1. Thanks, that sounds good. It's much more than calling a spade a spade, it's true trolling and representing disruption.
2. I don't mind getting a little flak about buying a Rubies before I knew better. These guys are in the 501st. It's on their profile Facebook page. If anyone wants copis of how theses jerks behave like trolls, I'll send you the conversation copied and pasted into a private message. It's pretty disgusting.I'm old enough and mostly mature enough to handle it, just getting fed up with it.
Maybe I'm just naive and should have just stayed in the scouts.
3. Here's the crux of the question. Why are there so many 501st members trolling, insulting, and being rude and honestly downright hostile in other social media venues? They don't get under my skin much buy they say things like "it's fun to be elitist" and rip on other people's armor, mostly people who are not interested in joining. I see LOT of bad eggs and downright right bullying. I don't care how they treat me anymore, but I get really livid when I see others get slammed with 501st snark and disruptive behavior. NOT a good way to represent. So if there is any type of overall creed...mission statement on how the 501st is generally meant to be "polite." I want to see it. If I'm ever honored to be accepted into the 501st, I feel that it will be my duty to be courteous and represent the 501st as a good organization that lifts people up and politely helps people (who want) totally screen accurate costuming.
On the brighter side, I have met some extremely kind and helpful people in the 501st, and as a person who has been utterly disgusted with the human race, I thought getting involved with this would turn me around.
4. Is there a creed on how you feel 501st members should conduct themselves outside of FISD?
5. Seems like there are really two camps, velcro, or snaps. A lot of the seasoned veterans here have been snap-happy and that's A-OK with me. I've always used Velcro industrial strength (seriously strong) and it's been amazing, from the grip of the velcro itself, to the extreme of the adhesive. There's a reason why NASA used it extensively on astronaut suits. I trust Anovos, they've had a pretty good track record so far. If they're going to a velcro system, then maybe we need to get our heads out of our butt-plates and not reject applicants from acceptance just because they adopted a new and effective way of holding this armor up in a screen accurate manner.
6. I for one have never used snaps in any costuming, it's always been velcro. For this stuff though I'm really leaning toward learning a good snap system with nylon webbing straps. However, in using a crap set of armor and marching two hours in a parade, the entire velcro sytem held up very, very well, and made no real noise to speak about. So I'm torn, as much as I want to get "snapping," this velcro is extremely strong and silent.
7. I ordered a Rubies as well (stuck with it), thinking it was another manufacturer. Anovos already has a track record of making outstanding Star Trek gear and they really look promising. I wouldn't bail, I'd be kicking myself for the rest of my life. I think it's going to be really good, NOTHING like Rubies.
8. Too fat? No, doesn't look like it. I however, was, I had to lose 15 lbs to be film-accurate. I just didn't look right. (to my own self).
9. ...woah, wait, did you say fifty bucks? Holy schnikies, it's worth $50.00 at least, and can be worked with to the point where SOMEONE likes it.
10. I have a Rubies that I put way too much money and effort into and it's not yet meeting my own standards, let alone the 501st. The overall quality of manufacturing is pretty bad, a lot of inner attachment plates broke off from the velcro or elastics. If you just want something for John Q. Public, go ahead and buy it. But for something really seriously cool, look elsewhere. Mine just sits on a mannequin now, as a stand for my EFX helmet, while I wait for my Anovos order. If you want commercial made and what looks to be outstanding, look into Anovos, completed helmet with the armor kit. [/url]
11. I literally stole some snaps from my dear old Mom's sewing basket. Thanks for the info on making sure I get good ones. For all I know, she bought these at Wallyworld. I'll look into the resources provided, I want the really sturdy stuff...industrial style.
12. Thanks. Got some good direction so far. Now I just need to figure out how to use the tools and make the actual stuff. Youtube probably has a lot of crafty videos.
13. I want to go the "snaps" route if I can with my TK build from Anovos. However, since it's going to be forever and a day before it gets here, I want to totally take my crappy Rubies junk and practice installing snaps on that ABS material. At this point, it's ok with me if I wreck it, just want to practice making snap mechanisms. And forgive me, I looked around here quite a bit and elsewhere and I can't seem to find an answer to these questions: Where can I buy good quality nylon strapping and snaps? Looked at Hobby Lobby but got lost. But more importantly, is there a specific thread/link on directions for installing a snap system for a TK? Thanks.
14. Don't feel bad mates. At least you're not me. Even the freaks on stilts think I'm a joke. ----------
15. I'll be selling off this armor as well to put toward a TM ANH kit in the Spring of 2016. It was an interesting ride, but it just isn't worth the effort to make it approvable. Besides, I always liked the look of the ANH over the ROTJ anyway.
16. Sounds good. The shins do bother me, so I'll dremel them down at the bottom and see how much better they feel. I'm painting the ab buttons, even though Rubies design got it wrong (vertically flipped).
17. SO, when I first got here, I had a very loose-fitting, wonky-looking piece of meat that was the Rubies attempt at what looks to be an ROTJ STormtrooper. I had to do extensive work behind the armor to properly fasten the chest piece to the ab piece and still give it flexibility, as well as popping out the rivets in the shoulder straps (The dang things both broke off anyway), and then ditching the helmet (replaced with a NICE EFX) and starting to paint the Rubies E-11 Blaster. I did get a beautiful holster from SIngapore and will add it by the time I'm done with all finishing touches. I had to paint the armor because the Rubies armor looked like a "droopy blue-white) compared to the brilliant bright white of the EFX helmet. So it's an ANH/ROTJ Hybrid/bastardization, and it's not good enough for the 501st, and I'm always going to want the ANH over the ROTJ any day anyway...(especially one made by TrooperMaster) I'm not putting more effort into this so much with an ANovos order on the way, but what do you think? How does it look for Halloween, and the Salvation Army Stormy Bell-ringer?
18. From what I've seen, Paul's stuff is the very best. When the time is right, I'm selling off my Rubies -modified ROTJ/ANH hybrid and going for a full custom fit through Paul for an extra ANH TK. Compare Paul's picture's to any original archive pictures and I challenge you to find any flaws at all. TM armor looks the best to me, with some extremely close runner-ups, none of which are commercial made.
19. Yep, to me, the RS and the Shepperton look the best. Honestly. So does the TM helmet. I guess I'm just nit-pcking that detail. Everyting else about tghe Amor looks fantastic. Hopefully, that's how it will end up when I'm done building it. This picture looks a bit more reassuring.
20. Been staring at the order I'm waiting for on this trooper gear and already picking it apart. Wondering if anyone has any concerns about the low brow or "headband" on some helmets (especially Anovos) have a very low brow, whereas others don't. The original has it up so high that it looks like the white around the eyes look like goggles built into the helmet. This is the only picture I have of the Anovos helmet and it's only at one angle. Has anyone, noticed or been concerned about this detail?
21. Maybe a weird question, but what do you guys use to store and transport your armor?
22. Thank you very much everyone. I will get the padding at JoAnn Fabrics and some good velcro as advised. You rock.
