  1. Hey man, glad to see you're back at it! In planning out my Jimmi helmet, I'm stuck on paint. It's awesome to see your walkthrough and supply list! Do you know what you're going to use for the gray and black helmet parts? I saw Daetrin’s R1TK Paint Guide which listed Humbrol and Testors colors, but since I'm planning rattle cans only, those aren't really options for me. What are you going to use? You've primed the whole bucket and then plan on taping and painting the different parts? I'm just trying to get my supply list together and paint colors and types are the hardest to plan for so far... Thanks man!

  2. Hey everyone! Long-time Star Wars fan, first-time cosplay! I'm talking movies, shows, books, and games; canon and legends; all of it! I have a bunch of Disneyland lightsabers, even one from Savi's, and a Rubie's Jedi robe, but nothing so legit as a movie-quality Stormtrooper costume!

I met up with a guy in Feb who showed me his ANH TK and ESB TS. So awesome! I wasn't supposed to be interested, but I couldn't help myself.  He introduced me to the websites and resources and I was hooked!

I started looking around the 501st and thought I'd check out some Phase II Clonetrooper armor (the customization options were intriguing), but I knew that my first costume just HAD TO BE a Stormtrooper! Looking through the versions, I really like the crisp lines, refined details, and vent depth of the Rogue One TK! I checked out the vendors and decided on Jimmiroquai!

Sadly, my wife was not on board with the financial cost or required time to produce a full suit. She was more open to starting with a helmet, and if I enjoy it enough and improve my DITY skills, then supposedly we’ll readdress the rest of the armor.

So I ordered Jim’s R1TK helmet a few days ago and, COVID-19 restrictions permitting, it won’t be too long before I get started!  For now, I’ll just keep scouring the forums to gather everything I’ll need for my helmet so I’m ready when it arrives!

The work looks daunting, but I think starting with just the bucket will help me focus and ease in. Plus, I’m sure this community will provide plenty of guidance as needed.

So excited to take my first step in joining the 501st!

Yes trimming isn't bad at all. I just have been using a Dremel cut off wheel. I added extra resin to the inside of my suit but you don't have to.

And yes, the entire suit needs to be primed, sanded, and painted. It is more of an off-white gel coat has plenty of surface imperfections, pending how anal you are.

Yep, keep researching and asking questions man. Know what you're getting into either way.

Justin, thanks for you input and suggestions so far! I just spent the night reading thru your R1TK build. First of all, I hope your treatments go well.

You explained pretty much everything you did, which helps me feel like I can mimic your armor prep, like what to sand with, paint/primer method, even resin reinforcement.

All of it is a bit intimidating, since I don't have any experience with this stuff. I think I was more prepared for ABS trimming, fitting, and mounting... I think I just like the R1 bucket with its cutouts instead of painted lines or decals.

Jimmi's fiberglass suit required MUCH less modification and assembly than the 850AW suit, if you have no costuming experience. It was my first fiberglass suit to and is coming along fine. Jimmi's material is also much closer to the screen used materials - R1 suits are not made of ABS like the OT ones.

Jimmi does not offer an ABS option.

Correct - a Black Series would require modification for approval. Jimmi offers a standalone fiberglass helmet that is a very cleaned up cast of the BS from my understanding. It should not need any mods for approval. The whole kit just needs mild trimming to fit, paint, and assembly with Velcro/strapping.

Let us know if you have a more questions we can help with.

    Thanks for the explanation!

You've got me leaning back to Jimmi's now lol. Does trimming to fit still work out alright?

Does the whole thing need to be painted?? I figured the white finish is fine and I'd just need to paint some black/gray on the bucket.

I guess I'm still early in my research and don't have a full grasp of what's required. I'll keep going thru R1TK Jimmi builds.

  5. I just found out Jimmi is fiberglass...I don't think I'm proficient enough to modify that. I don't have any modeling or costuming experience. Do Jimmiroquai offer an ABS option?

If not, looks like 850AW is what I'll have to look at.

I'm not sure what I'll do about the helmet though. 850AW says it comes with the Black Series, but I'd have to disassemble that and make a lot of mods, right?

Does Jimmi sell a standalone R1TK helmet? Is it also FB? Does it require mods?

Just trying to get my ducks in a row before I commit...appreciate any help!
