  1. The basic level (black text) should be the absolute minimum we are willing to approve. If seamless is an acceptable option, we can note that at the blue level. We don't want to make the entry level standard any harder than it needs to be
  2. With the recall vote complete and a new emergency election happening, my time as LMO is short. I'll only be around until the 13th. I'd love to see us get this CRL green and locked down so that our Legacy Ladies don't have to deal with yet another staff turnover slowing them down. We are certainly close. A few images and some wording tweaks and it will be wrapped up.
  3. The Pre Vizsla (season 2) CRL has an a/b type choice for the jetpack. I think we should show both parts, and for each make sure to say that you have to pic one or the other, and that you have to be consistent. Back Plate (comic) * Costume must include one back plate of either comic or statue style. * Must be detailed with comic style plate as shown * Back plate, thermal detonator and boots must all be of consistent style (comic or statue)
  4. The CRL is live on 501st.com. It is yellow, meaning that it has a substantial body of work done but is not yet 100% complete. Here's what we need: - Higher resolution images. I used the placeholder ones from the initial google doc, but I'd like larger ones. We can easily replace those. - Top image (full body front/back, with background edited to pure white) - Details on acceptable accessories ( E-11? Other weapons? ) If we want to include the Gentle Giant style back detail and TD, we'll need pictures of those. On further thought, I wonder if that's complicating things unnecessarily. The debate over that already happened and the Comic style back detail is available. Is it really worth going back to the discussion again, or should we just stick to comic style only? A nice to have would be front/back/left/right images of the helmet. Please take a look / proofread here: http://www.501st.com/databank/Costuming:Legacy_Trooper_Female
  5. If both can be clearly documented, I have no problem with both being acceptable. It would have to go with the backplate (comic back + white TD or statue back and grey/white)
  6. The CRL is in development. There isn't an official one yet. The thread is in the same section on this forum.
  7. Things I'd like to see updated before we go live with it: - on the helmet, the generic ANH language about '3-4 bumps' and 'assorted crazy uneven stripes' should be updated to reflect the legacy style. - is anyone actually using bubble lenses, should we just say flat, or should we leave it to the builder (i'd prefer to specify) - do we really want to approve hand painted, or should we require decals/stencils. i'd say the latter... the hand painted thing was, imo, a rushed OT prop team thing, not an intentional design element. - for the boots, clarify if the sole should be black, white or "doesn't matter", which will answer the question about regular TK boots being acceptable. the legacy troopers i've seen so far have had white soles. - for the backplate, make a detachment-endorsed-decision about comic vs. gentle giant. i'm OK with accepting both, as long as both have clearly documented references. It looks like the Drive document has all of the images we need other than the full length front/back. We can always replace images later, but in order to 'go green' on the crl, we need to have it 100% complete. I'm going to be doing Legion work this evening, so if we can get all of that sorted by around 9pm EST, I should be able to get the CRL online.
  8. The costume has been officially assigned to FISD, and a skeletal CRL is up: http://www.501st.com/databank/Costuming:Legacy_Trooper_Female bzb, if you can email me the document / pics, I can handle getting them online. brian at stormtrooperguy dot com.
  9. I'm hoping to get the CRL draft online in the next couple of days. It seems that there has been a split in effort, with several people working on content. I feel like this costume belongs in FISD, and FISD should define the standard. Here are my thoughts: Regarding the back plate: I personally have no objections to approval being either comic or statue style. I think there are references for both, and it's not insane to suggest that troopers might have different models of armor. I don't think we should call this a face character, Jes Gistang, specifically. I think Legacy Trooper, Female would be better. Having it be a generic character means that there is no potential conflict if 30 people want to wear the suit at the same event. Since it's already been established that a helmet is required for approval, I don't see any advantage to naming Jes specifically. I've seen the greaves in person and they are VERY small... I suspect many people will need a cover strip up the back. I don't see any problem with that. For boots, I agree that "low heel" is better than "flat". Even OT TK boots aren't "flat".
  10. My ears are burning! The first few weeks, should I get voted in, will be about catching up on backlog work. There's going to be a period of awkwardness for a while while the legion sorts out politics. If, in the end, I land there for the long haul, I will definitely want to get a CRL up for Jes asap. I had the pleasure of seeing this kit in person for the first time this weekend, and would want to make sure builders had the reference they need. So... I wouldn't expect movement on day 1, but I do have a soft spot for white armor.
  11. I definitely need to move the counter up on the next one. I thought I had a good plan for that, but then it didn't work out as expected. Also agreed on the scope rail. This one was the prototype, so there are a few issues with it. I've got an aluminum barrel on the way, and that's the one that will be built up carefully. I don't do pressure casting, I'm just reaaaaaally careful when I pour. I powder the molds to help break up surface tension, and have lots of strategically placed vent holes. I'm doing up a bunch for my garrison then passing the molds on to someone else who will be taking over production from then on. Once the weather thaws I'm going to make up some power cylinders. It's just too cold right now for me to be out in the machine shop (aka my garage) Brian
  12. It's a project 2 years in the making, but I finally finished my E11! Well... I still need to weather and clear coat it, but want to make sure the black is fully cured before I do that. What makes this special to me is that it isn't just a kit I bought... it's a kit I made myself. For years now my primary "trooping weapon" has been my real Sterling, with real scope / counter and SaberFreak vintage T track. It's beautiful, but very heavy and an awfully expensive thing to be tromping around at conventions with. In January 2013 I started the process of molding it. I got some extra help from another local SW geek (Greg Chase) who had a cut down Sterling in his garage. He let me borrow it so that I could get the best parts from both of our guns. The road to get here was fun. I started off with silicone putty waste molds. From there I did castings, cleaned those up, then made the real molds. The only part on my kit NOT molded off of something original is the T track. I wasn't going to recast the stuff I got from SaberFreak, so I scratch built some out of sintra: It's not ultra-accurate, but for most people it would be fine. For those that care, they can get something else to replace it. I made it so that it could just be slapped down flat, but heating the ends and pushing them into the holes does give it a nice look. The stock on mine is much thicker than the real one. I wanted it to have a bit more of a chance to survive an impact. I thought about making this part out of rubber, but this seems to work well. The added bulk is on the inside and only visible from this angle: The plugs for the front and back are sized to fit tubing with the correct ID and OD. If the pipe is right, they drop straight in: Overall I'm very happy with how it came out! This last pic in particular shows how sharp the details are. The top is the vintage scope, the bottom is the casting, straight from the mold: Anyway... It's been a long time since I've posted anything here, so I'm excited to have something to share!!
  13. A deathtrooper needs to essentially be an approvable TK with the addition of the weathering. You still have to have quality armor, assembled correctly. That being said, there are some defects you can work around. Say you had a crack in the armor or yellowed plastic that might block a clean TK... you can work that it into the weathering. The Deathtrooper CRL was written to try to prevent people from using it as an excuse to be lazy, while still allowing for reusing armor that may have outlived its usefulness as a standard stormy.
  14. Sorry no-one ever replied to this! I've not really seen a hint of blue in anything, so personally I'd stay away. Browns and greens seem to be the main colors (dirt and mold)
  15. The Deathtrooper is most certainly a Legion approved costume... I was DT#1 (and technically also part of the team that vetted it for Legion approval in the first place). EIB is 100% determined by the detachment. It has no relevance outside of here. But, since the det is looking to hit an EIB target this year, I thought it would be fun to do. If I just need to follow the blue on the CRL I can knock out the few required mods in an evening. I just want to make sure that this is something that has been thought about / that the CRL is correct before doing the work.
  16. I tried searching around but had no luck: Have their been any EIB Deathtroopers yet? I'd like to help toward the EIB goals for the year. My white TK is very close but I'm really more into the deathtrooper. Are the blue bits in the CRL accurate for what we'd want? If so I've got a bit of work, but not much. Plus, being deathtrooper #1, I think it would also be cool to be EIB #1
  17. Excellent! Always great to see more dead troopers walking. Hmm... that would be a fun name for a sub-unit or something. Or a patch. Someone make a patch of that
  18. I was thinking the same thing... Almost everyone will hate it. A few people will push it through and make the suit. There will be a big battle about Legion acceptance. Eventually it will be approved, but most won't like it. 5 years from now, no-one will think anything of an animated TK. One thing I love about this is back at C5, the animated clone troopers panel I was on had a picture of an animated style TK and asked if we'd be seeing those in the 501st someday. Heh. Now here we are, having the conversation. I'm excited about it, and can't wait to see someone suit up in it for the first time.
  19. I bring mine around kids pretty regularly... I don't know if it's a regional thing or what, but in New England at least very few younglings have been anything but entertained, even when I stay totally in character, snarling and biting at them. I've got a ton of photos of me with little ones, often in zombie costumes themselves! I probably wear the DT 6-8 times a year, sometimes more. I'll be trooping it 3-4 more times before the end of the year. We also don't really do the traditional hospital / sick kids type events much in the NEG. We've probably done less than 10 of those in the past 10 years.
  20. I love the paint job! I'm coming up on my 3rd anniversary of having the suit. One thing I've found is that you need to be REALLY careful around the heavily chewed up spots. HIPS and ABS alike crack easily when you score through most of the armor I've had to reinforce mine from behind with spare plastic in a bunch of spots, especially where the damage is near the edges. You may want to save yourself future trouble and do the same.
  21. I don't know where to get the tubing (yet!). I was given a 3 foot length to see if it would work well, and it's proving to be the best plastic option I've seen. I've got to get back with my garrison-mate and find out where it comes from!
  22. In order to make sure the parts all fit together correctly, I need to have a finished barrel to fit them to. That was yesterday's project: I still have to cut the other holes out, but the hard part is done! I used the blaster builder's club template, scaled to match the pipe that I'm using.
  23. poyo is a smooth-on product, so you can get it from them direct or at a reynolds advanced materials store. oddly this is my first foray into making anything from scratch for a stormtrooper. i sculpted/molded/cast all of my clones from head to toe but have always just used TK kits or found items.
  24. For the last few years I've been trooping with my real Sterling. It's great visually, but sucks for my arms... that thing gets HEAVY after a parade! I keep telling myself that I'll make a resin parts kit for do-it-yourself blasters, but haven't gotten there. On top of that I've been sitting on a borrowed Sterling parts kit for ages. Some of the kit parts are better than my rebuilt, and some of my rebuilt is better than the parts kit. Between the two I've got a good base to work from. A local friend tracked down some good tube stock for me. It's acryilic with an OD and ID that is visually a near perfect match to the original. Much closer than PVC, particularly on the ID. My plan is to do 2 phases of molding: The first is to make molds right off of the Sterling. Those castings will be cleaned up and modded to be easy to install as a kit (you'll see what I mean later). Once the parts are cleaned up and ready the final molds will be made. Right... enough words! I started off with Poyo silicone putty on the small parts that would be hard to box mold: I eventually built up quite a pile of wacky little silicone bits: Which resulting in a bunch of similarly wacky little resin bits: Those bits then get cleaned up. For example, the magazine gets a nice curve carved into the back so that it will mount correctly on the tube: And the tip gets a plug built in so that it fits neatly: This is where I am at now: Still working on sanding out some of the seams / filling undercuts & holes that pass all the way through, and generally getting the stuff ready to be a clean kit. Once this is all done I'm going to adapt some of the parts to fit a Hasbro too.
