  1. Painting them white cause the paint to chip off and crack over time when trooping. That's when the boots get really nice just like in the movies I've heard of people spray painting their boots as well.
  2. The 70th Explorers Garrison lost a valued member on July 12, 2015. Charlie "SnoopyTrooper" Brown was a long-time member of the 501st Legion, since 2008, and has been involved in hundreds of events since joining us. He showed great courage despite his personal illness, and continued trooping until his last few months with us. His loyalty, devotion, and friendship will always be remembered. Here's to you, TK-5648, who joins the ranks of our Eternal Legionnaires. Buckets off to a steadfast friend and valued member of the Legion family. It is with great pride that we enter Charlie Brown into the Hall of Eternal Legionaries. Buckets off troopers. With Unquestioned Loyalty, Clint TK-16311 "cm325i" FISD Imperial Propaganda Department Hi all! For this month's newsletter the Imperial Propaganda Machine (IPM) has packed in a Brian Muir Edition Newsletter for you loyal Imperial Citizens. In this issue the IPM has managed to contact sculptor Brian Muir to share with us his experiences sculpting iconic figures like Darth Vader and the Stormtrooper. The Canadian Garrison has also sent out an invitation for a massive Stormtrooper convention meetup. This newsletter also features a trooper testimony on how meeting young cancer survivors can change one's outlook on life. We've also put up a teaser for an E-11 Blaster build reference guide that is soon to launch! We would also like to thank Clint TK-16311 for producing the awesome special edition banner for this issue. We hope you enjoy this special edition as much as we have enjoyed making it! Update on Roger Christian's Black Angel Concept art of Black Angel by Martina Pilcerova Remember when we did a Q&A with Roger Christian and discussed his film Black Angel which accompanied the screening of Empire Strikes Back? Well as of 17th July 146% of the original target was funded for the re-release of the film. Looks like things are going well and more goodies are annouced as the funding gets higher. Excerpt of Black Angel from website: 35 years ago, Star Wars Set Designer Roger Christian came to George Lucas with a script called Black Angel. Lucas commissioned it on the spot. That 25 minute short, made with a tiny budget and an even smaller crew, played in front of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back screenings in England, Scotland and Australia. It went on to inspire a host of fantasy cinema classics, from Star Wars itself to John Boorman's Excalibur. And then it was lost. Having been to a fantastic reception, we’re bringing Black Angel back as a feature film. Think Game of Thrones meets Valhalla Rising, Excalibur meets Lord of the Rings. A powerful tale of ancient Celtic magic and Nordic Paganism, it’ll be gritty, dirty and heroic – everything great fantasy should be. To find out more about this film and see updates from Roger Christian, visit this link: https://www.indiegog...ure-film#/story With Unquestioned Loyalty, Evan Loh TK-24127 "evan_loh" FISD Public Relations Officer Hi Troopers, greetings from the Canadian Garrison! This year is going to be an exciting one for all of us who love STAR WARS! Not only are we getting a new season of Rebels, we get to see the next chapter in the story that happened a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away! Oh, and I’d like to take this opportunity to bring up another exciting event. FAN EXPO! Fan Expo Canada is an annual comic convention that occurs in Toronto at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. It’s more than a comic book convention; it’s a celebration of all kinds of things; Sci-fi, horror, anime, gaming, and cosplay all come together for four days in the third largest fan celebration in North America. Over 120,000 people attend the con that takes place across TWO full sized convention hall sized buildings. This fantastic event happens September 3rd through 6th. We’d love to have as many Troopers join us as possible, and we’re after TKs in a BIG way. The Stormtrooper March on Saturday is the thing to behold, and we’d like to see as many TKs as possible. Here is a link to the event’s website. It covers hotel information, as well as travel options. http://fanexpocanada.com/ If you check them out on Facebook, you can see right away the role the 501st plays in their plans! https://www.facebook...ocanada?fref=ts We’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to join in the fun! Last year we had over 120 Troopers from multiple garrisons and our founder/LCO, Albin Johnson, all take part in this monster event. Check out what he had to say about his experience with the Canadian Garrison and Fan Expo. http://www.starwars....egion-garrisons Our own FISD DL, Eric Brager details his firsthand experience being at FanExpo last year in his troop report. http://www.whitearmo...p-log/?p=363564 Even Mary Franklin, former Fan Relations with LFL, spoke about her wonderful experience with the Canadian Garrison here at Fan Expo. http://www.starwars....o-fan-expo-2014 From YouTube, here is a great snapshot of the 501st Experience. Oh, and I forgot to mention the cost…for only $25.00CAD and a commitment to “work†two hours per day of attendance at the 501st booth, you get a pass for all four days of the event. Have questions? We have answers! Nothing would make us happier than to have to ask to get additional passes from the event staff! Let us know if you can make the trip. Thanks, Roy Mitchell - Commanding Officer, Canadian Garrison Charles “Clamps†Bowes – Executive Officer, Canadian Garrison With Unquestioned Loyalty, Andrea Loar TK-6093 "Pickles" Imperial Attache & Canadian Garrison PR Minion This month's Troop of the Month goes to Montreal Comic Con 2015. Thank you to Pickles (Andrea) for the initial post, Spycee (Alex) for additional photos and Tolo (Eric) for the group shot. This is what happens when you anger a Wookie The (huge) afterparty at a microbrewery in Old Montreal had custom menu's just for us! It's a shame to see they had to close their Alderaan location! $4229 was raised for Make-A-Wish, well done troopers! With Unquestioned Loyalty, Glen Rhodes TK-85421 "gmrhodes13" Imperial Attache Citizens and denizens of the Empire, in this issue we have been given the honour to interview the man who brought to life the likes of Darth Vader and the Stormtrooper from the concept drawings of Ralph McQuarrie. His name is Brian Muir. He was tasked to sculpt the mask, helmet and armour pieces of Darth Vader, the Stormtrooper armour, Death Star Droid and more. Brian's works were not exclusive exclusive to Star Wars; Brian also sculpted the Space Jockey in Alien and multiple sculptures and backdrops in James Bond films, Harry Potter, Gaurdians of the Galaxy and many more! Going back to Star Wars, let's find out what went through his mind during the creation of the movie we've come to know and love so much! Early prototype Stormtrooper for test shots. IPM: How did you get into sculpting? Brian: I found I had a flair for art at school. Then I was lucky enough to be offered a 4 year sculpting apprenticeship at Elstree Studios ( then ABPC Studios). IPM: How were you first contacted to work for Star Wars? And at a time where nobody knew how big a hit Star Wars would be what were your first impressions on this space movie? Brian: I received a phone call at the beginning of January 1976 from my old mentor, Arthur Healey. He asked me if I would like a start on a sci-fi film to sculpt some strange futuristic characters. My first impressions, which were also many of the crew, were that it wouldn't be very successful. As it turns out we couldn't have been more wrong. We were astounded when we saw the finished film at the crew showing and showed our appreciation with a standing ovation. IPM: You had to bring to life McQuarrie's concept sketches into something wearable and used practically on set. Could you talk us through your thoughts and intentions as you were fleshing out the likes of Darth Vader, Stormtrooper, CZ3 and Death Star Droid. CZ3 in Sandcrawler Brian: I used Ralph McQuarrie's concept paintings for Darth Vader's body armour. But the mask and helmet design evolved from discussions with George Lucas, John Barry and John Mollo. I was given a small lined drawing of the mask and helmet at a three quarter angle. Being told the character was a villain I knew he had to look menacing. My job as a sculptor was to make the design work in 3D from the 2D drawing. The main aim was how it all looked aesthetically rather than built for comfort. The Stormtrooper armour was sculpted to look as though it was a suit of armour. But it was modelled in sections so that it was practical for extras of varying sizes to wear. As 50 suits were required it was decided to use vacuum forming to produce the suits in the allotted timeframe. The Death Star droid was one of my favourite sculpts and although he only appears briefly on screen it seems many fans also like the character. Brian sculpting the Death Star Droid. Death Star Droid IPM: When compared to the concept drawings, Darth Vader and the Stormtrooper armour look slightly different. Were these designs decisions or practical reasons? Brian: Yes I think the changes to the design of Darth Vader's mask and helmet were to suit the powerful presence required of this villainous dominant character. With the Stormtrooper the main changes were made for practical purposes. Stormtroopers line up aboard the Death Star IPM: Did you work closely with George Lucas or did he give you free reign on sculpting the moulds? Brian: No although George Lucas gave the final approval, I worked closely with the production designer, John Barry. Just to clarify a point - I sculpted the armour in clay which was then moulded and cast in plaster. I carved the plaster to sharpen the details. It was then remoulded and cast in fibreglass which were used as the moulds for vacuum forming. (From left to right) Darth Vader, Dave Prowse (also Darth Vader) and Brian Muir IPM: Liz Moore sculpted the Stormtrooper helmet. Did you work with her as well? And what are your impressions on her interpretation of the concept drawings into the moulds? From concept to sculpt Brian: Yes I worked with Liz for the month of January 1976 until she left the film. My impressions are that she did a very professional job in the clay sculpt and made the helmet the iconic piece it is today. IPM: You also had to sculpt parts of C3P0 and get them to correct size they were sculpted on Anthony Daniels. Was it more difficult or any different sculpting on a human being compared to what you were used to? Early concepts of C3P0 Brian: It was very unusual, in fact unique, to sculpt directly onto a human being. All of C3P0 was sculpted onto the plaster cast made of Anthony Daniels by Liz Moore. At a very late stage, after Liz had left the film, it was arranged for me to sculpt the details of the hands directly on the back of Anthony Daniel's hands. Liz Moore IPM: You were contracted to work on Star Wars: The Force Awakens as well. Only if you're allowed to mention, what did you work on in the film. If not what are your thoughts on all the sets and props given that they moved back to more practical and physical objects in the film just like the Original Trilogy? Brian: Unfortunately, due to contractual restrictions, I can't talk about the work I did on the new film. But I'm sure the fans are going to be very pleased that they have gone back to the more realistic visuals of built sets and props. I feel sure the film will be a huge success. IPM: What are your thoughts on the new The Force Awakens Stormtroopers? Do you consider it a sensible evolution from your iconic design and a worthy successor to the Stormtroopers of 30 years ago? Or is the new design way off base? The Force Awakens First Order Stormtrooper Brian: It's early days to have strong opinions and preferences. I will reserve judgement until I see them in action on the big screen. But obviously the original Stormtrooper is always going to be close to my heart for so many reasons. IPM: Since you are the "Creator", would you ever consider working with someone to develop your own line of armour based off your ANH sculpts? Brian: I am already endorsing RS Prop Master's armour that is directly from my original ANH sculpt, which fans are excited to own. Brian Muir Edition Stormtrooper Armour *Photos used courtesy of Brian Muir* The FISD greatly appreciates Brian for sharing his experience with us and we look forward to meeting him in conventions and seeing his upcoming works in Star Wars: The Force Awakens! For more of Brian Muir's work please visit his website: http://www.brianmuirvadersculptor.com/ With Unquestioned Loyalty, The Imperial Propaganda Machine For this month's edition of Memoirs, I am stepping up and sharing with all of you what I imagine will be one of the most emotionally charged Troops that I will ever be a part of. I can't say for certain though because, well...Read on, you'll see. Memoirs of a Stormtrooper Dark CMF - Dallas/Fort Worth CureSearch Walk April 25, 2015, Texas Motor Speedway I learned about the 501st a long time before I joined, as I˜m sure many of you did also. We all have our reasons for joining. Naturally, a love of Star Wars or at the very least a love of the Imperial costumes seen in Star Wars is more than likely on everyone's list. For me, a major part of the appeal and what ultimately convinced me to go down this road were the pictures that I'd constantly see of Troopers interacting with children, particularly those with illnesses or disabilities, and the sheer joy that those children experienced during those moments. From the moment I started on my TK journey. I'd hoped that one day, I would have one of those moments. Let's face it, every day of every troop is different, and you never know what's going to happen when you put on your armor, and head out to meet the Empire's adoring citizens. On the morning of Saturday, April 25th, like every other Troop I've attended, I had no idea what was in store for me, but I wouldn't trade that day for anything. The event was the Dallas/Fort Worth CureSearch Walk, an event that raised $45,527 for children's cancer funding, and took place at the Texas Motor Speedway. When the event began, it was much like any other. Music playing, people taking pictures with us. A group of people were being led in warm-ups which included dancing, was joined by a TI (TIE Pilot) and a TK. It was a tremendous scene and all in attendance were having a great time. Then, then came the moments that typically cause Troopers to remark "I was glad I was wearing a helmet." Believe me; I was glad to be wearing my helmet. The official program began with an introduction to the event lineup for the day, followed by a bit of information about the CureSearch Walk program. Immediately following that introduction, family members and friends of children who had lost their battles with cancer during the previous year made their way to the stage and the area in front of it to release balloons in memory of those precious children. The number of balloons was simply staggering to see, and to hear one of the mothers get up, and with a beaming smile, thank everyone for attending after a moment of silence was heart-breaking. The event, however, was not going to linger on the losses, as the next group called to the stage was nearly as large as the group of family and friends who had just been there. This group was children who had beaten their various cancers and were in remission. There were boys and girls of all races and ethnicities, ranging in age from probably four years old to early teens. Each of these amazing children was presented with a golden medal that read simply "Hero." If the moment of silence for the lost children was deafening, the round of applause for these children is perhaps best described as Earth-shattering. TK-76626 (Left), and TK-51878 (Right) of the Star Garrison, at the Texas Motor Speedway shortly after completing the CureSearch Walk. Shortly after that, everyone gathered up in groups of people wearing different colored t-shirts (depicting which child's "team" they were a part of) in preparation for the walk. When the walk began, the Imperial delegation lined both sides of the start line, and high-fived everyone as they began their (approximately) 2.5 mile walk. At this point in time, we had the option of leaving for the day, or taking part in the walk. Both myself (TK-51878) and TK-76626 (Darth Dadio) chose to take part in the walk. We were joined by two Cadets who were attending their first event as handlers. During the walk, we had several great interactions with many children, holding hands with two young girls (probably about five years old each) for about a quarter mile while we walked, many high-fives, and photos taken with the walkers, and a lot of "thank yous" from participants. With about a quarter of a mile to go, we had nearly caught up to a group of young walkers wearing the bright yellow shirts of Team Olivia. As we closed to within about 90 feet of them, three little girls with their faces painted (about 7 years old, I'd say) saw us, turned around, and ran towards us. I happened to be a few steps out in front, so they approached me first. As they approached, one of them asked "Can we have a hug?" I immediately saw the sun glinting off of a small golden medal hanging from her neck. There was no way that she wasn't getting that hug, if it meant breaking some part of my armor in the process. I thought quickly that I should kneel on my right (non-sniper plate) knee, to hopefully minimize any possible damage, and stepped forward with my left leg so that I could get my right knee to the ground, and it worked. All three of them ran right to me, and the one in the middle asked if I liked their masks. I told them that they were the coolest masks I'd ever seen. The one on my left (wearing the medal) said that my mask was the coolest mask she'd ever seen. I told her that her medal was the best thing that I'd ever seen at which point in time, the girl to my right finally spoke. She rather quietly said "I gave her my medal, because when I was sick she was still one of my friends, so she is my hero." It was at that moment that I choked back a few tears and said "didn't you ask for a hug?" At that point in time John Simpson (one of the first-time handlers) managed to capture a photo that was shared by the FISD and the 501st Legion on their Facebook pages. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia survivor Olivia (yellow shirt on the left) and friends pause during the CureSearch Walk for a quick TK Hug. You never know what is going to happen when you put on your armor and go out into the public eye, but I'm willing to bet that for every photo you've seen of a Trooper interacting with a child, there is a story very similar to this one to be shared. Always be ready for a significant emotional event to happen for you when you attend a charity based event Troopers. IPM: Since you are the "Creator", would you ever consider working with someone to develop your own line of armour based off your ANH sculpts? Brian: I am already endorsing RS Prop Master's armour that is directly from my original ANH sculpt, which fans are excited to own. The FISD greatly appreciates Brian for sharing his experience with us and we look forward to meeting him in conventions and seeing his upcoming works in Star Wars: The Force Awakens! With Unquestioned Loyalty, The Imperial Propaganda Machine For this month's edition of Memoirs, I am stepping up and sharing with all of you what I imagine will be one of the most emotionally charged Troops that I will ever be a part of. As mentioned in the last newsletter the Female Legacy Trooper CRL was finished earlier this year. I still have to update the images with higher resolution versions but more importantly with it going green Garrison Membership Liaisons (GML) can now approve the costume locally. The CRL was written out on the open with input from the FISD community. This was a fun process to participate in and watch. That process is happening all over again with The Force Awakens (TFA) First Order Stormtrooper CRL in the detachment area of the forum. We have some words down but there is still a lot of work to be done. My hope is to have a version of this CRL up on the 501st site in early July. This will allow the first wave of TFA troopers to be approved paving the way for the next group. Also written up in the last newsletter is we received confirmation via a Vanity Fair article that the TFA TKs are in fact bad guys. I am quite relieved that here is no ambiguity about the antagonists in TFA. Recently the detachment voted on (only 29 votes?!) enacting a CRL change policy. As it stands now there is no formal process on the Legion level for a Detachment Leader to propose changes to the Legion Membership Officer. To ensure that every future FISD DL follows the same procedure this policy was created. The two main takeaways from this policy are: Every change must be communicated to the detachment by the DL regardless of the method Having the detachment vote on a CRL change is the preferred way of modifying our standards. Quote Quote There is a discussion currently open in the detachment area of the forum about removing the Centurion requirement for the kidney notch. I alone proposed this change on principle. I alone proposed this and I may be the only one who feels this way among the staff. My first reason for proposing a vote on it is that the change went in without the detachment voting on it. This is of course the discression of the DL (see above). AT the time there was enough uproar over it that I feel a vote is required. This requirement goes against the spirit of the Centurion program and starts to creep into the tenuous area of prop replication. I am drawing a line in the sand with this one requirement. Additionally our CRLs are already too restrictive and often a barrier to people leveling up with their armor. Why make it harder for members to reach Centurion for something that no fan is ever going to notice? While there are many level 3 requirements that fans cannot see, this small thing is one too many for this Detachment Leader. My assertion is that when cut into a kidney plate that does not have the notch it ends up looking worse than if there was no notch at all. Seeing as most of the armor out there has no notch I believe it to be unnecessary extra work for someone trying to achieve Centurion. As you read this please also bear in mind that I am the DL who made it so overlap construction was no longer allowed for Centurion. It is not a matter of me not caring about accuracy, this is a matter of caring about the state of our CRLs. To remove any and all ambiguity our new LMO added explicit wording to each and every FISD CRL that the FX helmet is no longer permitted for new approvals. The other tidbit that was removed last year from the FISD CRLs is the mention of the MRCE/eFX helmets needing modification for basic approval. I will be adding that wording back in at my discretion later this week. In other news racing shirt orders will start up later this week, patches are due to arrive around the same time, and you'll likely see FISD hats for sale in the middle of the summer. Stay tuned for all your swag needs. Racing Shirt V2 teaser! Lee, who was suffering from respiratory problems, passed away in Hospital on Sunday (6-7-15). A veteran of World War II, Lee’s acting career began in the late 1940’s, but shot to stardom in the following decade thanks to several starring roles in the Hammer Horror film series, including Frankenstein’s Monster, the Mummy, and of course, Count Dracula — a role he would go on to play 10 times in his long career before finally laying it to rest in the 1970’s. With over 280 acting credits to his name, Lee’s career is far too dense and varied to list in its entirety, but he was defined by his villainous roles: aside from Dracula, he is of course known for roles like Lord Summerisle The Wicker Man (a role Lee considered to be his finest), Francisco Scaramanga in the 1974 James Bond film The Man With The Golden Gun, and more recently as Saruman the White in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, as well as Sith Lord Count Dooku in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. He was knighted in 2009 for his services to Drama. Adapted from i09.com. For the complete article with videos, click here. With Unquestioned Loyalty, FISD Imperial Propaganda Department "May the 4th" Troop at Disney World's Hollywood Studios Living in the Florida Garrison, we get a lot of very special troops. Don't get me wrong... I love all the charity events we do but as a SW fan, this one was incredible. We received a request from Disney for "20 classic Stormtroopers. Special requirements: Disney requested that these Stormtroopers be “the best of the best, as close to uniform symmetry as is possible." Of course, I jumped at the chance to be a part of this troop with no idea what we were required to do. They split us into two groups by size, one morning and one afternoon squad. I have to say that Disney really treats us right! They put us in this killer Prop Room for us to change and rest in. They also fed us Jersey Mike's subs, cookies (gotta have um right?) and drinks. I was in the first squad and after a brief practice we were off on our 20 minute march through the park. Our officer (A Disney cast member) was fantastic as he barked out Imperial decrees and ordered hecklers "shot." We had 4 different routes through the park and all the while, none of the park guests knew we were coming! We stopped a few times for photos with the guests which was interesting. There were so many people that pretty much only "selfies" could be taken. The best part was that even though there were no official shows, appearances or postings about any special Star Wars events happening in the park that day, EVERYONE was wearing some sort of Star Wars swag!!! I couldn't have been more proud to stand there and pose with soooo many fans that were celebrating "May The 4th" in their own way. So many shocked and happy looks from the guests as we marched by...simply incredible! I will never forget this troop and to be able to share it with my Florida Garrison TK brothers (and one from Georgia) is all the more special! Thank you Disney for having us out to support the Saga we all hold so dear. I was honored to patrol your park that day! Not only did we get to see the new TFA (The Force Awakens) Stormtroopers but we got to see the unveiling of the second trailer for the new Star Wars film. The cast was there and so was BB-8! And did you hear the shock and awe from the crowd and BB-8 literally rolled down the stage? We also got to view upclose on screen used variants of the new troopers of the First Order troopers such as the Flametroopers and the Snowtroopers! Not forgetting the annoucement of the next spinoff film as well: Rogue One. Looks like we haven't seen the last of classic Original Trilogy props and costumes. Seeing so many new things that yet feels familiar together with others beings about an amazing feeling. The FISD made a blast especially showing up in our new TFA Stormtrooper outfits for the first time. With that many Stormtroopers around the FISD kept peace and order around the convention. The Emperor will be pleased. There was a great turnout for the FISD and a photo was taken with Legion Founder Albin Johnson and Stormtrooper Armor Sculptor Brian Muir. This month TK-73511 Clive Barzillia shares about his experience as a Yellow Stormtrooper. Yes you heard that right. Here's a picture: But why? Read on to find out... Clive: On Friday the 6th of March I suited up in the Yellow Armour for the first time in public for an event that happens all over the UK called Big Yellow Friday. I was supported by the UK Garrison to help many BYF volunteers raising awareness and money in Birmingham City Centre for the Children's Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF). Our son Isaac, was born with a rare liver disease, biliary atresia, in which bile accumulates in the liver causing irreparable scarring and liver failure. At 5 months Isaac suffered liver failure and desperately needed a transplant. After diagnosis and being entered on the transplant list, it was a matter of hours before Birmingham Children's Hospital found Isaac a new liver through the organ donation register and saved his life. That was in 2010 and now, 5 years later he is doing amazingly well. One of the most important aspects of newborn liver disease is early diagnosis. It’s very important to detect the condition within 30 days after birth. The CLDF’s campaign called Yellow Alert promotes this early detection. To help this campaign I decided to combine our family’s love of Star Wars and all things UKG to build a Stormtrooper in the CLDF colour of bright yellow. This first official outing for the yellow armour was an amazing experience, drawing crowds of people to ask “Why is that trooper yellow??†Normally in a squad of white troopers, such attention is for the group not for the individual. The Armour stands out in the sunshine and definitely works to promote the campaign. The Transplant Games is the next planned event. The armour is Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (ANH) 'Stunt' and has been built to the UKG standards of clearance. I was supported in my build by the generosity of Andy Rogers (BFA), Clothears Costumes and Karin Sonnenschein. I would like to thank: the other troopers for signing up to the event, the UK Garrison for all their support and promotion and the CLDF for allowing me to represent the Yellow alert. 9. From the DL In Memoriam Legion News Celebrity Q&A Memoirs of a Stormtrooper Advanced Tactics Awards Follow FISD Aloha kakou, The first quarter of 2015 has been jam packed in both my Legion life and personal life. I am looking forward to things calming down after Celebration 7. Thank you for your patience as we get FISD back up and running after a rocky start. During the Detachment Leader election Q&A process a recurring theme of the tone of our forums cropped up. I tried to address it in my answers but other burning hot subjects prevented me from diving as deeply into it as I would have liked. At some point shortly afterward a member announced he was walking away from FISD. He was tired of what he called elitism. I promised to respond to his concerns and like a jackass, I never did. Rather than write something in his thread about leaving FISD I feel it is appropriate to write something here. It is my opinion that "elitism" is a misnomer. To me elitism is about feeling superior and excluding others because of it. While there are a few people who feel they are better than others, the larger problem FISD has seen is less about actual elitism and more about members being condescending dicks. The irony here is that the examples I have seen of this dickishness usually occurs when someone is trying to provide some manner of helpful information. Here is my promise to the brotherman who wants to leave and to the entire FISD membership. I will not tolerate anyone being anything less than professional and polite. I have trouble with people taking me too seriously here because more often than not I am being sarcastic (this is not one of those times.) Please take into account that not everyone is well understood in text and to look at their intentions instead of what you may perceive to be a negative tone. We also have to account for miscommunication due to brevity in this age of tapatalk and mobile devices. Outside of people seeming like dicks due to an economy of words, I will not stand for it. FISD has a Provost Marshal. Once elected appointed a Deputy PM as well. I hope to appoint one more in another time zone. It is their job to keep an eye on everything looking for people who break the forum rules. I rely on them to keep things civil. My promises and the actions of the staff are only part of stopping people from being jerks. I need you, the membership of our forums, to help. If you sense someone is being less than professional or polite tell me or the Provost Marshals. Send me an email or PM and to say "That person was being a jerk." If need be I will put my pointy white leather foot down. From my vantage point things are a little more fun these days on FISD. Levity is the key to changing the tone of our forums. If you disagree with me I want to hear it. In addition, if you have any ideas on how to make FISD more fun please let me know. My email and PM door is always open. I added a some new members to the staff this year in the hopes of effecting change in tone with a fresh attitudes. Please welcome or welcome back your FISD 2015 staff: Executive Officer - Squeaky Deployment Officer - Gazmosis Provost Marshal - captsafe66 Deputy Provost Marshal - Tolo Public Relations Officer - evan_loh FISD Ambassador - Dark CMF Membership Officer - NoVATie Merchandise Officer - TK4205 Web Server Admins - svache and Locitus FISD Founder - Daetrin We are working on a handful of formal projects for 2015. This is the short list of he major ones: CRL change policy TiKipedia Merch merch merch merch Attache program improvements There are plans for more and different merch this year but we are waiting for after C7 to start that up. A coin run is planned soon as well as patches. A second run of the racing shirt may be needed in Q2 as well. I heard the cry from the membership about wanting more stuff and I promise to deliver. Please remain patient with us on this subject. One bit of news that you may not have noticed is that the Female Legacy Trooper costume has come under the FISD umbrella. Say what you want about expanded universe vs. OT, I feel strongly that FISD has the resources to be the best steward of this costume. I will be making a bigger announcement once the CRL goes green. For those of you going to Celebration 7 in Anaheim California I hope to meet as many FISD folks as possible. I may be wearing an orange lei for the majority of the time. Please introduce yourself if you see me out and about. The details for the C7 FISD Stormtrooper Social are listed below. There are other things going on that night but please stop by for a few minutes. The more of us that shake hands and put a face to a nickname the easier it will be to get along over the interwebs. With Aloha and Unquestioned Loyalty, Eric Brager TK-9674 "Darth Aloha" Detachment Leader We honor the fallen On the 10th of March, 2015, Lance Moore (TK-31088) of the 501st Legion's Georgia Garrison passed from this World. Lance is known best for his rich, jovial spirit and for bringing fun to any event. He was in Australia to realize his Life’s dream of reenacting scenes from Mad Max: The Road Warrior when the unrelated accident occurred. A fund has been established to aide his family in bringing his body home and other related expenses. (by Fleetfang on 501st.com) On the 26th of March, 2015, Scott Boynton (TD-78947) of the 501st Legion’s Star Garrison entered into the next Life. Becoming a Sandtrooper in the 501st was a life long dream and brought him great joy. Scott was known for his generosity and celebration of life. He is survived by his son David, daughter Chelsea, and wife Cara who shall forever be cheering for Scott. (by Fleetfang on 501st.com) There were 10 Legion members and R2-D2 present at his services. If you would like to support Scott's family, please consider a donation here. "He's the Trooper who makes the others laugh at an after Troop get together. He's the Trooper who asks what he can do to help. The one who gets folks in line and on point while getting suited up at a Troop. The one who writes you to say how much he loves trooping; how much being a member means to him/her. That was Scott." - a quote from Chris Berban (Central TX Squad Leader) to Dean Plantamura (Legion PRO) It is with great pride that we enter these troopers' names into the Hall of Eternal Legionaries. Buckets off troopers.... FISD Group Photo For approved members of FISD we will be taking a series of group photos the morning of Saturday April 18th. Troopers are asked to muster at 10am and the photos will start around 11am. The photo will be taking place on the fountain steps of the convention center. Check this thread for more information. Stormtrooper Social The night of Saturday the 18th at 7pm we are gathering in the nFuse lounge in the Marriott for merriment. Everyone is welcome. We have extended invitations to other detachments as well. If you have other plans that night please stop by and say hello on your way out. As of the writing of this newsletter there are about 40 people who RSVP'd. If you intend to attend please sign up here. 501st Costuming Panel Your Detachment Leader is participating in a panel titled "Costuming in a Galaxy Far, Far Away" on Thursday the 16th at 4pm. Staff from SLD and the BHG are presenting as well. Feel free to attend and heckle our DL. Living mannequins are needed. If you are in costume during that time please attend and wander around the room during the panel. Armor Needed For a Trooper After some discussion about a certain armor on the main boards and who would be deserving of it, Cameron Smith (Agent of Chaos) from the Redback Garrison put forward the idea to help raise funds for a new set of armor for Scott Loxley, for those who don't know Scott is, he is walking around Australia raising Funds for Monash Children's Hospital. His armor has seen better days and it will no longer be 501st approvable once he finishes his walk. Cameron thought considering what Scott is doing and the sacrifice he and his family have made for this cause, the legion should make an effort to replace his kit. He then started a thread on the main boards asking those who would like to help to get on board, donation thread here. It didn't take long to reach the goal of $2000 and funds are still being sent in, the extra will help towards some new boots, socks, gloves and so on. I would like to personally thank Cameron and all those who have donated, it is the true spirit of Troopers Helping Troopers. Scott says thanks Tim for the can of coke With Unquestioned Loyalty, GLen Q Rhodes TK-85421 "gmrhodes13" FISD Imperial Propaganda Machine Team Our Q&A this month is a little bit different. Usually, we have someone that comes from the Star Wars universe. This month, we have a Q&A inspired by a Troop that I recently attended. On February 9th, 2015 the National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Dallas Mavericks hosted their first ever “Star Wars Night!†I was fortunate enough to attend in my TK, and I can assure you that we were treated remarkably by the Mavericks and the staff at the American Airlines Center from the moment we arrived, until we departed their offices for the evening. In looking back on the event I can, of course, identify the benefit to us as members of the 501st Legion – we once again had an opportunity to do what we do best; get out in public, promote our love of Star Wars, pose for a lot of pictures, and in the process we made a lot of people smile. In this particular instance, some of our members were part of on-court activities, and some were featured on television during the nationally broadcast game. The thought occurred to me though, why? We know what’s in it for us, but that last thought made me curious about the other side of that coin. What is it about Star Wars, released in 1977, that compels professional organizations like the Mavericks to dedicate an entire night of their schedule to it, and what is the benefit of having the 501st Legion be a part of that night? Fortunately, Lexie Randall, Sr. Marketing Manager for the Dallas Mavericks’ agreed to take part in a short Q&A for the First Imperial Stormtrooper Detachment (FISD) Newsletter and give us some insight into those, and other questions. 1.) First, thank you for taking the time to do this for us. As members of the 501st Legion, we clearly love Star Wars, but what is the appeal of a Star Wars night for the Dallas Mavericks? This is after all, a film that is older than many of your fans, and certainly older than most of your players. Lexie Randall: It’s my pleasure! The Mavericks aim to put on the best in-game experience in professional sports, and we are always looking for new ways to keep our fans excited and interested. The Star Wars movies are classics and we had staff, players and fans of all ages really excited to see Star Wars integrated with the Mavericks. 2.) Clearly, the product of your organization – the team – is out there competing against the other teams within the NBA. Is there a similar relationship behind the scenes, or do the different team offices work together throughout the league to discuss ideas like Star Wars Night, to better the fan experience across the league? LR: It’s completely different behind the scenes. While teams are opponents on the court, Marketing departments around the NBA are very open to collaborating and sharing best practices. 3.) When the team hosts a themed special event like this, is there a metric in place that is used to gauge the success of the event, or is this more along the lines of something fun for the fans? LR: The only real metrics include how much media attention the event received, how many tickets were sold and what the fan feedback was. By the number of calls and inquiries we received, we’d definitely consider Star Wars night a huge success! Follow-up question: If there is a metric, can you tell us how Star Wars Night turned out for the organization from a standpoint of being considered a successful event when compared to other themed events? LR: It’s difficult to compare different theme nights because there are many other factors (opponent, day of the week, etc.) The noticeable difference was the amount of fans who showed up to the game in costume or wearing a Star Wars shirt! 4.) Were you aware of the 501st Legion before you began planning this event, and if not, how did you find out about us? LR: I was personally not aware of the local 501st Legion. I worked with the Atlanta Braves a few years ago when they did a Star Wars Night so I had seen the characters before, but I wasn’t really involved with the theme night so I didn’t how much went into creating the costumes and volunteering for these events. We see some diehard Mavs fans who know every player and statistic, so it was great to work with a group just as passionate about Star Wars! 5.) As an organization that requested our presence for your event, what is the appeal to you, of the 501st Legion? LR: See answer below to question 6. 6.) What do you feel the presence of the 501st Legion added to your event? LR: You provided a unique and interactive experience for Mavs and Star Wars fans alike. It’s not every day that we get to see Star Wars characters throughout the concourse of a Mavs game! The authenticity of the costumes was truly remarkable and our fans were so excited every time they walked around a corner to get a picture with a different character. 7.) Do you have any particular memory, story that you heard, or fan feedback from Star Wars Night, that you’d care to share with us? LR: My fiancé is a big Star Wars fan, and he was at the game with his friends. I got a text from him right before tipoff in all caps that said “LEXIE…R2-D2 IS HERE! THIS IS AWESOME!†with a photo attached. Obviously, that made my night. J 8.) Finally, a two-part question which will put you on the spot a little bit: Which was your favorite costume that you saw in action during Star Wars Night, and if you could be a character for a day, which would you choose? (Seriously… No pressure or anything just because this is for the Stormtrooper Newsletter. J) LR: Hmm… I hate to choose a guy from the dark side, but Darth Vader was pretty awesome. The fact that he could speak in that breathy voice added an extra cool element. I would LOVE to be an Ewok for a day. My brothers and I imitated those when we were younger…and still do sometimes. Here's a picture of Lexie, sporting the always fashionable TK Helmet, during the Dallas Mavericks' Star Wars Night! So, a big thank you to Lexie for taking part in the Q&A for us, and by extension to the Dallas Mavericks for hosting a Star Wars Night, for including us, and for allowing Lexie to take part in the Q&A. With Unquestioned Loyalty, Tim Waychoff TK-51878 "Dark CMF" FISD Ambassador In this month's edition of Memoirs, FISD member "AsBlondeAsLuke" TK-95020 shares with us, and you - the readers - a memory that is near and dear to her Imperial heart. I'm sure that within a few moments, it will be near and dear to all of you, as well. Diana writes... I think my most memorable troop was when I smacked Dave Filoni in the back with my blaster repeatedly. Mind you, I did not do this intentionally. However, there are certain skills it takes some time to master and I definitely didn’t have them. It was May 17, 2014 and I was at BigWow ComicFest San Jose with a number of people from my garrison. In the evening, there was going to be a special showing of Godzilla. Dave Filoni is a huge Godzilla fan so he’d come for this event, and spent a few hours in the afternoon at our booth. In the middle of the afternoon, we took our group picture. We were all in our armor, except for Dave. As our honored guest, Dave was put in the first row. I ended up in the second row, which probably wasn’t optimal since I’m a bit… eh… short. But, anyway, there I was and we started taking our pictures. The “bucket on†pictures were easy enough. But, then in the end the call came for the “bucket off†shots. I’d taken my helmet on and off, at least a hundred times at home during my build. But, I’d never practiced it one-handed with a blaster in my other hand. Or, attempted to unsnap my holster with gloves on and quickly get my blaster tucked properly. Word to the wise, these are good skills to master at home so you don’t fumble these group shots. So, as I was struggling to get my helmet off one-handed in very tight conditions with all of these people around me, I had no idea I was poking my blaster into the person in front of me. Apparently, I did so repeatedly. I didn’t become aware of my goof until the person in front of me turned around and gave me a bemused look. You can barely see me in this picture since I'm the little trooper in the second row behind Boba Fett, right there in a perfect position to smack Dave. Uggh. Sorry, Dave. It is a good thing the man has a sense of humor. Ever since then I’ve been thinking he should add a segment to Rebels about a stormtrooper so hopeless with their blaster they desert their post and join the Rebellion. (Don’t shoot me. The show isn’t called Imperials. Although, that would be an epically good idea for a show.) As the year went by, there were many more memorable troops involving stairs, tripping hazards, hot tarmac, and overzealous Marines. (Not all at once.) But, the story that never fails to make everyone laugh and cringe is my faux pas with the blaster. 10. Rubber chemical gloves are best and accurate. If you worry about sweating get those cricket/inner gloves.
  11. if the part is small you can stuff it in a freezer and once it gets really cold, the glue will be brittle and break off easily...(or was that with super glue? can't remember now) I use a blade and carefully slice the gap apart. And then use my finger nails to scratch the glue off. Gross right?
  12. Can't say I've heard of that brand. As long as there's no brand/logo showing with the armour on then it shouldn't be a problem. Let us know on the quality!
  13. Looks amazing and fun. Would love to do a hospital troop soon.
  14. You could try finding sskunky on Facebook if you have and account (CfO I believe?) or PM his account here on the boards. Here's his FB page link: https://www.facebook.com/pages/CfO-Cast-from-Original/122263121172779
  15. And for a better explanation of what I meant, here are some pictures on a screen-used suit.
  16. As you can see in this picture not all the ammo packs were centered along the butt cover in the front. I'd say don't trim it first, but move the pack clockwise so both sides of the ammo pack will align with the ends of the flat side of the thigh.
  17. Who offered this to you? Personal friend or someone from eBay? If you are going to spend 100 on something you're unsure off it'd be better to purchase from vendors who already have a good reputation. I see that you are in UK so there are 3 good places to get your helmet from. RS (you can find them on facebook or their website. Search RS Propmasters on the internet). There's also Troopermaster (you can also find him on facebook or you can message him on the forums here). There also BFA armour. This guy goes by the name of Andy. He isn't on the FISD but you can find him on facebook. PM me if you want more details
  18. If you are smaller sized, I'd say it'd be better to have a thinner kidney piece. That way when the belt tightens the kidney plate around your back and flexes, there wouldn't be too much stress to cause cracks. Sal. MTK's videos are quite a useful guideline to how the shins and thighs are assembled. But be wary about the right thigh ammo pack placement. MTK seems to have positioned it weirdly (this was when I last watched his vids. He may have updated them). However the best advice I can give you is to look at the build threads on the FISD first to get an idea of how you want to go about your build. Then follow the most detailed one you can follow. Also look at the EIB and Centurion threads to get a good target of how you want your armour to end up looking.
  19. Welcome Kristi Well there you go all your questions answered and fears resolved by the comments and in the form of a smaller sized TK suit offered by TM (Paul). We hope to see those obligatory brown box photos in time when you start your own build thread (or fitting thread if you've got it built for you) Most if not all who start their threads post a brown box (where your armour is delivered in) photo at the start of their thread. It's like 10 Christmases in one box!
  20. Well if there was a story behind my "nickname" I'd tell but.... My gamertag though is Chloro. No history behind it. Just thought it sounded nice on the tongue. I'd change my nickname to Chloro but 'evan_loh' has been pretty cemented already.
  21. Hey we share the same name! All the best in your build and I hope you throughly enjoy it. As there's a common saying here measure twice cut once. Also, don't worry about asking silly questions, if there's a decision you're not sure about just ask. It may save you from making a grave error!
