Here is a question wrt to return edge - before you put this in a CRL - the question is what problem are you trying to solve? Has this come up a lot?  We can't put every detail in a CRL, so usually put ones where people have issues.

Good point. I actually thought this was about the rivets. but understand how things get going on other things lol

I put the volume around half to 3/4. I think once I put it at full volume and did have some feedback.

So your speaker is actually in the ab and not the chest? How high volume do you set yours? I always seem to get feedback on mine  if I'm about 3/4 volume. I wonder if moving it to the ab will reduce feedback

I was getting feedback so I added foam in the helmet, it helped out a ton! Also, the mic sits at the bridge of my nose. those mics don't need to be at your mouth as long as the mic is directed the right way. the feedback can be caused from the noise bouncing off the inside of the helmet and back into the mic

    Hey guys,

Andrew – can you please update the first post so that there is a list of changes and their status as the first part?  It will keep things clean for tracking.

Any changes should be in keeping with the spirit of the awards, e.g.

EI = a step up from base CRL that can be done for a low to moderate cost, and a moderate amount of effort.  Parts/changes should be easy to come by.
Centurion = as good as we can get it and builds upon L1/L2 requirements.

Thus we’d never want to put something in EI that is very hard to do, or requires an extensive mod or a part that is very hard to get or expensive.

Also, realize that we can’t include every possible permutation or costume flubs, e.g. just because there is a single TK on screen that does not have a holster doesn’t mean we’ll allow them to be optional, and just as there is – on BluRay freeze frame – gaffers tape and paint boo-boos doesn’t mean we’ll allow them either.

CRLs should be pretty static and are usually done once a year for major changes.  The ones we are doing monthly are usually small adds to L2/L3 that shouldn’t really affect people who’s builds are in flight.  L1 items again if monthly are usually small items.

The “official stance” is really whatever the DL & LMO agree on.  Ultimately, the CRLs are owned by the LMO team and as they have trust in DLs, they allow the DL’s to make changes directly.  Since I’ve been involved with the CRL process for over a decade and have written or re-written dozens of CRLs across 3 detachments, they’ve been pretty good about letting me update them directly.  At some point it would be great to have a trusted FISD staff member as back-up, as at some point I’ll want to pull an Albin and retire from day-to-day.

For ROTJ for the rivets on the shoulders, this is why it is a case where we start with making it optional for those who want to do it, and would only make it mandatory if for instance we only find one person without them.

As noted, we do move quickly on FISD mainly as we have a very mature and seasoned team in place.  I was reading chatter over at one detachment where most staff were pretty new and had little idea as to the CRL process, and as a result they spent a lot of time churning on this.

For the CRL models, we change them as we get better models is really all there is to it.

As for text vs. pictures, I’ve been a GML for 10+ years and can certainly say that neither on their own is adequate.  The reality is that neither can really stand on their own, and if GMLs are confused to me this is a failure of training new GMLs.  Sad that some garrison's just aren't that squared away.

Huge thank you for this insight!

Nice job Jon!  The only things that stood out for me was the black space (between the shoulder bells and chest at the front) and the sizing of the biceps and forearms.  Like Dan mentioned, they look fairly loose (too much girth).  I don't know if this will affect basic approval (depends on your GML), but it will hinder movement while you are trooping.  That extra bit of paint on the frown (as per Dan) would not hurt either.

As far as any dressing or alignment issues - yeah, you definitely want someone in the know to help with pictures.  A few adjustments here and there before the pictures may solve a number of issues noted above (except for the belt - Nice catch, Jordan).  My perfectionist wife helped me out during pictures - I pretty much owe my Centurion approval to her ;)

Again, nice job on the armor.

My wife was the exact same way lol. I would be turned around for a picture and feel a tug, then reset for the photo again and feel a tug somewhere else. lol. she wanted my cover strips on point, nothing a mm off. for the most part everything went smooth. but I felt you was being more aggressive with it than I would have been. but when I make it to Centurion it will be owed to her eye for detail

    Looks great. Nice Job!

    should be an easy approval.

My only future critique would be to change the TD screws to pan head instead of flat.

    Move Along!

The screws I am using were sent to me by either @justjoseph63 or @ukswrath, I ordered a set from Joseph and Tony sent some with his TD clips, so I believe they are L3, might just be the angle of the photo

This is a nice idea in theory but could cause issues.  We have so much more information now on our costumes then we ever have.  I mean look at the ROTJ CRL and the potential changes there.  The CRL photos should barely be updated unless new information about the costume arises.  Remember they are the standard for approval and ideally there should be one set of high quality photos taken that really depict that costume and that is it.  Then all costume applications should be compared to that one high quality standard.

The FISD is already criticized for changing the CRLs too often by some.  Even though the CRLs that have been changed have been done so with careful oversight based on facts.  Adding unnecessary yearly changes would only add to that frustration and add fuel for the haters.

The only "yearly change" I suggested would be that of the person in the photo. And if the person is held to the same standard, why would anyone complain. it would be set up like any other award, there would be criteria and it awarded by the members of this admin. Changing to photo shouldn't really matter to anyone as long as that photo is held to the same standard as all other photos. if the photo is there to help with basic approval then you aren't really having any other expectations of the costume itself than to be just that, basic. But if you add the fact that someone can be awarded the honor of being that reference photo, its kinda cool. To be able to display your work to the entire community, let alone be the bases of which others copy. I know it would probably be difficult to do, but nominations and such should go with it. again it was just a suggestion, I haven't been around long so im still learning the ends and outs. hope to be high ranking one day and do justice to the franchise we all know and love.

I recently got a few B-grade pieces off of RWA. Can't fault the service..and the pieces themselves-lets just say these B grades are better than some other vendors "A" material...

When you say "Cant fault the service", do you mean that you didn't order the B grade but got them? I am trying to order a full kit (Minus bucket) for the build. I have spoken with AM, but he claimed they rarely have anything come out wrong, due to the awesome equipment they use. I figured I would try and get the parts that a vendor couldn't really use, and be able to help them get some of those parts out of the shop, or saved from the trash

  8. Does anyone know a good vender to go to for grade B armor? someone who might sell it when they have it, but is still a nice vetted vender. I don't want to cheap out and get some crap. I am going to do a Commander Gree TK, but don't really need a 100% pull due to the character not being canon.

**Side note, Gree didn't die, he pulled his head in like a turtle to his armor right before that dirty jedi Yoda tried to kill him. LONG LIVE GREE!!!

Thanks in Advance my brothers and sisters!

Glen is correct, we do have control over our CRL's, as should all detachments.  I also think we probably move faster than most when it comes to revision, if you consider last year and into this year there is always conversation sparking up on one of our many costumes and we believe in  making all changes for the better.

Once we are satisfied that the changes and the language is right, then Paul will do his part and get them instated.

As a side note, GML's are now formally advised to use a combination of the wording and images within the CRL's, so some of these changes will potentially need new images also added to the CRL.

Do we need to look at the EI and Centurion photo check lists to make sure they are up to date as well.

Extreme thanks for this rundown. I'm not sure why the higher ups complain about the JRS then. I have seen so much talk there about how they aren't asked about the CRL. hmmmm maybe they just aren't in the look. I do think it would be cool to maybe update the CRL photos, maybe once a year, as a way to recognize someone for their hard work on their armor, but not sure how we would go about that, or if the legion would even approve something like that

  10. I have been busy trying to get this helmet setup.  I think i got it, although i dont like the fan noise, but i will live with it. hoping that once i get Troopertalk going it wont be too bad. and i need to get bluetooth headphones and transmitter for the hearing assist, these speaks are ok, but i had headphones in and man what a difference. but the speakers will do for now.

  11. Well I came here to learn right!?! can someone tell me what needs to be done for the CRL to change? I see in the JRS forum they claim they aren't even consulted about CRL changes. is there something we as the FISD can actually do? or is it up in the air and we have to hope it lands right? you would think with as large as the 501st has gotten, the heads would want to leave it up to each detachment to write the CRL and submit it to the board

how often does the CRL change, or how often can it change?

  12. Was doing some sifting around the forum and found this. @Jack the Jaeger, are you still interested in becoming a trooper. I did a name search in the 501st and you are not yet a member. wondering what happened to you, as we are in the same garrison, just wanted to see what was going on. Let us know if you need anything, or what might be holding you up and we can help get you going!

Have you guys tried industrial velcro? I use it in all my helmets, with and without the bracket, works great for vibration isues. With my cooling bracket system adding the foam also helps to eliminate vibration issues.

yes that's what I have holding them in right now. the problem I am seeing is that the fans don't make enough contact with surface area. I think with the bracket they will sit against a flat surface and that will mount inside the helmet. My only worry with the bracket is getting my head in. its a tight squeeze if I have my fans anywhere other than the Hovi area or just under the mouth

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I can't glue the straps down because I have to be able to unsnap them to get in and out of the armor. So I'll probably try the velcro method first. If that still gives me problems I may just switch to canvas.

Just glue the back, not the front. leave the snaps on the front. I am not sure of your size, but I a 6'1" and about 215, and all I need to do to get into my torso is unsnap the cod piece, left the torso up over my head an slide it on. then snap the cod and right snap.

Do you guys think the actual ammo belt is still usable? If I drill out the rivet on the inside connection and patch the holes with ABS paste, can I reattach it lower using the corner? I think Trooper Bay sells separate ammo belts and he is actually located a few miles from me. But his plastic is not a match with this kit, and I would have to paint it.

Yeah. same thing with the ammo belt. Drill out the rivet and fill all holes with paste. then reattach! Look at lots of reference photos to see what it should look like. or check out EIB and Centurion approved Costumes to see how theirs looks. Sometimes people can make big mistakes by going off what they like, and not what is Canon. You have done a great job so far. keep up the good work

  16. 22 minutes ago, salshred said:

Yes the inside part of the ammo pack had to riveted closer to the middle than the corner. the shape of this kits thighs and the bottom ridges are a little wonky. I was able to rivet the outside corner properly, but in order to get it lined up how I wanted, I had to rivet the middle and up a little higher on the thigh. Ill see what the GML says. Replacing the thigh ammo pack is easy enough, but covering up my original rivet holes will be quite the task.

ABS paste will do for that. There is a thread here that I will try and tag you in, as my copy and paste isn't working. there is generally a sight tilt up to that ammo pack, so it doesn't have to exactly sit flush on the armor.
