Kidney and Ab plate Question

Is it acceptable to have the kidney and ab plate joined with industrial velcro instead of the rivets and strapping technique? Thanks

Depends on what your goal is. If you're going for FISD Elite, then no... it's not. If you're just wanting to get into the Legion, then yes... I believe it is.

Its sure is acceptable! The way you join these parts is down to You.The rivet detail can be part of the joining process ,or just a detail serving no purpose other than to mimic the screen suits,or not present at all.

 

Its all down to screen accuracy,for me they are a must have feature.

 

velcro with no rivets like i said very secure and acceptable way of doing it.The rivet detail is NOT needed for FISD Elite,it states the cod and Kidney should have no gap.

Is there a good tutorial on doing the rivets on the left side? I think it might look better than the velcro but I wanna make sure I do it right because I havent worked with rivets before

No worries - it's easy enough to do.

 

It's pretty cool seeing more and more people putting rivets on the sides - this is really only a detail that's gotten popular in the last year. Heck, I don't have mine that way yet - hope I'm still EIB :-p

Well if Daetrin doesnt have rivets then ill stick with velcro

As Stuka mentioned, the rivets can be functional or not at all.

 

For example, my ab / kidney has the rivets but they are "for show". As is the exposed back of the male rivet on the right side of the armor. I placed loop velcro on the inside of the ab / kidney, and them made some "connector tabs" (simple styrene sheets and curved them slightly with a heat gun), and then attached loop velcro to them. They act as extra support / backing for the velcro. Once I suit up, the entire torso is nice and strong, and there's no way it's going to come apart unless I want it to.

 

You can just barely see some black between the ab and kidney in this pic. That's where the styrene / velcro "connector tabs" tabs are.

So you could do the following options:

 

1. Rivet the left side so that there's elastic straps permanently riveted to connect the ab / kidney, thus creating a "clamshell" hinge. The right side would close via another elastic and attach to the exposed male snap under the armor (I believe this is the most "screen accurate" way to close the torso, even though you don't see it.

 

2. Create some elastic connectors with female snaps on them. These snap into the male snaps which have been riveted on the left side. Both looks and function! Stukatrooper does this and you can see this on his wonderful build images:

3. Attach the ab and kidney with Velcro as described above. The rivets are just for looks.

 

I'm sure there's other ways to do it too, but there's a few options for you.
