I had never crafted anything either before my build (other than playing with Legos), you will be alright. The first cut is the hardest. I'd recommend starting out with either a hasbro conversion or a resin kit (like doopy doo's) to make an E-11 while you wait for your armor. I built my hasbro E-11 conversion while I waited on my armor just so I could have some practice with putting things together, gluing and cutting. It sounds like you're doing the right thing with all your research though! Good luck!

Personally I went with a TKittel belt, a TKBondsrvant holster and a Veedox neck seal and I love all 3. Trooperbay is a great place to shop though, very nice people to do business with and also very affordable. It mostly comes down to what you think looks best for you!

Travis,
As Nathan said, definitely check out the 70th forums. I've made the offer to him and I'll make it to you as well; if either of you want to look at my ATA kit and see how I did things, just let me know. It helped me a ton when I got started just to look at someone else's kit so I could decide what I liked or didn't like about how they put themselves together. Also, we have lots of troops coming up that if you wanted we could maybe arrange to have you as a handler so you can see how events work from our side of things.

I find that I start looking at other projects while I wait for my current project to arrive. The 8 weeks of waiting for my kit seemed to drag on forever and I spent a lot of time looking at the mandalorian mercs forums as interest in those costumes. Once I got my TK someone told me I should do 3PO, and now that I am waiting for 3PO parts I am spending time looking at other costumes until that gets here. Currently I think it would be awesome to do a Halo Spartan after 3PO, but I don't know if I could handle the pepakura work for that. And every so often I glance at the mercs stuff. In general, yeah, I would say the hobby is addicting.

Wonder how many people will do silly things with binary before the 10000s run out.

They have actually already begun issuing numbers that are 5 digits, it is a huge milestone and testament to how large the 501st has become!
edit: dang it. Terrell beat me to it by a whole 30 seconds! and I thought I was on top of it!

I like the design a lot!

Well, I was going to direct you to some of the links, but it sounds like you have checked most of them out already! In addition to those "getting started" threads you could also look at build threads of which particular TK you are interested in. A lot of times people post pictures of them wearing armor as they build it so you could kind of see on their sizing how you think the armor type would fit you.
Good luck!

Welcome! As Charlie said the "getting started" area is a great place to, well, get started.
Two of the most useful links there for a new person are http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=11538 and http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=18735.
The first link is a list of the various armor suppliers. Most of them can be reached via e-mail or PM on the forums. Lots and lots of research will go a long ways for you. I think I spent about a month or 2 just looking all around the forums before ordering a set of armor.
Another useful resource will be your local garrison if you haven't already made contact with them.
Good luck!

Just curious if any troopers have done an event like this. One is being hosted at the hospital where I go to school and I'm thinking about trying it as a TK. Here is a brief description of the event: "The International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault & Gender Violence. A Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Event is a playful opportunity for men to raise awareness in their community about the serious causes, effects and remediations to sexualized violence." And more info is available at http://www.walkamileinhershoes.org/. I think it would be a neat event to do as a TK (if balancing wouldn't kill me) and I think I could raise a good chunk of change through my local garrison.
What do you guys think? Have any of the men out there attempted walking in heels before? In armor with heels? Should I have a bad feeling about this?

Gotta agree with Locitus here. The only really reasonable place for velcro is the back of the shins. There are a couple other places you might be able to make ti work, but snaps will serve you much better and help you to avoid wardrobe malfunctions mid-troop.

I'd recommend going for EIB or Centurion even right off the bat. I told myself when I made mine that I was going to apply and then go back and tweak the few things I needed for EIB...here I am 6 months later and still thinking "I really need to get to work on my EIB qualifications."

Oh and another quick question, the bucket shipped with my kit is an old school 3 piece. Yeah gonna need a swap eventually I know. Know anyone who has salvaged these things? And what are some good helmet kit resources! Thanks!
That bucket is a pretty easy build, but (as you mentioned) an upgrade would look better. I personally recommend ATA, but I'm a bit biased since that is what I troop in.

lol, Nathan, remember if you want any local help or advice or just want to get your hands on some armor to see how someone else did something shoot me a PM or another garrison member. I actually did this same thing the first time I held one of those up to my leg as well. I'm in KCK, so only about 20 minutes away.

I'm 5'7 and about 130 lbs and I got my ATA to look pretty good. Here is a tutorial someone made that can help a bit with sizing things down for someone smaller. http://www.whitearmor.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=18243 The title list it as how to mod armor for women but it is also helpful for those of us who come in just "a little short to be a stormtrooper" (and you will get this line a lot. I hear it at least once per troop).
Good luck!

The vocoder for that particular lid actually is a separate piece that has to be glued on. Definitely replace the lid if you can though.
-
I think both of your ears look really good. It is hard to tell from the images, but is your right ear a little bit thicker than your left? As far as getting the ears to fit snug on the cheeks it looks great- if you look at the screen shots almost every helmet in the movies has gaps near the edges, so having a few small gaps isn't terrible (and is actually screen-accurate!)

Tim,
I'm one of the TKs in KC, hope to troop with you in the future! Looking good so far!

I originally thought about going with a hockey bag as well (I mean, I only have 3 or 4 not being used lying around) but after constructing the armor decided to go with the Stanely tote due to durability. I was worried my armor would get banged around too much in the hockey bag!
-
I don't know about what the "best" would be considered, but I personally have an ATA and love it.
-
Welcome to the boards! A good project to get your hands wet (if you haven't done armor work before) is to work on your weapon while you wait for your armor to get to you.
Best of luck!

It amazed me how Terrell managed to get all of that into that small of a box. Once I took it out, it never fit in the same way again.
-
Nathan,
Sorry, I've been trying to reply to you on the 70th but the forums are being difficult. I finished up an ATA ABS kit in Feb. so if you run in to any hiccups or have any questions feel free to drop me a line! I live down in KCK but spend a lot of time around the city with work.

Welll, where do we start?
We don't.
Just burn it. Burn it with fire. And hope it didn't reproduce.
