavouring to get through the backlog as soon as we could and are almost back to a normal timeline, if you still have an outstanding submission please standby. In order to vote in the 501st election, you must be a 501st member. If you wish to vote for the FISD Detachment Leader, you must have an approved FISD costume and have your status with the FISD approved. "How do I have FISD status approved?" you ask. Good question. You must, access your member page in the 501st forum Membership DB: http://new.501st.com/memberDB/ , go to the bottom of your profile page to the "Your Unit Affiliation" section, there you will see the detachments you are eligible to join. If aren't joined, simply click add and you will be pending until you are approved by the XO or DL, then you will see approved after FISD. For those of you that are still pending please read this post here It is important to remember that to remain an active member of any detachment, you must login in the forums at least once a year. If you are reading this and used to be an approved member of the FISD, simply add yourself back to the FISD via the above procedure and we'll be more the glad to approve you once again. After your are an approved member of the FISD, don't forget to request FISD forum access here Don't forget to vote and enjoy the FISD!! Tradition holds that persons currently serving on staff cannot be granted Achievement Medals (or else it can become too self-serving). Thus, if you see a staff member with an Achievement Medal, they've all earned them prior to joining staff. To date only two people have ever earned a second medal, and no one has ever earned a third. The idea behind this program is to allow future Troopers the opportunity to submit photos of their completed build to be reviewed by the Staff, Imperial Attaches and others in preparation for forwarding it to their GML for approval. Any and all advice/suggestions given will be specific, constructive, helpful and respectful. Please note that this program will NOT take the place of your local GML, as Detachments are not chartered for costume approval and can not override a GMLs decision, but is instead a peer review program designed to help you look your best and offer guidance and positive feedback. You will have the opportunity to ask questions about your completed armor, weapons (if applicable), accessories, etc. and get accurate information from the experts here at the FISD.. the definitive home of TKs worldwide. For more information on this program, please visit the link here I’m sorry but was January a Jedi Mind Trick - just like that it has come and gone. However thanks to our Troopers and their Field Reports, we actually have something to look back on! This month there was a lot of “Bad guys doing good”, and one photo in particular caught my attention. Redefining that what we do is fun for the whole family - no matter which side of the armor you’re on... Honoring TK-72313 Gary “Ready to serve the empire with my son and brother!” With Unquestioned Loyalty Aaron Gibson TK99725 "Pyrates" Imperial Propaganda Department Valentines Happy Valentines Day to all of you who like me will spend this with the one you love, yes your ARMOR Want to share a Valentines photo? post in this thread UBTech Stormtrooper Crush the Resistance with an army of app-enabled Stormtrooper robots Save for the occasional defector and reality TV dance troupe, it’s fair to say that Stormtroopers are hard to love. That is, unless you’re talking about tiny adorable robot Stormtroopers, like this one from UBTECH. At 16-in tall, it’s not a particularly intimidating soldier, but your mini Stormtrooper will do its utmost to protect the First Order against the resistance by responding to voice commands and plans of attack you issue via its AR app. You can have it patrol your bedroom perimeter, and facial recognition tech stores up to three faces in a database, meaning any unfamiliar intruders will be quickly warned off. UBTECH's Stormtrooper missed Force Friday and The Last Jedi’s release — no surprise, really. The robotic toy moves pretty slowly, all things told. Perhaps it was a matter of getting things just right, or maybe it was the pains of dealing with such a high-profile license for the first time. Whatever the case, the Chinese robotics startup has just taken the wraps off one last piece of Star Wars tech for the year — and it’s a doozy. Unlike other Force Friday tech toys like Sphero’s various droids, the Stormtrooper is a traditional humanoid robot. It’s a full-bodied toy that walks on command — or, rather, shuffles a bit, really. The armor is based on designs from The Last Jedi, featuring some subtle changes over the First Order uniforms found in the Force Awakens. Of course, Stormtroopers were an interesting choice for a robotics startup. After all, as your nerdiest friends will tell you, the Empire ditched droids for clones, and the First Order relies on people trained from birth to carry out its bidding. But UBTECH’s own hardware specialty made the characters better a fit than a BB-8 or R2-D2. “We focus on humanoid robotics,” a spokesperson for the company told TechCrunch. “That involves limbs and walking. That’s something that we do well. Stormtroopers are universally identifiable. You see more Stormtroopers at Comic-Con than probably any other character.” C-3PO was apparently in the running, but the character’s super-thin design would have thrown the product’s proportions off even more than they already are. As is, it has a bit of a cartoonishly large head. The robot has a bunch of on-board sensors, including a light monitor, gyroscope accelerometer and an IR detector built into its feet that help stop it from going over the edge of a table — because Stormtroopers are dumb, but not that dumb. Once the robot detects the edge, it will make a U-turn to get itself back on track. The helmet has a built-in camera that allows the user to see through the bot’s eyes via the connected iPad app. There also are three on-board mics that will allow for voice commands at some point. In the meantime, control all happens in the app. The company clearly worked closely with Disney — it’s got all the bells and whistles you’d expect, right down to the familiar strains of the John Williams score. It features a number of executable commands for simple movements like walking and drawing his blaster. More interestingly, the app also features AR contact, where the Stormtrooper executes longer missions in various Star Wars locales. You can find more info here What Do You Have? Another great thread you can find here on FISD is one posted by our XO Eric "What Do You Have?", it's always interesting to see how many of us get bitten by the building bug and go on to more costumes, great to see how many you have approved and what you are working on. Also interesting to see how many go ahead to take those costumes to the higher levels. Occasionally you will see someone with a little OCD problem, cough, cough . You can find the thread here FO's Not Feeling The Love? Our DL Paul started a thread as he had heard from some troopers that FISD seems to think FO TK's are 2nd class citizens or something. He was surprised to see the question come up on the election Q&A, quite honestly, especially given the big investment this detachment has been making the past several months on FOTKs. Paul posted examples of what had been achieved for the FO TK's, given all of those he is trying to understand where the sentiment that FO TKs are not somehow first class citizens is coming from. Questions? Concerns? Ideas? Sound off, it's time to have your say, thread is here Time for a Field Exercise Assignment Troopers!!! http://img1.joyreactor.com/pics/post/gif-Stormtrooper-workout-809403.gif February is the month of the Legion Elections - your challenge: During your troops see if you can rally together and create a funny spoof election photo. Ie. A line up of troopers in front of a ballot box, but all the votes lying around the ballot box (as we can’t seem to hit anything including the slot where the votes are supposed to go) and a Vader face palming. The rules: -Post your photos here in this thread -Please keep it tasteful, humorous, and in the Star Wars Galaxy. -NO reference real life political factions -NO reference to real life political leaders or figures. You have until our next newsletter goes to print (11th March) to post your photos Good luck troopers. With Unquestioned Loyalty Aaron Gibson TK99725 "Pyrates" Imperial Propaganda Department So what exactly are EIB (Expert Infantry Badge) and Centurion levels? These programs were designed for those who choose to take their armor above and beyond the minimum requirements for basic 501st Legion approval. It gives you the chance to show a level of dedication and pride that takes your armor closer to being as "screen accurate" as possible, without as much extra work as you may realize! It also works on giving a better look to the Legion as an entity, and you can bet others will take notice of your hard work. The 501st has a list of detailed requirements for Basic approval, (level 1), EIB, (level 2) and Centurion, (level 3) which can be found here in the Costume Reference Library, (CRL) http://databank.501st.com/databank/Costuming:FISD_CRL Here are a few of the questions people may be wondering about: 1. "I am a (tall/short/heavy/thin) Trooper. Can I still apply? Of course! These programs are open and encouraged for all sizes of TKs, as long as the costume is correct and meets the guidelines. There are many specific build tutorials to every option, as well as a vast network of fellow TKs on the FISD to help you out and offer suggestions. 2. "How much extra will I have to pay for extra items"? The cost is actually quite reasonable, considering the few extra supplies you will need, which are listed in the requirements area. While it may run you a little more to implement these additions to your costume, they will go a long way to improving accuracy. All needed items can be found for sale on this thread: https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/16-ongoing-sales-project-orders/ While blasters are not required for basic approval, for EIB and Centurion levels they are, and may need upgrades (also listed in the CRL). 3. "I haven't even got my kit yet, is it too early to start planning"? Actually, aiming for Centurion is easiest to do right out of the box. 4. "I have my basic TK approval, can I still get in these programs"? In a word... absolutely! 5. "Are there any "perks" to this extra work and cost"? Besides knowing that you have a great looking set of armor, the 501st and FISD believes you should be deservedly recognized for your achievement(s), and allows you to wear the appropriate embroidered "rocker" badge of rank (available for a very minimum cost) on your shirt, helmet bag, etc., as well as rank decals to put on your armor bin. You will also have access to select "challenge coin" runs, receive (free) a cool certificate for your new rank, and have your title posted below your name in your FISD signature. Plus, once you reach these levels, you will have the extra knowledge to help out those who are looking to apply as well. 6. "Is it hard to apply, and what happens then"? After basic approval, all you do is make sure your armor is up to the standards set forth in the CRL, post a thread with the required photos in the appropriate area (see below), and wait a bit for the D.O.s (Deployment Officers) to address it. (Hint: Studying other people's threads before you submit can be a GREAT help). These are also listed on the main page of the FISD site. While waiting for approval, you will get some comments from others who will offer suggestions and constructive advice to help you out. If you should need any changes, the DOs will let you know, so you can adjust accordingly. Don't be dismayed if you do need changes... it's all for your benefit! After you are approved for EIB, then you can submit for Centurion. EIB https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/19-request-expert-infantryman-status/ Centurion https://www.whitearmor.net/forum/forum/72-request-centurion-status/ Note: You will see some suggestions in the existing submissions/approval requests that, while not actually part of the CRL, are highly suggested items, (for your benefit), such as "flat-head screw heads on the TD (thermal detonator) should be painted black" for Centurion, etc. Those small details all add up to closer screen accuracy. Just remember that the FISD is here to help you every step of the way with whatever other questions you may have, but if you can't seem to find what you are looking for in your research, just post the question, (or PM justjoseph63) and best of luck on your build! Several months ago, Photobucket changed its policies and no longer allows external linking of images for free. This has resulted in FISD (and much of the internet) being littered with Please Update Your Account to Enable 3rd Party Hosting images. Due to this, there are currently several tutorial/how to/reference threads that are currently less useful than if they were properly displaying images. This is not ideal for prospective members looking for information, so we ask that everyone take a moment to go through their posts and update any missing images. There are several alternatives for image hosting, such as Imgur, Flickr, or Google Photos (I personally use and recommend Imgur). For information on how to use Imgur, see this thread With Unquestioned LoyaltyBrien Edick TK92802 "Harbinger" Imperial Attache About the Forums The First Order Stormtrooper forum section is now split into two parts, "TFA Stormtrooper" and "TLJ Stormtrooper". I moved all existing threads into the appropriate section and created subforums especially for build threads, similar to our other costumes. Have fun posting your own builds and discuss about the various armor versions. This is not the only change we did within the last month. Attentive members may have recognized, that we removed lots of outdated pinned threads, updated the description of every forum section, repaired the syntax of dozens of internal links, reformatted unreadable threads, archived old sections like the Magma Trooper (now part of MEPD) and the Imperial Navy Commando (now part of Spec Ops), moved several threads into the right forum section and so on.... Since this is a sisyphean task, we'll continue the work and hope to get some hints from you, the members. Let us know what must be improved! Special thanks go to Harbinger for his amazing help. The amount of approved submissions is increasing thanks to the dedication of those willing to go the "extra mile" toward screen accuracy. Here is a brief description of EIB as written by Paul (Daetrin), our founder: "Expert Infantryman status is not required for members of this detachment. It should be viewed as an optional set of requirements for those who wish to take the accuracy of their costumes to the next level, and be recognized accordingly. We're a costuming club - think of it as an award for costuming excellence and you get the picture. The requirements will not replace or supersede 501st standards, but only serve as an inspiration for the level of accuracy that can be achieved. The standards are meant to be high but achievable..." Besides the added pride you will have in your armor, those reaching this level can purchase exclusive EIB gear (patches, decals, coins etc.) and get a free certificate for your accomplishment.
