Spray putty is for the larger scratches and imperfections. Interestingly other countries don't actually have a product called spray putty they call it primer filler. I normally use spray putty and primer, I only use the primer/filler if I can't get either of those.

Thanks, is there a difference or does it not really matter? SCA does one of each so unsure

It looks like you got some pretty good suggestions, but I’ve recently started using higher end paints such as SEM. Coverage is a lot better and it takes far less to do the same job. It is a little weird spending $30 on a can of paint, but I’m literally getting about 4x as much out of a can as I was with the cheaper stuff. The only Rustoleum I’m still using is their sealer primer.
Search around though. I would suggest using something that has a fan tip. The acrylic auto paints are typically equipped with one, but you might be able to pick something up for a reasonable price that gets the job done. Also, since you’re painting  a fairly decent surface, you don’t need a high build formula. A good sandable primer or filler sandable will get the job done.

yeah as much as I would love to cash out on premium quality stuff I don't have the money for it and currently I'm trying to save money for the armor set itself so ill make do with the budget options

Yes I've used the white, red and clear on a couple of sets of armor and other helmets. Like any spray paint it can take a little time to get used to speed and height getting it to coat just right. You can go a little heavier with acrylic paint compared to enames too. In the end if you do get any runs they can be sanded and buffed (once completely dry that is)

and would I use the filler primer or spray putty?

Great, I really need the black and white, as for grey do i just stay with rust oleum as SCA dont do a grey? and is the white gloss or flat?

I've had issues with Rustoleum in the past, didnt' matter how much I shook the cans they at times came out dry and patchy. I also think Rustoleum doesn't get used as much here compared to the US so the cans could be on the shelves for some time.

I only use SCA paints for armor now.

Ok thanks, ill stick with SCA, are the colors all fine too?

I prefer to use automotive acrylic paint, a lot better than the rustoleum which can come out dry or splotchy, Supercheap Auto have their own brand SCA in acrylic. At times you can get it on special too just keep an eye on their catalogues.

I find with the acrylic paint it dries quite fast, can be recoated in 10 minutes, can have clear applied over the top and can be buffed/polished for a real nice shine.

Their base white was a match for the Anovos TFA and TLJ helmets too ;)

Spray putty for larger scratches/sanding, Primer filler for smaller scratches, Primer for final coat before paint.

    Currently 2 for $20 (20% off)

Would you recommend these acrylic paints over the rustoleum 2x ultracover primer paints? I am able to get these at bunnings (rustoleum)

    Justin,

Great idea! You definitely knocked this one out of the park.
For @RINZLERz: I’m glad you received your helmet. As you’re starting off, I’d encourage you to focus in on what Justin did for the eye. He and I discussed this a while ago and the two of us took very similar, but different approaches. Justin accentuated the eye bump with Bondo Spot and Glaze Putty and it turned out great. I actually used a 2 part epoxy when I did mine, but I also “squared” off the corners of the eyes just a bit. Either compound works well, but just remember that these details are very subtle on the ROTK helmet; less is more.
I would also like to echo what Justin said about reinforcing the helmet. In comparing kits, it’s clear that the casting process creates slight variations from pull to pull. I didn’t have any thin spots on mine, but I did steal his bedliner idea and now use it religiously.
Finally, do a careful examination of your bucket for pinholes and the low spots @gmrhodes13 pointed out. I spot checked mine with Spot and Glaze Putty, but also hit it with a guide coat prior to blocking it. I’m also using primer sealer now in order to create a perfectly seamless painting surface and the results have been fantastic.
Anyways, check out the build thread and please feel free to reach out with any questions.

already got some epoxy resin to coat the inside in, not sure how I'm gonna go doing the whole eye thing (as in what I'm aiming for), ive already gone and filled the holes and bumps with putty and sanded it down and repeated. still stuck on a filler primer, the rustoleum one shown to be used is not sold around here so any suggestions on subs?

I used a modified BS helmet to get my L1 approved. I think my armor can get approved for higher levels with a better bucket! I'll be watching this to see how you progress. Jimmy or  Nico that is the question!

I also did consider getting a BS helmet but decided against it as I would like the option to move to higher levels without replacing the whole helmet, as for Jim or Nico, from what I've heard Nico's 3d print files are the most accurate ones out there however I do like how Jim sells the helmet "made" and that its made of fiberglass (I think?) and it is also quite accurate too (his armor and helmet are used as examples for the CRL) but the choice is entirely up to you from there, I'm happy to share my opinions of Jim's helmet once I've started working on it !

Read the thread in my signature in its entirety haha

My trials and tribulations with my Jimmi kit were decently well-documented, so I hope they give some guidance. And feel free to post any questions and we'll do our best to help!

Yeah I read all the way through it and @11b30b4's build thread too, I currently just have the helmet (which I will just have for a while) and just want to know what materials and paint colors/types ill need and a sort of basic rundown what I should do

  10. Hi all, starting off my very first build with the helmet of course! After a lot of research and help from people here finally was able to pick out Jim's fiberglass helmet and buy it. Just wondering from people who have bought and used the helmet "kit" from him what suggestions you have and from everyone else, what stuff would I need and what would I need to do for a L1 approval (and mods in future for higher level approval and centurion). This is my first time doing anything like this so any help or support whatsoever would be greatly appreciated!

  11. Thanks, I can tell the difference between Jim Tripon's armor and the 850armourworks, its like light and day. I think in conclusion ill go with Jim Tripon as his helmet and armor look the most accurate and I feel like it would be a good learning experience for me to do some hands on DIY, and the price hits the spot perfectly. Appreciate all the support, when I get the helmet expect me to flood this forum with questions on what to do with it haha.

  12. Thanks for the support, I have settled on the original TK as my first build as that's what I've always wanted to do.

I've done some research and looked through this forum and complied a few sellers and just want your thoughts on them and suggestions.

    850armorworks

This was suggested a few times and liked the fact they sell fully done helmets, the picture doesn't look so great however but nonetheless people recommend this bucket, is quite expensive however, taking into account my low budget.

    Jim Tripon

Saw his name pop up a few times and decided also to check him out, he does a very impressive looking helmet and within my budget however it is a kit and I'm unsure if that would be good for me as a first time builder.

    Esty 1

Some random esty listing I found while browsing, helmet looks quite nice aside from a few minor details such as the rear grey marking lack the stripes, but quite low priced

    Esty 2

Another esty listing I found, looks promising and isnt too bad on price.

Just want your opinions on these and which I should pick, I would place amour works lower as it is the more expensive.

Definitely want to end up with a full armour set and to be able to join 501st, I would preferably like to buy a fully complete helmet, the armour i'm happy to DIY but the helmet would be difficult for me, but going back to the helmet, i’ve looked at the vendors that have being recommended and done a bit of my own research, im currently interested in the 850armourworks stormtrooper helmet and a Anvos FOTK helmet (second hand), and am unsure which path to go (FOTK or TK), if anyone else has suggestions on better completed buckets to go for im all ears, budget is around 450 AUD.

Also would prefer not to have the modify the helmets a lot for it to meet 501st requirements

@RINZLERz, I know you said you’re not “specifically focused” on Rogue One helmets, but @TheRascalKing’s suggestion is an excellent option. However, having spoken with Nico, he asks that both parties buy his files from him before you commission someone to print and finish a bucket.

I think one  question that needs to be asked though is what your intent is? Do you intend on buying a helmet to display, or are you thinking about putting together the rest of the armor later on? Obviously, with the differences in helmets, it’s a good idea to plan this out.

There’s options out there, so please take a look at all the resources @gmrhodes13 posted. But, knowing you’re on a budget, you might want to consider the 3d print route. The files and 2 rolls of filament will cost you approximately $85, but then you can start buying paint and finishing supplies as your budget allows. However, this means you’d be finishing and painting it yourself which can be challenging, but rewarding. If you want someone to do a full commission build, the price can get out of control.
